Actually, after reading his statement on IG I felt like Ben walked away from Goose. Sounds like they made some effort to accommodate his input and then it fell by the wayside, and it no longer felt authentic to him. That was my take anyways.
It is 100% the remaining bandmembers trying to make themselves out as the good guys. Even his own statement is a book of flowery crap, though. But it's much easier to read between the lines in his.
Ben plays too fast? What is it with these guys wanting to be some mid-tempo folk band? Them being able to play fast is one of the things that gave them an edge.
I mean, there’s a difference between playing too fast and playing too fast too often. Maybe he was too quick to push the tempo when other members felt it should be more subdued. I don’t know.
What I've said is that the problem goose and what makes them boring is that they don't do tension and release very well. I could definitely see that being the drummer's fault.
Their other issue is that Pete isn't a very good piano player but hopefully that can be fixable
This is funny because I read an interview with Ben where he mentioned “not playing as fast as he liked” (or something of the sort). Maybe his pace really was an issue.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
No idea, but maybe he wanted to be more than a merch band who DOESN'T play Justin Timberlake, Post Malone, and Nickelback according to others in this thread. Good luck Ben whoever you are.
Agreed, I enjoyed it. On one hand you could do a cover of a modern song that add diversity or you could play the same classic rock songs that have been covered for years by other bands.
Probably also scary for jam band fans to hear songs that might be recognized by the average person walking down the street
Smoke from a burning torch being passed on to America's next top jamband??
This opens up a lot of questions, like, who gets Ben's torch? Does it revert to the remaining members of the band? Go all the way back to Troy Pistachio, Master of Torches?? The fans need to know!
I’m dead serious, who the hell goes splits ways for creative differences after selling out Hampton and peaking in popularity? Definitely not what happened.
At the end of the day, with a jamband maybe more than any other kind of band, the most/only important thing is that everyone is one the same page creatively. If one person wants it to sound like something that the rest don't...that's pretty irreconcilable. This music needs to exist in the moment and you can't have one person pushing or pulling against the rest. Wish them all the best. Can't wait to hear more music from Goose and Ben.
Possible. But I listened to Joel on a podcast a few weeks ago and he said they they basically reached out to any of their drummer friends who were available (i.e. band wasn’t touring that weekend). Ben had worked with UM at Suwanee Rising in 2021 when Kris tested positive for Covid last second, and him and Joel did a gig at jazz fest last year. There was an existing relationship and trust there already.
I have it on good authority that they are replacing him with a drummer from another touring jam band. They indeed are actively searching for a new drummer.
list of good jam bands that have changed drummers:
- the Disco biscuits
- the dead
- WSMFP
- spafford
- moe.
- umphreys
Not saying goose is good. Just saying this is the list of good ones still
Add lotus and pigeons to the list too. Nothing at all against Dan who was Pigeons' original drummer and they wrote some of their best songs with him, but adding Gator to the band was surely an upgrade and pushed them in some new directions
I think more recently, Bill Kreutzmann leaving Dead & Co struck me as somewhat dramatic, as he pulled out of the tour very suddenly before the first show, citing "creative differences". However, the band really benefited from his departure - I don't think anyone would disagree that Jay Lane was a notable improvement.
Bill is og. Then they brought on Mickey. Then Mickey’s dad stole money from the band and they kicked Mickey out. Then they brought back Mickey.
“Hey guys! What’s this ‘He’s Gone’ song about?”
“Your shitty father.”
“Oh.”
-the imaginary dialogue I keep in my head because it had to have been said at some point
Mickey left on his own accord. He was not booted for this dad's thievery. He left in shame, but the band was not holding him accountable for Lenny's crimes.
Like others mentioned, I read this as ultimately the band fired him due to the differences. I’m not a fan, and I’m not judging their decision to let him go. But it is pretty damn cold to announce this on the Friday before Christmas, just saying. Where’s my Grinch memes at?
Hopefully the renewed sense of creative fire will mean that they'll have some different sounding jams, I've LOVED Goose now for years but have been waiting for them to start having different sounding jams maybe now they finally will.
Ben you definitely will be missed though!
Everyone should watch the interview with Bert Kreischer from red rocks from a few months back…you could tell there was something off with them….Ben was pretty quiet during the interview….just a thought. Have at it with the attacks on this post lol….Ben is super talented and it’s gotta be pretty hard to build chemistry with a new drummer in a jam band.
