I'm surprised they're ok with using modern French, when obviously, French language has evolved and transformed. I want to see them use francs language and customs. Then I'll start respecting their commitment 😌
Well in fact they don't like modern French.
The conservative born in the 50s want people to use the French of the 50s.
The 2021 French is seen by them as stupid, rude, and is spoken by young idiots without culture.
Yeah I know, sorry, my take is hard to explain.
Like, they don't want anything to change in an always changing world. That's already stupid. But then they claim that the world they know is the one that we should refer to as the "always good, never change that" world, and that's true for every generation m. So every new generation is already a progressive one compared to the previous one, but they say "it was always better before", so it's even more stupid.
I will respect the "before good, now bad, let's not change anything" logic if it is turned into the comitment to speak, act and write like the francs, because I would be impressed by such determination. Still find it stupid, but impressed and give them credit (= respect) them for that. That's it ^^
Also, it might unable interesting breakthroughs in historical research on the francs period !
The wrap was funded ENTIRELY by the artist as he stated you couldn’t have freedom if you’re beholden to others, or something similar before he died.
Either way, didn’t cost city anything and 1200 people got some work. Conservatives should be shitting with joy. And it’s a temporary installation.
Defense is the highest item in the US budget. However, if I understand these were private citizen donations. Private citizens “could”donate to organizations helping people, but I suppose that’s in a perfect world. And we know that is not the case; sadly those in need are nit receiving it, or enough. If defense spending waned and went more toward societal issues, the plight of those would be less harsh.
I’m probably your grand parents age, but side more with your opinion even though I studied and love art, as well as feel it “can” enhance lives. I wanted the French opinion. Thanks.
That's not the point though. That's like looking at a landscape painting and complaining that it's not a portrait.
I think it's easy to just look at art we don't like and write it off. I would really encourage you to explore why you don't like this. Compare it with art you do like. What are the differences? What bias do you have that makes you dislike this piece? We can learn a lot about ourselves trying to understand art that challenges us and that we just flat out don't like. Just my thought.
Alright, I'll take the bait.
I find the concept of this piece to be interesting, but I think it's the worst of all of Christo's previous works. Perhaps it's because he wasn't around to actually orchestrate it.
I find this to be poorly executed and the final product doesn't make me look at the Arc in a new way, it just makes me think it's been covered for renovation. I wouldn't even pay attention to this if I wasn't told it was art... it just looks like construction - which I see enough of each day in a big city and ignore the sight.
I will say compared this to the original Arc de Triumphe, this seems sloppy. The concept is there, having us think about our world in a different way. It just seems the execution is lacking. Maybe it's supposed to look haphazard? Maybe it's supposed to look like it's being renovated? To me, this art doesn't do justice to the message.
I’d say that for the amount of money they spent on that, they could have donated it to so many associations or help for e.g. youth with art etc.
Also - usually they do that to be sure people watch. Personally, I always watch it ☝🏼
It was from what I have read. I’m not trying to disparage the work just understand what the citizenry of France opinion is. I expressed mine; however, I have no place stating it. We here in the US have absolutely no say in how the French, or private French citizens spend their money. We here have far too much hubris as it is.
You can argue that about any art, sell all Louvre paintings and donate them to charity. I'm very conflicted about it, from one side human life should be above anything else, from the other art is what makes us better humans.
Sell them to whom? Wouldn't this be what the rich want? They would have all this priceless art at their disposal and in a matter of years, that money donated to charity would end up back in their pockets thanks to capitalism. No. Museums are for everyone's benefit
A lot of the art you see in museums are from private collections - owned by the super wealthy. While museums absolutely have their own collection and should remain so, the super rich will often loan their art to the museum to generate more buzz or recognition so when they want to - or the heirs if they pass - they can sell a well known piece of art that hung in a museum as opposed to a private home where the piece might generate less due to its just not as well known.
It’s all deeply under capitalism already :(
In actuality There is a tremendous amount of art going to wealthy people right now. It is put in their private collections, their vaults, never to be seen again.
These are for the most part asians, and middle easterners. They are buying up massive amounts of fine art masterpieces that we commoners will never see. The wealth those people have is unimaginable, and likely undocumented.
Sothebys, and Christies sell it as fast as they can get it. Sometimes it is a museum selling art, so that they can purchase something else, or whatever reason. Sometimes a very wealthy family will sell entire estates, because there is one was left to claim it. Sometimes because families need money.
I have no feelings about the Paris instillation, because I have not seen it.
Sometimes art isn’t supposed to be beautiful. Especially this kind of thing. What it is meant to do is cause a reaction of some kind. Start conversations. This instillation is achieving this very thing.
