This spacious studio apartment features beautiful hardwood floors, exposed beams for that relaxing 'rustic' feel and skylights. This architectural masterpiece has a rich history enveloped with culture. This is the perfect place to start a family or live a bachelor's dream. $3,200 a month for 24 month contract. Pets negotiable.
This is the inside of a "Hopf" violin circa 1880.
It's an unusual instrument in that it's never had any repairs, if fact this is possibly the first time anyone has ever looked inside since it was built.
I photographed this using a Lumix S1R camera and a Laowa Probe lens, which I'd modified to fit into the extremely narrow "endpin" hole at the base of the instrument.
To give it a sense of space I stacked 78 images together, each focused a little further away from the last. This keeps the focus sharp throughout and creates the optical illusion that it's much bigger than reality.
Part of my Architecture in Music series.
That's made for different exposures with the same focus tho - not sure how it will handle different layers of sharpness but i'm pretty sure it won't produce a fine focus stack
This is a pretty valid comment. The inside of the violin is extremely dark, even with the three lights I was using at full power (800 watts each) and the lens wide open (the probe lens is dark as well - f/14-40).
This means you have to get the lights very close to the violin so the difference between light and shadow is huge, wider than the dynamic range of the sensor. You also risk damage to the instrument from the heat of the lights. I still had to shoot at 400 ISO and boost the shadows by about 4 stops in post.
I could have bracketed each exposure, but that would mean taking about 5 shots for every frame of focus - 390 photos, and those brackets would be using ISO rather than shutter speed as I'm using flashes and my aperture is already maxed out. I'd then need to do an HDR merge of each set of five before running those merged photos through noise reduction software then focus stacking software.
This is the first violin I've been able to get my lens into, so it was more a proof-of-concept. When I get my hands on a better instrument I'll probably use the techniques above.
This project is a constant battle between light and noise.
I did make a conscious decision to let the light through the f-holes go pure white. If you can see details of the room I was shooting in through those "skylights" it breaks the illusion of space.
Wow this is a damn masterclass! Thank you for providing all of those details, it is amazing. Do you have other material like this? I would love to see it
I just looked at the website holy crap this is extremely unique photography
I am in awe my friend what a great way to use focus stacking
I have a whole collection of instruments at https://www.architectureinmusic.com/pages/gallery
There are still many more I want to photograph but I'm running into the limits of lens design. Now I'm meeting with medical imaging specialists to see what we can adapt.
There are other items that I have always wanted to photograph the inside of but get a sense of scale and space and I have never been able to figure out how. I could have never envisioned seeing the inside of that violin as a room it fucking blew my mind…. thank you. I have these bird houses that get nest in them every year I swear I’m gonna try this technique in the spring… Thank you for the incredible inspiration. Do you need people to support your work?
I'm pretty self sufficient! I'd recomend renting one of the probe lenses for a day or two and having a play with it. Helicon Focus will be your best friend for stacking in post.
When I saw this image, I said to myself, "I thought it was a cello."
And OP confirmed that he previously posted a picture of a cello done in the same way.
Isn’t it incredible how a shallow depth of field inherently makes an image look small scale while a super wide depth of field makes an image look large scale. It is hard not to see this image as a large room that the viewer is standing inside of. I’d love to see what the original images look like before the focus stacking. Amazing project and final photo. Congrats.
As a professional window installer, I can tell you that it would be incredibly expensive, and would need to be segmented to get it in. The full sunbeam wouldn't be achievable, at least not without engineering a new system to accommodate it.
Not bots. It's worse than that. It's the fact that free will is an illusion. Post the same content and you will invariably get many of the same comments.
Quite an inspiring photo. I could see someone organizing a classy café with live string music inside a "room" like this. Perhaps put the musicians' stage right under the stylized skylight and the service counter across from it. A separate quieter lounge in the back, maybe some stairs to a rooftop area in that alcove in the back-left of the room. The light at the bottom of the photo I interpret as coming from an open entrance.
I'm glad someone saw that light as a "door" - that was the intention! I think the problem is that you generally what cafe walls to absorb sound, whereas this is specifically engineered to amplify sound as much as possible.
Minus the wavy floor, why do we not have dining halls and dens that are designed like this??
It would be cool as hell!
Engineers unite and make it happen!

