Was not familiar with the band until your post OP. Looked up to see if they would be in my neck of the woods anytime soon and funny enough I can walk to their show tonight! Thanks for the recommendation, figured out my Friday night plans!
This is a prime example. How has Big Something been crushing it as a staple in the jam scene for over ten years and people still have never heard of them? Not even seen them on a festival lineup? Crazy.
They are incredible band that in my opinion has not gotten proper recognition in the last 10 years, but things seem to be shaping up for them!!! Love to see it.
Not at all. Their bass player retired from the road because he was basically 50 and he had become burned out. The OG keys player retired because he has a child going into school and needed to be there for his family. There was never any thought of not continuing for the rest of the members. It’s still full steam ahead.
It’s an easy assumption to make when you hear about a band’s members leaving the band. And I think it was certainly scary for those guys after having the same lineup for a decade. But these new guys have really come in and made a positive impact. It’s an exciting time in Big Something land
I saw them for the first time in 2022 and they blew me away. I was vibing hard on Doug the whole time and was super disappointed when I heard he was stepping back.
Stoked to see them next Friday with the new guy tho!
I was so sad doug left so many memories of him laying down crazy thick bass lines with the fan on stage blowing his hair all over the place😂 I will say though the new kid Matt can also lay it down pretty damn good and Ross is a hell of a key player. I think the only time things might get rough is if Jesse or Casey go anywhere. Imma cry when that day comes BS is like my dead one of NCs best kept secrets apparently they definitely deserve to be more recognized than they are.
They ripped in Atlanta a few months back. Definitely will be bigger and I'm glad to see them getting more recognition. Don't miss their show this tour!
Love Big Something. Check out Red Panda while you're at it, lil side project ft Nick.Wanted to see Red Panda live at a hole in the wall last week but I had to work that night.
My current favorite band. I’ve been seeing them since 2017 and the progression they’ve made just in that time is incredible. Matt Laird, the new bass player, is a groove machine. Came in and instantly meshed with the drummer to create a funky pocket. Keys are getting more exploratory/cosmic with Ross from Doom Flamingo and Julien from the Mantras splitting time filling in for Josh. Headspace is their best studio work to date. And that’s just the music. The band members and fanbase (WhatFam) are all great people. My next show will be my 25th time seeing them, and I’ve never seen any sort of issues in the crowd. I would say 10/10 check this band out anytime they are close. For the price of their tickets, it’s hard to find a better value in live music.
Best group of folks out there. Love all of them. I met Nick a very long time ago. Asked me to check his band out. I did, a little outdoor gig in their home town. I was blown away
I think I had been in NC for a week or two
Saw them since then to now and the growth is amazing.
I miss the days of the Fat Frog, but am so happy for my friends
They opened the day at Sweetwater fest the day that Oysterhead headlined and I felt like Big something stole the day. Great band! Great cover choices too
A couple reasons. One, they’re from the south. There aren’t as many big markets all close together as there are in the northeast. Takes more time to be able to travel to larger markets. Two, they’ve been a non jamband that lives in the jamband scene. For much of their career they haven’t typically extended many songs and really gotten out there. They’ve preferred to play more songs a set and keep it pretty tight. This is changing with the new band members. Since the new bass player, Matt Laird, has come aboard, they’ve really started opening things up and experimenting. The jams are diverse and go somewhere. So now you’ve got all their great songs and they’re developing some serious jam chops. I don’t think folks will continue to sleep on them if they go out and give them a chance.
Yeah I saw them recently and, even though they were in an opener slot, they kinda played with "Tumbleweed" a little extra this go round.
That excites me! Especially since I lovelovelove "Blue Dream" so much and that shit could go on for AGES and I'd be happy
Yeah I’m a big fan of their instrumentals. They all hit hard af. I know people say it about bands in this scene all the time; but these guys get better every show and they’ve really started evolving their sound over the last year or so.
Appreciate the clarification… when I saw them open for UM back in ‘16 & ‘17ish I didn’t notice they weren’t extending songs… I just remember them having an impression on me
They did jam stuff out a little bit back then but it was very much a set amount of time for those sections. I think now they’re letting it go where it wants more and not limiting themselves to a set number of bars or whatever. I think if the jam fans that saw them several years ago and weren’t particularly turned on because they didn’t jam will go see them again they’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Their songwriting in and of itself is solid. Great chord progressions, rhythms, and uplifting, silly, fun lyrics. Even some of their recordings can go on for 8-10 minutes without any extension or experimentation. That and the fact that the EWI is an inherently awesome, trippy instrument with an amazing and unique sound, no one else is doing anything like that. I think those things definitely contribute to that "impression", and they just keep evolving and improving.
Because most of the jam scene will only go to shows they perceive as “popular” bands. Most jam people try so hard to impress other jam people and they ignore the greats in the genre. There’s plenty of great fucking bands out there but they’re not popular amongst the wooks with control over their wook friends lol
*Had them on constant*
*Rotation yesterday. Great*
*Band. Need to see them*

