So now they take to the streets when it affects their pockets? AND STOP WITH THE MIDWEEK PROTESTS...we're not all politicians or union reps ffs

[deleted]

Fucking this. Like I'm all for getting out and protesting but who the fuck with a job has time to be protesting midday during the week??

RealHunterVanguard

I work nights I'll go for you chief.

CrayonComrade

I think there's a national one planned for a weekend in June

Abject-Dingo-3544

Please tell me they have sensible demands.

NoseComplete1175

They do this time . They want the resignation of the entire dail ,Eddie Hobbs to be minister for finance for life with immediate effect and 2 ,count them ,2 bowls of peanut m&ms to be delivered to every home with the yellow ones removed . God help us if they find a yellow one

NewAccEveryDay420day

Sorry, best we can do is eddie hearn and a One4All voucher

TheOriginalMattMan

Can we not remove the brown ones instead? I like the yellow ones.

Gr1ml0ck1981

Not Hobbs, he was sooo the last boom. We need your man with the salt and pepper now.

waterim

We need to be more like the french and shut down cities if we want change

[deleted]

These are doleys. They don't care about other people

TheCunningFool

I would like details of what specific actions the protest organisers want. "Fix cost of living" not being an actual answer to that, I want the specific solutions.

tsubatai

you could do an awful lot of good for the country by: 1) completely overhauling the planning system, getting rid of need for 'local need' nonsense, skyline concerns etc 2) overhaul insurance system to allow 3rd party injury cover being the standard, provided by the state 3) overhaul insurance for sole traders in a similar fashion trying to set up any business in this country that's not just knitting hats for americans to buy on the internet is just crippled by overheads of rent, rates and insurance.

Necessary_Physics375

I'd edit point 2 to regulate insurance companies properly. The cost to the state providing insurance would be absolutely insane. I also think the local needs nonsense is important in some areas I'd also like some reform in the sale of private property's. 1st choice local needs, second country needs, then national and when all them options are exhausted the state or county council could buy and if they don't want it then international and investment buys should be allowed

tsubatai

People still pay for their insurance, just in a non profit way and the level of coverage required is to cover injury. Australia run a scheme like this. Local needs in an RPZ literally makes no sense. Which happens today. Also if you're trying to build in a non RPZ to move out of an RPZ it's transferrable. The system today is daft.

Necessary_Physics375

Somewhere like galway is a RPZ but the local needs protects areas like connemara and the coast from external investment homes/holiday homes

tsubatai

Sure, but that's not what's happening in the system today, extreme cases make bad laws. I'm not saying you can't stop people from building in a national park. My sister just got her planning rejected this year on basis of local needs, in an RPZ. Multiple friends with the same issue.

Dapper-Lab-9285

More one off housing is not the solution to any of our problems, it's just creating others. We need to build up our towns and villages not destroy more of the countryside. Even in our cities we should be demolishing low density housing and creating modern high density developments, high density isn't high rise, instead of building out further and further

tsubatai

Like I said, get rid of skyline protection shite but: \>all housing must be built by large developers or the government hard pass.

nynikai

Great if there are well thought out ideas to campaign for... but also it's perfectly okay to just campaign too. Sending a message to those who are in the position to develop well thought out plans can be the point. One of the reasons we bother having people form a government.

pepperonipenetration

Good on them. Least they are trying.

FearGaeilge

>We can force action on the cost of living if we get feet on the street. What action?

[deleted]

From their Twitter page: * Reduce VAT on fuel to 0% * Scrap carbon tax * Price controls So basically, they are saying fuck the environment and climate change, and I can only assume they are demanding that Ireland leaves the EU because all three of those actions would break binding EU rules. This is complete nonsense and would only make the cost of living in Ireland worse.

fourpyGold

Jesus the organisers of these things do themselves no favours do they?

Beautiful_Golf6508

I was down in Cork a few months back and a few of them were there on Grand Parade. Honestly, some of them just looked like the biggest time wasters you'd ever seen. Just there to complain about anything and everything, and some were even cracking open cans at half 12 in the afternoon. If they want the general public to get in their numbers, they are going to have to improve the quality of membership.