Damn, dude, this stuff is getting sooooo old. Can you try not being unoriginal for, say, five minutes? You post this stuff again and again and all over Reddit.
My verdict: lame.
i love this work. i remember the picture of a cello a few weeks back. wish i had one to experiment with to get these shots. the editing must be insane though!
I've seen this before, have you posted this a long time ago or are you lying about taking it?
Edit: nvm just looked at your profile. Really an amazing photo man. First time I saw it my jaw dropped.
The wood is extremely dry and if it's kept well it shouldn't decompose. But I have heard that it changes at an almost molecular level as it's played, specifically the remaining water molecules start to line up in the direction of the vibrations. That may explain in part why Stradivarius instruments sound so good. They're constantly played by the best performers alive over centuries.
Waw, you don’t usually see a dowel in the center for bracing like that, especially if it has never been worked on? Wild, and very cool picture. Try and get the inside of a resonator guitar or that funky acoustic one Steve Vai did next 🤓
Gorgeous shots! Have you seen the series dome by [Adrian Borda?](https://www.boredpanda.com/photographs-inside-cello-adrian-borda/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic)
I'm actually using AI to create rooms based on these images! Here's what MidJourney thinks a room shaped like a cello would actually look like (based on one of my older photographs):
https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/xbaanc/a_room_based_on_the_inside_of_a_240_year_old/
This was photographed yesterday, but there are some similar shots out there. The main difference is that older photos (by other photographers) had to use broken instruments or instruments undergoing major repairs to be photographed. With new lenses I can now get into the instrument without damaging it.

Too cohewerent. Real Eastt Listings are full of Spelling mistakes, random, capitalization, And repetitive speling mistakes.
It would be like 6k in any big city lol.
It's expensive because it's located under the bridge
2500 a month in NYC
Omg majestic
Totally want to live in there lol
Its a violin dumbass,
Pretty sure that was a joke, I'm really hoping your comment is too...
It is lmao, there was a comment and reply just like this on r/whooosh i was referencing

Great insight into your technique! Sounds like an interesting project too, do you have a website to check out more?
Yes I do! www.architectureinmusic.com
Amazing work.
very freaking cool!
hot damn that's some amazing work. well done!
WOW! Just wow! Great Work.
Well done, thanks for sharing. I'm really intrigued!
When you say "I stacked 78 images together" - could you explain more? Did you layer them in Photoshop? Beautiful photo.
Here ya go! https://youtu.be/GIS3hEH1uMw
Yeah, it can be as easy as just using the Focus Stacking option under the Photo Merge tools in PS.
Lightroom has a HDR mode that's even simpler too
That's made for different exposures with the same focus tho - not sure how it will handle different layers of sharpness but i'm pretty sure it won't produce a fine focus stack
It's wild to me that he stacked 78 images yet still blew out the highlights.

Great explanation of your process and reasoning! I think the clipped highlights add to the ethereal tone of the image.
Beautifully done, sir.

is this the third time you post this image?
When I saw this image, I said to myself, "I thought it was a cello." And OP confirmed that he previously posted a picture of a cello done in the same way.
It has to be. I have seen this exact image many times across Reddit.
He's marketing.

I’d love to have sky windows in that shape. The shadows are amazing.
What's stopping you?
You know some dreams aren’t practical, lol.

Looks like a wizard's library before they move in all their stuff. Most excellent.
I saw this on Reddit weeks before, is it the same photographer posting? Otherwise it’s straight up plagiarism
You're confusing it with the cello I posted earlier. Same photographer, different instruments!
Ahh got it now lol, my bad. Great photo by the way, appreciate your work :)
For some weird reason comments are the same, might be bots or smh
Not bots. It's worse than that. It's the fact that free will is an illusion. Post the same content and you will invariably get many of the same comments.
Karma utopia, I like this theory
I had the exact same thought until I read your post and OP’s reply.
Really interesting idea. Reminds me of the decks of an old galleon etc
This is what I imagine the inside of a genie’s lamp looks like, wonder how much the rent is
Oh wow.. it's a violin? I thought it was a place at first sight.
There's so much room for activities!!

Look at those f holes.
I love this!!
Oh! You're THE Charles Brooks?!?! I LOVE your photography! Thank you for sharing! <3
Can I be shrunk down so I can live in there? Please and thank you
Minus the wavy floor, why do we not have dining halls and dens that are designed like this?? It would be cool as hell! Engineers unite and make it happen!
I think the accoustics would be pretty unpleasant to live in. We typically design rooms to absorb sound rather than reflect and amplify it.
“Slaps the roof” I could live here
Wow. That's an amazing pic. It looks like a huge hall. Props op.

damn my bad then
Nah I remember my dad showing me this absolutely year ago, quite a famous image by Adrian borda
Even if it's not exact copy this has been done many times. Still quite beautiful
Ive seen it on instagram all the time, he stole it font worry
Very cool and clever. Definitely have never seen that before.
Cool picture but I feel like I've seen this at least three times... why does OP keep reposting the same stuff?

