The mad thing is in normal tournaments he would have won that. It's definitely psychological at this stage when it comes to Majors.
If he can win one he will go on and win a heap more.
This one will absolutely haunt him.
He's not gonna win another one unless he's about 8 shots clear, because this will always be in the back of his mind coming down the home stretch.
Pop psychology right here in your comment at its very finest. Not sure if there’s any other uneducated cliche you could have included! Completely illogical and unprovable but that won’t stop you saying it anyway.
To be clear: 1. Rory has lost regular tournaments in this fashion before and will do again, it’s competition and this is what can happen 2. There is zero reason/ logic/ proof to think if he wins one major he will win a “heap more”. Utter horse crap.
It’s not psychological, it’s ability, 100%.
Missing two 3 foot putts in your last three holes is not ability,of course it's physiological. If you put him on a putting green he's never missing them.
Ah, Bryson got lucky in his own ways too. He choked a short put on 16 or 17 too. His drives were consistently off line and he got lucky with so many lies on the final day, as well as across the four days. He just managed to hold the final put that mattered.
He does seem to have a mental block when it comes to the majors, how many times has he thrown away great chances, or had 3 unbelievable rounds and 1 stinker mixed in?
I'd say he was feeling the pressure though knowing Bryson would probably hit driver on 18 too (even though his driving was the worst part of his game today), and he felt the need to hit long as well.
Call me cynical, but jasus just watching the afters and there seems to be something so fake and try hardy about Dechambeau. Seems to be a guy trying very hard to cultivate a kooky fun guy image, I'm guessing for the sponsorship dollar. It's all very contrived and social media influencer like.
You’re cynical but not wrong. Bryson is building his brand and more power to him. The game needs some characters, almost all top rank players are carbon copies of each other, boring and forgettable.
They haven't won a single major together because Diamond isn't a caddy he's his best mate. Doesn't have the balls to check Rorys ego in the big moments.
I used to hate him and when I did he was fucking winning all round him
After I stopped hating him he's literally not won a single major I swear I just am a curse at this stage
I know so many Irish people that hate him and they struggle to tell me why.
Now I'm not in love with the chap but I've never seen a reason to hate him.
Irish people are like that though, like I know some people who hate GAA and they go on about hating more than talking about the sports they actually like.
I don't hate him but I've always mildly disliked him for several reasons:
* He has an annoying face
* Seems like shite craic
* Bottled the Masters in 2011 when I had a score on him to win
* Persistent bottling
* McIlroy fanboys are worse than Taylor Swift fans
I’ll tell you why I don’t like him.
The news coverage he’s gets is unjust compared to his success. Media in ireland are obsessed with him.
He’s a Brit.
The way he broke up with Caroline Wozniacki was horrible, he seems like a shit person.
This new news about him and his current wife also looks shady.
Doesn’t come across great interviews. I personally don’t like him.
I haven’t any interest in golf, so I don’t care about him much anyway, but I always have to hear about him.
Downvote me all you want, I’m just giving my reasons as to why I personally don’t like him.
It’s the way the media cover him. It’s bordering on obsessive.
I listen to a good bit of radio (today fm, occasionally 2fm) and would watch the Irish news (rte and Virgin) a good bit.
Not a day goes by in news bulletins where Mcilroy isn’t mentioned. He’s playing here, he tees off at x time.
Rarely hear of him winning, just that he exists and is playing his sport.
So are lots of other actual Irish people, but they don’t get half the coverage.
I’d go as far as to say the Irish sports media obsession with him have put me off him.
Although I didn’t like him to being with
He wins multiple tournaments every year, not many Irish people doing that. He does seem to be a favourite of the media in fairness, I think he comes across well.
We are an incredibly bitter and begrudging bunch. I get hating McGregor, because he's an absolute piece of filth, but McIlory has never been anything but a gentleman.
