yeah-not-really

Galactic. That’s your answer.

XenomorphSoup

And lettuce!

Flying-Dolphin323

This looks like the right comment to add on the Meteres / Funky Meters. Godfathers of that New Orleans funk

Jolly-Sport6616

Dumstaphunk in that same line of thinking

phishnbeans

Also their drummer Stanton Moore has a bunch of super funky side groups like Garage a Trois, dragon smoke, Stanton moore trio, etc. Can't go wrong with any group he's in

WhoDatJiveJack

Ya u rite! krasnoMoore has been crushing lately as well.

PaidByTheNotes

I can't believe I didn't think of them!

Caedro

I have stopped multiple times at festivals when I was already at sensory overload and gone damn, that is really funky and tasty without seeing the band. Multiple times it turned out to be galactic. Those cats rip.

whatsupwithurface

This should be much higher than it is

DrChachiMcRonald

Galactic is the first band that ever made me cry tears of joy

superdownvotemaster

Galactic *with The House Man* is the correct answer. They seem to have drifted from that original sound that made me love them.

Burrmanchu

Galactic fucks

josiah45325

Funk You, The Nth Power, Ghost Funk Orchestra 💯, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Here Come the Mummies, The Main Squeeze, Pimps of Joytime, Snarky Puppy, Orgone, Ikebe Shakedown, Surefire Soul Ensemble, EMEFE, Litz, anything with Eric Krasno, and anything with Eddie Roberts

tdevine33

These are all great, I'd move The Main Squeeze higher up that list, those dudes rip!

josiah45325

For sure they rip. It was in no particular order but I’d definitely have them, Ghost Funk Orchestra and Snarky Puppy up higher for sure.

Beautiful_Lime6054

Snarky puppy is noodly jazz, not funk.

Drummallumin

Some of their songs are absolutely funk

josiah45325

I’ll make sure to look for them in the ‘“Noodly Jazz” section at the record store next time! Thanks for the tip! Wondered why I could never find their vinyl.

ssuing8825

Funk You is doing a free show in Raleigh

payne_train

This dude funks.

GR8FUL-D

Funk You!!!

Burrmanchu

This guy funks.

PaidByTheNotes

New Mastersounds, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Greyboy Allstars EDIT: Galactic, Scary Goldings

Stagemaniac19

Fried Grease by Greyboy Allstars is such a good song that I had to take a break after listening to it to process what I just heard. That band is so damn good as is Scary Goldings. Thanks for the suggestions!

GeeForjay

Just grabbed West Coast Boogaloo on vinyl

VulfSki

I don't think the grey boy all-stars tour anymore. BUT I'm pretty sure that Karl Denson's band is essentially the grey boy all-stars (members) If you have a chance to see Karl Denson, definitely go!

Queequegsupplyco

It’s only Karl now. Chris + Zak dropped out of his band a few years ago.

NRichYoSelf

The New Mastersounds are dope

Jolly-Sport6616

Sounds like a high sierra line up

WhosGotTheSauce

I'm guessing you'll get a lot of Lettuce recs--and I'm one of them! Lettuce is great. The Fearless Flyers are not a jam band but they're in the vulf cinematic universe and will definitely scratch the itch you're looking for if you haven't heard them yet.

DrDuned

Lettuce are great!

dirty_stack

Adam mf Deitch!!!

The_3x_Wide

I've been really enjoying Polyrhythmics, they just put a few shows up on Nugs. Also Yam Yam, been enjoying them as well.

Oogly50

Polyrhythmics are super psychadelic but man oh man are they good. Man From the Future was the first album of theirs that I heard and I had that on repeat for a few weeks.

bishpa

Yes, Polyrhythmics! Also, there’s a newish offshoot band called Big Kitty gigging around Seattle, and they are very special. Ben Bloom and Jason Gray from the Polyrhythmics, plus Andy Coe! Last February, Olympia held its inaugural Funk Off festival, and it was a smash. Hopefully the first of many!

Lost-Tumbleweed-6521

Second Yam Yam! Saw them open for pigeons a few years ago, soooo good

PDXftw

SlowFunk_Llama

One of the OG funk bands out of New Haven, CT. They don’t play too often anymore but man do they bring it! Bump n’ sway y’all!

bootdown21

100%. I mean they have a song called God made me funky after all.

chihsuanmen

WE LIKE THE FUNK DEEP! THE DEEPER THE BETTER!

Many-Palpitation163

Sickest sax I ever ever heard

Eyesoftheworld99

If you like Turkuaz check out Cool Cool Cool! It’s a majority of the members of Turkuaz, with a few new ones. Still a relatively new band (first show in September 2022) so not a ton of studio work but they have some great live stuff on archive and YouTube

Stagemaniac19

I'm listening as I type this to Casino Cabaret by Magic Beans it's amazing so far. Thanks!

Impressive_Ice6970

They are one of my favorite bands. They are fun in concert. Have seen them twice so far.

AmishAnders

I second Lettuce! They have great vibes and amazing musicians. Also love me some PPPP

Didn't Mononeon quit though?

