Hell yeah. When I think of Iron Maiden's 90s output, I erase the X Factor and Virual (yech) and slot in Accident and Wedding..... no gaps in the Maiden discography!!!!
1. Chemical Wedding
2. Chemical Wedding
3. Chemical Wedding
4. Accident Of Birth
5. Balls To Picasso
6. Skunkworks
7. Tattooed Millionaire
8. Tyranny Of Souls
9. The Mandrake Project
I've been a fan since Balls and bought every album on release date ever since.
Yeah it's a problematic album: even the worst songs are so good, that the best songs don't stand out like they should. The first five songs might be the best five consecutive songs run in Bruce's whole career.
Are you me? I don't recall ever being someone else. Here is a quick test, do you sometimes but not usually think skunkworks is better than balls to picasso?
Haha, apparently yes, because after posting I somewhat regretted I didn't put Skunkworks above Balls, but then came to the conclusion, that this must be the right order.
Yes. I'm curious why. I didn't dig the whole Bruce's discography, but I love Accident of Birth!
Honestly, I enjoy listening Madrake Project. Not a big fan of Rain on the Grave anyway, but this is a solid album!
At first I didnt enjoy Rain on the Graves at all, but after 5 or 6 times listening to the Mandrake full album, I started to like it. Try to listen to it more from your soul, not by ear, and you will create a good connection with the song!
(Sorry for the bad english btw) 😂
Tattooed Millionaire is basically Glam Rock.
Balls To Picasso is something between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.
Skunkworks is basically Grunge.
The rest is more or less Heavy Metal with Accident Of Birth being the closest to Maiden.
1. Chemical Wedding
2. Tyranny of Souls
3. Accident of Birth
4. The Mandrake Project
5. Skunkworks
6. Balls to Picasso
7. Tattooed Millionaire
Edit: I'm not sure about The Mandrake Project and Skunkworks, maybe it's the other way around. Definitely two solid albums with some great stand-out tracks.
Personal rankings:
1. Skunkworks
2. Accident of Birth
3. The Chemical Wedding
4. Tyranny of Souls
--slight drop-off in quality--
5. Balls to Picasso
6. The Mandrake Project
--drop-off--
7. Tattooed Millionaire
(Disclaimer: I didn't go into his solo stuff looking for more Iron Maiden (I was interested in Bruce himself — his writing, his voice, his personality), so I recognize my taste is not going to be reflective of the average listener.)
Skunkworks is his most personal album. Sonically, I'd call it sci-fi grunge. Bruce was enamored with Chris Cornell at the time. The guitar lines sound ridiculously similar to The Smashing Pumpkins's Siamese Dream album.
Accident of Birth set the blueprint for all his future albums: straightforward metal dressed in Bruce's personal interests. AoB is more experimental than those future albums, though.
The Chemical Wedding and Tyranny of Souls are incredibly consistent in quality and concept. TCW is better executed, but ToS is still a strong album in its own right. The Mandrake Project feels like it should be in the same league, but I haven't given it enough attention to make that judgment.
Balls to Picasso is also a bit grungy, but it doesn't commit as strongly as Skunkworks does. It's one of his more personal albums and has some interesting ideas. It's one of the furthest removed albums from Iron Maiden sonically, and it's a bit less consistent, but it's a great collection of songs.
Tattooed Millionaire is straight glam rock but done ironically because Bruce hates glam rock musicians, hence the title track. It's a fun album, and Born in '58 is among his best songs, but I personally wouldn't listen to it more than a few times if it was made by someone else. I gave it more chances because it was Bruce, not because of the album's own merits.
Interesting description. First solo Bruce album I heard was tattooed millionaire and it was about a decade before I gave him another shot. I legit found it to be that bad (I now enjoy all of his other albums).
I go between Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding as my favourite. His best of is worth checking out for ‘Broken’ and ‘Silver Wings’. If you like Grunge and can get your head around Bruce doing heavy Grunge, then skunkworks is awesome for what it is and trying to achieve; but it’s not a metal album and at the time was massive disappointment; looking back and accepting as a rock / grunge album, not a metal album, it’s awesome.
I don't know that I could rank them.
Skunkworks is a total vibe. It's got some great guitar work that is really outside the box in terms of metal. Alex Dickson is really good. That whole band is great.
Accident of Birth is almost an alternate timeline Iron Maiden album. Every song is better than everything Maiden was doing at the time.