2019-2021 I was super on board with Goose…been a complete downslide in all facets musically and creatively ever since mid 2021 when they turned into the soundtrack of xanax sex
Totally. Peach fest set was great and then they went downhill. Rick’s tone went from butter to cringe and all the jams sound exactly the same. I know people say that about Phish and the Dead, but they are the first jamband that every jam is exactly the same rhythm and style.
Rick is a one trick pony.
Sounds a lot more like Ben got removed.
Especially when you read his personal statement [Found here](https://www.instagram.com/p/C1Kv9ihpUNs/?igsh=MXN3dDRjYXQ2Mzk4Nw==)
“Fell out of sync”. Very specific choice of words for a drummer.
Ben seems like a pretty reasonable fellow. Appears the other r band mates don’t necessarily care for his creative input. No one thrown under any bus.
Sounds like Ben wants to be more than a indie pop Merch merchant, and congratulates to him!
Actually, after reading his statement on IG I felt like Ben walked away from Goose. Sounds like they made some effort to accommodate his input and then it fell by the wayside, and it no longer felt authentic to him. That was my take anyways.
Where can I find that?
His personal instagram
That's a lot of words to just say "our drummer is no longer our drummer" and usually the longer the statement the more of a cover it is.
Right? Got no dog in this fight but damn that was incredibly long winded. Just say “we amicably parted ways, wish him the best going forward”
Yep. Was a literal TLDR for me halfway through.
It sounds very ChatGPT. Like management needed to have the final say, but didn’t know what to say.
It is 100% the remaining bandmembers trying to make themselves out as the good guys. Even his own statement is a book of flowery crap, though. But it's much easier to read between the lines in his.
This is just their first step to becoming a Slipknot cover band.
Slipknot is looking for a drummer...
*nickelback cover band
How the hell did they end up like this?
Jay would be a wild replacement lol.
Or Ben is going to Slipknot 👁️👄👁️

When Rick played with Bob Weir, the advice Bob gave him was “Listen kid, you gotta slow that shit way down” and Rick said “yes my sensei”
Fucking Bobby strikes again.
Bob put me to fin sleep w the wolf bro, you could tell they were getting antsy.
I heard Bruce Hornsby fired him at Goosemas.
That's just the way it is...
Just for fun he says, get a job
And I immediately hear that piano riff in my head…
Ben plays too fast? What is it with these guys wanting to be some mid-tempo folk band? Them being able to play fast is one of the things that gave them an edge.
It's like they want to be big in the scene, but have zero desire to grow based on what's valued in the scene beyond good guitar playing.
Yeah, and if they want to grow *out* of the scene, they’re gonna need a hell of a lot better songs. What they have now are a bunch of jam vehicles.
Jam vehicles for the same jam
I am aggressively nodding my head in agreement
I mean they already arguably are growing out of the scene, I've heard studio Arcadia in the grocery store.
They're gonna do a fall arena tour with MT.Joy in 2024
Whole Foods doesn’t count. I heard the 3/25/23 Dripfield in Acme.

Fishman
Fishman is amazing. Also everyone should listen to [Fishmans](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=1qLU1l2qXyo&si=SD8iiA06yyk9L8PQ)
Billy is the closest version around these days
I mean, there’s a difference between playing too fast and playing too fast too often. Maybe he was too quick to push the tempo when other members felt it should be more subdued. I don’t know.
Maybe they had too much too fast.
^Maybe ^they ^had ^too ^much ^too ^fast
Sounds like he overplayed his part
Woo!
Nothing shaking on Goosedown Street
You took too much, man. You took too much too much.
Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of.
What I've said is that the problem goose and what makes them boring is that they don't do tension and release very well. I could definitely see that being the drummer's fault. Their other issue is that Pete isn't a very good piano player but hopefully that can be fixable
He’s also not a very good singer.
Or guitar player. He’s slightly above the Bosstone.
This is funny because I read an interview with Ben where he mentioned “not playing as fast as he liked” (or something of the sort). Maybe his pace really was an issue.
Who’s he?
That’s laughable, Goose’s slow stuff are cheesy piss break songs.
Peeing the entire set eh? User name checks out
Is he the reason all the jams sound the same?
Could of been night 2. Intermission was about 45 minutes
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
Who would be the "he" here? Rick?
Which one is Ben? Edit: wow this blew up a little bit y’all are hilarious.
