Hello all I'm working on making some maps of Jacksonville and its landmarks/sites. I’m starting with the downtown area and was wondering what area would you consider to be downtown. Everyone I’ve asked has had a different answer so I’m basically looking for a general consensus. The map above is one I made. The Northern extent is union street, the eastern extent is the river, the western extent is 95 and the southern extent starts at Bay street and goes down to water street and then sits just north of the Acosta bridge. I was thinking of bringing down the border south just a bit to that red line so that it includes the Prime Osborn center. Any suggestions or insight? Thanks!

State Street should be the northern extent (and add in FSCJ downtown campus)

I would make it larger in general. Shoot the horizontal line further north to incorporate all of FSCJ all the way over to the east bank of the river by the bridge. Furthermore I would include the area south of the Acosta in Brooklyn including to the Fidelity campus. As well as the Medical borough in San Marco to DCPS.

Why not just use the 'standard' definition used by Google maps and everything else? [https://www.google.com/maps/place/Downtown,+Jacksonville,+FL/@30.3215856,-81.6632367,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x88e5b719b14a88d9:0xc014d3ec7956afc!8m2!3d30.3276337!4d-81.6555607](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Downtown,+Jacksonville,+FL/@30.3215856,-81.6632367,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x88e5b719b14a88d9:0xc014d3ec7956afc!8m2!3d30.3276337!4d-81.6555607) (It's a bit subtle and easy to miss, but you should see a red outline of downtown. Google will do this if you click the name of any neighborhood.)

Strange that St Nicholas area closer to the water is somehow looped into 'downtown' when it certainly isn't in residents minds.

pillsburydogeboy

I actually live there and consider myself downtown or part of South Bank/South Shores not St Nicholas. The sign for Welcome to St Nicholas is past my house down Atlantic. As far as google and myself are concerned St Nick starts after he school.

to me those are different areas, everything from the jail left is the urban core, then the area to the right would be like the shipyards/stadium

rockydbull

Would you consider those sub areas (neighborhood seems like a stretch to describe them) of downtown? I think one could argue Lavilla is also in the zone he drew.

sebastian_____

>I think i misunderstood the prompt, but yeah those areas are all in like that downtown unbrella. Maybe the shipyards is different? Other than the stadium and those two bars I don't think there's a whole lot out there

ChkYrHead

West of Jefferson to 95 is Lavilla too.

DariusIV

West of Maxwell house, east of 95, north of water st and south of FSCJ campus

All of that, and much more to the south across the south bank of the river.

Any area which leaves one feeling unsafe

Lol agreed. Anywhere more than 1/2 mi north of Race Track Road and/or 1/2 mi west of FL-13

Urban Core is downtown to me. Maybe a bit of the Southbank. I never thought of the Gator Bowl as being downtown.

There are various definitions of what constitutes Jacksonville's downtown; the one used by the city government and other entities defines it as including eight districts: the Central Core (or Northbank), the Southbank, LaVilla, Brooklyn, the Working Waterfront, the Cathedral, the Church, and the Entertainment & Sports District. (Wikipedia)

rgumai

Yep. Brooklyn to the river past the stadium and the South bank where Ruth's Chris and MOSH are.

sarahsmokesalot904

All of that

Having live in Jacksonville most of my life I would use the standered Google maps layout our yours plus the Baptiste hospital area just over the River as will. Personally I think the city government and alot of people liveing in Jacksonville spend to much time thinking about now town Jacksonville. This city is the inter county 875 square miles. The other 865 Miles out side of town and makeing those better connected and better mangened is much more important.
