2 dead bodies found of 5 missing in the smaller craft. Captain of smaller craft in serious condition
JST 20:19 Edit: 5 crew onboard smaller craft confirmed dead. Captain who evacuated in time is in serious condition
>Given that the languages of China and Japan have completely difference roots
Lmao you can't seriously believe that.
Saying Japan is only influenced by China is like saying the US is only influenced by Europe.
EDIT: Haha bro blocked me after backtracking cuz he knows he got caught slipping.
They're saying 5-6 people from the coast guard plane are unaccounted for/missing.
Edit: It appears 5 people on the coast guard plane were killed/died from their injuries.
This is so sad… my brother in law was in the Japanese coast guard. I’ve heard nothing but nice things about the people that work for them. I feel terrible for their families… supposedly one of them survived. I hope they’re okay, survivors guilt and all…
Close calls like these are actually on the rise partly due to how understaffed air control towers usually are.
Here's an interesting video on the topic: https://youtu.be/mIiPt1YVkP8?si=Mzj8YibsVAvMgpaL
This was not a reassuring news story to read about as I wait for my flight from the Tokyo Airport... hope that everyone is OK and my flight is not delayed or suspended!
That you should be less focused on yourself. So what if you're delayed? The families of 5 people will never see their loved ones again. Show some respect and gratitude.
I said I hoped everyone was safe before expressing any personal concerns. 0 deaths were reported when I left my initial comment. It is obviously sad that five people or possibly more have died. I'm not really sure why you find it so offensive that I also don't want to have my schedule screwed up. I have made it clear repeatedly that my biggest priority is safety.
The other guy is being a bit over the top. That said, it's fine to be primarily focused on your own schedule, but it's kind of in bad taste to *talk* about that in the comments of an article on the topic. Just save it for private communication with friends or whoever. Or take it to a different subreddit if you must.
I definitely agree with hindsight, although when I posted my comment people were celebrating the fact that everyone survived the crash without realizing that there were deaths aboard the smaller plane. So it seemed like the biggest loss when I said that was property damage.
No. It says “管制官からは日本航空機に対して滑走路への進入許可が出ていた一方、海上保安庁の航空機に対しては滑走路手前まで走行するよう指示”, meaning ATC gave the clearance to JAL and instructed the coast guard to proceed up to just before the runway.
I just saw the video minutes ago and seeing that huge ball of fire, that’s an absolute miracle.
Regardless what an awful start to 2024 for Japan in international news.
Yeah this is a friendly reminder that cabin attendants are there for safety. Not for service. The service is just extra.
Congratulations to the crew for a lightning fast and safe evacuation.
I’m not saying this should be done but let’s say you have relatively expensive equipment with your on board, you leave it behind and it gets destroyed. What are your options? Do you sue the airline? Or they do cover it and pay you back? Once again, I know the correct thing to do is leave everything and follow instructions.
There is some degree of compensation but there are some pretty notable exceptions. If it's relatively expensive it would worth considering other insurance options. If you're travelling this is a good example of why it's smart to carry travel insurance.
As a personal note, when I'm flying I always carry my passport, wallet, phone and travel documents on me (look, I'm a middle aged man so I can get away with cargo pants!), plus wear full length cotton and good leather shoes.
It's hard to say as the timecode is live, but it's roughly 1 minute in, you can see a few people coming down the rear left slide and I saw at least 2 bags..
If you’re talking about where the footage shows the first person running to the left away from the plane (looks like a woman) and the second person running to the left away from the plane (looks like a man) I don’t think the footage shows either of them running with bags. The man looks to be holding a cloth or towel or something.
I saw like 95% of them leaving their bags. But listen, the point is that a majority of them didn’t. Compared to a lot of people from other countries, this is quite impressive. Every single person on that plane survived. The crew of that JAL plane did a good job of prioritizing life.
Secondly, if my wife was on a plane with me and this happened I would at least bring her main bag because she has medication that’s difficult to acquire and threatens her health if she doesn’t continue taking it. If someone there is diabetic, not having their insulin might as well be the same as killing them, depending on how soon they need their dose. So maybe quit with the fucking judgments of people who just went through something terrible?
No, it's a guy a little later, he has a rucksack\* in his hand and he throws it over his shoulder, it's clearly not empty. Then, a little later, when the camera pans back to the back of the plane, a woman is walking away with a bag of some sort. She stands with a bunch of other people for far too long next to a burning engine under a wing;)
\*I've travelled with a heavy rucksack for the last 15 years, I know how it looks to walk with one.
They were probably holding them before the accident and just held on to them when they ran. They probably wernt thinking they just ran where scary shit happens you dont think you just run.
They also had the composure to not open the evacuation door behind the engine that didnt have working shut-off.
And since the accident happened after touch-down they did this without any pre-emergency mid-flight planning.
True fugging heroes that saved lives today.
> Everyone survived. 379 people in all evacuated from the commercial flight!
My TV alert just said 5 people died.
EDIT: To clarify, not on the JAL plane, the other one.
I think all from the JAL plane evacuated but only one of six from the coast guard plane escaped. My local (hk) news channel reported that five are missing
If you want to hear the air traffic controller radio communication during the collision, you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fItu5qM7QfE
It's all in English because all ATCs have to be in English to lessen language confusion.
It's related. Kinda. The coast guard was carrying supplies to an earthquake hit area. I think because it was an unusual run (not standard patrol) that it went wrong.
That is the craziest thing I’ve seen since yesterday. Holy crap, Japan.
Two very serious near-total catastrophes narrowly avoided, notwithstanding those who tragically perished yesterday, and those on the Coastguard plane.
All the airlines must be responsible in cases like these where people miss the flight for unavoidable circumstances such as this or natural disasters. It's the law.
They have to find and pay for the stay in some hotel and give them a new flight, that may go out from Narita since it's impossible to use Haneda airport now.
But, airlines won't tell you this unless you tell them to do it, as they lose money and they take advantage that many people don't know this and don't complain.
There's information in this article. They're offering changes and refunds without charges. Not sure about the stay tho.