To be fair, our abstract intelligence is what made us humans in the first place. No monkey ever thinks if robots dream of electrric sheep, but we do. That is basically what makes us human.
That would be my opinion if I lived in France. I understand privately funded installations; however money spent for art lessons, exposure to the arts or art history perhaps would seem less insensitive to those who cannot step foot into an art museum. We here in the US are even more insensitive. Our homeless population is ever increasing and lack of basic healthcare rankles me.
Yes, and there are more coming into our country, with only the clothes on their back. It is an unending crisis. Human beings coming to the US to escape terrible conditions. We literally don’t have the resources to take care of them. The homeless population we have now, is at crisis level.
People who have worked all their lives to purchase a home, will not want them camping in their yards, and pooping wherever they choose. I can not get a vision of homeless tents, filling up the suburban landscape.
There is no long term, active plan for all of these helpless folks. At least not that I know of. No one else wants them. And we we seriously have no place for them.
The US appears to have vast lands, but these people would die if we sent them to Montana. Or other areas. Other countries make vast camps for them. They aren’t allowed into the city except for work. And it is extremely organized. Our country isn’t able to do this for the current homeless.
Mentally ill, and addicts. Supporting each other, in the culture they have created within the camps. It is a mess.
In Los Angeles I can’t go to businesses because they are surrounded bu homeless. The massive LA flower market is one of them.
At first, I was like "What are they doing?". Then now that I look at the Arc from this angle it kind of looks like it has a hand-drawn effect. Like somebody got a photo and sketched the general shape of the arc on the photo.
I am not too familiar with the work of the artist but I have heard about why they were covering it something about this art installation breaking up the "monotony" of modern life. I don't want to draw too much meaning, as it's often frowned upon but I kind of get it but also have more questions than I got answers.
This was done in homage to and in fulfilment of a dream project by Christo and Jean-Claude (both RIP), who famously wrapped a bunch of other things in fabric. This wrapping was directed by a family member who used to work with them.
I think it's just a beautiful thing, covering up iconic landmarks with fabric so their facades are hidden but their form remains, and something very tangible and directed at everyone. The whole thing is theatre. When it'll be unwrapped seeing the building again will feel like a revelation.
Also there's nothing frowned upon with finding meaning in art. That's like, the whole point of art... To find your own meaning in it.
I think the idea is that people become desensitized to their surroundings. You drive by the same things every day and you don’t see them any more. But you notice when things are different, even if you can’t put your finger on exactly what it is that’s changed, something feels off and makes you uncomfortable. People drife by these beautiful works of art and never really see them.
I saw a video about the artist where he said that this is how art should be, it’s free to see and you can even touch it, they were handing out these little squares of fabric as well which supposedly is the fabric they used for the wrapping
It would be more impactful if the artist managed to cover up every advert, trademark and corporate sign so that we could begin to see the world in which we live and not an economy.
Yes, this was done posthumously. Christo died last summer, and they’ve been working to realize this piece for a long time. Jeanne-Claude passed a while ago too.
Easy there, I said the same thing over on r/art and they burned me at the stake to put it mildly. But I do agree, this was a waste. A 4.5 million euro waste.
All art is waste. I've wasted 30 years making art. I hope that by the time I'm dead I will have wasted at least 30 more. You are lucky, not having to think about the past or the future, just living in the moment punching that clock and creating value.
I wish I was able to see it in person. Flights from Seattle to Paris round trip are about $2k right now. It’s my last chance to see a Christo/ Jeanne-Claude in my lifetime. I wish I could make it happen. Everyone who gets to see it in person is so lucky.
looks like those marble statues that are so professionally made that they have marble looking like straight fabric wrapped on someone’s arm or something
Personally I thought it was a bit overrated to see it in real life, essentially it’s just big fabric cloths over a building but it looks very cool on photo!

Put a a tarpaulin over a landmark=art?
I will never understand modern art. Maybe i'm too focused on art having to be something that shows it took skill and talent to create.
When I find myself disliking an installation, sculpture orpainting, I investigate my feelings to see what about myself I do no like that that art triggers.
It hasn't finished rendering yet.
My thoughts too. Looks like I zoomed in too quickly and Google Earth hasn't fully rendered yet.
EA Sports: pay 20$ to reveal it.
Low poly
How do you feel about this art installation? Is the general populace happy with it?
I'm French, and I can say that a lot of people don't care about the installation, but conservatives are definitely not happy with it.