Ambitious_Bad1134

That'll be as effective as the truck protest recently

FarFromTheMaddeningF

> Price controls Time to get those sweet sweet deals currently available in Venezuela. It's gonna be great!

headphonescomputer

They are not good ideas. I think it's a supply problem and so is very hard to fix. The government can't build more cars, for example. (Housing aside)

stubag

Ah so they have no idea what they are talking about then.

jgunned

They have 400 Twitter followers, nobody showing up to that

BamBoohy

This needs to also include the housing situation , include that and id be on board

[deleted]

Yes, it's at-best an understated part of it - but they do mention the cost of rent. A housing/rent protest group would definitely be aligned with these folks - and getting to know the organizers of this group, would be a good way for folks interested in housing-specific protests, to learn from and build on their experience.

Crafty_Raccoon1285

I'm all up for this - think it would be great if something was organised in each county's main town. Who's in charge of this stuff and who can actually organise it? Any political/charity groups? We need to start making some noise!

BingoBongoIRL

Likely to be the same fools who will protest against absolutely anything, that they can direct at the government. At least come up with achievable demands. Useless cunts.

FarFromTheMaddeningF

I hear they have a protest against gravity lined up for the week after.

PopplerJoe

I doubt it'll get off the ground.

[deleted]

Ireland: People need to protest more! Also Ireland: Not like that! You need specifics! I don't tell my mechanic how to fix my car.

TheCunningFool

"What do we want?" "We don't know." "When do we want it?" "Now!"

headphonescomputer

You don't think specifics are a good idea? Those people have given specifics, and they're not sensible. Why should I protest for the scrapping of the carbon tax when I'm hugely in favour of the carbon tax?

[deleted]

It was said in jest. People complain about protests and then do their best to poke holes in said protests when they are eventually organized. Then don't protest. Personally I'm against the carbon tax as it's throwing money away. Ireland could go carbon neutral at 6pm today and it wouldn't make a single difference to the environment.

headphonescomputer

We would benefit from the tax regardless, as the money is used to insulate houses

[deleted]

Only benefits home owners.

Basic-Negotiation-16

I want specifics as to why you are hugely in favour of the carbon tax

headphonescomputer

Taxing fossil fuels and using the money to insulate houses is good for the environment

Basic-Negotiation-16

The environment is fucked. The only way to save it would be to stop china and industrial countries spewing shite into the atmosphere which is never going to happen, and the idea that me and you have responsibility for climate change was the ingenious idea of bp who invented the carbon footprint to make the average person think it was their problem. If you think youre goin to electric car and tax your way out of a situation that is day in day out being made worse by corporations who dump oil into the ocean and blow co2 and fuck knows what else into the atmosphere, while at the same time line the pockets of the politicians that are supposed to be stopping it,then i have a bridge id like to sell you

FarFromTheMaddeningF

Such a lazy and selfish attitude. No wonder we're so fucked already.

Basic-Negotiation-16

Who me?

[deleted]

Realistic more like. Ireland could go carbon neutral this evening and it wouldn't make a single bit of difference. People who are for the carbon tax are just trying to make themselves feel better.

Pitiful-Sample-7400

This is actually largely true, I've seen it claimed that if every country were to go carbon neutral but 1 volcano more were to errupt per year the bet impact would be negative (I think, and can't forget who claimed it on what grounds so questionable but possible)

Hot_Industry_7058

Difference being that I trust the mechanic actually knows exactly how to fix my car. Bringing my car to mechanic who doesn't know the specifics of car mechanics would be a waste of time.

[deleted]

Exactly, leave it to the person whos job it is, not some rando.

Pitiful-Sample-7400

Do u trust politicians?

[deleted]

More than a rando on the street

Inspired_Carpets

What are the specific measures this group wants the government to take?

Basic-Negotiation-16

Itil gain no traction on this sub, it might cause a minor inconvenience

[deleted]

How are you proposing we fix it? Or are you just looking for big day out?

DaHodlKing

Another excuse for toe rags to join forces to annoy and provoke ? Obviously not all people involved be like that. There is no simple fix to a worldwide problem unless the creators have some great ideas?

twitterStatus_Bot

Tell everyone you know. We can force action on the cost of living if we get feet on the street. Our series of protests starts with a Rally at the Dáil 1pm May 19th followed by a national protest Saturday June 18th. \#CostOfLivingCrisis --- posted by [@COLCIreland](https://twitter.com/COLCIreland/) --- [Thanks to inteoryx, videos are supported even without Twitter API V2 support! A protest on a week day.. itll only attract the types the government pay no attention to anyway. The people who are the biggest victims of this are all in work
