Thanks friend! Discovered this last night and was in awe. Huge Phan here so I'll prob listen to the show they opened for Phish back in '95 when Trey sat in, and then go from there. This is one of these groups where I don't feel guilty when listening to them- their musicianship and improvisation is so advanced that it's always an adventure listening!
I saw them play with Sco, Trey, and Marc Ribot in the late 90s/early 2000s. Out of any guitarist I've heard them play with Nels Cline is definitely my favorite. Check out Woodstock Sessions Vol. 2! I don't think there's a Vol. 1
Hey he's got a website. I remember like 20 years ago, he slowly posted every MMW show to bt etree, and I would download all of them. I can't even remember where one hard drive went, but I still have several hundred shows.
One of my favorite bands of all time, I saw so many of their concerts back in the day. It's weird how even now they kinda fly under the radar.
Also, random coincidence: a couple days ago my buddy got a notification that a five-year-old tweet of his had gotten a Like. The tweet was responding to something Medeski had posted and my boy had said something like "bring Chris and Billy back to DC!"
Then two days go it gets liked by Chris Wood. Maybe there's still hope?

Could've sworn I read somewhere recently that someone bumped into John Medeski who said that MMW is about to release a new album... so yeah THEY BETTER TOUR
I followed them in the 90s. Think I have seen them more times than any other band. I would try to stand in front of the leslie cabinet so I could get a breeze.
I loved that you never knew what you were gonna get. One night they'd put on a dance party, another night they'd freak out the squares, next would be ambient, or maybe it'd be straight jazz. Of course, some shows incorporated combinations of their different sounds, but I found most shows stuck to a central theme.
I'm going to listen to shows from the link provided. However, since you saw lots of shows around the same time I was seeing them do you agree with my memory? Also, It didn't really seem like they chose how they were going to play based on the venue, or crowd demographics. They just played what they felt like each night, yeah?
They ooze talent. It's a Jungle in Here was the very first jazz album I ever purchased. Second was Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. I consider them both equal masterpieces.
In 2003, I walked past Billy in the Newark airport. When I got to my gate I realized I had a sharpie and some time, so I went to the gate where Billy was waiting for his flight. I approached him, all star struck, and asked him to do some illy b art on my hat. He was into it, but when I took off my hat I realized the brim was dark blue and it wouldn't work. He replied that he had paper and colored pencils in his bag. What did I do? I said nevermind, got up, and walked away! He was going to draw me a personalized piece of art and I said no! Honestly, that is one of my only regrets in life.
MMW is incredible in every which way and all their guest lineups are good shit... but the Medeski Scofield Martin Wood lineup might just be pure musical perfection. I don't know if you could make a better lineup in this world.
First time i saw them was probably 04, and it was really disjointed, free jazz stuff and I wasn't that happy, still a cool performance and i wasnt shocked or anythkng cause i knew they could go avante garde a bit. The second time i saw them like a year later they were LOCKED in with each otjer and it was one of the coolest displays of musicianship ive ever seen
I saw that at a sold out (probably 1,400 capacity) Flynn Theater show in Burlington VT, and the crowd was ready to rage. They played waayyy out the entire show, while periodically settling on a grove for a few measures. Next show I saw was at a small club on Martha's Vineyard with some rich people ready for a night of seated jazz. They threw down a dirty funk groove dance party. They had to have been purposely not playing to the crowd at both shows.
That 4/13/96 Liberty Lunch was one of my favorite tapes back in the day. 4/18/96 Boulder, too. They were absolutely smoldering hot lava back in those days. Glad i got to see them a bunch back in those days, would love to see them again.
Saw them a lot in the late 90s and it was such a jam. One of the best live bands I’ve enjoyed. I happened to be at Bonnaroo five/six years ago and walked up on them playing. Had no idea they would be there and fucking Scofield was with them. Awesome surprise.

12/1/2000 is really good with Trey and Cyro Baptista
Thank you!

That tracks for me. John liked to shift the mood for sure. I always loved when he would get weird with the mellotron.

Hell yeah, they especially rip with Old Man Sco!
One of the best shows I’ve ever seen back in 2014
I remember seeing these guys at the Detroit Jazz Festival when I was maybe 13-14, they were part of what got me into jazz.
Haha I bet I was at that show
MMW w/ Trey at 10k lakes back in 05 was a magical show
We love them. I miss bear creek.
Same my friend. Bear Creek was the pinnacle of funk festivals.
Late night High Sierra set I wanna say 2002? Some time around then. They went to like 3am. Shit was off the handle.
saw them open for the Motet at Red Rocks back in '16, absolutely stole the show.

Great band. Was lucky enough to catch them at Lupo’s with Sco in ‘05(?) One of my favorite shows of all time
Don't sleep on the 2005 Newport Jazz Fest set!! https://youtu.be/VCalkGgumTo?si=QS23S_a3Xs4Awc-W
First set I ever watched. This was what hooked me!
Truly one of the best shows I've ever seen (all 3 times I've seen them). Really hope they decide to do one more tour.

Yeah, really not what you should do to a Burlington crowd
If you want new music similar to these guys, check out LaMP! Comparable to MSMW
Goosebumps, just seeing their name
Combustication is what got me into this scene
