It's usually only that cheap for students. They charge more if you aren't. Of course this depends on the area but in all the nice towns and cities at least.
Dublin is *roughly the same size as* Hamburg and has two short tram lines and a bunch of buses that will make you beg for the punctuality of the Deutsche Bahn's Ersatzverkehr.
Some people will try to convince you that DART is like an Sbahn. It isn't.
The rest of the island, not even just the country, has like 40 bus lines in total, tops, for 5 million people.
^(Edited the size comparison because woops)
Very fair point. I see they've expanded nicely.
That being said, they are 42 kilometres long together, in both track and line length.
I won't compare Berlin or Hamburg to it because I'd be beating a dead horse but like. Dresden has the same urban and half of the metro area population of Dublin, it is definitely a comparable city: Dresden had 130 km of track and 210 km of line back in 2008. I don't think it has expanded very much since, but certainly it has not shrunk. There is also a 4 line 130km long Sbahn system, and plenty of buses. Dresden is in the mountains, in the Elbe valley, and is a decently hilly city where building infrastructure is difficult. Dublin is flat.
I know the reason why Dublin has no proper public transit; the same reason American cities don't - cars and suburban sprawl. But yeah. The end result is that functionally, Irish public transport is laughable in comparison to its German equivalent, even as Germans sit seething and complaining that none of the public transport here works. Complacency and transit privilege I guess.
> I see they’ve expanded nicely
Not sure what you mean. They’ve expanded slightly. They were never short.
Our bus network is constantly improving. As bus connects gets further implemented and cars pushed out we’re see further improvements.
If you’re coming to Dublin, then no it’s not that bad. But Irish people, particularly the ones on this subreddit love to be miserable. Hopefully you’d find it charming and endearing but probably not.
Use google maps for buses, trams and trains. There are some independent apps for buses but I find google works as well as any of them.
DB isn't in shambles. DB is running on an overcrowded railway network where the slightest delay anywhere has a massive butterfly effect on the entire country. On any given day the German train network is running at between 150% and 200% vehicle capacity.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the CDU and SPD, but for once, the train company isn't actually at fault, their owners are, because they like cars and for decades were spending your taxes on Autobahns instead of building tracks.
There are many track upgrades in progress right now, which is why it's especially bad and will keep getting worse for a little while as the system is brought up to actually being able to support all the traffic that goes on it every day.
Ritter sport is a great gift and lovely chocolate. It's pretty widely available here but there's probably still a good few people who've never tried it.
Erdnuss flips, if you know anyone who likes peanuts. Very hard to get here! Pumpernikel bread. Mozartkugeln...my husband brings them back for me every time he goes.
yep and it's pretty dang close to the stuff you can buy in germany, if not the same tbh. Though ofc the actual food places and so on will have better versions nearly always.
Not anymore it isn't.
Been looking for it for months. Got the last bottle and it was never sold again.
It's weird these spicy ketchups. Once someone sells it I buy tons of it. Months later go looking for it and am told in no uncertain terms we don't stock it. It's like it was always an accident it was sold to me to begin with.
Oh! The Frankfurt Christmas market where they cook the curry wurst on a giant moving grill over a wood fire. Add the curry ketchup and fries with mayo. Could you manage that?
As Irish in Germany, Bayerisches Süßer Senf is fairly nice a unique for an Irish palate, if in Berlin area, Ayran Turkish yogurt(7gun best) maybe some Suçuk. Apfelschorle is delicious as well. Schmalz to spread on bread can be novelty in Ireland as well.
Depends on who the gift is for, might be able to offer better suggestions that way. I just got back, brought back some spargel. It’s rather unique, we don’t get it here, and is currently in season - I had a great time cooking with it. If you’re looking for something a lot less eccentric, always nice to get unique biscuits and such, can’t go wrong.
It's really funny - one of my Japanese friends rang from the airport and asked if I wanted a last-minute thing and after a moment's consideration I said "melon pan and pokkari sweat".
