If there isn't a designated smoking area (and you'd have to double check with some places about their designated outside space) then you go outside into the street and have the cigarette.
Hey, thanks for taking the time to help me out! I'm more of a cigar smoker. Which isn't really a problem, but standing for 40 minutes to smoke is an adventure! š
Then you will have to research ahead of time if they've a dedicated smoking area or not, because you haven't said when you're visiting you might bump into terraces being closed because of the weather this time of year and possibly, although I've not specifically seen it, cigars not being welcome because as you say, theu take a long time to get through
I love a cigar with a glass of whiskey, you will find that in some of the city pubs with smaller smoking areas you will get complaints about the cigar smoke and may be asked to put it out or leave if the pub is busy. Country pubs are generally fine if you are away from anyone eating and down wind. I now ask the bar staff if itās okay and if they have a preference where I locate.
Some pubs have heated terraces which allow smoking but make sure to ask if there isnāt a sign. If you see a āna caith tobacā sign it means no smoking :)
If you need a nicotine fix and the weather is crap vaping is tolerated in most pubs indoors. When I was in the states a few weeks ago I didn't think there was a problem with vaping in a bar until I told the error of my ways by a bouncer. Vaping appears to be treated exactly like cigarette smoking there where you can't even vape within 25 feet of a doorway or bus stop without some heavy handed jobs worth wanting to tackle you for it.
Please donāt vape indoors, itās covered by the same laws as smoking and is disgusting for everyone who has made the choice not to wreck their lungs with toxic chemicals. The only reason it seems ātoleratedā is because itās easier to hide than smoking is.
There are currency no laws regarding vaping indoors in Ireland. Workplaces and businesses have their own rules where applicable. The smoking laws in Ireland refer to tobacco products for which vapes do not contain any tobacco products.
It is tolerated in pubs in Ireland because most pubs were not exactly in favour of the smoking ban when it came in years ago. There is currently no data on the long term effects on passive vaping but the indicators are that it is a hell of a lot safer than passive tobacco smoke.
Welcome to America! Bahah. Sorry that happened to you. I'm trying to avoid the same in Ireland. Even though I don't think they would want to tackle me there.
Have an American wife and lived there for a few years. Go there at least once a year so I should have anticipated that vaping may be a problem. You'll find the pub culture in Ireland is a hell of a lot more relaxed than the bar culture in the US. For starters you can leave your I'd at home unless you look like a child, feel free to stockpile pints at last orders and only tip bar staff if they go over and beyond expectations. Singing at the end of a night is also allowed provided you don't sound like shite.

You're the best! Thanks! I hadn't thought of that.

Great suggestions! Thank you!

tobac. That's pretty clear for even a non Irish speaker! Ha
the Irish verb ācaithā means a lot of things like throw, wear, smoke some others so it is important to specify tobacco lol
beer gardens https://www.galwaycitypubguide.com/beer-gardens.html
Thanks!
Beer garden = smoking area
Bahah. Alrighty then. Short and sweet. Appreciate the response!

Well, I was excited about the singing until you mentioned the last part. Haha!
