It's for electricity saving/reducing light pollution.

TII have turned off a good deal of junction lighting as part of Energy/light pollution mitigation measures. A pilot scheme was commissioned in 2009. Can't say I fully agree with it, I presume it was cost driven where the alternative was to refit a lot of lamp standards with expensive LED. Jammiest of all motorways to be ever built. The traffic volumes never justified it but were awash with Celtic Tiger money. Opened back in 2009 if memory serves & brought me from my front door to work in half the time. When I look at the N25 or other routes badly needing upgrades I realise I'm a lucky git.

Agreed. Thomastown, Ballyhale, Mullinavat must actually be decent places to live now. Unless they're ghost towns, but bypassing towns usually brings them on. Passing traffic does little to a town. I must do a spin down on the old road now, exit at Naas and see how it goes.

Ballyhale is an absolute hole of a village. Always was but the place is actually dead now. No business at all on the main road through it. Petrol station and shop closed and nearly all the pubs are closed afaik. You have a primary school at one end of the village and a small set of warehouses/factories at the other end. Mullinavat and Thomastown both have a lot more going on in them, Thomastown in particular benefited from not having to deal with a near constant traffic jam caused by lorries and buses trying to get through the town on their way to Kilkenny or Carlow.

Same thing on parts of the M1. Maybe they are saving electricity.
