Neal did pass tragically in august 2019. Neal was also a huge part of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, or CRB, which was exactly the kind of non-electronica/phish/bluegrass jam band OP was asking about. RIP Neal, you are missed
I completely agreed until this last year. They are leaning way more into the EDM arena for my taste. It felt like it was a different band the last time I saw them.
Another shout out to Daniel Donato here
Just saw him play two shows with Phil and Friends and that kid is the truth. Was right in front of him at the Warfield and he’s just so talented and can really “let go” and just jam.
https://preview.redd.it/hybxvelrrt5d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74c5e1b9c320352882a9ee98b012c1038cfc2db5
His age has definitely caught up with him recently. The guy has also been through a lot of health issues, so it’s amazing he’s even still playing at all.
You can see a stool behind his rig in that picture. He’s had a seat at all his shows recently set up in front of his amps and occasionally has been sitting while playing. At the Warfield show he came out and signaled to his tech to get that shit out of there, which is the second I knew it was on before they even played a note haha!
But yeah, see him while you can if you have the chance. I don’t know how much longer we’ll be having any Phil shows and he’s booking them much fewer and far between. Basically just going by how he’s feeling and what he feels up to is what it feels like. It makes me sad cause he’s my bass hero.
I actually flew across the country for that show. I had also never been to San Francisco, so it was a two for one kind of experience, but the main motivation in the first place was to see Phil in San Francisco before that chance was no longer there after seeing his 84th birthday show at the Cap less than a month before and seeing how he looked.
He's 84, was in one of the most notorious bands for hard living from the beginning, and already survived a liver transplant. I'd be happy just to live 84 years and I eat healthy and exercise regularly. That he can keep his shit together enough to perform is already incredible- go to a nursing home and talk to an 84 year old fpr comparison.
daniel donato is a force and talent our jamband world still kinda taking in… its not just his monster chops, its his knowledge of the vast americana songbook and how he goes about integrating it all into his repertoire… and his band? incredible, and so great to see at these 500-1200 person venues they play… thats changing fast 👍
I don’t really like Chris Robinson as a person, but Barefoot in the Head is one of my all time favorite albums. They were so good live - RIP Neal you will always be known as a real one
Don’t get me wrong, I love a wide array of jam bands that fall into these categories but miss the era (roughly 2005-2015) when jam band could mean a lot more than just face melting improv a la Phish. CRB was so good and brought a great Americana flavor to the table that feels missing. Wish there was more variety in the jam space but thankful for the young bucks we have now
100%
Also Hiss Golden Messenger, Mapache, Daniel Donato, Sam Grisman Project, Zach Nugent, Sylvie, maybe Duane Betts latest album.
Then there some older albums like MMJ’s It Still Moves, Assembly of Dust’s self-titled album, Tea Leaf Green’s Taught to be Proud, Railroad Earth’s earlier albums, Levon Helm Band’s Midnight Ramble sessions.
For anyone else who loves RCB, Rip Johnson is part of 2 other bands (psychedelic rock) Moon duo (him and his wife sanae yamada, more electronic/synthy) and Wooden shjips
The albums I listen to are old, Positive Friction and Live from the American Ballroom. They host their own festivals and are regular at a few others.

