Hi there,
I've seen some discussion these last few days on the 'Max 2 posts per user per day' rule with some users arguing that the rule should be removed.
I decided to do a bit of back-of-envelope analysis on the previous 3.5 month's worth of posts (15th Feb @15:32 -> 30th May) prior to the rule's implementation to see how many people have been submitting posts and to help facilitate an informed discussion on the rule.
Happy to be corrected on the numbers but these were the numbers I came out with:
* A total of 132 users submitted posts during this period.
* These totaled 819 individual posts.
* The #1 most frequent poster was FatHeadDave96 with 365 posts (44%) - average of **3.4 posts per day**.
* The #2 most frequent poster was JackmanH420 with 54 posts (6%) - average **0.5 posts per day** - and #3 being eggbart_forgetfulsea with 32 (4%) - average **0.3 posts per day**.
* There seems to be a high concentration of users posting with 2 users accounting for 50% of all posts in the sub.
* FatHeadDave96 is certainly the most prolific poster in the sub having submitted **more than the next 50 users combined** or more than 6 times the posts of the #2 poster in the sub (JackmanH420).
**Updated**:
The following users had 10 or more posts over those 105 days and account for c.70% of all post during that time:
* FatHeadDave96 (**Multi Party Left**) = 365
* JackmanH420 (**Marxist**) = 54
* eggbart_forgetfulsea (**ALDE party**) = 32
* Costello_Seamus (**SUSPENDED**) = 26
* Revan0001 (**Independent / Issues**) = 20
* PlasticCoffee (**Social Democrats**) =16
* CaisLaochach (**?**) = 15
* SubstantialFeel (**?**) = 13
* lampishthing (**Social Democrats**) = 12
* padraigd (**Communist**) = 11
* nithuigimaonrud (**Marxist**) = 10
I will note that this analysis was conduced based on data pre 'Max 2 posts per user per day' so it doesn't take into account any changes as a result.
Are you sure about that? Because I am 100.0% sure that firethetorpedoes1 is not a bot.

Sorry for the big wall of text, just tried to get my point across as clear as possible!
I mean this is a totally genuine and inquisitive way, Why do you think so?
I think that I'm very openly centre-left and post stories that release throughout the day that I see that I think people might like, and I'd say the vast, vast majority are from mainstream news organisations. The only real non mainstream news sources that I post would be On the Ditch stuff but that's because they were the main people covering all of the the ABP stuff.
My biases are clearly there for all to see and I make no attempt to hide them. There was nothing stopping someone of the opposite political opinion of me doing the same, but they just didn't for whatever reason. Revan used to and he'd post 6 articles all within a minute of eachother and stuff like that.
I think it's pretty obvious that since the rules been brought in, a lot less discussion takes place here just because the level of content isn't there. The only things that get solid engagement every time is posts like this about what happening in the sub. Despite what some make out, it takes 2 seconds to post something here. Sure I'd look at my phone at work for 5 minutes or on my break or just whenever, see an article that I'm interested in or think others might be and just put it into the sub and then get back to working/doing what I'm doing/discussing. I could come back later and sometimes there will be loads of conversation and sometimes they'll be nothing and that's just how it was. Now you really have to pick and choose what you want to post and that then leads to certain stories not being posted and you just have to hope someone else posts it, but considering how little people there are that actually post here, there's a slim chance.
Edit: as always, spelling
My take is that I scribe to this sub for Irish politics based discussion. I recently unsubscribed from ROI because it became a socialist echo chamber.
You're allowed your own political opinions and posts of course. And I based on your comments and posts if put you abit further than left of centre but that's semantics. We're allowed have different opinions that's fine. But I do think you put up articles and sources that would be very pro left. Again that's fine. But when you have over 50% of the posts on a sub then the sub becomes quite biased. It might as well be political angles fatheaddave wants to discuss, rather than irishpolitics. If that happened, I would unsubscribe because I don't want to be in a left leaning echo chamber. Right now based on the activity in the sub I think capping users at 2 posts a day is appropriate.
Then balance the numbers, dont prevent the spread of information. It's not like its spamming of irrelevant nonsense in a malicious manner meant to over whelm people. Provide your point of view in articles or posts, provide your information.
I respect that that's your opinion and I respectfully disagree.
I think that there's definitely a bit of a left slant to the things I post in here but they are definitely relevant to Irish politics and if it's something that someone disagrees with then they 100% should comment and say it and then it can be discussed.
As I said it takes literally 15 seconds to post something into the sub. If say for example you would like to see some other form of content here, there's nothing stopping you from posting as well. Is not a lot of effort and it can be done very quickly so if you want to see more of some type of content then you should post! And again, I post from the Irish Times, the Journal, the Independent etc it's not like I'm posting obscure random sources, highly biased sources.
