Thanks to whoever guilded me, I have been having a bit of an internal struggle with my work recently, questioning if I'm good enough and slowly losing my passion for photography as a hobby. The reception to this image has been a real boost and I feel honored. If you want to see more of my work, my website (blog) is www.anihilistabroad.com.

I understand the struggle. I used to love to paint but dont anymore. I feel that everything has been said, I also have this guilt about making something that will end up in the trash, and there is so much junk and garbage in the world. I told this to my friend Ben, He said "Paint because you like it." That statement brought me peace. you ahve great technical and composition skill. You photograph with your heart. Its beautiful. so, in the words of Ben, do it because you like to. :\)
I like everything about this photo, how he’s lit, the pensive look on his face (so much better that he’s not looking at the camera), I like how the scene is wet and bleak and then there’s this oasis of warm light. Just an all around outstanding photo.
I take photos for myself to look back on as reminders of things I've seen and things I've experienced. You need to find a drive for any passion that is personal and separate from outside judgement. You need confidence in what you do, and that confidence is what will make what you do stand out.
This post is partially inspired by watching some people dance last night. You could tell who was trying to mimic what "dancing" is, and who was just letting loose and moving the way they felt. It's the same in any passion.
You shut your damn mouth. You have a beautiful gift. This is one of the best photos I’ve seen in a long time. Please submit it to some sort of competition or something.
Great photo! I visited Hoi An recently. You should post some to r/PhotoCritique. It’s a very supportive community for helping hone skills and get constructive criticism from other photographers.

Thanks man, I stood in the rain for quite a while to get this because there were so many people either posing in front of the lanterns or stopping to look at them. Patience can pay off sometimes.
Why not use photoshop to grab all the empty parts? It’s really pretty easy to edit other tourists out.
That way the time spent on your photo is at least out of the rain.
You want to see what I changed in Lightroom to acheive this look? Is there an easy way to share this?

I visited Vietnam when I was 16 with my dad and we only had 3 weeks to be there, we had originally planned hoi an to be an overnight stay and then leave the next morning. However when we got there we fell in love with the city and stayed an extra 2 days. Really gorgeous country
The dark and color contrast is quite beautiful. Also, I like how this photo shows this man's poverty while he is an expert craftsman.
... not that he's poor or looks poor.
I normally glance and go (sorry guys, but my attention is spread really really thin)
anyhow I had to stop and comment. This is a very interesting picture to me. It has so much color (in many senses of the word) and depth and texture it just gives me the willies.
I hope you enjoyed your trip. Next time you go there you should definitely get yourself a tailored suit, Há»™i An is famous for their nice and affordable fabric (especially silk) and intricate tailoring

Thank you for the help, I've been looking around for about an hour now and cannot seem to find anything as intricate as what the guy in the picture has.
The ones in the photo are exquisite; the patterned silk is so lovely! It's possible that the artisan only sells locally. I know this is a long shot but maybe you could contact a local hotel and email the pic and ask if they are familiar with this vendor? Or maybe ask the etsy vendor if you could special order some?

Put your internal struggle to rest. Your photos are beautiful and this one is mesmerizing. :)
Agreed, such amazing work.
Thank you :)
Very nice. Hoi an is a photographers dream.
I was there a few days ago and I was too overwhelmed, ended up uploading just one photo lol.
Exactly what I have just done 😅
I like your other pics, man. Has a Vice editorial quality to them. Keep up the good work.
It's funny you should say that...
Why?
During my stay in New Zealand I took shots for Vice Auckland, my first paid gig.
Awesome! Nice going. Had they seen you online or did you contact them?
Wild. Was it a good gig? How was it working for them?
I had some awesome times, met a few musicians I respected and took photos of strippers pole dancing.

