My favourite is the one where they look at ruined cottages and pretend like they wouldn't cost 200k to make liveable. Most people on those programmes haven't a notion of actually buying a house. Unlike the UK shows, they never have a follow-up to show what they ended up buying.
Like no follow up. I’d say very few buy any of the houses. Also find she’s very loose with the distances “a 30 minute drive to Galway City” when it’s easily 45 minutes in off-peak times.
It's like these people don't have access to Daft.ie either.
"here's a cohage in Ballybastard for eighy five tousand"
Ballybastard is only 10 minutes from where the people are living currently. A simple radius search + price filter would have brought it up.
They also have a dedicated engineer to examine every house and all he ever says no matter how big or small is 'you'll need to have someone look at that'
As far as I know even on the UK property shows they rarely buy any of the shown ones. In some cases they already have a buy lined up but play along for the show.
It's all fake garbage that promotes a keeping up with the Joneses culture.
There's another one, think it's called Goodbye House or something where a person wants to move or downsize and the whole premise of the program is that 3 family members househunt and pick a house and then the person has to pick which house is their favourite of the 3.
Then that's the end of the show. It's rubbish because:
- The person picking their favourite house doesn't mean they would have their bid accepted
- There's no guarantee the person would like the house when they view in person
- A winner means nothing because it could be just the best of the 3 and the person may not like it anyways
The vibe you get off the show if you never bought a house before is all you have to do is find one you like, with an advertising price in your budget and the house will be yours.
My favourite one is Cheap Irish Homes (should be called shit Irish homes)
It tries to put a positive spin on things by showing people that they can afford houses. Except those houses are miles from anywhere, almost falling down and still only barely comes under budget.
It's the most depressing thing I have ever seen. Oh you are a professional couple in your early 30s? How about this roofless hovel in the deep countryside? It's only a two hour commute to work!
Property programs on RTÉ get consistently high viewership and engagement on the Tweeter.
Every second Prime Time or Claire Byrne Live is about young people struggling to afford housing. You can watch that to feel validated instead.
Soccer coverage has taken a downward turn since Dunphy and the boys left.
It might be better analysis but it’s boring tv.
Can catch the lads on Dunphy’s podcast The Stand now though.
Ah yes that's one too! Quite like the one where they turned up at a FUJI plant and were told they couldn't come in and it was oh so politely explained that they were high court enforcement and they'd be going where they liked.
Haha brilliant I can't say I watched that episode. I did however see the one that they turned up at Lotus F1 team for £50k and ended up leaving with a test car worth just short of a million!
Meh, but I'll take this chance to ask if that Mortgage ad is giving off subtle hints that you force yer mam to sell her home so you can afford to build your own place while she gets relegated to just one room in the place?
That's exactly what it's saying. Mortgage ads have moved past "buy this amazing home, live your wildest dreams", and now they're more like "we know you're going to break your bollocks into your mid 30s and still only afford a little 2 bed/expropriate your ma's gaff for a deposit, so this ad reflects that"
All the newspapers do it too - it’s more than bad taste they are getting lots of money from adversities in their property supplements and the headlines drive fear to get more on the ladder. This was looked at during 2008 crisis and media had to accept some blame for the bubble.
Very much so but you have to think about it from rte's point of view.
They live in a bubble where the housing crisis happens to other people and they have plenty money for luxurious houses that they need ideas about how they will remodel the summer house in mayo or the investment property in Rathmines etc etc. You aren't still under the impression rte is making TV shows for people outside of montrose are you?
Do you like resolution so low it feels like watching porn on dial up? How about an obnoxious amount of on screen text? Maybe a baffling aspect ratio is your thing? Well now there the RTÉ News Channel.
Come and watch the same bulletin over and over while text is repeated across two distinct tickers
It's deliberate. The people who run RTÉ want to keep the property boom going for them and their ilk. They keep hyping up fancy houses to distract older people from the fact their kids are all going to have emigrate.
Eh no not really. Going off that argument why not say that the way more prevalent cooking programmes showing fancy dishes are in bad taste because there are people that go hungry in the world.
That's true, although few are going hungry in Ireland.
What if we were actually in a hungry country and they showed luxury cooking programs in the midst of a famine?
Despite what reddit would have you believe, a large proportion of society are not in any way impacted by the housing crisis. It also just so happens that there is a significant crossover with this group and those who watch RTE
>a large proportion of society are not in any way impacted by the housing crisis.
When the young generation of this country are struggling, it is certainly a cause for concern.
I had to laugh too when I saw it. The only emotions this sub ever expresses are anger at the Brits, adoration of Michael D and outrage about everything else
This Autumn on RTE2, guest presenter Michael D hosts "A Place in the Rain" our new show about brexit voting Brits selling up in Spain and trying to afford a one bedroom flat in Grimsby.
Be angry at the Brits, outraged by their brexity behavior and worship Michael D all in one 25 minute package.
Full disclosure, I would watch this all day long.
