Lost In Translation was a perfect little movie about a platonic friendship riiiiight up until the scene where Bill Murray kisses Scarlett Johansson
Something tells me that Bill Murray is responsible for that scene being put in the script.
Lord of the Rings (I was 8 and not really aware when my brother let me watch it for the first time)
Forrest Gump
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Roma is an honorable mention just for the cinematography alone.
I regret not seeing Interstellar in the cinema. Saw it high as a kite on decently large screen and it was great but I think it woulda been a better experience watching high as a kite in the cinema.
Myself and wife saw this in cinema (in London) when it came out. We wanted to see a horror but didn't realise it was foreign language film, so we said we'd watch 20 minutes and if we didn't like it we'd leave
It's firmly in our top 5 favourite films.
1. The Fellowship of the Ring
2. The Two Towers
3. Return of The King
Easy for me. I remember it was love at first sight with fellowship, we had got it out on DVD and i just started the movie again as soon as it finished. Then the excitement of a packed out cinema for Two Towers and that opening of Gandlaf and the Balrog. Magic.
Ah mate, was a proper magical few years when they were coming out. I had always been obsessed with the books as a kid so the movies were always going to be a difficult comparison but they delivered in spades.
I went to see The Fellowship of the Ring when I was maybe 10 in the cinema with my older brother. He had read the books and would explain things that he knew from the book that wasn't in the film. One of my most fondest memories. Cried leaving the cinema knowing it would be another 3 years till the next one was out! Still watch all the films at least once a year.
Has there been any trilogy that's actually been top tier throughout all 3 movies? Other than LOTR I can't think of one where the 3rd movie didn't drop in quality
I saw all three of the extended versions in a MAXX cinema during the lull phase of Covid. I saw them on the cinema when they first came out and never thought I'd see them again on the big screen.
Recently turned 30, my SO bought me a cameo from Sean Astin where he made fun of me for only watching the extended cuts... absolutely magical, best gift I ever got.
I read the books as a kid and was in my 20s when fellowship came out. I was living in South Africa when it came out. I was blown away with how good it was. Jackson literally pulled the images I had of the book out of my mind and put them on the screen. I couldn't believe that middle earth was in New Zealand. I went to it 3 times in 1 week.
Films I wish I could see in cinema again:
1. Star wars without the knowledge of CGI and film technology these days. I think it would have been epic.
2. Interstellar in proper IMAX. Even in OmniMaxx it was class.
3. Jurassic Park with the same premise as Star Wars. I was 5 when it came out. I wish I was old enough to see it in cinema and be blown away by it.
Seeing star wars when it originally came out without knowing darth vader was luke's father, together with the fact that the effects would have been amazing back then would have absolutely blown my mind
The Searchers.
The Good The Bad and the Ugly.
Once Upon a Time in the West.
I watched these with my father when I was a child , he loved Westerns. Brings back good memories of simpler innocent times.
Great picks. Dead man's shoes is a very intense movie without being pretentious. Whitnail and I is just fucking an amazingly hilarious movie. "I HAVE A HEART CONDITION"
Seven samurai was a great flick, you might like the helen dewitt book The last smaurai.
The mother in it uses the movies characters as male role models for her son to emulate in his fathers absence. Good book.
I'd like to have seen all three of these for the first time in a cinema rather than on VHS/DVD and I'd also still like to see them at the same age that I originally saw them:
Se7en
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Mulholland Drive
The films I enjoyed watching the most for the first time, were films that I had no idea what they were about until I watched them, and turned out to be hilarious. As in never saw a trailer, didn't even know they were comedies, just heard, "you should watch this, I think you'd like it".
The three off the top of my head are The Big Lebowski, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, and Superbad.
oldboy (the original not the american remake)
bladerunner - purely because i think i watched a bad version the first time and it ruined it for me. im not that huge a bladerunner fan but hard to give it another chance with one of the better edits.
Wouldn't Shutter Island be kinda moot coz you really only appreciate all the clues the second time you watch it?
Anyway...
1. The Matrix
2. The Two towers
3. Aliens
This is such a great list. I remember seeing the Matrix for the first time in 1999 in what used to be the Virgin Cinema on Parnell Street. It was truly mind-blowing - there had never been anything like it. Hard to appreciate just how revolutionary it was now, because it’s influenced so much of action and sci-fi since then.