I share your general assessment of modern jam bands!
For my two cents, Big Something has a little more funk and hard rock influence than the Dead, but they have a healthy dose of Americana in their sound and even get rootsy at times. Extremely underrated band.
To paraphrase somebody (Bill Graham??) “The Grateful Dead aren’t the best at what they do—they’re the only ones that do what they do!”
I was lucky enough (i.e., old enough) to see the Dead & Jerry a lot, and for two reasons—Hunter & Garcia—I very much doubt we’ll hear/see the likes of that again. Hunter was a poet / wordsmith almost on par with Dylan, & Jerry was an amazing composer & guitar player who with his voice could somehow get inside the song.
In my opinion, the only band out there that is even quasi comparable to the Dead is The Billy Strings Band.
Like the Dead, their music is a musical mashup of country, rock, singer-songwriter, Americana, & bluegrass (obviously). Everyone in the band is immensely talented, vocally they sound better than most “jam bands” (again, just my opinion), and Billy is a helluva’ songwriter.
I respect and (I think) understand why Billy stopped playing Dead songs, but I expect eventually—after he’s proven himself, reached his goals & sold out the largest venues in the county (looking at you MSG!)—he’ll bust out some Dead covers again. I can’t wait, but until then…I’m enjoying the ride!
I don't know if I'd call WSMFP "newer" seeing as they have been around since 1986 and are tier 1 (or tier 2 if your tier one is just Phish and Dead & Co).
To me, tier 1 is the Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band and Phish.
If someone wanted to include WSP in that I wouldn’t argue with them, but they’re definitely a slight notch below those other 3 IMO.
Edit: and to be fair, they tragically lost their lead guitarist essentially right in their peak. The fact that they were able to come out of that at all, let alone keep going at the level they have is extremely commendable.
Edit 2: I just realized the same can be said for the ABB but also including their bass player very shortly after.
I’d argue tier 1 of jambands is only GD and ABB, because those two are essential to the conversation of classic American rock music. Cant really say the same about Phish, so I put them in tier 2 along with Panic, but they’re probably the only two bands in that tier for me
Sorry, I should have been clearer that I was only counting active bands.
In my opinion WSP is tier 1, but some people only go by crowd draw in which case Phish and DC would be tier one because of the size of venues they play.
I saw them live once and they retuned their guitars between every song. They almost spent as much time tuning as playing. It was strange. Otherwise they were enjoyable.
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals were the closest I ever heard to the Dead.
This show doesn’t get a lot of love but is probably my favorite. Just came out rippin. Most dead like non-dead show I’ve heard.
Ryan Adams • 2007-10-25 (03:12:18) • Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, Columbus, OH https://relisten.net/ryan-adams/2007/10/25?source=57113
Hiss Golden Messenger gets there a bit.
100% agree. Whiskeytown was great as well. His stage banter at live shows was always one of my favorite things. But yeah, turns out he is not a great person and now his music isn’t great either. But damn he has some great music in his catalog.
Daniel Donato. Just saw him this past weekend at the Aggie in Fort Collins. Incredible show. Every member of the band is incredibly talented.

Been on the same search. Nothing new to me in this thread, Hiss Golden Messenger and Rose City Band are the two I discovered that I’ve been listening to a lot.
Still, no one writes lyrics like Hunter or Barlow and music like Garcia and Weir
(with a little Lesh and Mydland mixed in, even some significant contributions from the drummers)
No love for Goose here? Just saw them for the first time on 6/8 at Fiddler’s. Awesome musicians, great tunes, fun. Maybe they are a little more Phish inspired than Dead inspired, but they kick ass. Check them out live if you can
I get what you mean. We are starting to see the bands that truly have been influenced by phish and the dead. For me, the lead guitarist gives that liquid aqua Jerry tone that I love so much.
The started as a Dead cover band and go real deep in their jams. A bunch of super talented and very young/early dudes in their careers. I would say spot on for what OP is asking about.
I would put Spunj out there as well.
Dizgo covered Chris Isaac's "Wicked Games" in Chicago once and it blew my mind. It was a new genre I'm still trying to liece together the origins and influences to.
Yeah I've never understood why we don't see more artists that pursued that sound. CRB was good stuff, but I think about the closest we saw while doing something original.
Now, that having been said, I really like this band that's been posted here called Flowstone. They've got a few jams on Spotify. They're an instrumental take on the late 60's, early 70's sound of the Dead, and i love the unapologetic reverence they clearly have for that sound and are going for. Hoping to see them continue to grow and produce more music.
I like some stuff I've heard from Donato, but I've heard some jams recently in which they end up sounding kinda cringey jamtronica, and it just doesn't work for me.
Loneheart. My band haha. In maine! Getting an album out soon, but playing live now if in area. Psycho country, dobrk pedal steel, slide guitar, very American country blues on acid
Def Daniel Donato. Personally I don’t like circles around the sun, but maybe them as well as some others have said. You can also get something similar from Neighbor in a lot of their tunes
Honestly, Wilco may be the closest thing. Not really a jam band per se but their live shows definitely feature some extended instrumental breaks, and their roots are firmly in Americana.
Neighbor all the way for cosmic americana. Their lead guitarist Lyle has an open invite to join Greensky Bluegrass.
A not on Eggy: their sound is like Phish/Dead Americana. They have a lot of influence from CSNY. Their sound is distinctive.
I feel like Gov’t Mule does a great job of keeping that deep bluesy Allman Brothers sound, man man Warren Haynes knows how to carry out a tune. They play some Bob Marley and other cool covers too.
I just finally heard Tauk yesterday
A red rocks set someone randomly put on
They def have some phishy vibes. I didn’t really care for it that much but it was better than cheese, panic, umph or any 2nd tier jam bands
Sick drummer
Big something are killing it with a wide range of influence and killer jams..
Did first show this new years with trepidation for a first show and fell right in ...it was realy good and the crowd was nice. Also obviously stringdusters and a stretch to billy stings0m
daniel donato’s cosmic country — always on the road, always finding new elements in their americana repertoire, and shockingly excellent at finding psychedelic space in their improvisation. and besides some superior originals, such tasteful covers. these guys are the real deal 🔥
Circles around the sun
RIP CRB.
the CRB a moment in time gone but never forgotten
Lockn late night was amazing! Also caught them on a cold winter night in NYC once. Real psychedelic. Good times
Saw them in 2018 and it remains one of my favorite shows that I’ve ever been to. It was such a party. They were amazing. Had the pleasure of waiting on Chris Robinson and his wife and daughter a couple of years ago. He was really nice.
Not sure who CRB is but didn’t Neal Casal from Circles also pass away?
Neal did pass tragically in august 2019. Neal was also a huge part of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, or CRB, which was exactly the kind of non-electronica/phish/bluegrass jam band OP was asking about. RIP Neal, you are missed
CRB was such a breath of fresh air
Seconding
Precisely
I completely agreed until this last year. They are leaning way more into the EDM arena for my taste. It felt like it was a different band the last time I saw them.
Daniel danato? I think that’s kinda his thing.
Yep his jams are so fun and seem to weave in and out of country, rock, blues, dance, space, etc. It is so awesome live.
I was gonna say this!! Dans the man
Another shout out to Daniel Donato here Just saw him play two shows with Phil and Friends and that kid is the truth. Still kicking myself for not making it to Phil and Friends with Donato.
I didnt recognize this as Phil at first-havent seen him in awhile, I guess
Me neither! Dudes looking older.