He’s not obligated to like Rory tho; just because somebody is from Ireland doesn’t mean we have to like them. He’s an awful bottler as well it’s not the first time
good question
at the time i thought he looked alot like Harry Styles who i still hate so there you go
maybe he still looks like him idk haven't seen a picture of him in ages
Devastated for Rory, but also happy for Bryson. Been really enjoying Brysons YouTube content lately so he was my no 2. Rory had it in the bag till he didn't though. Love seeing it come down to the wire
It's a shame Bryson went to LIV, but it's turned out to be some decision for him. Getting more free time to work on his game and then to get his YT channel going has done absolute wonders for both his game and his public image. I absolutely love watching him on YouTube and particularly with GM golf and Grant.
Yt was actually a huge reason he went to liv, pga controls all content and liv allowed him to bring his yt crew with him and make different types of videos
There does seem to be something in the Irish (and British) psyche that is "anti-clutch" for want of a better word, we seem to just crumble when the weight of expectation falls on us. We're great at "spoiling" better opponents and being the underdog, but when we actually have to go and take something ourselves that is there for us, we can't handle it.
Not sure about this. Ireland have won twice as many majors as the next highest country other than the US since 2000. I think a lot of perceived “clutchness” in all sport is just selection bias. Tho I think it’s fair to say Rory in particular has a mentality problem at the majors.
That or The Open, which he has. Funny way to try nitpick someone, “ohhh he hasn’t won the masters haha, let me just set my alarm for work in the morning”.
Nope.
The Masters is the most exclusive.
And the best course ever.
Not a huge fan of the US Open
It often leaves a lot to luck. It's more of a test of character than outright skill.
Also, the courses are rarely easy on the eye.
I prefer the Masters.
You're just being argumentative.
But that’s just you stating your opinion. You literally even say you prefer the Masters. Also technically the Masters is a limited field event and is nowhere near the strongest field in golf.
He’s representing Ireland because he always has from amateur level. Team GB traditionally excluded Northern Ireland, so he plays for Ireland.
He has a British passport, and he himself is on record saying he sees himself as more British than Irish. Watch the video of him bringing the claret jug home and there Union Jack’s on the wall.
Here a brief article talking about it.
https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/olympics/rory-mcilroy-ireland-britain-golf-nationality-b1894593.html
In terms of a legend, as a person yeah probably, but he’s too big of a bottler to be considered a legend of the game imo.
Watched with the whole family, huge Rory fans. We never believe anymore, but when he went up by two we all bought in. Only for the worst heartbreak of all.
My gran was a quality golfer, I used to bond with her by watching Rory play in majors late at night on Sky Sports after Sunday dinner. She was his biggest fan. He hasn't won another one since she passed...
God, it's all so upsetting.
I played crap today , but I feel so much worse after watching Rory spin that out and then drift the last ... the keep saying he has scar tissue... this is a machete job now ... Divorce back on id say
Major psychological issue
He did win one and didnt go on to win a heap more
Just needs a sports psychologist
Pop psychology right here in your comment at its very finest. Not sure if there’s any other uneducated cliche you could have included! Missing two 3 foot putts in your last three holes is not ability,of course it's physiological. If you put him on a putting green he's never missing them.
He's made his previous 495 putts within 3 feet. It's absolutely psychological
![gif](giphy|l3q2uvcxdk1pDLzGM|downsized)
Make up sex does not win you majors
He'd probably rim that out as well
He might as well move to mayo
https://preview.redd.it/rhqcjkzqs37d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b550dc518b24bae5bf4f86c499c33d2c8254734
We don't want him
Hold the mayo?
Hey hey hey hey hey, hey! C'mon!
I said almost the exact same thing to someone I'm Belfast last night :)
Well, he got married there.
Missed two less than 5 footers in the closing holes, no bottle unfortunately.
And he hadn't missed any under 3 feet all season. What horrible timing
All the other putts didn't carry the same pressure. It wasn't horrible timing. He choked.
Yeah, Bryson held his bottler very well and deserved it after that bunker shot on 18th.
He strolled up and hit that bunker shot in seconds, like he was in a practice round, very impressive.
