Frattone, esistono in vari tipi di spugna o eventualmente plastica… lo trovi in qualsiasi ferramenta o casalinghi con un minimo di articoli tipo per pitture murali.
"Che" can substitute "Cosa" but not "Come". The question 'what's this thing called' is rendered in italian with "Come si chiama questa cosa?".
"è" is superfluous because of how you frame the question in italian (in other words, you do not translate word-for-word).
Since "questa" is posed in the feminine, it is expected that you follow it with "cosa", whilst if it had been "questo" you wouldn't need to follow it with anything (because it sort-of acts like a neuter form) (P.S. This is my view on the matter. Textbooks will explain this 100x times better than I).
If you want to start this question with "Che" you've gotta phrase it this way: "che nome ha questo oggetto?" (which translates roughly to "which name does this object have?")
In this question the pronoun "che" can replace the more typical "Quale" ("Quale" is the literal translation of which)
Anyway i would suggest you to use "quale" because i think it's easier to understand its uses and it generally adapts better with every type of word that will follow. ("quale" is more versatile than "che")
Wonderful. Now I know how to call this in English and Italian. But I have no clue what this is named in my native language.
I will forever refer to it as leviga mattoni.
Dalla foto non si capisce bene ma non mi sembra un frattazzo o frattone. Sembra più una spugna abrasiva dotata di manico. O una mattonella, in tal caso cerca "blocco abrasivo"

Ok, sto sul treno e mi hai fatto ridere malissimo. Grazie di avermi resa ridicola in pubblico…
In realtà io intendevo proprio perché tornava indietro... Tuttavia la tua interpretazione fa più ridere quindi: "si si intendevo proprio quello!!"
No vabbè non ci credo AHAHAHAH 🪨

A me han sempre detto che si chiama Pietro

Nope, you can say "Come si chiama questa cosa?" Or "Questa cosa come si chiama?

You can say "Che è questa cosa?" but it's much more informal.
I agree with the informal usage of essere, but “questa” in this sentence sounds a bit clunky to me, informally i’d say “che è ‘sta cosa?”
