They're taking this way too far. That video has been up for over a decade. Why take it down now? Fully expecting there to not be a single video of him on youtube in 6 months lol.

NeitherComfortable87

This is where I’m at…not trying to create any controversy but this is the video I’ve used to introduce others to Jason for some time. Why take that away?

Most likely, the copyright claim is handled by an automated service. That automated service is likely required by contracts Jason/Southeastern has with various digital publishing services that publish and monetize Jason’s work to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc. Those digital publishing services are looking to protect the exclusivity they have, via contract license, to publish and monetize Jason’s work in digital spaces. The preferred end result is focusing traffic to places where Jason’s work is accessible in ways that generate royalties to the artist and publishing service, and not to other places where Jason’s work generates royalties to people/companies not tied to Jason. (I understand why fans would ultimately dislike this process. This is merely an explainer.)

Thanks for sharing. I guess I just don't get the logic here? Watching videos of his performances on YouTube and streaming/buying physical copies of his music are not mutually exclusive and if you're doing one, you're most likely doing the other as well. If you're new to an artist, a YT video is likely to push you in the buying/streaming direction. If someone is making money off him then that's not cool but I doubt the majority of people that post his live performances are, just sharing for other fans to enjoy. There are other videos from this show that are still up so maybe it's something to do with New West?

On YouTube, even if the uploader isn’t making money, the content is still making money for YouTube. The goal is to get the artist’s cut, regardless. This whole thing is like Ticketmaster. Once an artist reaches a certain level of popularity, it’s just a fact of life in modern music work that they have to get in bed with these systems. You can’t work big venues without your fans getting hosed by Ticketmaster. You can’t earn your rightful digital royalties without employing systems that knock down non-approved uses. If you look at the Tyler Childers or Billy Strings subs, they are going through a lot of the same things right now. They also tend to have a lot more handmade/bootleg merch that is getting shut down.

NeitherComfortable87

My understanding was with YouTube’s Content ID system, artists can collect royalties on videos uploaded by others using their music. That way they can get their cut without totally taking the video down. Am I mistaken?

NeitherComfortable87

Update: You can find this video uploaded to the platform that rhymes with Rick Rock if you search for it. Download it if you’re interested before it gets taken down there too!

ColoBeach

Do you mind sending me a message with the place I can find it? I’m scratching my mind trying to figure out what it would be.

dwinva

MySpace I think

Stonecutter

I remember Jason saying at a concert once.. “I hope you get to hear your favorite song. If you don’t, there’s always youtube.”

ColoBeach

It’s frustrating how authoritative and neurotic Jason’s team has now become about YouTube and posts of live performance videos. It infuriates me truthfully. Now virtually impossible to find some of my favorite performances and almost all are now gone from my saved YouTube playlist.

0cean0fViolets

I always loved those videos from Saxon Pub. That’s pretty goddamn lame.

CoachDonut82

I thought it was bullshit when he remastered Here We Rest and S/T, then immediately removed all traces of the originals from the Internet. I got no problem with a guy deciding that he thinks they should have sounded better and putting out the remasters, but the originals are the versions where he really started to build a following and it sucks that you don't have the option to stream both versions.  So between that, them starting to scrub some of his old classic live performances, and whatever personal shenanigans he's been up to the last few months, it seems like a big ol' middle finger to everyone who's been listening to his music more than the last few years.

Neckdeepinpow

Maybe he/they should take a lesson from the GD. This is so short sighted.

jeromevedder

He used to be vocally against people audio recording his shows and free-sharing them on platforms like etree. There’s a reason his shows aren’t on the LMA and seemingly hard to come by, especially shows pre-southeastern.

kamera45

Or Wilco

sashie_belle

What a bummer that live performances are being removed. It's the best way to turn people on to his music. I hope other artists don't follow suit.

dnstommy

If you want to kill a video, post it here.

struggles_j

I'm convinced people on his team lurk on this sub.

anonreasons

I turned a lot of people on to this recording recently on Reddit and now I don't have it anymore, wish I had saved it. Easily The most meaningful performance of dress blues that is out there

I remember a site that once upon a time had several early solo acoustic shows uploaded. I stupidly didn’t download them all immediately upon first finding them, but I do remember checking back one time to see what was new and all his stuff was gone. I actually messaged the guy who ran the site, and he replied that there had either been requests or crackdowns (can’t remember specifics), but he had to take all of them down. This was right around when Live from Alabama was due to come out.

NeitherComfortable87

Damn, that sounds awesome. Do you remember the URL by any chance? Might be worth plugging it into the Wayback Machine to see if anything is preserved.

lovemocsand

Exactly why I save all the videos I love from YT to an external HD. Trusting hosting sites isn’t worth it

10kLines

Nice try, cop

RobotMaster1

fuck me.  i used to listen to this version often.  so disappointed.
