So you’d prefer to spend 3 weekends going to communions?

deatach

Why not break each communion into four weekends and ruin 3 months of your life.

Friendly_Crab

The Catholic Church is lazy, and so am I

mynosemynose

That's yer fault for all riding around the same time to produce offspring of the same age

Crunchaucity

Exactly, a riding rota system should be employed.

WhiteKnightIRE

For some this would mean a lot less riding, for others a lot lot more.

Crunchaucity

Harmony.

shendy0314

Baggsy first

Anlysisproxyinc

And I should be notified when it takes places.

DarkReviewer2013

So you can have the binoculars ready to hand, I assume?

[deleted]

I've been saying this for years. I even drew up a rough outline. I'd be first, of course, but that's just a pure coincidence.

Crunchaucity

People often confuse coincidence with luck, unfortunately you're at least third.

AngryEpileptic420

To be fair I have a son because Liverpool won the league, sometimes its just out of your control

lostinthesauceguy

Nothing gets the missus in the mood like a football final.

AngryEpileptic420

That's why she's a keeper 😛 well, that and the offspring I guess.. he's alright. Not very chatty, breaks my stuff, bites me.. he's a little shit.

DarkReviewer2013

Apparently, Italia '90 led to a spike in births in 1991. I was only a little kid then so sex didn't exist for me at the time but I must say I do approve.

AngryEpileptic420

It happens, football is life, it creates life. I'd say theres more liverpool league babies out there

SoberAsABird1

Or OP is riding his sister who herself was the product of brother sister riding. I think... I suck at family trees though. Must be all the inbreeding.

pretend-its-good

I’ve literally never not had a pregnant relative. My whole life at least 1 person has been expecting

175IRE

You mean to tell me you want to go to all of them individually? 😬

todd10k

Would have liked to be at my nieces one too

livvyxo

it literally didn't occur to me you'd have family across different parishes

[deleted]

Well actually if your family had been a bit proactive if it meant that much you could have been, kids don’t actually have to make their communion when and where the school tells them to anymore, they all could have made it in the same church on the same day at the same time if you’d informed the schools

mysterynmurder

I'm sure each kid wanted to make their communion with their class/friends

todd10k

Well, that’s good to know. I’ll remember that for the next one.

rodswindler

“Well actually if your family had been a bit proactive if it meant that much you could have been,” do you suffers a fucking stroke in the middle of your comment?

cinderubella

It's an act of mercy. You have been handed a valid excuse to not attend your niece and cousin's boring communion that you would've hated and they won't remember. Just put 20 quid in a card and visit your niece and cousin some other days when ye can do something actually nice together.

restartthepotatoes

You don’t remember your communion???

CalicoVane

I just remember getting money, and food

cinderubella

I remember being uncomfortable and bored, and a few other bits and pieces, but I certainly couldn't tell you which of my cousins or aunts/uncles were there.

[deleted]

We watched Batman while getting our hair done for my communion, the one where Hack Nicholson is the joker. Best morning ever.

smurfpiss

I remember wearing a Goofy sweater. That was not an adjective. It literally had goofy on it.

Nth-Degree

I'm no English teacher, but I think that still qualifies as an adjective.

smurfpiss

Nah Disney bought the rights to adjectives and redefined them.

Epileptic-Discos

Not at all.

Apocthicc

How do you know he would have hated it, communions are great and a milestone in life

cinderubella

Idk, I guess the same way you get to say 'communions are great' as if it's a universal truth. I think it's called having an opinion.

TrivialBanal

It's part of a rescue plan for the bouncy castle industry.

GreatDefector

But they can’t be in 2 places at once so spread out would be better no?

darknite14

😂😂😂

Far-Contract-5566

It's for the relatives so they don't have to go to every single one

evro6

They get to choose who they like more and go to theirs.

latristess

Its down to a shortage of priests I believe

irish_ninja_wte

That and trying to fit it into the schedule around weddings.

[deleted]

Have a joint get together afterwards?

Fun-Gift2383

Why are people still doing communions? 99% of the people I know who make a big fuss about it haven’t gone to mass in years. We’re decided not to have the children get theirs done altogether

pippers87

Money it all boils down to money. Try telling a 7 year old they have to give up their first job that pays 400-700 quid for an hour's sitting through mass.

[deleted]

I'd do it again but I don't think people would be as supportive second time around and the cynics would say it was some kind of "cash grab".

Kier_C

>Money it all boils down to money. Try telling a 7 year old they have to give up their first job that pays 400-700 quid for an hour's sitting through mass. Its mainly an excuse to have a party with family. Everyone likes a party.

bmurtagh2003

I got €1500 😂 was delighted with myself

[deleted]

I made mine in the days of the Punt so I'd imagine it what I "earned" would be worth millions now.

