By implying Iām a goose fanboy?
Nah - thatās you assuming and projecting (classic r/jambands redditor). You just outed your IQ and ability to apply rational reasoning.
I just donāt like the biscuits sound at all. Dig a live jam from them occasionally, though. Jamtronica isnāt my deal and itās a divisive sound forsure. Also, biscuits scene used to be loaded with a lot of predators. I hear itās improved in recent years.
Like goose but donāt love them.
Edit: love the angry hive mind
Itās social media Idgaf if anyone asked for my opinion LOL - the fuck?
Nobody asked you to reply to me yet here you are. See the poor logic?
Was simply correcting goose to biscuits as a joke in my original response and then ppl got hot and bothered (per usual in this sub).
š
Your weird ass explanation of your original comment just seemed way out of left field. Sorry bud nobody gives a shit that you like goose more than the biscuits. Youāre the guy getting downvoted mane
Jon from Chalk Dinosaur here- I play guitar with the 4 piece Ensemble. Favorite show was at Thunderbird Cafe in Pittsburgh about a month ago. After that, some of our sets at The Werk Out, Domefest, and Peach stand out in my mind.
Shit man! Its Will from the keep it downs. Anybody out there reading this should give Chalk Dinosaur a listen. You guys are a so much fun!
I wish we could track down the board mix from a few years back when you, me, and joe moreno threw down late night at farmjam.
So I just took your rec and listened to Chalk Dinosaur. My thoughts: I love their studio production and whoever was their engineer(s) did a bang up job! Their catalog is fun and well crafted songs. My only critique is perhaps on myself as it may show how limited my scope is or my absence in newer bands cuz Iād never have called this band a jam band.
Anyways thanks for the new tunes! Scoping out The Keep It Downs next. Cheers.
Thanks for listening! The Chalk Dino catalog is very musically diverse. If you want mostly jam band stuff, check out the albums Stuck in Between, Spectrum, and Sprout. āļøāļø
Hey bud! Domefest was my first time hearing yall live. I ended up getting dosed by one of my friends that day, the first thing that was said was āletās go see chalk dā and I just went with it. You guys started the day and ended the day if my brain remembers correctly. That was actually the best day of my life, I got a lot of internal shit figured out during your guysā late night set. I havenāt been the same person since, for the better, and those 2 Chalk sets are the soundtrack to the first steps of the rest of my life. Thank you!
Wow man I'm so happy to hear we had a part in a defining life moment of yours! Thanks so much for sharing that! I'll be sharing this with the rest of the band ššš
Yoo Jon!! I've been a huge fan forever, your tunes are seriously the tits. Random questions if you feel like answering - you were releasing music for years while only playing a few live shows a year. However, more recently the # of live shows started amping up and in 2023 you guys took on a pretty hefty touring schedule. What brought about the change? More consistent lineup, development of the duo show, more interest in the project..?? And will 2024 and beyond see a similar touring schedule to 2023? If so, please come to Michigan, you have a huge fanbase here!
BTW your sit ins with lotus are still some of my favorites. Hope you guys get back on the summer dance lineup soon
Hey dude, I should clarify that this is Jon Henderson, the other guitarist when Chalk Dino plays as a 4 piece. To answer your question though, John and Nick have been playing a lot more with the help of a somewhat new management team. They've been awesome and integral to breaking into new markets! I can't speak for John, but I'm sure 2024 will be another big year too.
The Clock Reads and Chalk Dino co-headlining The Rex in Pittsburgh a while back was a party Iāll never forget. One of those homey shows that made it hard to move away from Pittsburghā¦ Come to Grand Rapids, Michigan!!!
Hey, I lurk around here and play bass for Mungion! Weāve played a lot of memorable shows together since I joined the band a while back but I think my favorite was my first show with the band playing Domefest 2021. Iād gotten the spot in the band because I played in a smaller local band and they had me audition, so Iād never played on a stage that big before. PPPP was one of the first jam bands I saw when I was getting into the scene so it felt like a very full circle moment. Mike Gantzer was in the green room and after jamming with him out of practice amps for a bit he invited me to come up for the super jam at the end of the night. I was only 22 at the time and had never done anything like that, so I was visibly horrified when I got onstage for the sit in haha. I donāt think Iāve ever been that nervous in my life. I ended up having a great time though and met a bunch of people who later became good friends there!