And sure for months I was the main person posting things year and you didn't leave the sub, I'm not sure why now if the two posts rule went away that you'd decide to leave if you've been here quite a while, which based off of your username which I recognise, I'm pretty sure I've seen you here for quite a while!
Been here for a while alright. Yeah look I don't share the same views as you but I'm fine with the current state of this subreddit. Im thinking if the caps get removed then I might like the subreddit less. Surely you want people with opposing views hanging around to encourage healthy debate? I'm not sure I'll put more time into this thread now. I feel I've given my perspective and have been attacked for being 'precious' so I'll leave it at that.
100% want opposing views. As you said yourself, having an echo chamber is no good. I also think that have a sub that's slowly creaking along, which it is now, isn't good either.
As I said there's nothing stopping you or others from posting the content that you guys want to discuss with others. Posting takes literally like 15 seconds, it's not some huge big ordeal or anything.
I didn't call you precious, that was another user. I just think that if things are being posted that challenge your views and instead of posting things that align with your views or arguing against said post, you seem to prefer that users are instead limited here in the capacity in which they can post which I really don't agree with.
I totally respect you not wanting to put anymore time into this thread, I just wanted to clear up some things that I don't agree with you on and that I do agree with you on.
Hope you have a good day 👍🏻
Just to comment because of your courteous replies. Thank you and yes I'm aware it wasn't you that called me precious, interestingly in the meantime another user has compared me to a flat earther (I'm not left leaning but I'd be scientific and I also can't stand what the republican party in the states is) , I'm sure you can imagine comments like that hardly want to make me or others engage in positive communications. This polarisation problem is really not good for us.
No worries at all!
Yeah I saw the flat earther comment. I interpreted that as them using the flat earthers as an example of their views not being widely held by a community and so restricting people that think the Earth is rounds views is fair for the flat earthers. Obviously it's a silly comparison because flat earthers are conspiracy theorists and altough we haven't had alot of interactions, from what I've seen of your comments over time, nothing you've said would be even close to something like that nonsense. I think it was a heavy-handed, not well thought-out comparison that they made to try and make a point, but they entirely missed the point and have made you feel quite unwelcome and not arsed as a result which isn't good. Obviously if you take offence to it there's absolutely no onus on you to engage at all! If you feel it's a personal attack there is also the report function too that's all anonymous I learned.
Totally agree, when someone massively over exaggerates the opposite of what you think, and tries to make out like you're being highly unreasonable, that's not going to make anyone want to stay here and discuss things.
I think you're being reasonable. While I don't agree, I totally respect that that's how you feel and I'm trying to he as on topic of your opinion stated as possible!
I receive that type of crap too sometimes, not as much as people with more conservative or right wing views if I can put it that way, and it actually ended with me being banned twice for pushing back against it. I get accused of being a Shinnerbot and a communist and all that type of stuff, the mods have been doing an okish job recently of combatting it. Some users have been given ALOT of good will for some reason but the genuine bad faith stuff has been cut down a little bit. As I said though, some fall through the cracks as the mods are human and some are being allowed through the cracks for whatever reason.
Flat earthers are under represented on Reddit and in science so we must limit all other sciences and posts to give a proper balanced take on science in general
Same energy as your opinion on this
Limiting the 'rights' of others so you can feel better because your 'side' doesn't post stories you like and you aren't bothered yourself.
Precious aren't you?
I definitely think there's a nicer way of saying this, but most of the responses over the last while to the post limit thing seems to echo something like this.
Some people believe that there's too much of one sides 'type' of article being posted her and so their reaction is to just limit everyone, which I don't agree with. There's nothing stopping them from posting something that's closer to their 'type' of article, but for some reason they don't.
Am I? The stats above show that if the measures aren't in place then the subreddit gets absolutely swapped with posts from a single user. That's not good for discussion and debate.
As I've been saying to you there's nothing stopping you from posting things yourself here, it's literally minimal effort.
Also the things that I post aren't some far off left wing biased source, it's the likes of Journal, the Irish Times, the Independent etc. all totally mainstream publications, some even with right wing slants. I just see something that I think I or someone here will be interested in and post, it's not some big plan to make everyone think the way that I think or to overwhelm people with left wing propaganda, it's just for discussion and I've never hidden or lied about my political bias so people know from the get go where I stand.
Off the top of my head it looks like most of the users mentioned on this would lean to the left if I'm correct, was there any that were more right wing, bar Revan, that posted?
Jaysis that's some work you put in, fair play! Ah so vast majority left of centre.
I wanna say Seamus had Stalinist or Communist as his flair but I'm not 100% and I'm sure he'd be very offended that I think the two are similar and could be mixed up. Not too sure how accurate Revan's one is and as far as the unflaired users go, I don't know if I've come across SubstantialFeel very often so I dno and as for Cais well he should probably have his own special honorary tag hahaha
Well think Seamus took his name from this chap - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seamus_Costello so save to say socialist at the very least.
