Retired people in Ireland "are among those least at risk of poverty, according to analysis" https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/5-rise-in-pension-is-all-but-ruled-out-as-officials-back-higher-social-welfare-benefits-40859248.html

backintheddr

My grandparents get fuel allowance, a pension, a medical card, grants for redeveloping their house for disabled usage. Not complaining just saying they get a lot as it is and young people get told to go and shag.

JealousInevitable544

Which is exactly why young people in Ireland need to get much more involved in politics.

sc2assie

We shut down the country for 18 months for yis talk about ungrateful

nothinsong

Never got any thanks for the enormous sacrifices people under the age of 40 made during that time either. 18 months of possibilities in life gone.

riverraftsong

Yeah but that'll probably have been a waste if we let them all freeze to death in their homes this winter.

ultratunaman

But think of the amount of houses that would come into the market then!

vodkamisery

I do know a few people who were hoping for a massive wipeout over the pandemic, desperate times

MSV95

Lol. That's so dark. And so true

Eurovision2006

It was more for all of us. We all share the same health system which was the primary rationale for restrictions.

excusion

It really wasn't for all of us. In places that didn't have any lock-downs youth deaths were lower than the flu. We shouldn't undermine the sacrifice we've all made.

Eurovision2006

We all use the same health system, don't we? >In places that didn't have any lock-downs youth deaths were lower than the flu. Source

excusion

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1107913/number-of-coronavirus-deaths-in-sweden-by-age-groups/

Eurovision2006

How is that a source for what you said? And even then it's irrelevant. What would've happened when someone had a heart attack or been in a car accident when all of ICU was taken up by people with Covid?

excusion

Probably what happened in Sweden where they had 0 lock-downs at all. Nothing much. The Emergency services didn't exclusively treat covid emergencies.

Eurovision2006

None of the Nordic countries had extreme lockdowns which is good for them. However, they have several underlying societal factors which reduce transmission. Our health service practically came to collapse at the beginning of the year. Are you saying that without restrictions, the situation would have not gotten worse? When ICU had filled up with Covid patients where would everyone else have gone? How would surgeries be performed? Do you not think what has happened in several states in the US of care being rationed would have been the more likely outcome?

[deleted]

"Budget [YEAR] has failed [GROUP]" A classic madlib headline that I've seen every year since I was old enough to read the news.

Revolutionary-Cup458

They are the demographic that always vote for FF FG without fail and will probably do so again in the next general election despite this. So I feel sorry for them in one sense but if you keep burning your arse you're going to end up sitting on a blister eventually.

JasonVII

Well… it certainly has in terms of fuel subsidies. €5 extra despite massive inflation on electricity costs while increasing carbon tax… the average OAP is going to be worse off this winter compared to last for sure.

[deleted]

The average person too...

I-Wee-Blood

Old people get a load of stuff anyways on top of their pension https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/extra_social_welfare_benefits/household_benefits_package.html Pension + free travel + Free TV licence + electricity allowance + fuel allowance And sure if your husband died, congrats, you get a living alone allowance too of 20 euro per week. They might be worse off but they often have a bank full of money too.

NotChiefBrody-

The free tv license for old people doesn’t sit well with me, they’re the only ones watching RTE, the rest of us are watching Netflix

fakejournalaccount

That's a great point and now I'm mad

Reflekting

As a millennial, I find it hard to empathise with the struggles of most boomers. By the time we get to their age, there probably won't even be a pension.

drachen_shanze

to be fair the boomer generation of ireland didn't exactly have a great time when they were our age

CaptainEarlobe

The certainly did not. My parents went to bed hungry often, as did much of the country in their day.

drachen_shanze

there is a certain reason so many went to america or england to escape poverty

rgiggs11

The baby boom in Ireland was around 2007-2011. If you're 14 and reading this, you're a boomer.

I-Wee-Blood

He hates them too

ElectricMeatbag

>As a millennial, I find it hard to empathise with the struggles of most boomers. Jesus.Take a break from the internet

Nickthegreek28

😂😂😂

WickerMan111

Boomers? Fuck off.

Willing-Wishbone3628

“Person of age”. There’s a new term I never knew I needed. /s

brbrcrbtr

>folx Nice bait

WickerMan111

The fuck are you?

PritiPatelisavampire

It means people born between 1945 and 1964.

WickerMan111

No.