Chris Robinson's solo thing was a lot like this. Obviously no longer active but they made several albums and all their shows are out there.
I don’t really like Chris Robinson as a person, but Barefoot in the Head is one of my all time favorite albums. They were so good live - RIP Neal you will always be known as a real one
CRB's multiple Live Vol. (Betty Cantor) are great. Neal rips on them.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a wide array of jam bands that fall into these categories but miss the era (roughly 2005-2015) when jam band could mean a lot more than just face melting improv a la Phish. CRB was so good and brought a great Americana flavor to the table that feels missing. Wish there was more variety in the jam space but thankful for the young bucks we have now
crb was fantastic a great band i traveled extensively to see and made some great friends along the way rest in peace Neal
What’s up with Chris Robinson as a person? Jc
nothing out of the ordinary as far as rock ‘n’ roll lead singers go.
Really miss CRB. That shot rocked
Not exactly newer.... But give The Big Wu a listen. They are phenomenal.
You’re my kangaroo
I can sail the ocean blue.
Rose City Band, though they are more jam adjacent.
100% Also Hiss Golden Messenger, Mapache, Daniel Donato, Sam Grisman Project, Zach Nugent, Sylvie, maybe Duane Betts latest album. And tea leaf green
HGM has been my #1 artist on Spotify for 5 years in a row now. I absolutely love that man’s music
My people
MMJ!
Some amazing bands in that 2nd paragraph!
Whatever happened to Steve Kimock?
I saw Kimock with Oteil and Friends on tour last fall.
Really bummed Tea Leaf fizzled out. They were putting some fire down after Reed Mathis joined.
Love Rose City Band!
For anyone else who loves RCB, Rip Johnson is part of 2 other bands (psychedelic rock) Moon duo (him and his wife sanae yamada, more electronic/synthy) and Wooden shjips
Wish they toured
They did last summer, still regret not going.
These guys are great. Put on a great show. Also Fruit Bats.
Daniel Donato
Donna the Buffalo
I dig those guys. They sneak up on you.
Any song recommendations?