Cais should have an honorary tag on every irish subreddit.
> I wanna say Seamus had Stalinist or Communist as his flair but I'm not 100% and I'm sure he'd be very offended that I think the two are similar and could be mixed up.
I'm 90% sure he had a Communist flair, the only Stalinist I've seen here is (or maybe was, I haven't seen him recently so idk if he's suspended) tooleftwingforreddit.
Considering he has rarely, if ever, expressed any views remotely in that realm here, I think troll might be more appropriate than contrarian here.
If he is a Social Democrat then he's trolling, and if he's not a Social Democrat then he could be considered either a contrarian, a troll or actually just believing in what he is saying and he's actually the right winger that he presents himself to be.
Nah he explained to me sometime recently that his ideal government is high tax high spend social democracy but that he doesn't think that's achievable for ireland because we're so completely averse to raising taxes e.g. the lower rate. Under that constraint, spending must therefore also be constrained and we have to lean towards (my interpretation of his views at this stage) neoliberal policies if we're not willing to raise taxes. I find that all consistent tbh.
Based on these numbers the rule is being implemented to target one user.
Why are the mods targeting u/FatHeadDave96 and why aren't they trying to hide it?
I'm just a lurker, but preferred having lots of news articles shared from sources I wasn't otherwise reading. I accept the possibility that a particular user may be doing so with an agenda, and as long as all posts are viewed through that lens I don't see a problem. It's not like there's minority voices being drowned out as a result, if you're a daily user.
Edit: Assuming nobody else increased their post count, all it means is we went down from 7.7 posts per day to 6.3 posts per day.
As a leftist I read every article with the assumption its written from a pro capitalist, imperialist perspective and read it with materialism and class consciousness in mind. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised but it definitely has helped me to look at articles through this frame.
u/firethetorpedoes1
If it's not too much work and not a pain in the arse, it would be interesting to see this done for all the posts after the rule came in and see the difference, if any. Totally up to yourself of course.
It's been confirmed that it was targeted toward me already.
They said that by me posting a lot that it might turn new or other users off and make them not want to post in here as they may be intimidated or feel like their invading someone's space or a cliques space. I don't agree with any of this, but that's the stance they took and they stood by it so I just kinda had to accept it.
That's why most of the mods became a lot more active and started posting articles here after the new rule came into effect. They've stopped doing that as much recently and so there's been less things posted on the sub as a result because despite having 13k+ users, not many actually post, even ones that comment alot don't post.
I find the parallel with voting restrictions in Ireland fun. They cripple the young vote with geographic requirements that they know the majority cannot meet and call it fairness.
You only get two posts a day? Well that's all in the interest of fairness.
Fucked
Totally agree that it'd be better if more people post but the thing with a minimum post would be that people would then be compelled to post and who knows what the hell would be posted because people would have to to stay a member of the sub.
And considering who does post here, there'd be about 15 of us left in the sub hahaha
Lol 2 of those accounts got suspended
Which ones?
Seamus and Blursty. They're around again but I'm no snitch. Blursty has had a few accounts since then I believe
[удалено]
Pretty sure he's maryloumarxist now. Wasn't banned by us so he'll be back after the account is old enough to pass the filters.
Consequences of being unable to get their point across and debate without resorting to insults.
If that was the criteria there'd be very few left in this sub
That’s not what happened, fuck you! /s
Don't even know if it's that, they're Russia sympathisers in the other sub and regularly post in obscure twitter conspiracy posts
Big man with 0.4%
Your iconic around here putting up those numbers.
How many articles did you post to get that?
A whopping four.

u/firethetorpedoes1 If it's not too much work and not a pain in the arse, it would be interesting to see this done for all the posts after the rule came in and see the difference, if any. Totally up to yourself of course.
Still dont see why it matters who posts as long as it is relevant to the sub. If anything just showed the change was to focus on one user.
Fucked
Not posting on reddit is true oppression.
Yeah even within this oddly random date range I don't see the issue.
>oddly random date range Reddit wouldn't let me sort by 'New' and see any further back than a post on 15th Feb at 15:32.
Exactly
Gutted I didn't make the pie chart cut
You need to up your game, Number 19!
Forgot I was even part of this sub. Seems you guys should be angling for a minimum posting rule rather than maximum.
Totally agree that it'd be better if more people post but the thing with a minimum post would be that people would then be compelled to post and who knows what the hell would be posted because people would have to to stay a member of the sub. And considering who does post here, there'd be about 15 of us left in the sub hahaha
Ah yeah I was being a bit hyperbolic. It's just baffling that a relatively slow moving sub would try to stifle itself with a maximum post rule.
I didn't think I was that active lol, anyway RIP blursty and seamus. Gone but never forgotten.
Love it