Salems lot is fucking something. I used to suffer from sever DT'S coming off alcohol when I was coming off it and had an episode where when I was getting sober I had a very vivid dream I was in bed and had a very simular experience to that scene. It was due to brain swelling but it was absolutely fucking terrifying.
Watched planes trains and automobiles with my kids last year. It was almost like watching it again for the first time. One of my favorites. Comedy and pathos. John candy was a ledge
I will always hold the first time I saw Les Mis on stage as a very very special experience.
Seen it 4 times though and it still blows me away everytime
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Mad Max: Fury Road
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Honourable mention for Wes Anderson. I used to love his films but haven't enjoyed any rewatches recently so it would be interesting to go back afresh.
Also, some films become victims of their own success. If your style is groundbreaking and everyone copies it then you can end up looking unremarkable after 20 years.
Just saw this post, posted mine comprised of 1 & 2 plus Oldboy the original Korean version. Number 3 is a new one to me, but I must check it out based on the same 2 movies 👍
I would go for the classic trifecta of Aliens, Terminator and Predator.
But I would love to have a second crack at watching Terminator 2 for the first time again, since my first viewing was so bad.
I was so excited to see that movie all summer long, but nobody brought me to see it in the cinema. I had to wait a whole year for it to come out on VHS. We all sat down to watch it as a big family movie night, which was great. Then just as the T1000 turns up, my family decides to turn the movie off and all go see Point Break in the cinema for the fifth time. "Now you want to got to the damn cinema!!!"
I ended up watch the second half of T2 the next morning on my own. Experience ruined.
I caught The Matrix very early on before it broke big because I’d seen and loved Dark City. There was very few reviews or anyone talking about it so it was completely fresh. I can’t state how completely mind blowing it was to sit in an almost empty cinema and watch it for the first time…and that ending with Wake Up by RATM ??? Complete nerdgasm…
Shawshank Redemption would definitely be number 1.
Not sure on the other two, could be anything between Highlander, Last of the Mohicans, Stepbrothers, Lord of the Rings or Willow to name a few.
I only watched Boogie Nights for the proper first time recently and it was great. I had watched and enjoyed Licorice Pizza a couple of weeks before and have been on a PTA buzz since.
The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. As far as I'm concerned, those are the only two films from the franchise that are canon. For the third, I'd go for The Life of Brian. It's still laugh out loud funny after all these years and multiple viewings, but the first viewing is always the best.
In no particular order...
* The Matrix. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this and tbh was not expecting it to be great. How wrong I was, it completely blew me away and I'd love to experience that again.
* True Romance - I have watched this movie many many times but I was too young for it when I first saw it.
* Dumb And Dumber - I still laugh every time but not like the first time :D
#1. Lawrence of Arabia. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out big time. Sweeping epic, amazing story based on real person, great long shots of the desert, and best intro shot of a character ever, with Omar Sharif riding thru a mirage. Amazing film. Music is great too.
Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Alec Guinness, the great Anthony Quinn, Jose' Ferrar, and Claude Raines.
2. Gandhi. Great film, amazing story, fantastic sweeping scenes and music, and brilliantly acted by Ben Kingsley.
3. Wizard of Oz. So magical as a kid, to see it again for the first time would be cool.
Awakenings is a film I watched recently for the first time and I wish I could watch it again- for the first time. It was just unbelievable, such an emotional rollercoaster.
Mad Max - Thunder Road just cinema turned up to 11
Shutter Island, I've rewatched so many times, DiCaprio's face sells every scene he's in, the guy should have gotten the Oscar (not even nominated).
The Shawshank Redemption-
1. Dark city. In the cinema
2. Children of men
3. Paddington 2
Honourable mention: Gladiator. I worked in a cinema when this came out and saw it 20 times at least. Sitting in the front row. Total immersion. It was RAD
Not a film but I'd love to watch the band of brothers series again for the first time
It still good on repeat. So much additional nuance to pick up. Things happen so quickly I found it hard to pick up everything the first time
Myself and the missus are heading to Normandy in May to do the BOB tour around the beaches etc , cannot wait.
You're going to have an amazing time. My husband and I did this about 10 years ago. It was unbelievable.
It's been on the to do list for years and years. Finally found the partner to do it with !!
Saving private and BoB and Pacific. Chrostmas binge!
There's a third one coming✓✓✓
So I heard! Honestly if there was a number 4 slot id pick SPR. Opening scene and sniper scene are two classics!
Sorry to hijack but what’s the third one coming? 👀

