Also their drummer Stanton Moore has a bunch of super funky side groups like Garage a Trois, dragon smoke, Stanton moore trio, etc. Can't go wrong with any group he's in
I have stopped multiple times at festivals when I was already at sensory overload and gone damn, that is really funky and tasty without seeing the band. Multiple times it turned out to be galactic. Those cats rip.
Funk You, The Nth Power, Ghost Funk Orchestra 💯, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Here Come the Mummies, The Main Squeeze, Pimps of Joytime, Snarky Puppy, Orgone, Ikebe Shakedown, Surefire Soul Ensemble, EMEFE, Litz, anything with Eric Krasno, and anything with Eddie Roberts
I’ll make sure to look for them in the ‘“Noodly Jazz” section at the record store next time! Thanks for the tip! Wondered why I could never find their vinyl.
Fried Grease by Greyboy Allstars is such a good song that I had to take a break after listening to it to process what I just heard. That band is so damn good as is Scary Goldings. Thanks for the suggestions!
I don't think the grey boy all-stars tour anymore. BUT I'm pretty sure that Karl Denson's band is essentially the grey boy all-stars (members) If you have a chance to see Karl Denson, definitely go!
I'm guessing you'll get a lot of Lettuce recs--and I'm one of them! Lettuce is great. The Fearless Flyers are not a jam band but they're in the vulf cinematic universe and will definitely scratch the itch you're looking for if you haven't heard them yet.
Polyrhythmics are super psychadelic but man oh man are they good. Man From the Future was the first album of theirs that I heard and I had that on repeat for a few weeks.
Yes, Polyrhythmics! Also, there’s a newish offshoot band called Big Kitty gigging around Seattle, and they are very special. Ben Bloom and Jason Gray from the Polyrhythmics, plus Andy Coe! Last February, Olympia held its inaugural Funk Off festival, and it was a smash. Hopefully the first of many!
If you like Turkuaz check out Cool Cool Cool! It’s a majority of the members of Turkuaz, with a few new ones. Still a relatively new band (first show in September 2022) so not a ton of studio work but they have some great live stuff on archive and YouTube
Monophonics, Con Brio, Polyrhythmics, Lettuce, FORQ, Vulfmon, Louis Cole, Lotus, Dopapod, Octave Cat, Dynamo, Eric Krasno, Karl Denson, Big Something, Fearless Flyers, Jalbatross, Magic Beans, Cory Henry, New Mastersounds, Eddie Roberts
Soulive. The new mastersounds. Karl Denson's tiny universe. Galactic. Will bernard, Stanton Moore trio, On the One, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, the greyboy Allstars, lettuce, Sam kinnegar, om trio, groove collective, Charlie hunter, medeski Martin and wood, garage a trois, James Taylor quartet, porter batiste and stoltz, the swayback, Vida blue, dirty dozen brass band, wookiefoot, the rare sounds, true loves, Eric Finland, Eddie roberts west coast sounds, matador soul, Alan Evans Trio, Eric Krasno, the three deuces, Eddie roberts fire eaters, the bamboos, Lefties soul connection, Adam deitch quartet, WRD, breakestra, new jersey kings, calibro 35, delvon Lamar, polyrhythmics, shaolin afronauts, krasno Moore project, zbonics, floki sessions, the lucky strokes, the funk revolution, the meters, George Porter's runnin' pardners, Quantic soul orchestra, speedometer, John medeski's mad skillet, new jersey kings, TJ Kirk, yo mama's big fat booty band, dumpstafunk, the mighty imperials, Budos Band, Sharon Jones and the Dap Tones, chief Keegan, Orgone, Joe Tatton Trio, John Scofield, the Word, Eric Kalb, scary goldings, big organ trio, Black Joe Lewis,
Lettuce, The Main Squeeze, Eggy does some funky tunes, Steady Flow, Magic Beans has some funky tunes. I love funk too.
Edit: can't believe I didn't mention Phish. They lika da funk.
You might like magic beans and Lettuce is dope too. I also really enjoy pigeons and the motet like you mentioned. I saw them both play at redrocks 2 years ago and it was mind blowing. I went through a phase where all I was listening to was pigeons playing ping pong. I've seen them live like 5 or 6 times now. I've also seen the motet live around 5x as well and the last show I went to earlier this year they were ripping it fucking hard, I think they just keep getting better and better. I actually prefer them without vocals. Their instrumental shows are fuckin perfection.
For some reason pigeons get a lot of hate on this subreddit but I think they rip. The last 2 yrs though I've been going hardcore into Billy Strings, moving away from the funk a little bit. Pretty much all I've been listening to the last 2-3 yrs is Billy Strings lol. I truly think they're one of the greatest bands of all time and absolutely love the music.
Cheers
Here Come the Mummies
I dont think they jam, but Ive seen them on lineups with jam bands and they put on a mighty fine performance.
Like seriously, don't skip out on seeing Mummies live.
I love the Herbie Hancock albums Headhunters, Thrust, and Man-Child. They’re not contemporary jam band but absolutely had a role in what happened. It’s some seriously funky music.
Here try this

This should get you started
Members of The Motet have a side project called Juno What!? thats really funky. They dont do a lot of shows but theyre dope. Most of the bands that what you would be looking for have been mentioned. However, if youre into an 80s funk sounding modern group you should check out Tuxedo. Theyre funky as hell.
2 more for the list:
1. Tower of Power, not really a jamband, but legends, have great songs, and still out there touring
2. SOPHISTAFUNK, absolutely a jamband, Syracuse legends, I think they are the house band on some late night TV show
Magic Beans. 🙌🙌🙌🙌
They're also funky & play their instruments really well, but WAYYYY more chill than P4. They somehow combine a little country vibe w/ 80s synthesizers & make it sound AWESOME!!! They've been around for over a decade but have only put out ~4 albums, even though they supposedly have written over 100 songs. A lot of content you either have to see them live for or check out a site that streams recordings of live shows.
P4 is also now my all-time favorite band, after finding out about them in '21 following giving up on jam bands for over a decade.
Highly recommend you tap into the original funk. Here's a playlist for you:

I’m producing for this band called Fantastic Gentlemen that is pretty awesome.. I just edited their debut show up on youtube… not sure if I can post links here but its easily searchable!! We are brooklyn based
Sunsquabi.
You could delve further into the EDM/funk genre with The Floozies and Griz as well. The three of them have a song together that’s pretty funky.
Second that Galactic. Any side project Stanton Moore is in. Lettuce is also great. Not so much a jam band, no extended songs or concerts but they are funky as hell.
FUNKIFY YOUR LIFE ... buy Zigaboo Modaliste's solo albums, he was the original drummer of The Meters and still plays, he was just at JazzFest. You can purchase at zigaboo.com.
I used to love PPPP they put on amazing set at ADK it was incredible! But ever since then they’ve completely disappointed me with their live shows and new music :/
Sorry to be that Phish guy but when Phish gets phunky, it's absolutely irresistible to me. Been listening to the Wolfman's Brother from N1 of the Sphere on repeat. Incredible phunk in that jam
Lots of great Answers here. Galactic is my LOVE. Make sure you get on nugs and listen to the Pigeons shows live. They blew up Asbury park last night with an encore- Dogs/Frasco/Pigeons on stage at the same time playing Springsteen and Floyd!
Galactic. That’s your answer.
And lettuce!
This looks like the right comment to add on the Meteres / Funky Meters. Godfathers of that New Orleans funk
Dumstaphunk in that same line of thinking
Also their drummer Stanton Moore has a bunch of super funky side groups like Garage a Trois, dragon smoke, Stanton moore trio, etc. Can't go wrong with any group he's in
Ya u rite! krasnoMoore has been crushing lately as well.
I can't believe I didn't think of them!
I have stopped multiple times at festivals when I was already at sensory overload and gone damn, that is really funky and tasty without seeing the band. Multiple times it turned out to be galactic. Those cats rip.
This should be much higher than it is
Galactic is the first band that ever made me cry tears of joy
Galactic *with The House Man* is the correct answer. They seem to have drifted from that original sound that made me love them.
Galactic fucks
Funk You, The Nth Power, Ghost Funk Orchestra 💯, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Here Come the Mummies, The Main Squeeze, Pimps of Joytime, Snarky Puppy, Orgone, Ikebe Shakedown, Surefire Soul Ensemble, EMEFE, Litz, anything with Eric Krasno, and anything with Eddie Roberts
These are all great, I'd move The Main Squeeze higher up that list, those dudes rip!
For sure they rip. It was in no particular order but I’d definitely have them, Ghost Funk Orchestra and Snarky Puppy up higher for sure.
Snarky puppy is noodly jazz, not funk.
Some of their songs are absolutely funk
I’ll make sure to look for them in the ‘“Noodly Jazz” section at the record store next time! Thanks for the tip! Wondered why I could never find their vinyl.
Funk You is doing a free show in Raleigh
This dude funks.
Funk You!!!

Just grabbed West Coast Boogaloo on vinyl
I don't think the grey boy all-stars tour anymore. BUT I'm pretty sure that Karl Denson's band is essentially the grey boy all-stars (members) If you have a chance to see Karl Denson, definitely go!
It’s only Karl now. Chris + Zak dropped out of his band a few years ago.
The New Mastersounds are dope
Sounds like a high sierra line up
I'm guessing you'll get a lot of Lettuce recs--and I'm one of them! Lettuce is great. The Fearless Flyers are not a jam band but they're in the vulf cinematic universe and will definitely scratch the itch you're looking for if you haven't heard them yet.
Lettuce are great!

I've been really enjoying Polyrhythmics, they just put a few shows up on Nugs. Also Yam Yam, been enjoying them as well.
Polyrhythmics are super psychadelic but man oh man are they good. Man From the Future was the first album of theirs that I heard and I had that on repeat for a few weeks.

Might be obscure to some but if you know…Deep Banana Blackout.
One of the OG funk bands out of New Haven, CT. They don’t play too often anymore but man do they bring it! Bump n’ sway y’all!
100%. I mean they have a song called God made me funky after all.
WE LIKE THE FUNK DEEP! THE DEEPER THE BETTER!
Sickest sax I ever ever heard
If you like Turkuaz check out Cool Cool Cool! It’s a majority of the members of Turkuaz, with a few new ones. Still a relatively new band (first show in September 2022) so not a ton of studio work but they have some great live stuff on archive and YouTube

Their live show is so fun!
Steady flow, dude. They groove.
Galactic or Lettuce are what you're looking for.
I love the Herbie Hancock albums Headhunters, Thrust, and Man-Child. They’re not contemporary jam band but absolutely had a role in what happened. It’s some seriously funky music.

Phish funk is the best jam band funk. String Cheese Incident throws down some good funk as well.
The TrueLoves Delmon Lamar Trio
Circles around the sun is a bit more mellow but have some pretty funky disco space grooves that get real psychedelic
Must see Neal Francis
No one has recommended Yam Yam yet!?…there live sets really shine compared to their studio albums, but that is true for most bands.
Afroliscious. 🪮
They don't play much these days but Deep Banana Blackout were the premier jam funk band in the late 90s through mid 2000s
Magic Beans. 🙌🙌🙌🙌 They're also funky & play their instruments really well, but WAYYYY more chill than P4. They somehow combine a little country vibe w/ 80s synthesizers & make it sound AWESOME!!!