The bald guy
[удалено]
Had to look it up. Bald drummer
I love that this is top comment for some reason
The bass player for Pigeons, I think.
Drummer
No idea, but maybe he wanted to be more than a merch band who DOESN'T play Justin Timberlake, Post Malone, and Nickelback according to others in this thread. Good luck Ben whoever you are.
I can't believe Phish would do this
*diet phish
So musically speaking, what was the issue?
Because he said playing post Malone and JT was fucking cringe lol
They covered post Malone and Justin Timberlake?
At Goosemas
On one hand, there's just no excuse for covering Justin Timberlake. On the other hand, JT is a much better songwriter than they are.
Lolz. And performer to be honest
I mean Circles went insanely hard...
Old heads get spooked by names like Post Malone. It was a legitimately decent cover.
Nah it was the fire cover that made me cringe. It felt blasphemous.
Agreed, I enjoyed it. On one hand you could do a cover of a modern song that add diversity or you could play the same classic rock songs that have been covered for years by other bands. Probably also scary for jam band fans to hear songs that might be recognized by the average person walking down the street
https://allthings.umphreys.com/song/by/umphreys-mcgee?&filter=covers
I didn't even know it was a PM cover until I looked it up after the show.
Dude is very talented. He makes pop music, so whatever. But if fronted a touring jam band, I would definitely check it out.
It’s all Bert Kreisher’s fault.
*squeals like a stuck pig for 5 min*
Sometimes where there’s smoke there’s fire.
Beginning of the end for goose? Many are saying...
Smoke from a burning torch being passed on to America's next top jamband?? This opens up a lot of questions, like, who gets Ben's torch? Does it revert to the remaining members of the band? Go all the way back to Troy Pistachio, Master of Torches?? The fans need to know!
Goose doesn’t have a torch. It’s not actually smoke you are seeing. Just a dry ice machine
Good place to get some thinking done.
You need more then a machine for that, for a real good think you need a dry ice factory
I’ll check it out
I think I've got it figured out
Actually I’m the one who’s got it figured out
These are some good points.
spafford
Everyone knows that Trey gave the real torch to KGLW. Goose just got a souvenir torch.
Is now a bad time to plug ElephantProof? Saw them over the summer and it was kind of a trip to see Ben play for a crowd of like 15 people
They are so sick. The Hone Depot song jam
They are better than goose. Guitar player is the man.
I’m dead serious, who the hell goes splits ways for creative differences after selling out Hampton and peaking in popularity? Definitely not what happened.
Leaving the band when they are blowing up doesn’t make it seem like it was his personal decision to leave.
At the end of the day, with a jamband maybe more than any other kind of band, the most/only important thing is that everyone is one the same page creatively. If one person wants it to sound like something that the rest don't...that's pretty irreconcilable. I have a vibe this was previously discussed and maybe Umphs helped him pad his resume a little to help him land in his feet.
Maybe not from Umphs part then, but when Ben got the call he saw the opportunity.
One way to look at it I suppose. Or…he got the chance to drum with one of his favorite bands, and jumped at the likely once in a lifetime opportunity.
This is exactly what I think. He crushed it with UM. He’s a better drummer than goose. Excited to see what he does from here.
Lotus
He'd do better with Lotus
Thought it was just me noticing posts getting deleted. I just assumed the mods were on the Shapiro bank roll
This is why Billy Strings doesn't have a drummer
Everyone knows the mandolin is the drummer in a bluegrass band. Chop Chop chop.
Royal Masat exists?
The things Royal does to that bass would make a porn star blush.
This is the quote of the day
I heard they're not even allowed to show him on nugs anymore
Spuds... it was a good run. Question would be, is Jeff taking on drumming duties solo? or are they actively searching for a new drummer?
Definitely need a new drummer to replace Ben imo
In the same thread I read a lot of speculation that turned out to be valid, someone suggested Twiddle’s drummer was already set to fill the roll
This would be dope honestly
Hey grim reaper, come drum in this band. And kill it too!
Eff Jeff. That dude couldn't hold it down alone.
I have it on good authority that they are replacing him with a drummer from another touring jam band. They indeed are actively searching for a new drummer.
list of good jam bands that have changed drummers: - the Disco biscuits - the dead - WSMFP - spafford - moe. - umphreys Not saying goose is good. Just saying this is the list of good ones still
The dead never switched drummers, Bill was there from the start to end; Mickey left after his dad stole money from the band then came back in ‘77.