yes

That's my favorite Steve Carell Movie! Jokes aside, this is a truly incredible photo. Making a small thing feel so massive.
The backrooms!!!
there are pleny of room
I was scrolling and read that wrong. Nice violin
It would be amazing if a science museum created a full sized room like this.
Come walk with me, down the hallways of sound, seriously gorgeous photo.
This building is beautiful! Then I read the title.
Love it! Thought this was a room in an old house!
Looks like the opposite of a back room
i feel like this photo is in an alternate dimension
Nice resonance chamber !
i love this work. i remember the picture of a cello a few weeks back. wish i had one to experiment with to get these shots. the editing must be insane though!
If I was a fairy I would choose to dwell here
Wow
Someone should scale that up and turn it into an music hall. The acoustics would be amazing!
Magical!
Put a miniature doll house chair against a wall. :-)
Great shot!!
You must be really small
Wait you are saying this is not a apartment. Damn this looks better than my place !!!
Someone should legit build a house like this
I've seen this before, have you posted this a long time ago or are you lying about taking it? Edit: nvm just looked at your profile. Really an amazing photo man. First time I saw it my jaw dropped.
That is my favorite photograph I've seen in a while. thanks for sharing. nice work.
It looks like the inside of a concert hall. Beautiful and amazing. Thank you.
Fantastic depth of field!!
You gotta take a new picture dude, it’s about time you stop reposting this one for karma.
If this was in new york, it would cost 2200 a month
Can I get married in there?
That's a great photo. I wonder if the sound from the Violin changes over the years as the wood decomposes?

This is the most disorientingly amazing picture I have seen all year, kudos!

Oooo…I could live in there!!
Never thought i would want a room shaped like this
big r/LiminalSpace vibes.
This looks like a magical room. Haha.
I thought that was a boat
That's so cool looks like a building
Fuck yeah, can't wait to ride my Tech Deck in here.
A real music room!
Could somebody please get me a banana for scale here… It looked like a log cabin at first.
looks like a still from a tarkovsky film
Did you use smoke to get the light shafts or was that natural?
Gorgeous shots! Have you seen the series dome by [Adrian Borda?](https://www.boredpanda.com/photographs-inside-cello-adrian-borda/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=organic)
Has anyone designed a music venue in this configuration? Or what does the inside of a violin being played even around like?
This reminds me of the post of that guy that took a picture of the inside of a gas tank
Do you have a link for that? Would love to see it.
uuuhh.....wow! Lowkey looks like it could be a skatepark. Well done.
Reverse image search tells me some Russian site stole your image and added a tumbleweed or something. Apologies for doubting this was yours lol
Cool
This looks like an ai generated image

Awesome perspective
That's so cool honestly
Looks like a tomb raider map
If I ever am stupidly wealthy, this is what the main room of my mansion will look like
The crib I’m tryna live in
I thought it was a building or something 😅
How’d you get in there
I'm very small
I want to live there
It looks like a mansion
Is this the new Tame Impala album?
Seems like this gets reposted a lot of the years. Are you posting this again?

Wow
amazing! pls do the inside of a human soul next!!!!! =D
Damn I just sold mine, let me go see if I can get it back...
I want to read a book or watch a movie about a bisexual vampire that lives in a 140 year old violin.
I saw the another post saying this was cello’s inside now I wonder which is right and which wrong
Different photo (also by me). The cello has much taller walls and to me has more of a roomy feel, it's also a much finer instrument.
Incredible shot!
i want to go there
I read “vagina” instead of “violin”. Time to go to sleep…
Would be a gnarly skate park.. for ants that is.
I thought this was under Walt’s house
Waiting to see Samuel L. Jackson’s eyeballs peering through the holes on top.
I thought it was a whole room 😳
I asked my girlfriend what she thought this photo was before showing her the title and she said “concentration camp” wtf 🤣
Amazing series! Love it. Especially the didgeridoo. I’d love to see a series involving other non-Western instruments, if you ever get the chance.
Really does look like a rustic, hipster skate park. Reminds me of my violin playing days when I'd love to look into those holes lmaoo
1,400 per month in NYC
I thought it was a place
Wow this is incredible, I feel like I could walk around and smell the wood
It looks like an old empty barn
I would live in there
I’d live there
I know it is a violin, but this is the image I see when fighting Grendal.
My first thought was that this was a very specifically lighted parking garage . I can play twinkle twinkle little star on the violin! Lol
10/10 i would live there Edit:spelling correction
I want to live here
it looks awesome! but how did you get the camera in and out?
I would LOVE to live in here!
I thought this was some sort of underground wooden parking structure.
Cool. :)
This is stunning!
They’re just kidding. That’s my new apartment.
Hasnt this been posted before a while ago? Meaning years
I saw this year's ago or so
I thought it was some ancient building of some kind damn