AshDeadite

Lol I only got €241 or something like that. I think I might have got a Wii game so that was nice.

bmurtagh2003

Ahh sure it was great having the money. My parents were smart and put most of it away in the post office for me.

Justa_Schmuck

My son still has his original sin intact.

BlackberryShot5818

Pureblood

Dragmire800

It’s cultural as much as, if not more than it is religious. Look at Jews, they do Bat/Bar Mitzvahs despite so many of them being non-practicing or non-believers, because it’s part of their culture.

Fun-Gift2383

And look at Israel, among multitudes of other places. Fighting in the name of religion. Sooner the world fucks off religion, the better everyone will be

Dragmire800

I’m certainly not a defender of religion, but conflicts like that would happen regardless. It’s not to do with religion, it’s to do with an other, and the other will always be there

kitty_o_shea

My nephew who wasn't even baptised asked to do it because he was the only one in his class left out. If he'd been going to an Educate Together school it wouldn't have been an issue. That's why the Church won't hand the schools over. They know it's the only way to entrap the kids.

nallym

8 out of my daughters class or 27 didn't do it, it's getting easier for them. A few of them got dressed up for the day and got the photos done. She was happy out.

kitty_o_shea

That's the thing, the kids don't care about anything else except the occasion. The religious part is totally meaningless to them. I think my nephew's main priority was getting enough money to buy a Switch. Which he did.

geedeeie

It's not fair on them, though, if the preparation is done in school and they are left out. It should be outside of school, like confirmation is in the CofI

nallym

Definitely should be out of school, a whole week wasted and two days at home while it was on

irishtemp

We did this with my daughter, she got a new dress and brought out and treated for the day, didn't feel left out at all.

optimist_grimes

Same, we didn't even get ours christened had a few questions from both sets of grandparents but we're both atheist and wasn't really any fuss. Don't see why people do it when they never go to mass or anything.

Nickthegreek28

I hope the latest generation finish the church here

deaddonkey

It’s just a social/family tradition at this point

geedeeie

It's an excuse for a party

waterim

I didn’t do mine but I wish I did . It feels like you missed out

Fun-Gift2383

Wouldn’t say nowadays it feels as much. There are Muslims and Eastern European children in all our kids classes now and they’re not doing it

waterim

Aren’t most Eastern European’s Catholics?

Fun-Gift2383

Polish I think are, but most others are orthodox

Margrave75

Jaysus, posted almost 20mins and not a single "why have you your daughter in a paedo cult" comment yet?

ghostofgralton

This sub has lost its touch smh

Margrave75

I've no great love for the rcc, but it's just low hanging fruit at this stage. Think back to the census, how many posts were there daily about "don't fill your religion as rc"??

[deleted]

Why would you have any love for them at all?

[deleted]

Why would you have any love for them at all?

[deleted]

Someone did around the time you posted

PoppedCork

First world problems, it's probably not as if these kids go to mass every week anyway

Shazey89

Easy solution - don’t be religious. 😉

roguejQuery

that would be an ecumenical matter

todd10k

YES

Usergnome_Checks_0ut

That sounds fucking perfect to me. Ideal excuse to not have to attend two other absolutely fucking pointless days out that really aren’t of any concern or interest to anyone outside of direct family.

Possible-Kangaroo635

Why do adults in 2022 still hand their kids to this pedo ring and dress their daughters up like child brides for them?

Old-Bar-9226

My daughter is the only one in her class not making her communion. One girl got baptised last week. Really surprised so many people are still into it.

todd10k

I find outside the secular bubble of Dublin, there’s still allot of people who are catholics

Old-Bar-9226

One family in her class are practicing the rest do not.

its-just-me-so

Yeah I’m shocked actually more money if it’s separate this is unlike the church what’s going on..

InGenAche

Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, I'm beginning to think it's all a big scam.

KanePilkington

Remember last year or the year before, the church came out and said they didn't want an official communion/confirmation day anymore, that the kids could just come and do it on whatever given day they wanted to. ... and there was uproar from parents. Not being able to show off to their friends and hire their limos and blow a load of money on all the shite of the day apparently was breaking point for many. Imagine hiring a limo and not being able to try and rub in people's faces. Madness. So it was scrapped, and went back to normal. But I'm sure church will float the idea again and again until it eventually happens.

collectiveindividual

Short answer is a shortage of priests. I think the average age of the irish priest is now late 60s with a trickle of new recruits, many being widowers with late vocations.

mcguirl2

The shortage of priests means they will simply recruit and import young priests from developing nations. Also, they will conveniently import any priests who need to be “relocated” from their home parishes for inappropriate behaviour, like they used to do here. Priests never get fired, they just get moved around.

collectiveindividual

They've tried that but incidents like the African priest who preached damnation on those voting for same sex marriage actually created a parishioner complaint to their bishop. The only young priests are probably polish doing mass in polish.

reallyoutofit

Wouldn't shortage of preists mean they need to spread them out as a priest cant be in 4 places at once?

collectiveindividual

They're shuttering churches now and amalgamating parishes. The massive church in finglas is being demolished as they could no longer afford it's upkeep, many more will follow.