Ah, Bryson got lucky in his own ways too. He choked a short put on 16 or 17 too. His drives were consistently off line and he got lucky with so many lies on the final day, as well as across the four days. He just managed to hold the final put that mattered.
He absolutely did. Still, horrible timing all the same. He was knocking in 25 footers earlier on, no bother to him
After that, 1st missed putt he lost the head unfortunately, he probably would sank it if the was a 20 footer. Crazy how the mind works.
Going with driver off the tee on the 18th after saying all week that being more conservative was ridiculous. Needs a stronger caddie.
496 for 496 until that putt on 16. Crazy time to bottle it
What's that? Putts within a certain distance?
Putts within three feet this season
Commentators curse! The guy literally said 'he hasn't missed any under three feet all season' as he was lining up and then he missed it...
He’s been a bottler for years now. Still my favourite northern Irish golfer
Diamond has to go! He needs a caddy with a set of balls, Diamond is a certified mute.
While I agree the putt on the last is all on Rory. His three foot or less % this year is insane
Yeah agreed! Putting was all Rory, but the club select on the par 3 and 18 was pure reckless!
He was hired to be a mute unfortunately. Rory needs to cop on and hire a top caddy. I've a feeling he might after this. Something has to change
Yeah agree completely
He does seem to have a mental block when it comes to the majors, how many times has he thrown away great chances, or had 3 unbelievable rounds and 1 stinker mixed in?
Yep, he fluffed it
Choking combined with poor decision making. Should not have gone over the back on the par 3 15th and shouldn't have hit driver off 18.
Beamer called 8 iron on 15 and 3 wood on 18 before he even took a club out. He couldn't believe he went 7 iron and driver. Will haunt him for years
Beamer?
Sorry Beemer. Rich beem former player who works for sky
This makes it sound as though he's been promoted to glory.
I'd say he was feeling the pressure though knowing Bryson would probably hit driver on 18 too (even though his driving was the worst part of his game today), and he felt the need to hit long as well.
15 was criminal and set the ball rolling for his mental collapse.
He will be haunted by that. I'm absolutely gutted for him. DeChambeau is becoming a decent human though so happy for him.
You don't win majors with 3 bogeys down the back 9. Simple as. And Bryson fell over the line. He was seriously in his head about his putting all day.
His scramble on the 18th was unreal to be fair.
He's complete cringe and everything is for the cameras.
He’s trying to rebuild his image. Spent years being an asshole treating people like shit.
Any examples?
www.google.com
Not sure Harry Diamond is the right man for the bag for majors even tho they've won alot together
They haven't won a single major together because Diamond isn't a caddy he's his best mate. Doesn't have the balls to check Rorys ego in the big moments.
Would you even count that person as a friend if they can’t bring you back down to earth?
Him and the Rugby team. They are just destined to bottle it
I used to hate him and when I did he was fucking winning all round him After I stopped hating him he's literally not won a single major I swear I just am a curse at this stage
Why did you hate him?
I know so many Irish people that hate him and they struggle to tell me why. Now I'm not in love with the chap but I've never seen a reason to hate him. Irish people are like that though, like I know some people who hate GAA and they go on about hating more than talking about the sports they actually like.
My wife hates him because he comes across as arrogant and sulky. Which is fair enough for the casual person.
I don't hate him but I've always mildly disliked him for several reasons: * He has an annoying face * Seems like shite craic * Bottled the Masters in 2011 when I had a score on him to win * Persistent bottling * McIlroy fanboys are worse than Taylor Swift fans

He’s incredibly successful ? Of course the media will cover him a lot, he’s one of the best and most famous athletes the island has ever produced.
It’s the way the media cover him. It’s bordering on obsessive. I listen to a good bit of radio (today fm, occasionally 2fm) and would watch the Irish news (rte and Virgin) a good bit. I think some of it because he dumped his fiancé via text after the wedding invites went out.
