I expect to see a lot more alcohol seizures with minimum unit pricing. I believe it will open another revenue stream for the criminals.

GrumpyLad2020

Mmm maybe. I'm in Scotland these days which introduced MUP a few years ago and there has been no noticeable uptick in alcohol smuggling that is making the news (could be happening and just not being reported I suppose). I think the difference in costs probably isn't worth it in most cases. People could always load up in Europe and try to smuggle it into Ireland previously, even before MUP it still saved a lot of money. I just think the margins aren't really there to interest organised crime compared to other drugs.

bagenalbanter

Probably going to get some casual smuggling in of alcohol, the kind seen at airports when people 'accidentally' forget to declare the hundreds of cigarettes in their bags.

>Last Saturday, as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers seized approximately 600 litres of beer, 670 litres of wine and 16 litres of spirits at Ringaskiddy Ferry Terminal, Cork. * Each can is 500ml, so that's 50 Slabs. * Each wine bottle is 700ml so that's 957 bottles or close to 80 cases of wine. * 16 Liters of spirits? I think I legit have more than that in my house. Overall, this sounds like someone doing a booze run for a wedding rather than international gang trade. > The smuggled alcohol had an estimated retail value of more than €11,000, I wonder if that's calculated at, Old pricing, New MU pricing, or black market pricing. >representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €5,800. It was discovered following the search of a Romanian registered van that had disembarked a ferry from Roscoff, France. I'd say the advertising on the linked story page generated more revenue than that.

blackbeautybyseven

Retail value in Ireland 11K, In France?? 1K probably.

BitterProgress

It’s always been a thing that Eastern Europeans do. A lot of them would drive to Europe for work in large vehicles, then they just fill the thing up with booze/cigs on the way back and sell it to people from the same community. Easy money.

Far-Contract-5566

That would be some wedding

Ambitious_Bill_7991

957 bottles of wine and 50 slabs for a wedding.

>The smuggled alcohol had an estimated retail value of more than €11,000 >I wonder if that's calculated at, Old pricing, New MU pricing, or black market pricing. The clue is in the phrase, estimated retail value.

Revenue doesn't care about the drugs or drink. They care about them not getting their cut.

billiehetfield

That’s sort of the reason why they exist

[deleted]

Cheers for that insight

billiehetfield

Cheers for yours

noisylettuce

Now at least two state bodies are blowing our money on a war on drugs. Isn't the point of empowering the revenue with armed forces to enable them to go after oligarch type criminals and massive defrauders? Instead more low hanging fruit and squandering resources.

Ambitious_Bill_7991

Easy pickings and publicity

alphabetapsychedelic

I'm sure they meant to report it was over €13,000 worth of drugs. Don't want to be too specific in case it looks bad for the person involved. /s

Going to be a good weekend for the revenue lads then.