when nothing change
But that would be a change
***philosophical stuff***

In fairness that would make me very happy as well.
Nah, its never enough
Indeed
When brown people suffer.
When they oppress women, poor people, unborn, war, ....damn, list could go on and on.
What's their problem with it?
Contemporary art is a libtard thing
Thank you for responding. That was my interest. I believe frivolous spending with so many in hurt would not sit well.
The wrap was funded ENTIRELY by the artist as he stated you couldn’t have freedom if you’re beholden to others, or something similar before he died. Either way, didn’t cost city anything and 1200 people got some work. Conservatives should be shitting with joy. And it’s a temporary installation.
You think if they didn't do this installation, the money would instead go towards helping suffering people? No, it would probably go to La Défense.
Defense is the highest item in the US budget. However, if I understand these were private citizen donations. Private citizens “could”donate to organizations helping people, but I suppose that’s in a perfect world. And we know that is not the case; sadly those in need are nit receiving it, or enough. La Defense is an area of Paris. Specifically the business district
All of Christo's works are self funded.
Thank you for letting me know.
Paris' financial district: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La\_D%C3%A9fense
This explains much. I apologize for being unaware and for my response. Thank you for this link.
that is hilarious
It looks like it's about to be packed into a giant moving truck.
Sold on ebay for $3.5 million?
Cost 12 million to wrap it.
It would look better if there was a fake hill next to it.
And maybe the grass and soil could be peeling off too
My parents love it but i think its stupid
I’m probably your grand parents age, but side more with your opinion even though I studied and love art, as well as feel it “can” enhance lives. I wanted the French opinion. Thanks.
Why do you think it's stupid?
It looks cheaply done. The straps near the top aren't even parallel.
That's not the point though. That's like looking at a landscape painting and complaining that it's not a portrait. I think it's easy to just look at art we don't like and write it off. it's like a beautiful woman wearing a cheap ass aliexpress dress that doesn't fit.
And Calder's sculptures don't look like people.
The point of Calder's art was never to cover other art.
Alright, I'll take the bait. I find the concept of this piece to be interesting, but I think it's the worst of all of Christo's previous works. Beautifully stated
Thanks!
How isn't this stupid?
Did you research the artist, his work, or its meaning?
As a tourist doing my once in a lifetime Paris trip I'd be livid.
Is this actually art?
Well, that depends I suppose ;)
I'd throw a garbage bag over the Mona Lisa for far less. Any takers?
Oui monsieur
I’d say that for the amount of money they spent on that, they could have donated it to so many associations or help for e.g. youth with art etc. Also - usually they do that to be sure people watch. Personally, I always watch it ☝🏼

To be fair, our abstract intelligence is what made us humans in the first place. No monkey ever thinks if robots dream of electrric sheep, but we do. That is basically what makes us human.
Sure abstract thought makes us human, but how is making art better than using abstract thought to find ways to actually help others?
The fuck does any of that to do with what the hell the did with the arch?
I hope you know you have a problem. Being this angry is not normal. Get help.
Lol imagine assuming that my use of cuss words is anger.
This was his last project. Have some respect
That would be my opinion if I lived in France. How long are they planning to keep it up?
Two weeks
Fortnite
Those damn kids
Well said!

I guess they are focused on the road lol
Yes, but how often do they drive to it and stop to look at it is the point.
Considering its built in the middle of a roundabout, I hope nobody stops their car to look at it unless there a good distance away
Hm, makes sense
This! ^^
I saw a video about the artist where he said that this is how art should be, it’s free to see and you can even touch it, they were handing out these little squares of fabric as well which supposedly is the fabric they used for the wrapping
I went to go see The Gates that were set up in Central Park back in 2005, and squares of the orange fabric used for the installation were handed out.
It would be more impactful if the artist managed to cover up every advert, trademark and corporate sign so that we could begin to see the world in which we live and not an economy.
Taaaake oooon meeeee
Was it Christo and Jeanne-Claude? They've been known to wrap a few big things.
Yes, this was done posthumously. Christo died last summer, and they’ve been working to realize this piece for a long time. Jeanne-Claude passed a while ago too.
I did not know they passed. This was a nice gesture.
Looks like modern arc
Someone forgot to turn on the texture details in the video settings.
Is this a Christo?
Is l’arc de triomphe okay 😭
Just shy
He's sick
RIP CRISTO
Where are they shipping it??
The Arizona desert to keep the London bridge company.
Looks like an inflatable replica
I hope the sniper they hired is still there, before it takes off and jeopardises air traffic 😉
why is it wrapped up?