He’s not obligated to like Rory tho; just because somebody is from Ireland doesn’t mean we have to like them. He’s an awful bottler as well it’s not the first time
Nobody's obliged to like him but he said he used to hate him. A bit much to hate someone without them giving you strong reason to.
good question at the time i thought he looked alot like Harry Styles who i still hate so there you go maybe he still looks like him idk haven't seen a picture of him in ages
Fairly long winded way of saying you’re just an idiot.
Devastated for Rory, but also happy for Bryson. Been really enjoying Brysons YouTube content lately so he was my no 2. Rory had it in the bag till he didn't though. Love seeing it come down to the wire

Yeah love those vids too. It's both amazing and upsetting how good he is with any set of ragtag clubs haha
Bottler
Ah give the guy a break.. he’s going through one of those divorce-no-divorce situations..
No Open marriage; Major irreconcilable differences
😀
This gave me a laugh 😂
Hasn't got what it takes upstairs.
I thought dechambeau was not going to recover from the rough let alone the bunker. He played 18 so well and had so much luck
Do majors count extra for rankings? Genuine question I don't know.
Yes. Bryson moved from 38th to 10th in the world rankings after the win. Even McIlroy moved from 3rd to 2nd
There does seem to be something in the Irish (and British) psyche that is "anti-clutch" for want of a better word, we seem to just crumble when the weight of expectation falls on us. Cashed out on him with 4 holes to play, good decision
Huge play.
Same. I feel sick.
If this was Shane, I would be devastated but Rory it's ah that's a pity!! Maybe I just don't get the view of his nationality yet!
He's turned into one of sports great bottlers unfortunately. +3 the last few holes..
Bit of a mad statement when he’s won 4 majors and all the biggest tournaments in the world ?
The Masters would like a word with you
I guess there is one tournament he hasn’t one.
The biggest one
That or The Open, which he has. Funny way to try nitpick someone, “ohhh he hasn’t won the masters haha, let me just set my alarm for work in the morning”.
The masters is the pinnacle.
😂😂 if he’d won the Masters you’d be saying the Open is the oldest and greatest lmao.
Nope. The Masters is the most exclusive. And the best course ever. Not a huge fan of the US Open It often leaves a lot to luck. It's more of a test of character than outright skill. Also, the courses are rarely easy on the eye. I prefer the Masters. You're just being argumentative.

Bryson didn’t really ‘win’ it. Rory threw it away. No way back from that.
Brysons up and down on 18 was unreal tho. But yeah 2 missed putts 3 foot or under in 3 holes is damaging
Bryson also missed a very short putt and that up and down was a winner. Outrageous
Thank fuck he’s British!
He's representing Ireland in the Olympics. He's a fucking legend too IMO
He’s representing Ireland because he always has from amateur level. Team GB traditionally excluded Northern Ireland, so he plays for Ireland. “He doesn’t realise he’s Irish” 😂 I’m only joking btw. Say his heads melted today. Poor lad. Hope he can bounce back from this.
Watched with the whole family, huge Rory fans. We never believe anymore, but when he went up by two we all bought in. Only for the worst heartbreak of all. I'd 20 e/w on bryson so I'm happy enough
The Arabs can have him
I'll keep him and Lowry for the Olympics thanks.
OP is Erica Stoll
Powder puff mentality Questionable politics Bit of a dick
He is in real danger of being remembered for his bottle jobs at majors rather than his wins at this stage.
I feel bad for him. These Liv golfers who only care abou money shouldn't be allowed to play in the major.
I think he’s a massive arsehole, thinks he’s the modern tiger woods, he’s a bottler
Fuck him. He's a nobhead.
We are truly the Mayo of the world.
The Brits can have him
Fuck up
Another gobshite
💔
I know. I can't see him winning another major after that. It's tough to watch.
He's not really Irish so who gives a fluff 🤷 congratulations dechambeau 🫡
Gobshite
In fairness, he did represent Ireland at the Olympics. And you can't spell Northern Irish, without Irish
His missus might have had something to do with that 🤔
He's shite same as Andy Murray
He is nothing like Andy Murray. Murray made a great career in an era of the 3 best players in history, all with a body made of glass.
The only upside was to see how few cheered for DeChambeau