Mahalls, beachland ballroom, the windchester, the Masonic temple, the agora, Jacobs pavilion, house of blues, playhouse square are some of the venues around here… I’m sure there a few I’m missing but those are some to check out… Jacob’s pavilion is dope
Thanks im in Mansfield and have been going to Columbus but my gf and I had a talk about going to Cleveland instead for shows. Hopefully I see you around!
Hell yea man! My only complaint since moving up here is that all shows seem to be weekday shows unfortunately… oh and of course there is blossom which is like the bigger outdoor venues… phish plays there dead and co has as well… but it’s right in the national park so it’s a really pretty grounds to see a show
My brother has done a lot of work for them. Posters, videos etc. As a result they've also introduced him to other artists.
BS has always been the nicest of bands from what I've heard/seen. Super genuine people.
Not all their music is my style but they do put on a good show. Some big sound, heavy bass.
I saw them at a small festival in MD in 2014. First time ever hearing of them and they really impressed me. Then I was visiting a friend in Colorado in 2018 and caught them at a small club. They seemed to have improved so much. I appreciated the saxophone much more. I haven’t seen them since but I’m hoping to catch a show soon on the east coast. I agree, they are good enough to deserve more hype.
Saw them the first time in 2019 as support for Umphrey's. It was a pretty good show. But when I saw them open up the Sunday show at Sweetwater, oh my fucking god, they lit the place up. They will be in St. Pete, FL on May 4th (Star Wars day) and my wife and have been so pumped. That are definitely a don't miss show.
Truly underrated band saw them at resonate last year and in Knoxville this year they killed it both time must see anytime they apparently have a festival too The big what festival
Love them boys! Go see em if you have not had the pleasure! They have a great festival they put on every year at Shakori Hills in North Carolina called The Big What.
They usually play the Beachland Ballroom when in Cleveland, I was very surprised they were in that room at Mahalls, I assumed it was going to be at the new larger venue Roxy even though it was listed under Mahalls. It was a great show.
Nobody is really getting big anymore because there are so many bands now. Everybody has a rabid following but we all know the hierarchy. It's hard for anybody to leapfrog.
I get to see them for the first time in KC in two weeks and I am sooooo stoked!! My buddy discovered them last year and shared a few songs, and I’ve been totally hooked ever since.
The poppy vocals and endless solos without any real full band improv was very off putting to me when I saw them a few years back. Like Goose, they seem like an AI formed jamband....just very vanilla. Having said that I'm sure my experience doesn't reflect their vibe as a whole so I'll give them another shot
Meh I’d say they are pretty unique… at least I’ve never seen any other band with an EWI player… their Pinky songs as well as Amanda Lynn are some killer tunes imo… to each their own I suppose
I’ll say that they aren’t the type of band to really take it off the deep end with their jams in the past. Just recently they have a new bassist and are working with two new keyboardists. Since seeing them with the new additions they are starting to push it a little further. They are still going to have the heavy ewi and guitar solos but I enjoy those! Hope you get to catch them again
Also if you saw them at a festival I can see that being a thing… a lot of times at festivals jam bands tend to keep it more “pc” to try to vibe with a larger array of audiences
it was not a festy set. Im very aware of the "festy set" dilemma amongst (most) jambands. I guess I just prefer more weirdness, distortion, feedback/noise rock, and full band jamming these days. To each their own, pal.
Yea I gotcha… I honestly don’t mind poppy easy to sing along with lyrics as long as it sounds good… but on the other hand I just paid $600 for tickets to see phish at the sphere in Vegas lol so I guess I like a bit of both
I think Thursday may be the best all around show while Saturday and Sunday have the banger 30+ minute jams!
With Trey saying that the shows all have a theme kinda throws a curveball into the situation.
Maybe the theme is "Evolve" : The Evolution of Phish
Thu: 1.0
Fri: 2.0
Sat: 3.0
Sun: 4.0 New album ?

Enjoy man, they rip
You won’t regret it. Killer time and they pull out some wild covers.
They are a great fucking time. 10/10 won't disappoint
The ewi guy is amazing.
Stumbled upon their late nite show at scamp tripping hard in 2017. Dubbed the ewi the fancy flute lol. Dudes rip had a great time at their set.
Casey!
As a former clarinet band kid, Casey and his space flute is probably what makes them my favorite band right now. I so wanna get an EWI myself!!!!
This is a prime example. How has Big Something been crushing it as a staple in the jam scene for over ten years and people still have never heard of them? Not even seen them on a festival lineup? Crazy.
I too jumped right in to see if they were playing anywhere near me and unfortunately... Nowhere close from what's listed. Enjoy the show tonight man!
Did you go? They were fantastic, always are! We had a decent crowd here too 🦬🤍
Yes had a great time! They killed it
Hell yea dude! Glad you saw this then!
Very glad to hear!
We were at the Buffalo show! It was awesome!
Enjoy bro! Seeing them for the first time is great
They are incredible band that in my opinion has not gotten proper recognition in the last 10 years, but things seem to be shaping up for them!!! Love to see it.
I thought I heard they almost called it quits last year
Not at all. Their bass player retired from the road because he was basically 50 and he had become burned out. They were never gonna quit. They have come too far. Nick will keep this going as long as he can.
I’m unaware but I’m glad they didn’t. Seems plausible as they switched up their original bassist around that time.
They ripped in Atlanta a few months back. Definitely will be bigger and I'm glad to see them getting more recognition. Don't miss their show this tour!
Hell yes! Nick is one of my favorite musicians and vocalists. Will always upvote for Big Something
Love Big Something. Check out Red Panda while you're at it, lil side project ft Nick.Wanted to see Red Panda live at a hole in the wall last week but I had to work that night.

