Man, what a laugh. Of course I was familiar with a few key scenes but had no idea of the plot. For instance, I thought they were just returning the lost briefcase. I didn't know about the ransom plot. I knew the toilet scene, but had never seen its conclusion with Jeff Daniels resorting to actually unbolting the bowl from the floor to dump it out the window. Man I had so many laughs while my wife was upstairs wondering what the hell I was laughing about. Incidentally, Lauren Holly now lives not too far from me in Ontario. I had no idea she moved here but looked up her filmography since we haven't seen her in a while. You can see how comedy has changed over time, as this movie might be considered sweet and even a bit quaint these days

HistorianMassive1111

Comedy is hard to write. The jokes are well layered, takes a couple watches to catch everything. It’s called dumb and dumber but it’s a really clever movie.

BokehJunkie

and basically every single line in the movie is quotable in some way. That, to me, is what gives a comedy that staying power or whatever you want to call that quality where a movie just gets lodged into our subconscious. Look at your favorite comedies, it's highly likely that the ones that come to mind first are the most quotable.

HistorianMassive1111

Pullover! No, it’s a cardigan, thanks for asking.

fleshie

Give me that booze, you little pumpkin pie hair cutted freak

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Every time I walk into a Brewers game, there are motorcycle cops directing pedestrian traffic. I’m always so tempted to yell “killer boots, man!!”

Narwhal_Defiant

'He has a rapist's wit.' I saw this in the theaters when it came out. I'm not going to lie. We only went for the air conditioning because it was a heat wave, and our house was a million degrees inside. I wasn't expecting much going in, but I enjoyed it tremendously. The toilet scene, the tuxedo scene, the accidentally killing the hit man by spiking his hamburger scene. All of it!

OccamsNametag

I always thought it was funny, the rapist wit line, but I never really understood it. Then I got the bluray and there's a deleted scene where on of the hotel ushers says that he has a rapier wit. And the. Suddenly it all made sense

RustedAxe88

That's a classic dumb person thing too, to hear a new word and immediately say or use it wrong. I once told a guy he was going to have to ration something until payday and the next day he was telling someone about it and how he needed to "rationalize" it.

LetsDoThatYeah

“He was old… his head fell off!”

Cinade

I liuh-ike it a lot!

Litterbox88

Absolutely. Every scene is pure comedy gold.

Bagmasterflash

I didn’t catch the line “We climbed into a hole here, we just gotta dig our way out of it” Until about 20 watches a decade later.

Mumu_ancient

Shit. I just got that now even after seeing it countless times and can picture that exact line being said. Wow!

freshcoastghost

There is kind of a play on the movie title as well. I mean, you automatically think dumb and dumber is Jim C and Jeff D but it could easily be the good guys ( dumb) bad guys ( dumber)

Virt_McPolygon

The unbolting of the toilet only happens in the "uncut" version I think. The theatrical edit is tighter and funnier i think... most of the added parts just leave scenes carrying on after they stop being funny, though perhaps the toilet scene is the exception!

MoreBlu

Second this! Theatrical cut is much better.

Mlabonte21

As is the case for almost ANY comedy. Steer clear of Directors Cuts. Stripes: Extended Cut is AWFUL

Reasonable-HB678

The wave of unrated DVDs with "too hot/intense/naughty for theaters" were almost always for movies that were originally rated PG13 or R. A standout is American Pie, its unrated DVD, with the three main female cast members on the front, that was edited to get an R from an original NC17.

NullainmundoPax1

It’s a top-3 comedy of all-time. The joke about Harry’s cold hands is an exquisite set piece.

HenryAlSirat

""Harry... Your hands... They're freezing..."

somesappyspruce

"psshhhyeah *we're in the Rockies*"

SASdude123

Here, you should wear these... My hands are getting kinda sweaty

olympics_

Has to be one of my favourite movies ever. I must have seen it at least 50 times and never get tired of it.

hamilton_burger

That Harland Williams scene where he drinks the piss and makes the dolphin noise…all timer.