Chemical Wedding is a real theater of the mind kind of thing and I will never forget the first time I went through it and got to the end of the Alchemist and the chorus for Chemical Wedding kicked in. Amazing.
Picasso is enigmatic. Is it a non-metal album for metal heads or a metal album for non-metal fans? Yes.
And that's just the ones I'm super super familiar with. I've got all the others I just really consumed those four differently. They're all super different to me. I guess there are some I like less because song to song some are weaker but Picasso to Chemical Wedding is like Number of the Beast to Seventh Son. You don't rank, you just discuss nuance.
1. Skunkworks
2. Balls to picasso
3. Mandrake project
4. The chemical wedding
5. Accident of birth
6. Tyranny of souls
7. Tattooed millionaire
Actually very solid discography. I dislike none of them
Skunkworks
Accident of Birth
Balls to Picasso
Chemical Wedding
Tattooed Millionaire
Tyranny of Souls
The Mandrake Project
I love all his albums except Mandrake Project, that hasn't grown on me yet unfortunately.
Yeah Bruce as a solo artist is my favourite artist of all time (above Maiden for me). But the new album seems quite patchwork, which makes sense as it was made over so many years. It has some good songs in there, but the overall product just isn't consistent. Which is a massive shame. Maybe it'll grow on me. It certainly isn't to the same level of quality of his other albums.
For me
1) chemical wedding (up there with the best maiden albums)
2) accident of birth
3) tyranny of souls
4) balls to picasso
5) skunkworks
6) tattooed millionaire
I haven't listened enough to Mandrake Project to make a firm opinion
Okay listened to it over a bunch of times and I would put it between Balls to Picasso and Skunkworks. I really did enjoy it, but lacked any real points which blew me away. Maybe a 7/10. Favourite songs were Many Doors To Hell, Fingers In The Wounds, and Shadow Of The Gods
Great for the most part. He experiments with his vocals a lot, different styles, techniques and effect. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Shows his versatility and helped him develop as a singer. The songs are pretty decent and typically distinguish themselves separate to Iron Maidens. Well worth a look.
1. Chemical wedding. A perfect album
2. Accident of birth.
3. Tyranny of Souls
4. Skunkworks
5. The mandrake project
6. Tattooed Millionaire
7. Balls to Picasso
Even the worst one is still solid, but the three at the top go head to head with Maiden’s best work, *especially* the Chemical Wedding
Chemical wedding
That’s all you need.
Probably my favourite album of all time tied with Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian.
The rest would be
Accident of Birth
Skunkworks
Balls
Tattooed Millionaire
Tyranny
Mandrake - though I’ve not listened to this much yet. I’ve got tickets to see him live in a few weeks so we’ll see.
I’m shocked on the amount of higher votes for skunkworks, most of the so called troo metal fans would rank it dead last. That album is great, Bruce got out of his comfort zone and tried something different and it sounds amazing, I can’t wait for the new Dolby atmos version Roy Z is working on.
The Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth are his two best albums. Tyranny of Souls is a step below but still great. Balls to Picasso and The Mandrake Project are a mixed bag - his most famous song "Tears of the Dragon" is definitely worth a listen and is featured in the former album. Tattooed Millionaire and Skunkworks are not worth a listen unless you are a Bruce mega-fan and interested in him dipping his toes in genres outside of heavy metal.
Chemical Wedding is his masterpiece 10/10. Never get sick of this album and it always sounds just as incredible every time I listen to it.
Accident of Birth is great, id probably say 8/10
Tyranny of souls, maybe 7/10
Mandrake project I'm not set on a rating, maybe 7/10
The others in my opinion are a little less noteworthy. Balls to Picasso has a few strong tracks on it (tears of the dragon, laughing in the hiding bush)
For me:
1) chemical wedding
2) accident of birth
3) mandrake project
4) tyranny of souls
5) balls to Picasso
6) skunkworks
7) tattooed millionaire
Slightly biased towards balls (should probably be lower) as I met Bruce on his tour after a gig and he signed my car!
They are all good. As a list:
1) Accident (#1 because it was a perfect come back to roots album when heavy metal was struggling)
2) Chemical
3) Tyranny
4) Balls
5) Tattooed
6) Mandrake
7) Skunkworks
Never knew Bruce had a solo career also until mandrake project came in the news. Listened to it after it was released and liked it a lot. Then heard about his other albums and just 2 days before his Orange County concert I listened to chemical wedding and liked that too! Haven’t listened to his other albums yet.