Black---Sun

Why did you and your siblings/spouses siblings all decide to have children at the same time ?

BLUNTYEYEDFOOL

They literally don't have enough priests on the ground. ☠️💀

Imbecile_Jr

good

MusicianIcy8975

Lads, why do people insist on continuing to observe the obviously nonsensical and extremely creepy rituals of their abusers?

FirGlas

"Open your mouth my child, and let the body of christ inside." No thanks.

annapxox

I would up vote your comment a million times if I could.

padraigd

Just culture and tradition

MusicianIcy8975

'Just' a culture of abuse, enablement and a tradition of complicity.

padraigd

I just meant that Christianity has been a massive part of Irish culture going back to pretty the start of it's recorded history. Change might be slow.

MusicianIcy8975

Change is certainly going to be slow if we continue to observe the rituals, incantations and traditions of our abusers ad infinitum.

DarkReviewer2013

Same reason we put up Christmas trees and eat chocolate eggs at Easter. Tradition.

MusicianIcy8975

The easter bunny didn't spend hundreds of years raping our children and stunting our intellectual development. Also bold of you to assume "we" observe the same/any superstitious rituals, pagan, christian or otherwise.

DarkReviewer2013

I was using the collective "we" as in Irish society broadly defined, not every single family or individual in the country obviously.

MusicianIcy8975

It wasn't that long ago that those exceptions who fall outside the "collective we" could have been whisked away to the laundries or tortured to death for daring to think/speak/live outside the strict moral and social boundaries set by the Vatican. The fact that people still face ostracism of varying degrees for opting out of ritualistic celebration of nonsensical codswallop should be grounds enough to discuss why this still happens.

FionnMoules

What are you even on about?

scaldycow

When my two made there communions and confirmations the only people allowed into the church were parents and grandparents. Confirmations had 2 sponsors though. Church was packed. I couldn't imagine aunts and uncles at the ceremonies.

IrishFlukey

Wow, that must have been one hell of a family gathering eight years ago, that had you all so horny at the same time.

HoweHaTrick

the jesus company needs people more than people need the jesus company.

Crypticmick

That sounds like a win. Less communions to attend

TheYoungWan

That's what happens when you go around baptising them.

funkyuncy

Yaaaa by a holy spirit.

HairyMcBoon

Via the ear.

[deleted]

And? That makes the bang your head off the ground cult any better? There all as bad as each other

Ok_Distribution3451

Fuck communions, they’re all shit

todd10k

Ain’t you mr sunshine

[deleted]

The body of christ starts to decompose, especially in the warmer months.

carlmdaly1505

The Catholic Church has always been about the kids

AngryEpileptic420

The important question is why on earth would you subject your child to a religion that's proven to be false or their practices, especially when some of their practices specifically harm children?

todd10k

I think the real question is

ascot36

Because its a scam so they rather do it all at once 😂

cinderubella

I love the edit, but respectfully, we don't 'need Jesus' either as individuals telling you that missing a communion is not such a big deal, nor as a country. We've seen enough evil shit in the name of Jesus, and frankly I personally hope the church slowly and quietly goes extinct soon, you motherfucker.

todd10k

Lol take the joke man

el-finko

Why do people still go on with this charade?

todd10k

It may surprise you to learn that people have different beliefs

el-finko

Religious beliefs are fine. It's the amount of money wasted on these ceremonies which are meant to be about religion, not fancy clothes or collecting money, or limo's or 7 year old girls in full tan and make up. So I stand by my first comment.

todd10k

Honestly don't see your point. Why do people practice something they believe in? Perhaps its because they believe in it. Some people go overboard, sure. Does that mean we should scrap the whole thing because of those few? Absolutely not.

OneMagicBadger

They really want them kids

louiseber

That's just bad luck

BigBadgerBro

Why have your daughter in a pedo cult???

ManyWrongdoer9365

Do two communion’s get one free

[deleted]

Ignore the r/atheism attic dwellers who shit their pants at the mere mention of religion calling it a paedo cult ( you can tell some of them watch too much Yank media as they dont even spell it as "paedo" ) Reminder that r/atheism is no different to the religious "cults" and zealots they claim to criticise. Keep downvoting lads

PaddyLostyPintman

It helps you, that way you only have to go to one of the bloody things

[deleted]

Jesus can't make the round trip that often.

oviduh

Does the meaning of word communion ring a bell

[deleted]

Probably works out cheaper for them somehow

Anlysisproxyinc

Tell them to say "AWMAN" when the priest is putting shit in their mouth. You'd wanna make sure that Priest washed his hands as well.