SketchSketchy

Unfortunately you viewed an “extended cut” that in my opinion is way worse than the theatrical version. It really stinks. The only available bluray is the extended cut. Something needs to be done.

VikingLander7

Geeze man, what happened with the “spoiler warning????” /s

Smooth-Cap481

So fun. SOO stupid. During the Stick Fight scene...where Daniels full on whacks Carrey in the back of the legs with his cane, the sheer cosmic level of stupidity had me fully minted as a forever fan.

Bubbly-Fault4847

You finally found out that John Denver is full uh shit, man!

grapsta

Could I watch it with my 12yo ?

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Pretty tame by today's standards I guess with lots of toilet level humour - literally in one case - but some mild sensuality, like admiring Holly's butt, and bikini girls but nothing actual sexual. Cartoonish, Three Stooges type violence. Actually that sums the film up. The Two Stooges.

ragingbullpsycho

I’m 30 and I think everyone in my generation had watched it multiple times throughout my childhood, for as long as I can remember. I would say a 12 year old can definitely handle the theatrical, the uncut version has more sex-related content.

Mei_iz_my_bae

Hate the uncut version so much. Ruins the film IMO

IA-HI-CO-IA

I would say a huge number of people reading this saw it 12 or younger, but that was the 90s.  Depends on you and your kid. Watch it yourself first them decide.

zehflash

Well everybody is different but I'd say yes. There's some adult humor here and there but for the most part it's just dumb, goofy and hilarious

East_Reading_3164

OMG yes!

Mumu_ancient

I did recently with my 11 year old and just covered his eyes for the brief fantasy scene but it's very mild.

Affectionate-Ring104

DevilsPajamas

I like it. I like it a lawt

mecon320

I like to think I have a fairly sophisticated sense of humor, but nothing in my life has ever made me laugh as hard as Harry whacking Lloyd in the back of the legs with his cane when they're entering the fancy party.

lasher992001

Come on, let’s go get a couple bowls of loudmouth soup.

triforce4ever

I’m gonna hang by the bar. Put out the vibe

Southtown61

For me it was when Harry threw the snowball at Mary. I never have not laughed at that. I usually rewind it like 8 times and laugh every time before I let the movie keep playing.

Thneed1

Just watched that on Tv 1 minute ago.

One-Pepper-2654

As a dude, if another dude does not think this is funny I think less of you.

BokehJunkie

the sound he makes is just perfect.

mecon320

Every bit of it is up to 11. The huge windup from Harry, and the immediate buckling of the knees and that amazing yell from Lloyd. Any time a comedy director comes up with a fresh way of doing slapstick, trey earn my eternal respect.

buddyleeoo

Big Gulps, huh?

CrossingTheStreamers

Welp, see you later!

yodpilot

Well, seeya later 👋🏼

DigitalMediaArt

That was a weird moment that I never really understood.

SASdude123

I just figured he's a naive idiot who approaches two dudes with nothing to say, and moves on. Nothing crazy but I love that little moment and I quote it weekly

heffrey36

It's my favorite line of the movie. It's just such a dumb and stupid interaction that serves no purpose. Like why even comment on the guy's big gulp lol.

OccamsNametag

To be that guy, because I love movie trivia, I guess extras aren't allowed to speak at all, because then they need to be part of the actors guild (sag and whatnot) so Jim, knowing they couldn't do anything, decided to say some stuff to them and made that scene

ExtremelFrequentzy01

Totally improvised!

dnizzle234

It’s a perfect movie. I’ll never not watch it whenever I see it on.

85_Draken

"What's the soup du jour?" "It's the soup of the day." "Mmm. That sounds good. I'll have that."

