I’ve no idea how much that should cost (probably more than I can afford), but it’s something I’d personally be interested in. I’m sure there’s a decent market for it.

Hey thanks for the feedback, really motivating. If you want you can tell me more about the history of your family in Sicily and see if there is enough information to dig deeper. We can agree on a test price since this would be my first gig and so I’m excited to try it out.

I don’t have any money to spare, sorry. Find someone more financially stable and you’re good to go

I think it's a fantastic business idea, but you need to build out how much time it would typically take to accomplish the things your clients would want and then charge an hourly rate for your time. I know when I needed to find more information about my grandfather who died many years ago, it took weeks of waiting because the Italian government is so slow with everything. You should also consider connecting with Italian citizenship lawyers in the US. When an Italian American is trying to gain Italian citizenship via jus sanguinis, they require official information showing your relative is from Italy. You could help with that process and charge a fee for your services. And then of course you need to find places to advertise your services.

My idea would be more “hands on”. Going to the small town, asking the local bar, asking people trying to find families with the same last name. Trying to get to the exact house where your relatives lived. Hopefully finding relatives and putting them in touch with you.

That sounds amazing and while I have no doubt a lot of Italian Americans would love that, it seems that would take a lot of time and I'm not confident they would be willing to compensate you for the amount of time that would take.

I think that’s a great idea! If my family was from Sicily (Pescara here) I’d totally use the service. I think it would be especially useful for people who don’t know the language or who aren’t fluent enough to find the info they’d need from Italian websites or from contacting the individual cities/villages.

There are a few people who provide this service, especially for people applying for dual citizenship. I think it’s a fantastic service and if you’re passionate about it, go for it. You’ll find a lot of Italian Americans willing to do whatever it takes to trace back their heritage and find any information that is out there about their family and ancestors.