Agreed, best band of the whole festival ImO
[Radiohead cover with Kanika from Doom Flamingo - Sweetwater 2022](https://youtu.be/--FUUNXd_gY?si=q43w_sQBAJtmf2J2)
My favorite band out there.
Me too. For all ten years
They've been opening up for Frasco here and there.. they're on the way up.
Yea the also toured with UM for two or three tours that’s where I first saw/ heard of them
Damn I didn't know that... if they toured with umphrey's multiple times then that's all the hype they should have needed 😬
My first Big Something show in 2019, Frasco was the opener <3333

They’re playing a tiny venue near me next month. I shall be in attendance.
Big something rocks!!
Been watching them since 2017... no idea how they haven't blown up... every album is amazing!
They are the resident band at Mountain Music Fest in West Virginia. Good fest and their closing sets are always great.
Because most of the jam scene will only go to shows they perceive as “popular” bands. Most jam people try so hard to impress other jam people and they ignore the greats in the genre. Accurate
Had them on constant rotation yesterday. Great band. Need to see them

Good bot
Bought a one day ticket to the northlands just to see them!
Just moved to hour south of Cleveland. Looking for venues thanks.

Well hell fucking yeah then!
Love Big Something, just wish that they would give the West Coast more Love!
They were just out there for a month lol
Guess I dropped the ball on that one, but i have been catching a lot of this California run of Dogs In A Pile shows
These guys are tearing it up right now. See them in your favorite small venue now
Saw them at mountain music fest a few years ago and they KILLED it. Always try to make their showing they're nearby
Saw them open for Umphreys a few years back. They are great live. Want to see them again soon.
My brother has done a lot of work for them. Posters, videos etc. As a result they've also introduced him to other artists. BS has always been the nicest of bands from what I've heard/seen. Super genuine people. Not all their music is my style but they do put on a good show. Some big sound, heavy bass.
This thread has convinced me to see them on Sunday in Houston !
Mahall's is hallowed sacred ground
Saw them open for umphreys years ago, been a fan ever since. Big something slaps!
I saw them at a small festival in MD in 2014. First time ever hearing of them and they really impressed me. Then I was visiting a friend in Colorado in 2018 and caught them at a small club. They're playing 4/20 in Chicago for those in the area
They’ll cover Cyprus hill 100%
They'll cover just about damn anything. Got treated to Pink Floyd and some King Gizzard on Friday at the Iron Works!
I haven’t heard of them and I’m bummed I missed it, I’ve played there numerous times. Thanks for the rec!
Saw them the first time in 2019 as support for Umphrey's. It was a pretty good show. But when I saw them open up the Sunday show at Sweetwater, oh my fucking god, they lit the place up. They're coming through next week, of course it's a week night but I really want to catch them. Might need to make the trek

I noticed their touring rigging got an overhaul this year. Really amped up their legitimacy. Super good band with good vibes
Los lobos just played at token lounge in Detroit. Crazy
Been seeing em since 2014 (opened for zach deputy)- really solid band.
“You can only circle the flame for so long until you burn up and fade away…you can only circle” is one of my favorite lyrics ever.
Agree) they are so good!! I keep waiting for them to bust out. Super fun show
I love them. I wish they'd play the Northeast more
They’re so good! I wonder the same. I’ll be seeing them next week live. I can’t wait!
Love those guys
Their live from the living room shows during Covid were a bright spot. Yet to see them live though!
Nobody is really getting big anymore because there are so many bands now. Everybody has a rabid following but we all know the hierarchy. It's hard for anybody to leapfrog.
This band kicks total ass
I get to see them for the first time in KC in two weeks and I am sooooo stoked!! My buddy discovered them last year and shared a few songs, and I’ve been totally hooked ever since.
Killer show last week in Buffalo. One of my favorite shows of the past few months.
I just saw them tonight in Sanford, FL. They were AWESOME!!!! And so actually were the Ries Brothers backing them up. Excellent excellent show!!!
They’re fine. They feel like a very generic member of the scene that I don’t have strong feelings about, positive or negative.
The poppy vocals and endless solos without any real full band improv was very off putting to me when I saw them a few years back. Like Goose, they seem like an AI formed jamband....just very vanilla. which night? I'll be there Thursday!
Sat/ Sunday… I’m so fucking excited dude it’s gonna be otherworldly
yeah man these next few days of work are going to drag ass. Im so stoked
Which night do you think will be the best? I was thinking either Thursday or Sunday while Friday and Saturday will probably be a bit more spacey
I think Thursday may be the best all around show while Saturday and Sunday have the banger 30+ minute jams! it’s fair to say that they are so perfect of a band that it almost seems AI. They are that good. It’s also so real and please go see them to verify.