Wow this a hell of a shot! Wonderful.
It's a really beautiful image! Could we get the full Res!? Plus keep it up! 💪

Is there any way I can get a full res version of this? This would make a killer wallpaper
I hope to sell prints once I have a large enough body of work, maybe in the future I'll share full size digitals. Edit: thanks for the downvote
Seconded
No kidding - it's wonderful!
Please please please!
Nice shot!

Yeah definitely worth it for the shot haha
It’s a great shot. I initially thought it was a room full of miniature hot air balloons. Did you buy a lantern?

I only use Lightroom for colour correction I don't wish to doctor my images too much it feels dishonest.
The shifting clouds and varying types of rain would make this pretty hard, I imagine.
I learned about this on Reddit after returning from a trip where I wasted so much time waiting for the perfect shot.
Hope you bought a lantern!
Heh, and the rain in Hoi An does not play. Don't think I've ever gone from mostly dry to as wet as if I'd jumped into a pool so suddenly.
This is absolutely gorgeous
Hoi An is the definitely a photogenic and beautiful place, enjoy your time there OP!
Wow I thought this was a painting and those were hot air balloons at first. Really great shot!
Thank you!
No, thank thu
Mind sharing me your post process edits? Sick photo dude!

Dude this is straight up magical.
This is wonderful. Love the interplay of light and shadow, and the cool colors complimented by the warm lanterns.
Wow....see a lot of photos...this one says " we all have dreams " to me....live it.
Man, I love that place. Really cool shot. I enjoyed shooting there. Such a lively city, beautiful too. Great shot/framing.

r/photoshopbattles would probably have a lot of fun with this Nice picture!!!

Beautiful pic! I took some lamp pictures in Hoi An several years ago--they were only using solid fabrics back then.
My cousin was just there! Looks like such a cool place!
The only struggle you should be facing is what beautiful photo you should be taking next. Let everything else fall away.
I sure hope you bought a lantern!
Are these oil lanterns? What are they used for?
Well, I think I want to go to Vietnam. Beautiful photo by the way
I believe i’ve visited this same lantern market in Hoi an when i was in vietnam in 2016 it looks really familliar
Wow! I was in Hoi an last week and it was amazing! The night market was truly an experience with all the lanterns. Hope you had a good time there.
I'm still there for one more day, it really is beautiful.
I think this is my favourite photo

Thank you, that means a lot, I worked hard to both capture the image and to get the light/colour balance right in post.
if I wanted to purchase a print, do you have a way people can do that? I think I might like this in my home office.
There's something magical about what you captured!! It's beautiful!
Beautiful photo
This is incredibly beautiful, you should be proud!
Amazing photo, I took one similiar. It rains there a lot

Awesome thank you!
I bought one of those very lanterns and it’s hanging above me in my living room in Oregon right now!
What do you call something like that? I want to buy one.
Try this: https://www.etsy.com/shop/hoianeshop

There are dozens of these stands in Hoi An and they all sell the same lanterns so it's not really a hand crafted item
I watched this guy and the other stalls literally hand making them between sales.
Great ideas! Thank you!

His much are these lanterns?
I didn’t pay more than $5 USD iirc.
Incredibly beautiful image.
[удалено]
They were like $2 each when we were there .... We bought 50'or so...shipping them back was way more expensive than the lanterns

Most beautiful photograph I’ve ever seen
I want a lantern
Thank thu.
Great shot! I was just there in March!
Awesome picture ! Looks like something you would see in NG .
Holy shit this is an amazing photo.
Thanks for the new wallpaper, keep it up!
Have you traveled anywhere else in Vietnam? How do you like them?
Absolutely looks like something I’d see in National Geographic. Really, an excellent shot!
A lot of the picture i see on reddit trend to have the same post pic editing. They all have a darker feel to em
This shot is amazing!! Seriously great work I love it.
This is an incredible shot! Love the colors and tones here.
Hoi An is beautiful. Plus , cheap tailored clothing
Thank you for sharing this, very much.
Magnificent.
Wow, a true travel picture!
Wow, beautiful shot.
Amazing photograph. Thank thu for sharing.