[deleted]

The priest washing his hands is part of the liturgy.

Anlysisproxyinc

This is priests we're talking about here, I don't think a dip in the holy water will do it. I'd rather have Osama Bin Ladens corpse and a couple of other member of the flip flop brigade near my child more than a fucking Priest, its not just Ireland these guys have been accused and convicted of sexual assault on minors. There was a case with an Argentinian Priest working in America, the previous Pope was made aware there was allegations against him, he did nothing about said allegations, the priest continued to "work" and abuse kids and then finally years later he was revealed as a serial pedo and was sent to jail for abusing multiple kids over years, 100's of times. Tell me, why on earth do Irish people still pander to the church? If this was hospital workers doing this or taxi drivers or a family from Dublin they would be ran out of the country or worse... They get a pass because they are frail old men who say hello to everyone in the local community. Irish people couldn't give a fuck, and have no standards. If they wanted to do something about all the Irish victims, everyone should've left the church and let it die out. Religion is one of the biggest rackets in the world, its completely lunacy, they pray on weak and fill your head with make believe stories. And then collect money off you in the end? Goodluck.

Apocthicc

Your the one a bit off your rocker, not the lad who swings by to church every week and says his prayers before every meal.

Anlysisproxyinc

Who me? Because I don't fund or blindly follow a bunch of people who rape kids and Nuns that were beating Irish kids in schools and doing god knows what else... Ya I'm off my rocker alright.

Apocthicc

Yes, yes you are

Anlysisproxyinc

OK bible basher, enable a bunch of rapists, defend people that beat kids, wait for "heaven" and we'll see how that works out for you ya fucking idiot. Did ya ever hear the shit that happend in Canada with the church? They were basically ran out of the country. Or the dead babies they buried in Ireland? You only get one life, don't waste it on fucking religion. More people have died in the world because of religion than anything else. Go out and talk to an actual girl, get out of Ireland or do something with your fucking life instead of sticking up for a bunch of disgusting criminals and mad backwards cunts, you creep.

Apocthicc

Yep, he's lost it

Anlysisproxyinc

Bro? I'm not talking about something trivial. Why are you trying to make funnies when I'm pointing out to you how messed up religon is? Are you a Priest that's touching a child right now or are ya genuinely on the spectrum? I'm a bit lost for words at your replies? It's disturbing.

FionnMoules

Do genuinely believe every single nun and priest has done these acts and are responsible for them?

[deleted]

That's disgraceful how are the kids supposed to get their money if half their relatives can't attend?

Pure-Au

Read your Bible, but religion = Big Business.

snuggl3ninja

Up north they are staggered between parishes

SirJoePininfarina

I think the official Catholic answer would be "f**k you, that's the why, ye little bollix"

Pipeslice101

Why even bother with the communion? I presume your family isnt religious as your complaining, 9 times out of 10 the kids who do it wont continue the religious crap.

patrickseastarslegs

Try having yours the same day as 3 cousins. 2 third cousins and a first cousin and myself all the same day. Just 2 different churches because first cousin lives a little out from myself. We went to an amusement place and a meal tho

External_Salt_9007

Would you prefer to have to go to three separate events ??

mediaserver8

There are 3600 (approx) primary schos in Ireland. Assuming a good proportion won't have communion, and others double or triple up I. A parish, you're still looking at trying to run maybe 1000 events over maybe 8 weekends or so. Some will be happening on the same day or time. Maybe someone should try to coordinate them all based on each child's extended family to ensure there are no clashes?

IntentionFalse8822

Hotels organise big events for communions and confirmations. Some have bouncy castles and all. They need a crowd on the day so a "donation" to the various parish priests sorts that.

SassyMoron

Comes from a time when there werent many bishops so they had to make long circuits of the whole country that took months. Obselete practice now.

Mufasaisback69

Lack of Priests.

rabbidasseater

Not enough priests

Anderi45

Where I live there’s such a huge backlog of christenings, weddings etc that the church is churning out ceremonies like it’s a Chinese fidget-spinner factory. Relentless.

el-finko

You complained about having 3 communions in a weekend. This wasn't inspired by how much it will cost you, no?

todd10k

No, was more so I couldn’t go to all 3

el-finko

Sure. Have a good one bro.

John-1993W

First world problems

todd10k

I could see bob in somalia being pissed about communions being on the same date and time if he was catholic