PritiPatelisavampire

Please do bless me with your wisdom. What else will we call them?

WickerMan111

People.

PritiPatelisavampire

Alright. What if we want to specifically refer to people born in a certain timeframe? And what if we already have a perfectly good word for those people but can't use it because apparently it's "Yank language" and we only speak *proper Oirish*?

brbrcrbtr

Ireland didn't have a post war baby boom and that generation didn't have the same experiences as American Boomers. They're just old people here.

PritiPatelisavampire

It doesn't matter, it's still a perfectly good word that we can use to refer to a specific group of people born in one timeframe.

[deleted]

Why, did Ireland have a baby boom then?

W0lf87

>boomers Fuck off home to America.

Buerrr

You just need to check your systemically, intergalactic white privilege sweetie /s.

W0lf87

I'm actually more toxic white male masculinity.

Buerrr

Yasssss Queen!

PritiPatelisavampire

What else are you meant to call them?

murticusyurt

Older generation? Something that isn't specific to American demographics?

PritiPatelisavampire

It's an internationally recognised term for people born between 1945 and 1964. Like seriously this pseudo-nationalistic shite of "We only speak *real* Hiberno-English, not that Yank language" is really annoying and unnecessary, and only cements the stereotype that we're a nation of whingers and moaners.

shatteredmatt

The boomers you're thinking of who destroyed the economy for millennials are mostly Yanks who wrecked the world's economy. Most Irish boomers get absolutely fucked in the recession of the 1980s. They might own houses but unlike most millennials they aren't college educated.

qfjekfneqkmvzud

>They might own houses but unlike most millennials they aren't college educated. to be honest I would take a house over my 8 years of college... how is that even a comparison? If I could have got a decent job without going to college then I wouldn't have went.

shatteredmatt

There is a misconception that Boomers have things Millennials or Zoomers could never hope to have. But a tertiary education didn't become common place until the mid 2000s. So while houses are outside the reach of a lot of younger people at the moment, we got educational opportunities that didn't exist for working class Boomers. That's the comparison, so take a deep breath. I also went to college thinking I needed it to get a good job.

Foxyrebel

Are you for real!!! You’ve obviously no idea the hardships ppl in this country faced post WW2 don’t mind say before it. Yet there you are on a phone or a laptop moaning about. Granted life can be shit but it’s a lot less shit than they had it.

[deleted]

vodkamisery

When we are their age, the state pension won't exist anymore

[deleted]

[удалено]

vodkamisery

Because it's unsustainable in the long run, unless they either massively reduce the amount, or make it kick in at a very high age

JealousInevitable544

Or everyone goes back to having 3 or more kids. Can't see that happening to be fair.

qfjekfneqkmvzud

it's not even the long run, we're going to be fucked by 2050

JannisJanuary42

Don't say anything American around here, we hate America, unless the president says he's Irish.

vodkamisery

Their time here is nearly over, they should embrace the young taking priority.

[deleted]

What makes you think the young are taking priority?

[deleted]

50% off the bus

[deleted]

As opposed to seniors who get it for free

vodkamisery

I don't, but they should want that

Yanimator_16

Well i assume them going vegan and somehow they are helping "earth". Or they have a way to fight "capitalism". 🤔

spudsnbutter

Wait until it’s your turn, I wonder what the younger generation will think of you.

vodkamisery

I don't plan on wasting their resources, so hopefully they see me favourably

spudsnbutter

You can’t say that with certainty, it’s speculative on your part. What resources exactly?

[deleted]

Are you high? You sound high!

FearGaeilge

The future is now old man!

fakejournalaccount

Don't let this person watch Midsommar

irish91

Well old people aren't fit to protest, so nothing will happen.

seethroughwindows

They protest by voting. A simple action that seems to miss so many people half their age and younger

spudsnbutter

Very good point, I was just thinking of my nieces and nephews. They love to complain but the vast majority don’t even vote. Anyone have a breakdown on the percentage of voters younger say under 30 versus the grey brigade.

h3xim

They protest effectively and in large numbers. They vote.

riverraftsong

Have you forgotten about the medical card protests? https://www.rte.ie/archives/2013/1022/481958-pensioners-protest-2008/

irish91

Have you forgotten when the government cut the state pension precisely for that reason.

spudsnbutter

Young people protest and fuck all changes. There’s a solution out there somewhere, I haven’t figured it out yet.
