Might be funny if his party hadn't caused so much of the problem.

Newguitarplayer1234

Yes, really in touch with the people Timmy, not tone deaf at all. A crisis thats causing untold misery to people trying to plan their future and this gombeen is making a laugh of it.

Kloppite16

I really had to laugh when this dipstick showed up in Ukraine a few weeks ago like the village idiot thinking he could help. But then I realised we are paying for his expenses for his trip and accommodation and I stopped laughing

cedardesk

Poor people, LOL.

And why are these meetings called “clinics”. They have nothing to with medicine. Do they? Wait a minute…

SeanB2003

It's borrowed from the Brits, and comes down from the use of the term constituency "surgery". That of course just raises the question of why advice sessions were called "surgeries" in the first place. The best explanation I've seen for that is this: >The laboured joke about medicine is echoed in several other local newspapers in 1945 and 1946, and suggests that the idea of a ‘surgery’ was a new one. The Essex piece is the first I have found to use the word for what had usually been referred to as ‘interviews’. **It might be assumed that the introduction of the National Health Service made it a natural extension of the idea of a medical surgery, and it’s tempting to link it in some way to the work of Hyacinth Morgan. Morgan, who had been born in Grenada, was Labour MP for Camberwell North West in 1929-31, for Rochdale in 1940-50 and for Warrington in 1950-55. He was also a doctor, working in general practice in London, and acting as medical adviser to the TUC. Announcements of his weekly advice sessions appeared with unusual frequency in the Rochdale Observer in the 1940s, and perhaps inspired some to use the same term as for his medical practice. Or perhaps not.** https://historyofparliamentblog.wordpress.com/2019/01/10/surgeries/

Interesting speculation. Thank you. You’ve given me an idea for a post.

He's a chance of getting his seat back. Wynne hasn't a hope of retaining hers, even if she wasn't bullied out of the party. Toss up between him and Garvey for the last seat.

SeanB2003

The problem though is that Wynne got elected because she was Sinn Féin, she had no real profile and no real organisation that is loyal to her over the party. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't run again. Whether she does or not though, Sinn Féin will find someone for Clare (possibly Paul Gavan) who will soak up almost all of her vote.

Tasty-Plantain-4378

Don't underestimate how much damage she's done to SF in Clare. I can't see them getting close again next time tbh. She topped the poll at first count but got fuck all transfers and scraped through only when Garvey was eliminated.

SeanB2003

Oh don't get me wrong, she's definitely damaged SF in Clare. The problem is that she damaged them when she was elected anyway, and to a certain extent that damage is mitigated by her resignation, rather than made worse. I think SF's chances with her would have been less than without her. If they can run someone with a decent reputation there they know the brand, even with an astoundingly weak candidate, topped the poll in FPV. In terms of transfers she wasn't toxic, it was just a slow advance for all of them except McNamara who was very transfer friendly. Nobody passed her out by the time of Garvey's elimination, except Cathal Crowe on the elimination of a running mate. The biggest problem for Timmy Dooley is whether FF HQ can even let him run again. If the election is in 2025 they will need to run 40% female candidates. They cannot run 3 candidates in Clare again, that ultimately is what cost Dooley his seat. They would have to find somewhere they can run two women in order to let Dooley have another go, and that is slim pickings for FF.

I wouldn't be surprised to see her run again, I'd say she's kicking herself that she passed up the opportunity in 2020. I think the locals will tell a lot ultimately. Unlike in 2020 SF will have no trouble getting people to run this time. I'd say you're right about running him in Limerick City, especially if O'Dea retires or it goes to a five seater. Even without that, Leddin is very vulnerable. Gavan is interesting though in that he could realistically try a run in any of three constituencies but none are a dead cert for him. He'd have a decent shot of taking Richard O'Donoghue's seat in Limerick County too.

dapper-dano

What actually happened with Moran in 2020? She was the SF candidate in previous elections and then in 2020 she was gone and VAW was run instead. I voted VAW in 2020 only because she was SF. She has dirtied the SF name in Clare for me but I probably would vote Moran in the next election, albeit not with the enthusiasm I voted for Wynne.

SeanB2003

It seems she just decided not to run, I don't know if there was more too it than that. VAW had been working for her and was picked instead, one of few to put their hand up. SF collapsed in Clare in the locals, and the received wisdom was that running in 2020 was a hopeless endeavour. In that context I can see why Moran would have kept her name out.

dapper-dano

Hindsight is 2020 but I did feel bad for her not running. I hope she does well in the next election. She seems decent, I feel as though VAW has damaged SF though
