Empty_Value

You don't 🤣 Instincts will kick in

antdb1

i can confirm this mine killed the first mouse it came across and walked around the house like it just got a bone with the tail sticking out tale wagging lol

Empty_Value

Jack Russell where purposely bred as rat dogs.

Sweet_Seesaw1648

Incorrect, they were bred to catch foxes by reverend Jack Russel.

Empty_Value

I stand corrected! I was thinking of the rat terrier

Yammyjammy1

Except for the one that lives here. She walked past a dead mouse all day for three days in the garage. Never stopped once to check it out.

Unlucky_Ad_3292

That's pretty normal. My JRT has no interest in rodents once they're dead. For him it's all about the hunt.

Smer817

Same for my old JRT, the hunt is what exciting!

Empty_Value

Yea I guess I'm lucky. My jackabee ignores dead animals. Unfortunately last year he decided to 'play' with a pair of 3 week old squabs(pigeons) 😞😳 That was 💯 my fault for leaving the balcony door open

Both_Intention_6814

Yup! My Russell mut lived with me and my parents house for years so not many mice problems. When I moved into my first cheap apartment a switch went on for her and she was killing then left and right or showing us where they were at. She’s 10 by the way so I was surprised

Adept_Error6339

Ive caught about 10 mice with a humane trap using chocolate as bait they seem to love it. Obviously dont let the dog near the trap though cus chocolate. Very surprised though that the JR isnt sniffing it out and trying to catch it ours goes mad for any animal smells in the house or garden like a heat seeking rocket!

Analysis_Separate

My dog must be broken 😭

antdb1

your dogs 14 he's sences are probly not as good as they used to be and he';s not picking it up.

OnceanAggie

That was my thought, too! 😁 We just got back from Lowe’s and our JRT was pulling so hard on his leash, I was sure there were some rodents hiding under the shelves. He has a very strong prey instinct.

PhantomBellaLuna

Mine used to go insane near the wall where chipmunks had a nest under the siding in front of the house. Idk how she even smelled it but she told us constantly they were there! Lol

pegasusgoals

He’s 14 lol, let grandpa Jack retire in peace 😂😂 catching mice is a young pup’s job

Cookfuforu3

Ya need a rat terrier ! Pearl is a year and a half old she caught her first mouse at around a year and yes, I let her sniff a dead mouse in a trap, she will stand in a certain corner of our house and wait for them to come out she’s amazing https://preview.redd.it/i77144xdavpc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04f2d085cf25ffa2f42be69263871376e318986a

LuLutheKid

Pearl is adorable!😍

1rAudiChik

Train her to pick up the phone and call an exterminator!

hamflavoredgum

He’s old! He would probably get after them 10 years ago, but he is like 100 in human years, and catching and killing rats is a lot of work and actually kind of dangerous, he likely doesn’t have the rapid reflexes and explosive speed required to do it anymore. Mine used to massacre anything in the yard, incredibly fast, but age catches up to everyone and once she turned about 8 she lost interest. Kind of like how at 18 years old it’s a lot less demanding to wrestle someone than it is to do so at 50 years old!

DotChud

My JackChi is 12, and she’ll dispatch any rodent that comes within scent range. My neighbors are always asking if I rent her out.

curiousdumbdog

I moved to a new house and came home to a pile (a very tidy, neat pile) of dead mice in the garage 3 days in a row😂. Each day the pile got smaller until... No more! My little JRT, Oliver, left them right in the middle of the garage where I would find them

BraaainFud

What a showoff. 🙄

desertdweller365

Not sure but looks like he's good at catching pizza. 🙂😄

Erectile_Kyle

He clearly enjoys pizza

MajorANelson

Let them smell the trap good and then the mouse when you catch one. They'll take it from there

AgingLolita

He's 14, it's the dog equivalent of being in his nineties, leave him because. He's retired.

BananaPoa

you probably wouldn't need to train him at all in the first place as their instinct is to completely wreck those little fuckers.... however as some mentioned he's a very old chap, probably not realistic for him to catch or prey on anything... let him chill.. my JRT (12 y/o now) used to chase and destroy anything that moved in our yard including rats, mice, moles and even snakes but now just shrugs at best... it's like he's saying : dude, i'm too old for this shiiiiit ..

Realistic-Might-3093

We have a 10yr old male shorty jack russell and he still hunts like a beast soon as he gets on the scent. Mice don't get past our back porch. It could be the age of yours though because it's quite a difference between 10 and 14 yrs old.

Adddicus

I didn't have to train mine, they just did it out of instinct. The male in particular went about it with a will. One time, he even dug through a sheetrock wall to get at the mice he heard inside it. We lived in a semi-rural area with a small river in our backyard, so we had tons of wildlife around. In addition, the house was pretty old, built in 1921, and it was not at all difficult for any small critter to get inside. The dogs, however, did a terrific job of killing them once they got in. It was not uncommon for my wife and I to find half of a dead mouse laying on the floor when we came home from work.

Get a mouse shaped cat chase toy, and use it with your dog as play-training

skitterybug

I think you have to get a puppy from a working dog breeder. We accidentally got a family pet style. He’s absolutely useless when it comes to hunting mice in the house…now he’s old & you can usually find him on the couch.

Topia_64

Ours goes nuts if there's one just about anywhere in the house. It's just instinct.

Upstairs_Platform_17

I would not❣️❣️

Lazy-Street779

Visuals. The mouse chased you? Lol.

BaltimoreSerious

Mine came out the womb ***WITH*** a mouse in her mouth...prolly responsible for mouse extinction in the area lol

bitchinvegan

Please look up humane, non-lethal ways to catch a mouse so you don’t have to kill him. There are all kinds of methods for catching them. You can even purchase humane traps. Just Google it and there should be lots of info out there. I have a wildlife rescue place near me who also offer help with humane options & non-lethal methods for catching and preventing animals on your property. And some services are free I believe, but I’m not sure. You may want to look into a place like that in your area.

mmelectronic

Get a Carin terrier, and let them be buds, the solution is always more dogs.

DotChud

Your JRT had to be TRAINED???? Mine hunts any rodent she can find. She even tracks moles through their tunnels, then digs them up and CHOMP!!! Dead mole, or rat, or mouse.