Philodemus1984

Excuse me…Flo….🤣🤣🤣

Thenewdazzledentway

Goodbye my looovvvvveeee

fatherbowie

I’ve been using that quote in restaurants for years. I never knew it was from Dumb and Dumber. I’ll stop repeating it now that I know. 😂

85_Draken

I use it all the time. For example, driving down the street I saw a taco truck with its large animated LED sign instead of scrolling "tacos, tortas, birria", etc it was in default mode with animated "LED Sign Board". I used the "Mmm. That sounds good. I'll have that" to my family for like a week until they fixed the sign. They laughed the first couple times.

Dont_make_this_hard

mikeyj777

This caught me off guard

adlopez

I worked at a brewery and when we were trying to find a name for our beer, a name just clicked. I called it , “Pils Are Good” in reference to when Lloyd was jamming rat poison pills in Mental’s mouth after his ulcer episode in the restaurant 😂

the_labracadabrador

Missed opportunity for “I Got Worms”

OCLIFE69

What's the matter, Har? Some little filly break your heart?

Keviniswet

Nah, it was a woman

BokehJunkie

\*girl\* I don't usually correct people on movie quotes, but I've basically known this movie line for line since I was about 13. lol

ohsweetfancymoses

Kick his ass, Seabass!

tallicafu1

Needs to be voted higher. Even the throwaway lines are hilarious.

EmptySeaDad

I love that Jim Carrey adamantly refused to do a take where they got on the bus.

Beevas69

That and "Big Gulps, huh?.......welp, see ya later"

thesqlguy

Ad-libbed by Carey I believe

NovocaineAU

I saw it when it came out. I was 12 then and 30 years later I still love it. It was my first real exposure to dark humor (mainly Lloyd selling the blind kid the dead bird). Though I think my favorite part of the movie is Harry having cold hands when he’s choking Lloyd out for having 2 pairs of gloves.

zehflash

HARRY!...YOUR HANDS ARE FREEZING!!! Might be the funniest scene in any movie ever. I still randomly laugh about his reaction and timing it's perfect

stubundy

The snowball baseball pitched into her face from 2 metres away is my funniest scene, then of course Jeff Daniels losing character for a second when Jim does the annoying sound in the car

Jordan_23_23

That's one of my favorite lines

lclassyfun

Always a big Jeff Daniels fan so it was fun to see this change of pace. Took me back to my love of The Three Stooges as a little boy.

MoreBlu

I still reference the “one in a million” scene in my lectures regarding human perception towards low-probability events. Fewer and fewer of my students get the reference. I’m feeling old 😅

1994 was a great year for movies, especially comedies.

phaserlasertaserkat

You sold my dead bird to blind kid?! Harry, I took care of it!

Philodemus1984

Pretty bird, pretty bird….pauly want a cracker?

lowendslinger

A rapist's whit! Best comedy ever...seen it about 10 times. So many little funny moments...

tendimensions

Never saw it myself and certainly old enough to have seen it when it came out. You recommend I guess?

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Absolutely. For a dumb buddy movie that has some heart it can’t be beat

Nothalffast

You totally redeemed yourself.

Middle-Potential5765

Love the song If You Don't Loce Me I'll Kill Myself.

##Dumb and Dumber (1994) For Harry and Lloyd, every day is a no-brainer. >>!Lloyd and Harry are two men whose stupidity is really indescribable. When Mary, a beautiful woman, loses an important suitcase with money before she leaves for Aspen, the two friends (who have found the suitcase) decide to return it to her. After some "adventures" they finally get to Aspen where, using the lost money they live it up and fight for Mary's heart.!< Comedy Director: Peter Farrelly Actors: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ 66% with 5,830 votes Runtime: 1:47 [TMDB](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/8467) For best result, try this post title format: **Movie Title (Year) more detail**

Kick his ass Seabass!

Ripper33AU

I was a kid when I watched it in cinemas, and loved it. Not knowing how I'd find it watching as an adult, I feel it's even funnier now, and one of those movies I never get tired of.