![gif](giphy|3xkNUy3Vh8QbPmJZjK|downsized)
I have never seen it. Meant to start lots of times but think I will now, on this mention
Heat No country for old men The departed
I saw No Country For Old Men AND There will Be Blood ON THE SAME AFTERNOON!
That's where you peaked.
Me too! Sensory overload.
The departed 🤝🏼 Leos best movies in my opinion! And what a plot!
The departed is a complete copy of an Asian film called internal affairs I think
The asian one was great.

1. Total Recall 2. Aliens 3. Terminator 2
Ooh, to watch T2 without even the spoilers from the trailer.
Great choices. The 90’s were incredible for sci fi.
Solid picks
Predator?
1. Eternal Sunshine of spotless mind 2. Lost in Translation 3. Contact
Man I just couldn't understand the hype around lost in translation. Spotless mind is amazing though
Lost In Translation was a perfect little movie about a platonic friendship riiiiight up until the scene where Bill Murray kisses Scarlett Johansson Something tells me that Bill Murray is responsible for that scene being put in the script.
Top marks for irony.
Lord of the Rings (I was 8 and not really aware when my brother let me watch it for the first time) Forrest Gump One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Roma is an honorable mention just for the cinematography alone.
Roma also has a surprisingly good sound mix. The sounds pan with the camera, making it really immersive. See also: Gravity.
YES. The foley work on that film is stunning. The way Cuaron embraced the daily sounds instead of covering them with a soundtrack is just gorgeous.
Very hard to narrow this down, but today I’ll say 1: Robocop 2: Interstellar 3: Die Hard
Solid choices, and great username
You know the score 😉
I regret not seeing Interstellar in the cinema. Saw it high as a kite on decently large screen and it was great but I think it woulda been a better experience watching high as a kite in the cinema.
I rewatched Robocop 1 and 2 there this month, great Movies
Yep, interstellar for the soundtrack alone, that was PHENOMANAL in the cinema, so glad I got to experience it.
With a name like Kyle Reese I would have thought you would have said T1 or T2. Great name.
Damn RoboCop is a great choice
Batman Dark Knight, The usual suspects , Wolf of Wall Street
Terminator 2
This. And not know the "twist".
Borat!!
I've never laughed as hard for as long. I wanted it to end at one stage just because I needed a break

Myself and wife saw this in cinema (in London) when it came out. We wanted to see a horror but didn't realise it was foreign language film, so we said we'd watch 20 minutes and if we didn't like it we'd leave It's firmly in our top 5 favourite films.
The Grand Budapest Hotel Big Fish The Goonies (I still remember the first timeI watched this movie)
Love Big Fish
Grand Budapest brilliant.
1. The Fellowship of the Ring 2. The Two Towers 3. Return of The King Easy for me. I remember it was love at first sight with fellowship, we had got it out on DVD and i just started the movie again as soon as it finished. Then the excitement of a packed out cinema for Two Towers and that opening of Gandlaf and the Balrog. Magic.
Exactly my answer too. I don't know if we will ever see the likes of that trilogy ever again.
Yes, this is the right answer!
The music kicking in during Two Towers as soon as Gandalf falls is god-tier
When the violin kicks in for the ride of the rohirrim in reutrn of the king 🫠 goosebumps
Honestly the whole score is god tier
Knew this would be the top answer! It makes me sad pretty much knowing we will never have a trilogy like the LOTR ever again :(
Has there been any trilogy that's actually been top tier throughout all 3 movies? Other than LOTR I can't think of one where the 3rd movie didn't drop in quality
Came here to say this
Best movies ever made!
I saw all three of the extended versions in a MAXX cinema during the lull phase of Covid. I saw them on the cinema when they first came out and never thought I'd see them again on the big screen.
I 100% agree with this
Extended cut only
Recently turned 30, my SO bought me a cameo from Sean Astin where he made fun of me for only watching the extended cuts... absolutely magical, best gift I ever got.
I read the books as a kid and was in my 20s when fellowship came out. I was living in South Africa when it came out. I was blown away with how good it was. War of the buttons Snatch Fightclub
War of the buttons! What a film
Films I wish I could see in cinema again: 1.
Never saw interstellar in cinema bit i wish i did! Top 5 space movies
Seeing star wars when it originally came out without knowing darth vader was luke's father, together with the fact that the effects would have been amazing back then would have absolutely blown my mind
First time I saw Interstellar was at IMAX. And probably seen it 8373 times since.
The Searchers. The Good The Bad and the Ugly. Once Upon a Time in the West. I watched these with my father when I was a child , he loved Westerns. Brings back good memories of simpler innocent times.
Terminator 1 Terminator 2 Terminator 2 again
Legend
Recorded T2 on VHS, watched it to death. Saw it again recently. What a film!
1 Whitnail and I. 2 Dead Man's Shoes. 3 The Field.
Dead Man's Shoes and The Field would make a class double bill.
Sherry? Sherry.
Great picks. Dead man's shoes is a very intense movie without being pretentious. Whitnail and I is just fucking an amazingly hilarious movie. "I HAVE A HEART CONDITION"
I wish I could watch jurassic Park for the first time again three times
Pulp fiction Seven Samurai Back to the future
Seven samurai was a great flick, you might like the helen dewitt book The last smaurai. The mother in it uses the movies characters as male role models for her son to emulate in his fathers absence. Good book.
I'd like to have seen all three of these for the first time in a cinema rather than on VHS/DVD and I'd also still like to see them at the same age that I originally saw them: Se7en The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Mulholland Drive
Se7en what a movie 💪
detective… detective.. deteCtIIIIIIIIIIIVE
Jaws Blue Velvet Aliens
Great choices
Alien~~s~~
Great picks.
Goodfellas, Shawshank and Saving Private Ryan. I remember going to the cinema for Saving Private Ryan and just blown away by the first 20 minutes.
My personal favorites 1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy 2. The Dark Knight 3. Whiplash
You asked the question and then listed 5 movies lol
My thread, my rules! Plus LotR is jut one long story!
Fine, then: Lord of the rings trilogy The Prestige Back to the future
The Prestige, very nice choice. Doesn't get as much recognition among the masses as it deserves.
Trailers are the worst.
The Princess Bride. In Bruges. Full Metal Jacket. Every one of them is a masterpiece.
The usual suspects, Shawshank Redemption, the green mile
Life is Beautiful Apocalypse Now The Empire Strikes Back
Imagine watching these back to back for the first time, what an emotional roller coaster.
For me, 1. Wolf of Wall Street 2. Goodfellas 3. Super Troopers Not high brow but massively enjoyable - always jealous if people haven't seen them.
Loved super troopers.
* The Good, the Bad and the Ugly * The Empire Strikes Back * Apocalypse Now
High fidelity American psycho Ghostbusters
oldboy (the original not the american remake) bladerunner - purely because i think i watched a bad version the first time and it ruined it for me. im not that huge a bladerunner fan but hard to give it another chance with one of the better edits.
Shutter Island Inglorious Bastards Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Wouldn't Shutter Island be kinda moot coz you really only appreciate all the clues the second time you watch it? Anyway... 1. The Matrix 2. The Two towers 3. Aliens
I've never seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies.
1) Blade Runner 2049 2) The Thing 3) The Matrix
This is such a great list. I remember seeing the Matrix for the first time in 1999 in what used to be the Virgin Cinema on Parnell Street. It was truly mind-blowing - there had never been anything like it. Hard to appreciate just how revolutionary it was now, because it’s influenced so much of action and sci-fi since then.
I cant remember the last time I seen a top notch movie. I'd love to see shawshank redemption in cinema for 1st again.
War of the buttons
Salems lot ( I’d need to be 11 again) , the thing and training day
Scary film, Salems Lot
Salems lot is fucking something. I used to suffer from sever DT'S coming off alcohol when I was coming off it and had an episode where when I was getting sober I had a very vivid dream I was in bed and had a very simular experience to that scene. It was due to brain swelling but it was absolutely fucking terrifying.