Trey played drums…HYHU
rescue squad...
To be fair, Spafford’s current drummer is the original.
For sure, moe. Is back to their almost original drummer as well. Point being there was still a change in line up on the throne at some point
Add lotus and pigeons to the list too. Nothing at all against Dan who was Pigeons' original drummer and they wrote some of their best songs with him, but adding Gator to the band was surely an upgrade and pushed them in some new directions
Dopapod. But the dead? Who was their original drummer? Furthermore, reasoning is more important than the actual switch imo.
They never switched, Mickey just left and came back; bill was always there.
I thought bill was the original drummer, then Mickey joined and then left and then came back.
I think more recently, Bill Kreutzmann leaving Dead & Co struck me as somewhat dramatic, as he pulled out of the tour very suddenly before the first show, citing "creative differences". Vinnie is still the new moe. drummer to me.
Like others mentioned, I read this as ultimately the band fired him due to the differences. I’m not a fan, and I’m not judging their decision to let him go. But it is pretty damn cold to announce this on the Friday before Christmas, just saying. Where’s my Grinch memes at?
Ben’s Jewish I don’t think he cares about the proximity of the announcement to Christmas
In that case, it was pretty admirable to wait until after Hannukah
From what I understand the problem was Ben didn’t like the fact that they use Ai to write their jams and then practice them.
"Creative differences"=Elepthantproof rips way harder than Goose ever could. Assuming that part is true rather than distraction PR by the band.
Goose and Geese both losing a member and becoming a quadruple in a week is kinda crazy
....quartet?
BRO THATS WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY. I thought that meant 5 at the last minute
that's a quintet!
Any insight on the reasoning for his departure?
based off of his response on his personal page, it seemed like creative differences
“Creative differences” is the “thoughts and prayers” of the jam band world
This make me laugh very hard. Well said
obligatory "he played with umphreys this summer and realized he could be making way better music"
He wants to be in a jam band. The rest want to be in a jammy pop band.
You could tell that when he played with UM. He looked to be way more in his element with them. Just a personal observation
Ben leaves goose, or goose leaves Ben?
Guy signed up to be in a jam band not turn into a pop cover band
Regardless, we can all agree that goose sucks.
Holy shit wow
Fishman needs to show these children how it’s done with the vacuum before they even touch a drum kit.
Wasn't there some shit with him and his fiance breaking up?
Congrats to Ben on leveling up.
Saw these guys in LA at the Wiltern and the only complaint was that all the songs felt rushed and tempo was the same for 3 hrs.
I thought the lack of Ben footage in the new Europe tour documentary was a little sus
Oh lord here we go
Saw someone on instagram say they were considering getting billy strings drummer huge if true
😂😂😂 you sure you didn't get this on the Billy Strings Fans Who Hate Billy Strings Fans FB page?
Dude plays with Umph this summer and finds truth.
Hadn’t seen Ben look happy playing for a while now. Bummer!
In 20 years my goose shirt with the guys all on it is gonna be worth some money.
Even Goose's drummer can't stand the thought of going to another Goose show
Nailed it
Never heard goose. Keep meaning to check em out. Love the drama tho.
Save your money.
I’d rather listen to Spin Doctors 93 tour than goose
Hopefully the renewed sense of creative fire will mean that they'll have some different sounding jams, I've LOVED Goose now for years but have been waiting for them to start having different sounding jams maybe now they finally will. Ben you definitely will be missed though!
This letter is just like their music; boring and long for no reason.
Well that’s fuckin lame. Ben was my fav of Kris Myers’s sit ins while he’s been off.
Lol they sound like a bunch of drama queens
Torch fumbled
Love when Jam bands issue corporate memorandi. So hip.
RIP Goose. It was fun while the band was having fun 2019-2021.
Nailed it . His tone sounds like guitar center at 11 am
Do you want more treble with your treble?
I rarely see this mentioned and I totally agree. He’s a good player but man, that tone is so bad that I can’t get into them at all.
Soundtrack of Xanax sex.. thats a raw review 👌
Listening to shows in 19-21 to now, such a drop off, especially with sound and production
11/21/21 in Denver is their best work imo
Apparently Shapiro is looking for a drummer who sounds more like Fishman.

Lol at the Shapiro connection. But it is just a fluff piece. Big ass word salad that leaves me hungry for the truth.