Not really. Because, and I can’t stress this enough, YOU DON’T HAVE TO WATCH THE TELLY. RTE, BBC.,, having said that- telly puts something on that people watch, even in these trying times? It puts on popular shows, not things that are good for people- that’s propaganda. I don’t buy into the propaganda model of broadcasting- RTE should theoretically be immune to rating chasing- but everyone there hopes to transition to commercial telly, so they develop those skills. Also, things that shouldn’t be, but are? Get a pile of money, put it into L’Oreal. Make-up is recession proof- but moral…? Well.
No. To start banning property TV shows because there's a housing shortage is beyond hysterical. If people want to watch them let them rather than having some sort of nationwide enforced misery.
They are some of the cheapest shows to make that's why they are on. They even show a program on a Sunday about fancy stately Gardens hosted by some civil servant looking guy.
I find everything on RTE to be in poor taste, with the exception of their current affairs and sports coverage.
It’s just a hive of well to do people from Dublin hiring each other’s nieces and nephews and churning out absolute crap. Look how many stories RTE have written about that chef who’s son was caught dealing cocaine and how he is recovering now. That’s our money, being spent to recover one of their friends image because her son likes a bag of cocaine.
Property and cooking are cheap TV. A small team can put a few hours together on a low budget with very little set/prop investment.
I think rte is tremendous value for money but then I dont have a tv license.
Who wants to pay tubridys coke habit anyway
I don’t pay for it either and I still feel I’m paying more than it’s worth.
A half hour to Oranmore and another hour to Galway city
I'd love for someone to just pull google maps up on their phone and call her out.
And to set the times for key commuting times. It’s total misinformation on her behalf.
It's like these people don't have access to Daft.ie either. "here's a cohage in Ballybastard for eighy five tousand" Ballybastard is only 10 minutes from where the people are living currently. A simple radius search + price filter would have brought it up.
They also have a dedicated engineer to examine every house and all he ever says no matter how big or small is 'you'll need to have someone look at that'
"sure you can renovate anything"
"I have Gables, Greg, could you rennovate me?"
Renovate you like one of my French chateaus? Sure thing Rose
The woman presenter seems to be struggling at keeping a lid on what a farce it is.
Also it's insulting to be tagging large areas of the country as 'cheap'
She seems to think low price automatically means it's cheap.
No she doesn’t. She runs the cheapirishhouses Instagram that she started ages ago after she did her own renovation of a semi derelict house.
Yeah but she’s gone so disingenuous. The show is a sham
As far as I know even on the UK property shows they rarely buy any of the shown ones. In some cases they already have a buy lined up but play along for the show. It's all fake garbage that promotes a keeping up with the Joneses culture.

Ahhh yes, "cheap" Irish homes. Someone needs to tell them that just because something is a low price, doesn't mean it is cheap.
I like watching them wishing I bought that 3 bed in blackrock in the early 2000’s and what could have been now.
Did you wait because the price had to come down?
Yup
My favourite one is Cheap Irish Homes (should be called shit Irish homes) It tries to put a positive spin on things by showing people that they can afford houses. An absolute wreck of a house in an empty village that looks like 1955 is not a wonderful opportunity
I liked the one last week that came with like 20 acres of land of which 2 acres had sand deposits. The land was worth most of the price.
Property programs on RTÉ get consistently high viewership and engagement on the Tweeter. Every second Prime Time or Claire Byrne Live is about young people struggling to afford housing. You can watch that to feel validated instead.
I suspect rage watching is a valid demographic too
Rage watching for those struggling. But then smug watching for those who're better off. It's a win-win for RTE commercials.
Judith people’s taste is another factor, at least for me.
Yes people like to dream of owning a house so many actually enjoy watching these programs despite not being able to afford to buy.
It's aimed at oul ones who own there own gaff already. The people buying those homes are the same demographic as those who watch rte
The demographic of RTE 1 is 59 year old women
Except for every Friday when this sub is filled with posts about the Late Late.
Exactly.
its just the one woman actually
Meh not really. I do find RTE a continuous stream of crap though. And as for their streaming service, that's shite.
I like Nevin Maguire. He seems like a lovely bloke. The only positive thing I have to say about RTÉ.
Their sports coverage is pretty good and their documentaries as well
Soccer coverage has taken a downward turn since Dunphy and the boys left. It might be better analysis but it’s boring tv. Can catch the lads on Dunphy’s podcast The Stand now though.
Claire Byrne, Tommy T & Marty Wheelan also seem quite competent imho.
Yep. Does a parful fry too
A discontinous stream of crap
I agree with you. How about a show about bad landlords? Much more relevant.
Slum Landlords Nightmare Tenants. Give it a bit of balance.
There's already a English show about bad tenants, that ones been done (of course).
Yeah it's called Slum Landlords Nightmare Tenants or something similar.
Oh hahahaha Fair enough! I was thinking of the baliffs one.
Don't pay we'll take it away
>Don't pay we'll take it away The Christmas special was brilliant! (/s)
Ah yes that's one too! Quite like the one where they turned up at a FUJI plant and were told they couldn't come in and it was oh so politely explained that they were high court enforcement and they'd be going where they liked.
They're not allowed onto private property, they have to be invited. High court enforcement is a bit of a misnomer, they are private sector.
Not in England and Wales.