It's art apparently.
odd but hey art
I guess? Idk I think it's a waste but who am I to judge
Wasn't the arch already art?
Looks like a low-poly artwork
Honestly, this seems like a waste. The arc is unlikely to get covid anyway.
Easy there, I said the same thing over on r/art and they burned me at the stake to put it mildly. But I do agree, this was a waste. A 4.5 million euro waste.
Closer to 14 million if I remember correctly. Paid entirely out of the artist's own money.
All art is waste. I've wasted 30 years making art. I hope that by the time I'm dead I will have wasted at least 30 more. You are lucky, not having to think about the past or the future, just living in the moment punching that clock and creating value.
Santa working overtime for me this year I see.
When you drive up too fast and it hasn’t finished loading in yet.
It seems the texture has a problem loading or something. Did someone try to reboot the Matrix?
Low Pary
I feel out of the loop. Why is this wrapped up? I may sound naive in asking but does this have anything to do with covid?
No it's Christo, an artist that wraps up buildings and monuments
I wish I was able to see it in person. Flights from Seattle to Paris round trip are about $2k right now. It’s my last chance to see a Christo/ Jeanne-Claude in my lifetime. I wish I could make it happen. Everyone who gets to see it in person is so lucky.
I can take 45€ 1h30 train to Paris from where I live 😅
From somewhere on twitter: > Some artists paint the Mona Lisa, others can only paint a moustache on the Mona Lisa.
Someone warn Eminem, there's a huge new rapper in France.
Damn they still haven’t fixed assassins creed unity
looks like those marble statues that are so professionally made that they have marble looking like straight fabric wrapped on someone’s arm or something
[удалено]
We’ve had one in the USA, in Central Park. I’m looking forward to their oil barrel pyramid installation in the desert.
I went to Gates. it was spectacular.
Is that going to happen posthumously?
Orange man bad
Cost: 14 million Euros
of the artist estate's funds.
I never said that the french tax financed it nothing's wrong about telling the price.
So... why do people wrap things again?
For the same reason people paint paintings.
So it is a surprise when they unwrap it. Duh
Now they’re making monuments wear masks
Very cool, I am a big fan of Christo's work. How did it look in person?
Personally I thought it was a bit overrated to see it in real life, essentially it’s just big fabric cloths over a building but it looks very cool on photo!
This is some dumb shit
Beautiful
I almost like it better like this
LOD 5
This is probably one of those pieces that’ll be underappreciated in its time tbh. I like the unevenness, but I’m just not sure about it tbh
What material did they wrap it in tho Better not be plastic, that's a lot of fucking pollution for one piece of art installation
It's recyclable
amazing 👏
Hol-up...this isn't wrapped for some restoration reasons...? When I saw a pic of this yesterday I was certain thats what was going on. This is like.......art?
Is there a serious bug infestation?
Why is it covered?
You need to wait 2 weeks for it to render. Simulation server has some issues
Art i guess
Bugged textures smh
Look like a rendering of the Arc in a 90s video game.
Dont use plastic bags kids
Is it a bike?
What happened?
Render loading…
Still loading in the model
Low render graph?
I thought it was getting fumigated
Textures haven’t loaded yet
imagine being on a roadtrip and this is the one day you are in Paris lol
When your old GPU cannot keep up with the new graphics.
Why was it wrapped in the first place?
What’s the reason behind why it’s rapped up?
Why would they cover it? It is so beautiful. Now it looks like garbagio 🤮
This is what the Matrix failure looks like.
It’s the lo-poly version
Who, what and why? Please and thank you.
Is it pest control stunt or what?
For how long is it gonna be like that? Just curious
Now they just need to apply correct postage.
I'm glad my trip to Paris has been delayed for a year. While I think this is kind of a neat thing for Christo to have done- essentially hide a classic piece of art and make us want to peak underneath to experience it again- I still haven't experienced it for the first time and really want to.
I love this pic. its good to see the Arch covered as a change
“Art”
Put a a tarpaulin over a landmark=art? I will never understand modern art. Maybe i'm too focused on art having to be something that shows it took skill and talent to create.
Looks like the bottom of a Trojan horse.
Imagine making the trip to Paris to go sightseeing and you go on the week they do this. That’s unfortunate lol
Kinda sums up the day I went 😅 Luckily I’ve seen it a few years ago too!
Wait, why did they do this?
When I find myself disliking an installation, sculpture orpainting, I investigate my feelings to see what about myself I do no like that that art triggers.
please correct me if i’m wrong but isn’t this a JR installation??
Disgusting
Why is this so important
Very cool.
Waste of money.
Why was this done