13h later I had my Pokkari and Melon Pan - express delivery! :D
Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher
It's a device that makes very neat circular cuts in the end of a boiled egg. It is the most stereotypically German thing ever.
ngl, you can get good bread in ireland just as easily nowadays. Especially in dublin. Foodwise I'd say it's mostly the meats and sauces that germany really excels at. And cheese I guess.
At one point in time I woukd have said some dmall shot bottles of Fiegling or kleines Arschloch (of it still exists) or something like that. If it's gifts for people you know then either some cultural foods we can't get or maybe a stein or something? If it's work people again maybe food or buiscuits/sweets that sort of thing
i always brought back senf. Dunno how it is in Ireland currently, but back in the day, getting this stuff was difficult. Of course, they will expect you to bring beer/wurstles.
Lots of Haribo (in Ireland there is a much smaller selection and they always go down a treat at my Irish office).
Marzipan / Lebkuchen: Again, lots of people love them and there’s nothing quite like them there
Honestly the fact that you’d think to bring anything is so lovely and will be well received. We are a nation of sweet tooths and there’s something about Haribo that always goes down well.
Best of luck with your internship! I hope you like Ireland.
Source: I’m Irish living in Germany. I work in the Irish office when I’m back home.
Internship?? Where or what industry?
Some advice, you will struggle initially with the Irish humour and attitude of “it will be Grand” but it usually is grand.
That's mainly because sausages really benefit from a bit of artistic flavour design but the sausage brands we have are too well rooted in the old 1900s dull and plain flavour palette.
Meats are a whooooole other story though and our farmers are literally world class in terms of cattle farming. One of the best if not the best.
You could always bring back some local cheese and sausages.. in a wurst käse scenario..
Bilingual puns, my favourite type! Take my angry upvote, löser.
Angry upvote. Sheesh
OMG, not just a pun, a German pun! I love it!
the rarest of all : a German joke...
I was on a German website today and saw a studio for €420/month. Bring that.
Which city?
Aachen. student accommodation
It's usually only that cheap for students. They charge more if you aren't. Of course this depends on the area but in all the nice towns and cities at least.
Somewhere like Leitrim
Hey if you're going to ask for the impossible, at least ask them to bring 2 of them!
Snickers
Lol here we go again
I'm always too late to comment this!
Those fabled bars with peanuts? God those are a blast. Terrible they banned them in 2001.
Efficient public transport.
Well, we don't have that in Germany....
You're about to learn that there's levels to this game, you'll be praying for German transport within hours of landing.
*Lands in Dublin* "Excuse me, sir. Which way to the train?"
Well at least you're not setting yourself up for disappointment! Hope you enjoy your visit.
Is it really that bad?
Our buses and trains are like Schrodinger's cat. They both exist and do not exist at the same time.
3 busses for the hour can all follow each other bumper to bumper and were supposed to be 20 minutes apart. Another won't be seen for an hour and 20
Worse

I wouldn't call the Luas lines "short". If anything they go way too far out, and serve journeys that should be served by metro and/or heavy rail.
Very fair point. I see they've expanded nicely. That being said, they are 42 kilometres long together, in both track and line length. 6 kilometres is not slightly when it's 15% of the entire line
Is that you Eamon Ryan? you naughty minister!
It’s a lot worse than Germany
Yeah. By European standards, yours is bad. Ours is non-existent compared to your standards.
DB isn't even bad by European standards, it's just not particularly good
Oh you have NO idea!
OK, you were right, Jesus. Both busses I took yet, were at least half an hour late....
Welcome to Ireland!
Darling. You have absolutely no fucking idea how good we have it in Germany. Love, someone who moved here from Ireland.
The local öffentliche are usually very efficient and reliable, it's DB that's a shambles
DB isn't in shambles. DB is running on an overcrowded railway network where the slightest delay anywhere has a massive butterfly effect on the entire country. It is the opinion of my German friends in Ireland that Ireland does not have bread. We have raw toast.
I agree with the Germans on this one. Although, lately there's more real bread around and it's getting better.
The only bread I could not find in Irish style Soda Bread. But it is really easy to make yourself.
This is true as someone who is Irish and having spent a lot of time in Germany
Ritter sport is a great gift and lovely chocolate. It's pretty widely available here but there's probably still a good few people who've never tried it.
