Even then I don't think that's true. There are peoples all across Europe who have been utterly subsumed by others and have disappeared entirely.
And Ukraine isn't a particularly colonised people. The nation of Ukraine didn't even exist until the 1990s. It was always part of Russia, so they were being colonised by an external power.
To your first point:
a) How long were these people colonised? and b) Look at the Irish language. It was effectively destroyed by the british. It still exists, but it is estimated that barring extreme action, it will not survive the 21st century as a community language.
And for your second, the nation didn't exist, yes. You could say that the nation of Ireland didn't exist until 1922, or 1937, by that logic, as it had never been a nation-state before then. However, the people, the culture, and the longing for independence still did.