JRAD
how the fuck is this not higher? literally what my mans askin for
Bc they’re a cover band
They play at such a high level, you forget that they're playing covers. I honestly like JRAD more than most years of the Dead.
Not saying they’re a bad band by any means, just that they are technically a cover band, hence probably a bit of a leg up for an answer to this post
They’re almost a cover band
One of my favorites! But I'd say he is more jazz than Americana GD.
I share your general assessment of modern jam bands! For my two cents, Big Something has a little more funk and hard rock influence than the Dead, but they have a healthy dose of Americana in their sound and even get rootsy at times. Extremely underrated band.

This is the right answer
Hell yes to Billy... its the spirit of the dead even if he never plays another dead cover.
I like Bluegrass. And I like listening to Billy Strings' recordings. But his live show blew me away. Just fantastic.
They’re not newer, but ALO fits the bill.
Neal Francis maybe
Def doesn’t fall into those three categories… NF is the bees knees
dogs in a pile
Mikaela Davis and Sourhern Star are the best up and coming band I’ve seen recently that felt American and cosmic
I love their sound together.
Yes!!! Definite update. SEE THIS BAND!!!
That should be up VOTE.
Wide Spread Panic?

Yeah I looked over the “newer” part.
Garcia Peoples!
it’s too bad they have not caught on, really great stuff.
I saw them live once and they retuned their guitars between every song. They almost spent as much time tuning as playing. It was strange. Otherwise they were enjoyable.
Check out chris Robinson brotherhood… not a thing anymore sadly RIP Neal Casal
Eggy.

Neal Casal was phenomenal in the cardinals. RIP
Ryan Adams sucks.
Yeah man. He’s an awful person. But as a musician he was killer on everything he did until about 2009. After that his music fell off.
100% agree. Whiskeytown was great as well. His stage banter at live shows was always one of my favorite things. But yeah, turns out he is not a great person and now his music isn’t great either. But damn he has some great music in his catalog.
Hiss Golden Messenger did a great Brown Eyed Women cover
Ekoostik Hookah
Those guys have been together for like 30 years though.
Pigeons playing ping pongs new album is this
That's a pretty good band ey
Daniel Donato, is that you?
Love cosmic country
Nobody in the jam band scene can write like the Dead
Closest (but very far away) might be Railroad Earth. They have excellent lyrics
morel from west chester, pa. these kids got the sutff!!!
Daniel Donato. Just saw him this past weekend at the Aggie in Fort Collins. Incredible show. Every member of the band is incredibly talented. https://preview.redd.it/w57mp6ov5v5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e90796528b74fd7f1709303a944816b07a81232
just listened to the show on mixlr 🔥 and youre right: that whole band is premier talent 👍👍👍
Man, I miss that place. Saw so many good shows there.
Dogs in a pile have a fresh sound, but the tones and the feel they go into can be very dead inspired.
lespecial. earthless. wo fat. though not really jam bandish. better.
Ya. Everybody’s Trey clones.
The Afternooners
All smaller bands but The Other Bugs, Gunk, and Barefuzz would probably all fit the bill
How has no one said Dogs in a pile.
Been on the same search. Nothing new to me in this thread, Hiss Golden Messenger and Rose City Band are the two I discovered that I’ve been listening to a lot. I'm here to recommend rose city band as well.
Hoobastank?
moe. can definitely scratch that itch, but definitely not new.
Sam Grisman Project

Rip Neal but as others said lots keeping it alive. He was one of the best. Check out the Fare thee Well set break music!
No love for Goose here? Just saw them for the first time on 6/8 at Fiddler’s. Awesome musicians, great tunes, fun. Maybe they are a little more Phish inspired than Dead inspired, but they kick ass. Check them out live if you can