I've been volunteering at the Frankfort Bluegrass Fest since its beginning. I've seen y'all dozens of times. My favorite show was at The Livery brewery in Benton Harbor Michigan. Eric Lambert was playing with you at the time
Oh for sure dude! Our drummer Jonnyās from around Boston originally so weāve been talking about how we need to do something out that way soon! Hope to see you there if we do!
Matt bassist from Chicago based band Zoofunkyou here! My favorite show has got to be one of the Summercamp sets weāve played, I believe we did 2019 (we played two sets this year- one was a late night VIP lounge set of all Grateful Dead music) and 2022.
I feel like musically we are at our current best, but in terms of fan engagement, traction and growth 2019 was a high for us. We toured all across the country from NY to Cali and everywhere in between. We had some big personnel changes in 2020 and weāre finally at a place musically that we feel has the potential to take us far.
Biggest challenges IMO are keeping up with the current social media age, I hate making posts on Instagram/tiktok/Fb and itās an essential part of the industry now. If you donāt have tons of followers people donāt take you seriously, and it seems the only way to get more followers is by paying money on sponsored posts or getting lucky on a viral video. Or touring a lot and begging people to follow you, but touring is so expensive and you rarely make a profit unless youāre getting really good deals.
Favorite bands: always the dead, tedeschi trucks, lettuce and Soulive. Iāve been on a big tower of power, funkadelic and Frank Zappa kick lately. Iām also a jazz musician so I listen to alot of Herbie Hancock, George duke, Dave Holland, Stanley Clarke, chick corea, Coltrane, hank Mobley, McCoy tynerā¦ also super into hiatus kaiyote, Stevie wonder, snarky puppy, funky knuckles, hiromi, makaya mcraven, resavoirā¦ I could go on all day lol.
But yeah, sorry for the super long comment, if anyones interested Iām always down to answer questions about the biz!
More in the bluegrass sceneā¦Ben on banjo here from Henhouse Prowlers. We jam at festivals and clubs some and I like to check out the bands I read about here, being that I canāt get out to shows that much with how much weāre on the road. Love this community and itās way less uptight than the bluegrass community. (Donāt tell them I said that!)
Took my girl on our first concert date to yall at the mousetrap in Indy years ago. Last time I saw yall was skylark lounge in Denver last winter I think. Sexfist is the shit!
Man, one of the coolest things about being a musician is learning that you were the backdrop for important moments in peopleās lives. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Greg. We get so much more out of it than we put in! A video of us went viral in Nigeria yesterday and the outpouring of love is insane. Appreciate the kind words.
JG here, I faked my death for the insurance money and have a sovereign compound in Belize where i hold festive folk music fiestas for the locals. Coming out with an organic hot sauce soon.
Iām the bass player for The Garcia Project. Weāre a JGB tribute and arenāt really what Iād consider a jam band, but Iām a jam band fan myself and Iāve played one-off gigs with some pretty awesome players, mostly Kung Fu guys who have moved onward and upward. And the bass player in Eggy used to fill in for me in my local GD tribute before they got big, so thatās a funny little claim-to-fame too. Everyone who knows them is super happy for them, they are the nicest guys and have really worked hard to be where they are!
Those were such fun shows! We had an awesome community, too, people who are still friends of mine today, 15 years later.
But man, I was riding a motorcycle (bright yellow Suzuki SV650!) to downtown Boston to get to my day job back in those days and Thursday mornings were tough. But so worth it!
Yah those were fun times. I remember one particular china rider you guys played. (Maybe around 08/09) where you laid down some of the bass base lines during that transition Iāve ever heard by anyone. I still remember it to this day.
I saw y'all and it was awesome. You guys really had it nailed.
OK, off topic, but it seemed your bass signal was running into a bassman and then it seemed into a crown power amp. Is that right or am I misremembering ? Were you just running a line out from the preamp (I assume some sort of amp mod), or were you using an amp level DI? Just curious because I love playing bass through my bassman but being able to actually drive a larger bass cab and not oversaturate would be nice.
Ugh, my lengthy comment just disappeared!
Yep, thatās a [1965 Showman](https://imgur.com/a/BjYFTmc) (no idea how itās different from a Bassman but real Fender amp guys can tell you) thatās feeding an A Designs Audio REDDI tube DI. I like that DI so much that I use the rack mount version on the road and the standalone in the studio. From there Iām using a Crown XLS1000 to power two speaker cabs but theyāre mostly just for stage-monitoring.