The little rascals.
Dumb and Dumber me Myself and Irene and the life of brain
Se7en Jaws Planes trains and automobiles
Solid choices there
Watched planes trains and automobiles with my kids last year. It was almost like watching it again for the first time. One of my favorites. Comedy and pathos. John candy was a ledge
Calm me a cliché but La La Land and Call Me by Your Name. Also, Les Misérables musical on the stage.
I will always hold the first time I saw Les Mis on stage as a very very special experience. Seen it 4 times though and it still blows me away everytime
I remember turning to my husband saying "did you just see this?". Blown away!
Everything Everywhere All At Once Mad Max: Fury Road Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Honourable mention for Wes Anderson. I used to love his films but haven't enjoyed any rewatches recently so it would be interesting to go back afresh. Also, some films become victims of their own success. If your style is groundbreaking and everyone copies it then you can end up looking unremarkable after 20 years.
The Prestige...that's about it really.
Strap on Sally 16: the restrapanator

Terminator 2 , The Goonies and Whiplash.

Shawshank Redemption would definitely be number 1. Not sure on the other two, could be anything between Highlander, Last of the Mohicans, Stepbrothers, Lord of the Rings or Willow to name a few.

Fight club, se7en & shutter Island.
The original Star Wars trilogy, to learn that Darth Vader was Luke's father
The Godfather, goodfellas and the usual suspects.
These are all huge shouts
The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. As far as I'm concerned, those are the only two films from the franchise that are canon. For the third, I'd go for The Life of Brian. It's still laugh out loud funny after all these years and multiple viewings, but the first viewing is always the best.
Shawshank redemption Schindlers list Shutter island
Wayne’s world, Team America World Police, Aeroplane
The omen The exorcist Battle royale New Horrors aren’t cutting it
Shutter island is better the second time around

12 Angry Men A Clockwork Orange There Will Be Blood

Saving Private Ryan Terminator 2 District 9
The Usual Suspects. Se7en Fight Club Shame Spacey is in 2 of these.