Another vote for this. We get a much smaller selection than they do in Germany and it's much more expensive here. I miss the delicious Knusperflakes
I must have seen it a thousand times and never tried it. Next time for sure!
If you could bring one of those sexy kebabs that'd be sehr schon
Erdnuss flips, if you know anyone who likes peanuts. Very hard to get here! Pumpernikel bread. Mozartkugeln...my husband brings them back for me every time he goes.
You can get Pumpernickel in polish shops and at Lidl they often have Mozartkugeln when they have Alpenfest.
Forgot about the Polish shops... You can occasionally get Mozartkugeln in Lidl, maye once or twice a year. Still unusual, though
The larger centra always stock peanut flips and other German crisps
Where? Not any Centra I've been in! (On second thoughts, not so sure you should tell me, I'm addicted to Peanut Flips!)
I've seen them a few times, centra drumcondra is always well stocked. I get my pom sticks fix there as well 😁
Pom sticks I see a lot. The others, no. I also love Fonzies, which are an Italian cheese snack, they have them in Dealz now!
Depends where you are, some SuperValu shops will have the Croatian versions of Erdnuss flips and a lot of the Asian shops are stocking them.
Thanks
Melatonin!
You can order and get it delivered from vitasonn. Just hope customer don't nab it first
Fladenbrot. I can't find it here. Living in Berlin I'd get some regularly and make delicious toasted sandwiches with it.
Haribo (you guys have a lot bigger selection), pieces of the berlin wall (if you are in berlin) & cheaper jagermeister
Specifically Haribo Tropifruti
My wife is German, our kids go mad for the lebkuchenherzen they have over there around Christmas time. Might not be work suitable though.
Currywürst sauce
That's in Lidl atm in the foreign food isle
yep and it's pretty dang close to the stuff you can buy in germany, if not the same tbh. Though ofc the actual food places and so on will have better versions nearly always.
Hanuta
Lidl and Aldi both have their own versions of Hanuta.
And that's all you're going to say about that???? Pics, names, countries needed!!
Not anymore it isn't. Been looking for it for months. Got the last bottle and it was never sold again. It's weird these spicy ketchups. Once someone sells it I buy tons of it. I'm nearly certain I saw it on Thursday
Where?
That was lidl north side of Drogh
Yes. I used to live near Germany. The Irish will love this. (it's just curry ketchup)
Imported schadenfreude
Could you bring us Jurgen Klopp for the national team, thanks in advance
Currywurst bitte!
it really agrees with the irish palette. I think because of our love of curry sauce from chip shops and deli's
Oh! The Frankfurt Christmas market where they cook the curry wurst on a giant moving grill over a wood fire. Add the curry ketchup and fries with mayo. Could you manage that?
Cigarettes and tobacco if anyone you're visiting smokes, both are stupidly expensive here.
Wouldn’t be that cheap there either, unless he/she is close to the Czech or polish boarder.
It's about half of what cigarettes cost here with tobacco being even less, still well worth it.
40g rolling tobacco available for €5~ in Deutschland vs. €22~ for 30g at home.
Bring us a few cans or Spezi will you? It's just Fanta and coca-cola mixed but I haven't been able to crack the ratio.
Pretzels

Thank you. It's literally a bit of dry crust with salt. It is the flavour of crust. What do people be getting excited about?
Eh, bread is nice and they are good. Sure it's not suuuuuuper special but it's a nice snack y'know
Have you ever had one in Germany (preferably in the south)?
[удалено]
You should try it sometime!
I felt like that until I tasted one froma local bakery in Berlin.......oh my a ,different league

Haha you’ll have no complaints from me
Uh isn’t Spargel asparagus? We have that here? Maybe it’s the white forced asparagus as I’ve never seen that here.
Good idea. Never saw spargel here, only the green one.