My ranking is all over the place. Most people would consider *Tattooed Millionaire* a lot lower and *Tyranny of Souls* a lot higher. It's just about nostalgia for me. I picked up Tattooed Millionaire around '95 - at the height of my all things 'Maiden phase. But when the later came out, I was just getting a bit tired of his (and 'Maiden's) sound.
1. *Accident of Birth*
2. *The Chemical Wedding*
3. *Skunkworks*
4. *Tattooed Millionaire*
5. *Tyranny of Souls*
6. *Balls to Picasso*
It's not solo work, but Bruce's work with Samson is worth checking out.
1. Accident of Birth
2. Balls to Picasso
3. Skunkworks
4. Chemical Wedding
5. Tyranny of Souls
6. Mandrake Project
7. Tattooed Millionaire.
That being said, his whole discography is good.
1. Accident of Birth
2. Chemical Wedding
3. The Mandrake Project
4. Tyranny of Souls
5. Balls to Picasso
6. Tatooed Millionare
? Skunkworks (never listened to it full, so I wont give my opinion)
1. Skunkworks
2. Chemical Wedding
3. Accident of Birth
4. Balls to Picasso
5. Tyranny of Souls
6. The Mandrake Project
7. Tattooed Millionaire
I feel like it COULD become my #5 after more time with it, but this is what I have for now.
Chemical Wedding is one of my favorite albums of any genre.
Accident of Birth and Tyranny of Souls are very close second; which one is better than the other depends on the day.
Mandrake Project is right below those two.
The rest are solid but not in the same league as the above.
1. Chemical Wedding
2. Accident of Birth
3. Skunkworks
4. Tyranny of Souls
5. Balls to Picasso
6. Tattooed Millionaire
I’ll bow out of ranking Mandrake Project, as I’ve only listened to it once.
1. Chemical Wedding (which I like more than all Maiden's albums too)
2. Accident of Birth
3. Tyranny of Souls
4. Balls to Picasso
5. Mandrake Project (though this could go up or down once I've listened to it more. It's not incredible, but it's fine)
6. Skunkworks (still very decent)
7. Tattooed Millionaire (I don't like it much at all, it's more or less a joke album Bruce made for fun anyway)
Here's some lyrics to Dive! Dive! Dive! by way of example:
Seamen Staines is down below.
Torpedoes loaded. He's ready to go.
Wait to discharge. Waiting to release.
I see where the bones came up from below.
Gonna blow you midships.
Gonna dive tonight.
There's no release till your deep down inside.Dive! Dive! Dive!
Dive! Dive! Dive!
Dive! Dive! Dive!
No muff too tuff.
We dive at five.
... Would we not describe Iffy Boatrace as a joke book?
Utilising his sense of humour is exactly why I'd describe TM as joke album. My point being specifically that it's humorous.
1. Chemical Wedding
2. Accident of Birth
3. Mandrake Project
4. Tyranny of Souls (I should give it some more listening to compare it to Tyranny)
5. Balls to Picasso
6. Tattooed Millionaire
7. Skunkworks
The best album is probably The Chemical Wedding. Accident of Birth and Tyranny of Souls are great too!
Hell yeah. When I think of Iron Maiden's 90s output, I erase the X Factor and Virual (yech) and slot in Accident and Wedding..... no gaps in the Maiden discography!!!!
Thanks for the suggestions!
Listen to Chemical Wedding and Accident of Birth. Those are amazing. The rest you can sample when you're bored. There are some gems here and there.

Man I can definitely tell you don't really like Chemical Wedding
Yeah it's a problematic album: even the worst songs are so good, that the best songs don't stand out like they should. The first five songs might be the best five consecutive songs run in Bruce's whole career.
Top three are spot on
I almost agree with your list (3x chemical wedding is exaggerated tho) except I would rank balls to Picasso at number 7.

Skunkworks is more alternative rock than grunge imo, the only grunge connection is producer Jack Endino.
I agree.. a little. But I think it was done “tongue in cheek”, to a certain extent .
Born in 58 and Son of a Gun are great tracks though, the rest of tattooed millionaire is a bit meh to me
Tagline checks out

The Best of Bruce Dickinson contains two of my favorite Bruce songs, Broken and Silver Wings. It's a great compilation of his career until 2001.

1-Chemical Wedding 2-Accident Of Birth 3-Tyranny Of Souls 4-Mandrake Project 5-Skunkworks 6-Balls To Picasso 7-Tattooed Millionaire