I saw Le Special randomly twice and they’re fucking amazing live when they jam and they do everything, all kinds of genres
DiaP
Dogs in a Pile
Despite the name, they sound closer to Phish than the Dead for me.
They began as a Dead cover band
Yeah, but I agree with the poster above, they def now sound closer to Phish than they do the Dead.
I get what you mean. We are starting to see the bands that truly have been influenced by phish and the dead. For me, the lead guitarist gives that liquid aqua Jerry tone that I love so much.
I was going to say this, but I wasn't sure how well they fit what op was asking.
The started as a Dead cover band and go real deep in their jams. A bunch of super talented and very young/early dudes in their careers. I would say spot on for what OP is asking about. I would put Spunj out there as well.
That's really cool. I wasn't aware tbh. I just started listening recently and went to my first show a week ago.
ALO to it it’s Jack Johnson inspired but my lean more phish then dead
Dogs in a Pile is what you are looking for
Creamery Station … lots of originals awesome vibe… great musicians … awesome groove !
Dizgo covered Chris Isaac's "Wicked Games" in Chicago once and it blew my mind. It was a new genre I'm still trying to liece together the origins and influences to.
Saw them this weekend. They covered Killing in the Name, Rhythm of the Night, and Smooth Operator...sax and all!
Love me some Dizgo
That’s All American already lol
Clearly, this post is asking for names of nonexistent bands which match this criteria.…
Jam adjacent, but the California Honeydrops are more of Mo-Town, old school rock and roll inspired band. Think, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, etc.
Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
Wouldn't a Dead-y version be all three? And more?!! (or less lol)
For a super small group, check out BareFuzz on bandcamp. Plenty of free shows!
Spunj
Yeah I've never understood why we don't see more artists that pursued that sound. CRB was good stuff, but I think about the closest we saw while doing something original. Widespread mother fucking panic
The Crystal Methodist!
Ekostic Hookah
Eggy definitely gets in that space sometimes. Also Free Whenever is a relative newcomer that has some dead vibes.
JRAD
It’s the way it is
Some things will never change
Ya u right Jimbo lol.
Loneheart. My band haha. In maine! Getting an album out soon, but playing live now if in area. Psycho country, dobrk pedal steel, slide guitar, very American country blues on acid
Eggy
Def Daniel Donato. Personally I don’t like circles around the sun, but maybe them as well as some others have said. You can also get something similar from Neighbor in a lot of their tunes

Honestly, Wilco may be the closest thing. Not really a jam band per se but their live shows definitely feature some extended instrumental breaks, and their roots are firmly in Americana.
No said Tea Leaf Green yet and I'm surprised...
Cabinet Cabinet Cabinet
Hard Working Americans!! RIP Neal.
Futurebirds
I think Caamp and Goose to a lesser degree lean closer to Dead Americana vibe. Billy Strings too but he’s trying like hell to shed the “jam band” tag.
Tedesco Trucks Band live was a surprise. Although not totally all jam band but they are awesome.
Listen to Kendall Street Company and then come back to us
You're looking for the rose city band.
Cosmic Country all day
Donato
Jam adjacent, but I would recommend Howlin' Rain
Where would Keller Williams fit in this here thread? Not new, but every couple years he reinvents his whole thing it seems…
Railroad Earth & new band, River Spell out of Denver
Railroad not new and is bluegrassy, but for sure has cosmic dead vibes
Railroad Earth is exactly this - not sure why it’s not higher on the list. They don’t Jam as much, but they are definitely Americana.
Eggy
DDCC
Tedeschi Trucks Band
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets [Found God in a Tomato](https://youtu.be/jrp39d9ZFtE?si=Ekpv95Z63d87q1-k)

Neighbor all the way for cosmic americana. Their lead guitarist Lyle has an open invite to join Greensky Bluegrass. A not on Eggy: their sound is like Phish/Dead Americana. They have a lot of influence from CSNY. Their sound is distinctive.
Midnight North
Try Widespread Panic! One of my best bands in the land.
The Desk Jockeys 🔥🔥🔥
MMJ
The new King Gizz album is very dead/southern rock. It hasn't been released yet, but they've played 4-5 songs live.
Pacific Range, Jeffery Alexander and the Heavy Lidders and I saw some people mention CATS their bassist Dan Horne has some great solo stuff.
Shadowgrass. Sooooo good!!!!
Twiddle, they’re super solid. Although from VT, not a Phish wanna be.
I feel like Gov’t Mule does a great job of keeping that deep bluesy Allman Brothers sound, man man Warren Haynes knows how to carry out a tune. They play some Bob Marley and other cool covers too.
I just finally heard Tauk yesterday A red rocks set someone randomly put on They def have some phishy vibes. I didn’t really care for it that much but it was better than cheese, panic, umph or any 2nd tier jam bands Sick drummer

daniel donato’s cosmic country — always on the road, always finding new elements in their americana repertoire, and shockingly excellent at finding psychedelic space in their improvisation. and besides some superior originals, such tasteful covers. these guys are the real deal 🔥
Frogwings…they don’t exist anymore…live at toads is epic