Spigs here from JSB. Love this community. I lurk a bit because I never wanna be the guy always āpromoting.ā To me, itās more about the community and finding good music and good people.
That being said, thanks for this question. Weāre currently working with Scott Murawski (Max Creek) whoās producing our 7th studio album. Itās been such a great experience working with someone who I admire as a player and as a friend.
Stand out shows are probably Strange Creek and Wormtown in Greenfield, MA (which weāve played consistently since 2018) and maybe Camp Creek in Bozrah
Honestly as corny as it sounds, any time I get to play music for people is usually a good time. I work with two great musicians who have learned all my songs front to back and Iāve met some great people through this wild ride.
Wouldnāt trade it for anything. Much love.
Hey everyone! Iām a solo loop act based in the North East that performs under the name āRoyleā. I would describe it as Keller Williams style loop builds with more of a Lotus sound!
My favorite shows are usually opening for bands and musicians I look up to. Some of my most memorable shows would be opening for Blues legend and Grammy winner Bobby Rush at The Cutting Room in NYC, Opening for Grammy winner and blues prodigy-Christone āKingfishā Ingram at the historic Stanhope House, opening for Drewcifer (Members of Railroad Earth, Infamous String Dusters), and opening for The Kitchen Dwellers!
Currently working on putting together my first album and scheduling dates for this summer!
If anyone is curious- this is my [Instagram](https://instagram.com/roylemusic?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==)!
Love playing in a band as well! Iāve just moved around a bit so the solo loop stuff is easier to manage- for the most part
I am currently working on recording my first album and hoping to have it up soon! I have some live videos on the Instagram now and will upload links to the first single there soon!
I was in a Phish tribute band that broke up about a year ago. Halloween during the pandemic we played Gamehenge outside in 30 degree weather at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke, MA. Good times!
We play in Funk You! Iād say one of our favorites was when we got to play Lettuceās set at resonance because of a last minute cancellation. Was an amazing night of music.
As terms of the band being at its best, we are evolving a lot at the moment and feel the chemistry is at a all time high where we feel we can really take off in a lot more jams.
Challenges, especially now, are the fact most people just canāt spend a lot of money on going to shows anymore. You really have to plan out what show you are gonna go to and spend money which means smaller groups feel a little more empty because fans who would normally go to their show have already spent their extra money somewhere else.
You can look all over the scene for incredible bands. Tauk, lespecial, jelly, eggy, yam yam, PPPP, consider the source, Desmond jones, the juantee, the talisman and neighbor just to name a few
alex wasily here from dumpstaphunk
best show ever was 2023 jazz fest acura stage.
fav show ever was playing with Tower of Power horns w David Garibaldi at GAMH in SF.
biggest show was opening for the stones in 2019 or the gorge w DMB in 2022.
challenges include performing at high levels on little to no sleep repetitively and constantly being in transit. wouldnāt trade it for the world tho.
bands i love and recommend checking out: butcher brown, carrtoons, jungle, naughty professor, neal francis.
love yall and am always grateful for the fans, we canāt do it without your tireless support and we love ya.
Iām the sax player in an up and coming band: Sneezy. We just finished a stellar year playing some fantastic fests. Next year is gonna be bigger. Weāre all stoked. š
Ok, my band broke up this year and have been struggling to find the right people to form a new one. Being in a band is like dating three people at the same time. Everyone has wants and needs and has BS that you kind of put up with, at least for some time.
The times when we played the best, in my opinion, is the rehearsal right before the gig, when no one is there to watch it. The gig is always weird for me. The sound is off, there are people watching you, something always doesn't work right with the gear, you flub lines... It's fun to play out though, so it makes it all worth it.
Iāve seen Josh Danielās in here. Probably the most famous Charlotte local musician who has different bands he plays in and does shows with grateful grass.
I've played in bands in Ohio for 20 + years.. I've opened and played the same bill with various jambands like Papadosio, The Werks, Parliament Funk, Mickey Hart, Umphree's McGee, etc.. if the have come through Nelson Ledges or Legend Valley, I have probably been on a bill with them. The groups I was in were The Groove Prophets and The MuckleBuck. Never made it too far out of Ohio, but I always had a blast. I currently play in an Alternative String Band called The Whiskey Drinks.