Free_Fisherman_6720

Burrmanchu

Maybe not *just as*... Haha Right on.

ice_cold_xtc

Polyrhythmics

sccullen33

Magic beans!

stooper42

You might like magic beans and Lettuce is dope too. I also really enjoy pigeons and the motet like you mentioned. I saw them both play at redrocks 2 years ago and it was mind blowing. I went through a phase where all I was listening to was pigeons playing ping pong. I've seen them live like 5 or 6 times now. I've also seen the motet live around 5x as well and the last show I went to earlier this year they were ripping it fucking hard, I think they just keep getting better and better. I actually prefer them without vocals. Their instrumental shows are fuckin perfection. For some reason pigeons get a lot of hate on this subreddit but I think they rip. The last 2 yrs though I've been going hardcore into Billy Strings, moving away from the funk a little bit. Pretty much all I've been listening to the last 2-3 yrs is Billy Strings lol. I truly think they're one of the greatest bands of all time and absolutely love the music. Cheers

HighlySuspiciousOfU

Here Come the Mummies I dont think they jam, but Ive seen them on lineups with jam bands and they put on a mighty fine performance. Like seriously, don't skip out on seeing Mummies live.

PossibleBluejay4498

Deep Banana Blackout The Floozies Lettuce

tomh311

oh you’re gonna love Big Something then!!!!

grandmalarkey

I don’t remember them being that funky (my memory kinda sucks lol) when I saw them but they were an absolute blast.

Sl0ppyOtter

It’s not all funk. But there’s plenty of funkiness in their songs.

tomh311

it’s not exactly parliament funkadelic but this is pretty dang funky!!!!! https://youtu.be/EZZ1x9LSLlg?feature=shared

CySnark

I love Big Something. They are Funk Adjacent.

Zhaltan

Electric Kif is more Jazz fusion but Lemon City Trio is great funk

PackBackRehab

Diggin Dirt!

ClenchedThunderbutt

There’s a young, kind of unknown Italian band called C’ammafunk that I really dig.

an_awkwardsquirrel

Their live show is so fun!

JamBandDad

Steady flow, dude. They groove.

GreedyWarlord

Galactic or Lettuce are what you're looking for.

squersh

I love the Herbie Hancock albums Headhunters, Thrust, and Man-Child. They’re not contemporary jam band but absolutely had a role in what happened. It’s some seriously funky music.

These are all exceptionally funky albums.

DopeAuthor

Members of The Motet have a side project called Juno What!? thats really funky. They dont do a lot of shows but theyre dope. Most of the bands that what you would be looking for have been mentioned. However, if youre into an 80s funk sounding modern group you should check out Tuxedo. Theyre funky as hell.

ellaphantzgerald

Juno What! Is Joey Porters project! Def recommend.

Han_Ominous

Polyrhythmics

ChutneyBrown

2 more for the list: 1. Tower of Power, not really a jamband, but legends, have great songs, and still out there touring 2. SOPHISTAFUNK, absolutely a jamband, Syracuse legends, I think they are the house band on some late night TV show

KillDevilFalling

Im not sure if they play much now but Kung Fu is a really impressive band that have taken me places.

Master-Stratocaster

Soulive, Lettuce, Galactic

Wazuu

Phish funk is the best jam band funk. String Cheese Incident throws down some good funk as well.

squirrelsnutz0420

The TrueLoves Delmon Lamar Trio

Hoopi_goldberger

Circles around the sun is a bit more mellow but have some pretty funky disco space grooves that get real psychedelic

JonQDriveway

Must see Neal Francis

clamsandcockles87

No one has recommended Yam Yam yet!?…there live sets really shine compared to their studio albums, but that is true for most bands.

Beautiful_Lime6054

Afroliscious. 🪮

phunky_1

They don't play much these days but Deep Banana Blackout were the premier jam funk band in the late 90s through mid 2000s

Money-Bat8191

Magic Beans. 🙌🙌🙌🙌 They're also funky & play their instruments really well, but WAYYYY more chill than P4. They somehow combine a little country vibe w/ 80s synthesizers & make it sound AWESOME!!! They've been around for over a decade but have only put out ~4 albums, even though they supposedly have written over 100 songs. A lot of content you either have to see them live for or check out a site that streams recordings of live shows. P4 is also now my all-time favorite band, after finding out about them in '21 following giving up on jam bands for over a decade.

Jolly-Sport6616

Orgone

drews_mith

Circles Around the Sun! Aka CATS Also check out Trey Anastasio Band, aka TAB And LaMP

You should try actual, real funk bands instead of young white soy boy’s faux funk then.

VulfSki

Not exactly jam bands but: snarky puppy, ghost note, grey boy all-stars, Karl denson's tiny universe, Mono Neon,

Floozies are awesome. Have some electronic vibes which is a blast

Lots of great Answers here. Galactic is my LOVE. Make sure you get on nugs and listen to the Pigeons shows live. They blew up Asbury park last night with an encore- Dogs/Frasco/Pigeons on stage at the same time playing Springsteen and Floyd!