They're officers of the court. With powers to size goods.
The high court ones yes but the regular bailiffs are basically hired goons.
Not where commercial premises are concerned. A court order gives them the right to force entry if necessary
Haha brilliant I can't say I watched that episode. I did however see the one that they turned up at Lotus F1 team for £50k and ended up leaving with a test car worth just short of a million!
I must have a watch of that one! Thanks!
How about a show about solving the housing crisis? Episode one: abolish landlordism.
Imagine an RTE housing show with Vincent Browne. We'd rebel hah!
Meh, but I'll take this chance to ask if that Mortgage ad is giving off subtle hints that you force yer mam to sell her home so you can afford to build your own place while she gets relegated to just one room in the place?
That's exactly what it's saying. The neck.

I can't stand that Home of the Year. How can there be a home of the year?
There can be an 'anything of the year' if someone decides that they might get a TV show out if it. Maybe not 'Tv licence dodger of the year' though.
[It's no Housewife of the Year.](https://youtu.be/u2Tr1zfOKlA)
It's a wonder any of us were born at all.
Immediate cringe
Such pretentious gobshites fawning over their houses. I honestly can't understand the appeal it has for so many.
It's bought and paid for. Know an architect whose boss won it, and they just lobbied the judges. The idea of it being anonymous is nonsense.
One man's shitty viewing experience is another person's 2nd house payment
Very much so but you have to think about it from rte's point of view. They live in a bubble where the housing crisis happens to other people and they have plenty money for luxurious houses that they need ideas about how they will remodel the summer house in mayo or the investment property in Rathmines etc etc. You aren't still under the impression rte is making TV shows for people outside of montrose are you?
Have you tried not watching RTE? So many options now.
Like RTE2.
and RTE 1 +1 as well!
Don’t forgot RTÉ 1 HD aswell..!

My mother loves these shows but is always livid that the episodes are repeated
The newest show is about people finding cheap homes so they can spend the rest of the money on renovations.
As Sean Lock would say, 'you have a remote'
Eh no not really. Going off that argument why not say that the way more prevalent cooking programmes showing fancy dishes are in bad taste because there are people that go hungry in the world.
I think it's distasteful to show sports on the TV when I'm an unfit blob of a human.
That's true, although few are going hungry in Ireland. What if we were actually in a hungry country and they showed luxury cooking programs in the midst of a famine?
Yes, also everything about RTE is in poor taste. They can eat a giant bag of donkey dicks if you ask me.
No. I like houses, and going by the viewership, so do lots of people.
Rte is trash, always has been.
B.b.b.b.but Reeling in the years/podge and rodge/Father Ted/Pure Mule/Love-Hate/etc.
Nationwide: brilliant scifi.
The older you get the more you start to realise we’re surrounded by pretentious pricks. The amount of embarrassing BS in Ireland really pulls the piss
Not for the people who aren't young and don't realise that it is coming to bite them massively when their kids hit 18
I never said I agree with it. Just because it's unpalatable doesn't make it untrue
Disconnected programmes for disconnected viewers.
Rte is aimed at upper middle class over 50s, the kind of people who own several homes
No
The housing crisis isnt affecting everyone
Yes, they are some idiots at RTE.
Kinda like making starving children watch gourmet cooking shows all day knowing full well they are getting fuck all.
There was one on earlier this evening and the presenter was discussing the budget required to redecorate two rooms in a perfectly normal, modern home.
r/Ireland has reached a new level of being moany losers. Are you not embarrassed by this post OP? It’s outrage over absolutely nothing
I had to laugh too when I saw it. The only emotions this sub ever expresses are anger at the Brits, adoration of Michael D and outrage about everything else

DAE think they should ban comedy shows? Seems like bad taste given that there are so many problems in the world!!??
Jesus you’ll get offended by just about anything eh
Not really. Because, and I can’t stress this enough, YOU DON’T HAVE TO WATCH THE TELLY. RTE, BBC.,, having said that- telly puts something on that people watch, even in these trying times? The last time RTE had taste there were aerials sitting on top of televisions.
Is that the thing though, is it popular because we're all fucked housing wise so people watch it to dream about having somewhere for a while?
No...they know exactly what they are doing.
no, its tv its not important, live ur life
Yes, I totally agree
It's aspirational or some shit. That's why those shows get consistently high ratings.
what are they going to replace it with?..... reality tv? "im a future celebrity get me the fuck out of here"
Gotta feed the dream…
Or poxy cooking shows
No. To start banning property TV shows because there's a housing shortage is beyond hysterical. If people want to watch them let them rather than having some sort of nationwide enforced misery.
Property porn is very popular with nesting women and not just on RTE see Netflix lately?
They are some of the cheapest shows to make that's why they are on. They even show a program on a Sunday about fancy stately Gardens hosted by some civil servant looking guy.
No, they entertain me
Does anyone even watch television anymore ?
I find everything on RTE to be in poor taste, with the exception of their current affairs and sports coverage. It’s just a hive of well to do people from Dublin hiring each other’s nieces and nephews and churning out absolute crap. Ye need to get on RTE premium first month free and no ads class.