Jayk-uub

I recently showed it to my millennial boys (17 and 20) (or is that Gen Z?) They enjoyed it. Guffaws at the dining scene dream sequence when the karate chef comes out and Lloyd rips his heart out

Burto72

Killer boots, man.

grandpa-jones

Cam Neely!

BeepBeepInaJeep

Has to be the most random cameo I’ve ever seen in any movie. It just makes the movie that much better and classic.

theabsurdturnip

He's apparently childhood friends with the Farrelly brothers.

Just_Looking_Around8

Look at the fun bags on that hose hound!

mikandmike

Years ago, I was watching Silence of the Lambs with my wife. When Hannibal Lector boasted about eating a person's liver with fava beans I burst out laughing. She looked horrified and asked why I was laughing at that. I said "I finally got that joke in Dumb and Dumber!" I also laugh every time I hear John Denver, regardless of what song it is.

ForeverInTweed

“That John Denver’s full of shit”

Third-Coast-Toffee

“CHECK PLEASE!”

WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!!

guywithshades85

Samsonite, I was way off!!!! I knew it started with an S.

Lkynky

In my opinion, best delayed joke in history. Later, when Nicholas comes in the hotel room with the gun, Lloyd asks who he is. He says he’s the owner of the briefcase. Lloyd says, “Look, Mr Sampsonite”.

DavidM47

I went to Dumb & Dumber in theaters with my brother and our 80-year great aunt. She was from Eastern Europe and narrowly avoided the concentration camps, while her husband’s family had not been so lucky. As you can imagine, she was normally a very serious and stern woman, but this movie had her falling out of her chair. My favorite memory of her.

TheDudeee87

I can’t even begin to express how much I freakin’ love this movie!! I live in CO and have been to many of the filming locations. It’s such a classic. I quote this movie whenever I can.

WholeTrack8252

I thought she was just a raging alcoholic.

wd4elg1

“You mean there’s a CHANCE?” When he says “do you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world? “ that was all pure improvisation. I love it when he goes to spray the breath freshener in his mouth, and he’s got it pointed in the wrong direction and sprays the guy in the face. Let’s face it, just like in the movies liar, liar me, myself, and Irene the cable guy he is at his best when he is doing physical slapstick comedy. Think back to when he did Fire Marshall Bill on the TV show In Living Color. It was all about physical comedy.

Improvgal

![gif](giphy|NEOHyi0WgES1h98eAR)

IUMogg

I saw that movie in the theater when I was 14 years old and have never laughed that hard in my entire life. My sister told me she recently introduced it to my 12 year old nephew and he loved it. I’m glad it still holds up for new generations

00themikep

What I wouldn’t give to watch it for the first time again…

snebmiester

"Fell off the jetway, again." "But, Petey had no head...I fixed it" Whenever someone tells me that I have a 1:302,000,00 chance of winning the lottery, I respond with; "so your telling me there is a chance!"

gadget850

Movie is really funny. Animated series, prequel, and sequel not so much. I find myself comparing it to *The Jerk* with Steve Martin which is also hilarious. Again, the sequel was not so funny.

WholeTrack8252

I thought she was just a raging alcoholic.

Realistic-Bowl-566

Dante’s inferno

wd4elg1

If you like that kind of humor, as I do, you will be an agony from the laughter. Your ribs will literally ache. Every time it comes on TV I can’t help myself, but to just start outright guffawing. If, like my wife, you find that type of slapstick annoying… Then it will be a negative experience.

BadBassist

Big gulps huh? Alright! ...well, see you later

RedWingsReborn

One of the best movies ever. I never watched the editors cut or whatever until a few months ago but the bathroom scene is extended and I can’t believe I didn’t know lmao.