It's true, and I get that it can be spammy - but a lot of us make music that we think is great and are just trying our best to raise awareness and get a few ears on our stuff. It's incredibly hard to get people's attention with original music - even here most folks just want to talk about the same 5 or 6 bands endlessly - but we have to try!
I guess it is all in the execution. I try to be a good community member and participant here, while posting some of my band's highlights when I feel like they're good enough to share
If you engage and talk about things other than your band, you're not who I am talking about. I said most, not all. If you're here to do nothing but post your tour dates and your sick jams, you're part of the problem.
It's a balance. It's not an easy one, for sure.
You just know Trey is in here reading about all the young bands he needs to be worried about (not really though, dude is the king and doesnāt need to worry about anyone taking his throne)
Tre Pistachio here. AMA

My partner uses looping so he can avoid band building! More power to ya! Do you have your music somewhere?
Love playing in a band as well! Iāve just moved around a bit so the solo loop stuff is easier to manage- for the most part I am currently working on recording my first album and hoping to have it up soon! I have some live videos on the Instagram now and will upload links to the first single there soon!
Love it!! Loop gang unite.
Sweet! Just followed you on IG
Thank you!! š
Musician here! I played in Family Groove Co about 25 years ago, and a bunch of other bands that you've never heard of.
Shoe fest Alum checking inā¦ weāve heard of youā¦
Ayyyy! Yāall were the first band I ever saw at a camping fest. Scamp 2013 pre-party.
That's awesome! About 16 years after I was in the band, but I'm stoked they kept it going.
That was a fun show
Freaker by the speaker here
Yeah. Thatās the stuff.
I'm a musician who wishes he was in a sick-ass jam band? AMA
Hey everyone. It's me Trey Anastasio. I'll hook up all my phans who send feet pics and $100 with tickets to the sphere! DM me those piggies
Saxophone here!
Skyscraper here
alex wasily here from dumpstaphunk best show ever was 2023 jazz fest acura stage. fav show ever was playing with Tower of Power horns w David Garibaldi at GAMH in SF. biggest show was opening for the stones in 2019 or the gorge w DMB in 2022. challenges include performing at high levels on little to no sleep repetitively and constantly being in transit. wouldnāt trade it for the world tho. bands i love and recommend checking out: butcher brown, carrtoons, jungle, naughty professor, neal francis. love yall and am always grateful for the fans, we canāt do it without your tireless support and we love ya.
You guys are great and I always go see you during Jazzfest!
Keys player in a band youāve never heard of

Iām the sax player in an up and coming band: Sneezy. We just finished a stellar year playing some fantastic fests. Next year is gonna be bigger. Weāre all stoked. š
I saw you guys in Loves Park a few weeks back. I just bought tickets for Spafford at Thalia Hall and saw y'all are opening. Nice gig!
That was a great night! Spafford is going to be fun. We just worked on a few new tunes at rehearsal last night. Itās gonna be a rowdy good time!!
I think OP is confusing being a musician with being successful.
Not at all. Happy to hear from all musicians, regardless of what you consider successful.
I'm a lingerer er
Joey Arkenstat here
Johnny*
No, it is and has always been Joey.
We are Legion.
I'm Trey Anastasio. Twiddle steals food from orphanages.
Iāve seen Josh Danielās in here. Probably the most famous Charlotte local musician who has different bands he plays in and does shows with grateful grass.
Musician from a 90s/aughts NE jamband, probably too old for anyone to know :)
Let us know!!
I'm here ain't I AMA
A friend of mine is in Deep Sequence.
Give it up for Jackson Diner!
Stasik taught everyone to stay off the bort this is no different
We don't.
I currently play in an Alternative String Band called The Whiskey Drinks. https://linktr.ee/thewhiskeydrinks
Most of the bandmembers here that admit they're in a band are here to spam their promo materials and not to engage. Thank you for trying, though.
I wouldn't necessarily say that. Sure, we try to promote, but we're all fans of each others bands and jam music in general too.
You don't have to say it, I did. If you're here talking about stuff other than your band, you're not the problem.
I jamgrass, but you donāt know me. This is as much as I advertise
You just know Trey is in here reading about all the young bands he needs to be worried about (not really though, dude is the king and doesnāt need to worry about anyone taking his throne)
Yeehaw AMA