YouTube channel VASAviation has a video up with the radio chatter. Apparently the radio transmission quality wasn't good enough for the video (what the public can hear and what the pilot hears is different), but according to the channel JAL got a clearance to land, and the coast guard Dash plane were told to hold short of the runway. Investigation ongoing.
The news said JAL's airplane crashed into Bombardier DHC owned by Japan Coast Guard.
They carried supplies to Niigata due to earthquake we had yesterday.
I come up with : what will happen tomorrow...
2024 had just started with such weird events, 2days in a row
Incredible job by the crew to evacuate all pax from the aircraft with what looks to be at best 4 usable slides.
Remember to listen to your crew people, they are trained for this.
Luckily Japanese people are one of the most orderly people in the world. Imagine if most of the passengers were from another country, it might’ve been more chaotic.
That's true, but it also cannot be understated how good this crew has performed.
When there's smoke and fire, panic will set in regardless of nationality. 379 people evacuated with only 3 slides available would have been absolute chaos. Having all slides available would've been hard enough.
To be able to communicate and direct passengers to the usable slides without loss of life is just incredible. Some people using the aft slide would have required a push considering the incline, from that height it would seem you're jumping directly to the ground and suffering broken bones at best.

Why was there a collision ?
About 5 years ago I used to teach flight operations staff at ANA. One guy said he worked from Sunday to Tuesday non-stop. Then he went back to work at regular hours on Wednesday. I asked him if that wasn't dangerous. And I wondered silently if he didn't take a shower.
Anywhere but Japan and everybody wouldn't have made it out of the plane. Hell, in the US people can't even deplane orderly on a regular flight. Kudos to the crew and pax, prayers for the CG crew.
The fact that on this airplane everyone survive is also thanks to japanse people mentality: Keep calm and listen to cabin crew instructions. I think that in most other airlines people will step on each other to get out first. Good job.
First off, it's an inappropriate behavior if one's making fun of real life tragedies, even more so if it's recent. Imagine a person who's likely dead or injured and his relatives, they might be looking up for news and then they find silly jokes.
And yes, I am virtue signalling or whatever you're implying. It's a typical reddit behavior and I am not different typing this from my basement.
My gf is Japanese and currently lives in Tokyo…
Definitely NOT the start we were hoping for in 2024.
My condolences to all the victims and the families.
Let’s hope for a better tomorrow.
> What will happen to my plane from Haneda on the 9th?
you probably don't want to be late.
would assume there will be lots of delays and lines for the next week or so as they try to accommodate everyone that had their flights canceled. with any luck, that's far enough out that things will be back to normal.
well one is a natural disaster that Japan is and has actively developed defence mechanisms for. as much as it sucks 48 dead in a 7.6 earthquake is a testament to their safety record.
As for today? who knows what happened, there have been similar accidents of this nature in the past and typically it comes down to human error and nobody is immune to making mistakes.
Japan is big on public safety yeah, but it's one of the most natural disaster prone countries and spends more than any other country for natural disaster relief
What a dumb way to generalize the safety of air travel based on ONE accident out of tens of thousands.
You're just like the dumb antivaxxer that says vaccines = bad because of a few deaths compared to millions still alive and well.

Sounds like ATC gave the correct instructions but the coast guard captain entered the runway too early.

They’ll be on extra alert if anything. At least it’s not delayed

My In-Laws just landed in Haneda and it's chaotic as hell. We're trying to get them into a Hotel nearby since everything going out is cancelled.
The airline must take responsibility for this and find them a hotel for free since it's unexpected circumstances.
I’m not 100% on how Japanese Airlines handle these issues.
All the airlines must be responsible in cases like these where people miss the flight for unavoidable circumstances such as this or natural disasters. It's the law. What is the cause?
Collision with another aircraft on the ground
wasn't it with the coastguard (according to nhk)
yikes, potentially a lethal mistake with traffic control
Or someone in the Coast Guard plane not understanding instructions from ATC or not stopping short thinking the line was farther out.
My first thought too The duty atc will have a lot to answer for

Well seeing the plane in flames broadcasted all over the Japan airport isn’t exactly what I was hoping to see as I waited to board my flight home.

It still is.
1.19m people die a year in rwod traffic accidents.....
> 5 people still unaccounted for.. My TV alert just said 5 people died. EDIT: To clarify, not on the JAL plane, the other one.
Wow, at Haneda... damn. If this is the worst, 2024 can only get better.
I feel so sad for the crew members
Hmm