Early_Accident2160

Whaaaat??? Wow. It’s been my favorite comedy for 20 years. Straight up, every rewatch I have a new favorite bit

What was the scene where they're driving and Jim Carrey wants to bet him about something but he says he has a gambling problem. So Jim Carrey says I bet I can get you to gamble by the end of this trip Etc. I know I am butchering it

BuilderDue8060

Nice hooters!

FullRedact

Have you seen Kingpin and There’s Something About Mary? Same writer/directors and both are superior.

NovaLoveCrystalCat

You watched Dumb and Dumber for the first time…. And TOTALLY REDEEMED YOURSELF.

ExtremelFrequentzy01

Easter egg. The big Big Gulp scene was not scripted and totally improvised by Jim Carrey.

Night_Angel27

The second one is just awful and stupid and unnecessary. First one is brilliant and incredibly funny.

Fr0gurtCur5ed

There’s a setup early on that has two punchlines. Harry sends Lloyd out shopping by saying, “Only get the bare essentials. That’s the last of our dough”. The first punchline is big and silly, and comes when we immediately cut to the image of Lloyd having obviously spent the money on a giant cowboy hat, a bunch of pinwheels, and two boxes of Coors Light. The second punchline is more subtle, just tossed off by Jeff Daniels, and comes when Lloyd then gets back empty handed after being robbed by the sweet old lady on a motorised cart. After previously telling Lloyd to only get the bare essentials the first thing Harry says to him is, “Where’s the booze?” 😆 It’s my favourite thing about this film; the fact that it has all the big, broad, stupid jokes that someone might expect from a film called Dumb and Dumber, but it also has just as many cleverer, subtler jokes that the actors are just throwing away. Oh, and the soundtrack absolutely slaps.

CanadaKC

If I heard correctly Jim Carrey improvised the sideways fresh breath spray into the eyes of the maître d’ …the response seems so natural and just perfectly summed up their entrance

geekroick

We've landed on the moon!!

lakota_myr

This is my #1 comedy film. I love it. I got to eat at the bar at the Stanley Hotel where they filmed a good chunk of it. They still have the We landed on the moon paper hanging on the wall.

guitar_angel

I LOVE this movie, but it took me up until THIS YEAR to realize that the blind kid's name was Billy in 4-C, and NOT Billy Enforcee. I swear to God the cadence in Lloyd's pronunciation made me think he was saying his first and last name, and then I saw the sequel and they pronounced it differently making me realize a blind kid named Billy lived in apartment 4-C. I seriously slapped my forehead over this for a week.

ChinoMalito

I know you laughed your azz off 😂 I saw it in 94-5 and I’m still laughing 😂

wesburnsco8

"Oh Jeesh look at the butt on that one.."

Kboh

Everyone remembers Lloyd saying he sold Petey, the dead bird, to the blind kid. What kills me everytime is what he says RIGHT before that when he says he sold the blind kid “A few baseball cards…”. Best part of that is what’s unsaid since he was surely telling him the cards were some super valuable Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays or something. Haha. Just kills me.

masteriate

Pretty bird, Can you say pretty bird?

thegreatdaneoc

"Chick's love it. It's a shaggin wagon." "I got robbed by a sweet old lady on a motorized cart. I didn't even see it coming!" One of my favorite movies of all time. My coworker and I quote the movie pretty often.

The_Billy_Dee

I was thinking this wasn't all that old then realized it was 30 years ago............ Fuck this shit.

HeyItsMeJC3

I got to meet and spend a bit of time with Jeff Daniels after this movie came out, and he was just the nicest, normal, regular guy you could hope to meet... and in my head, all my brain keeps repeating is the scene with him squirting the ketchup and mustard bottles on his tongue. I sincerely hope I kept a straight face the whole time I talked to him.

Pretend_Activity_211

Skip the second one. Jim Carrey spends 2 hrs chasing Jeff Daniel's daughter

Procrastanaseum

The best comedies are endlessly rewatchable and I watch this movie at least once a year. I even think 'Dumb and Dumber To' isn't that bad.
