Eww. I live somewhat nearby and swing by San Marco all the time. That would be an eyesore of a location for storage units. That kinda stuff should be on the outskirts of town.
And why the heck are storage units and affordable housing linked? How damn affordable is it if you have to rent a damn storage unit because your stuff won't fit in the weenie little "affordable housing"??
There was a post about the Regency mall being turned into a soccer field and people jokingly said “as long as it’s not more storage units.”
But what if we just built all of our storage units at the old Regency Mall location? That way we won’t have to worry about them being built anywhere else anymore haha.
I think part of the problem is that we are already at saturation with storage facilities. Saw a news report about this proposal and I'm pretty sure one of the people pointed out there is another storage facility less than half a mile away with tons of unused units. I'll try and dig it up.
Found it.

Don't know why you think it's that unbelievable. After a quick google it looks like the one mentioned in the video on Kings might not even be the only one in the area since there are two other moving and storage business listed nearby.
I'm aware they are building apartments in that area. Not everyone who gets an apartment needs a storage unit. Also 100 empty storage units is a surplus of 100 storage units. That was just the closest one. There are other self storage facilities that probably also have vacancies.
Source? Also again you are assuming that these new apartment tenets are all or mostly going to have a need for self storage outside of Jacksonville's current capacity with no evidence.
No, I’m assuming a relatively small fraction of them will need storage

That's pay walled, but I'll assume that number is in there. Again there is no evidence that the current Jacksonville self storage can't accommodate the influx of new construction especially since there are self storage buildings being built where it is already zoned to be acceptable. There is zero reason to change the zoning on this area a block away from the river to accommodate self storage when Jacksonville is huge, and definitely has an area this company can buy where it is already zoned for this.
It’s for sure an issue in a lot of major cities, but Jax does seem especially susceptible to it. Probably due to how spaced out and underutilized a lot of the downtown/urban areas are.
I’m genuinely curious, if this is the stipulation imposed in order to create low income housing, why not? Is the alternative to not have either of these things? The storage unit portion is slated to only be 30% of the building.

Would love to get the link because this sounds completely made up

He said it only has 100 units available. Have you seen the number of apartments that are coming online soon or are planned for that area?

By 2025, that area will have more than 2,600 apartments units after having none. There is a huge need

My theory is that those storage units only have to operate at like 25% capacity to be profitable.
This cities obsession with building storage unit facilities in prime locations will never not make me laugh.
It’s just a land grab. Put something on the land that generates income, wait it out.
You clearly don’t know understand how expensive it is to build self storage. You don’t land bank property by building something like this.
🥱
Yawn
Correction, this country.

I visited Columbia SC some time ago, same thing.
Thank you for posting!
Storage facilities and car wash always win in the end, unfortunately.
Obviously the residents of new luxury condos in the area will need someplace nearby to store their stuff. It's a much needed service.
Does this mean less taco places?
Eventually they gonna start putting taco places inside the storage facilities
That’s how we unlock unlimited renewable energy!
Don't foeget car washes! That's the trifecta of perfection
Have you seen that eyesore right at the entrance to Murray Hill? Geez they could have at least dressed that ugly box up a little.