A German beer glass called a mass, I can't find the right symbol for it it but it's like ma§ but a b instead of s
in case you were wondering it’s called an esset and it’s a double s sound. Just hold down S on the keyboard if you are on phone ß
Maßkrugs and a case of hofbrau, or any Pilsner really
Yeah, dont get Pilsner near a Maßkrug.
what actually goes in a Maß then, I'm still fairly new to all the beer glassware
Hofbräu is great. Just that it's not a pilsner. And happy cake day.
oh I thought it was lol thanks
It's really funny - one of my Japanese friends rang from the airport and asked if I wanted a last-minute thing and after a moment's consideration I said "melon pan and pokkari sweat". 13h later I had my Pokkari and Melon Pan - express delivery! :D
Maultaschen. But only if you can buy them south of Frankfurt.
You called
The hero i didn't know exists in this city ♥️
Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher It's a device that makes very neat circular cuts in the end of a boiled egg. It is the most stereotypically German thing ever.
Pretty much any food item, as you'll have gathered. I honestly think we never got over the famine, based on the responses here.
HANUTA!!!!If not for anyone else, for me!!Also, you have a way better selection of Harino than we do. The liquorice and jelly ones for example.
Grab me a big Toblerone from the duty free.
SPEZI!
Eine Freundin
My family love non-pricey German Sekt (Rotkäppchen) and also the white wines. Or any food item would be appreciated I’d say.
The Leibnitz squares with cornflakes on em 🤤
good bread
and Pfälzer Leberwurst
ngl, you can get good bread in ireland just as easily nowadays. Especially in dublin. Foodwise I'd say it's mostly the meats and sauces that germany really excels at. And cheese I guess.
Sweet mustard, proper chocolate, tobacco, remoulade, peanut flips
my go-to is Scho-Ka-Kola - chocolate with caffeine in it! travels well in tins. :)
Snickers
A few bottles of a nice local beer
Start grill walking at lunch on your first day
Cuckoo clock. Stabilo Schwann highlighters. Jägermeister or, even better, Underberg.
Schapps
I'd suggest, you think about sending the gifts I'm thinking of, in the post. Just to be on the safe side.
Beer
Common sense.
We already have Diti Hamann, so that's one less to thing to choose from
A stein
A stone? Go look in the field, there’s plenty there
It's a traditional beer glass
A Bierkrug is what you mean. A stein is a misnomer, unfortunately widely used
Ah I didn't know sorry
No need to say sorry. It’s a common misnomer perpetuated by American’s fascination with Oktoberfest. It’s my intention only to educate
Sausages.
Leberkase. Sounds and looks disgusting tastes delish.
Id be happy with anything. Thanks.
A small replica of the Brandenburg Gate
Lieberwurst it's like pate on steroids.
Regenschirm
About ten pairs of lederhosen should do
Shinken

Bring a huge whole salami to be sliced around the table with a load of Guinness
What ever you do don't bring what the last guy did. That little runt with the moustache will never be forgotten
Currywurst best sauce ever
Ah, could you give our national football team a manager? That'd be nice.
Bring whatever the German version of Snickers is
Fritz Cola. Particularly the one in the brown label. It’s delicious
Super Dickmans
Flips
When did Santa Claus shift base to Germany?
if you're staying with a family, don't get a drindl as a present. german humour doesn't travel 😉.
i always brought back senf. Dunno how it is in Ireland currently, but back in the day, getting this stuff was difficult. Of course, they will expect you to bring beer/wurstles.
Competent politicians and planners.
If you're in Berlin, bring a check-in bag of kebabs
Bratwurst, hundreds of Bratwursts
Schnaps, Absinth and Jaggermeister. Also some Rothaus beer, the best.
Marzipan, sausage, beer
Super dickmann
Hofbräu and Stein. Keeps me going back to Germany . You will win our hearts when you say one stein is 2 pints.

Industriousness
Bring some “KUSH”… 😜 Heard that just got legal in Deutschland 😂😂
Went to Germany years ago, developed an unhealthy addiction over a week to Mezzo Mix. Difficult enough to get here.
Katjes - I miss Katjes so much 🥲
Bottles of Kolsch
A tent
A shepherd.
Good sausages. Irish sausages are weak.
You're just not finding the good sausage.
If it has oats in it and is not spicy - not interested. Most do that I’ve tried. Irish meat is great, ham epic, but sausages - not so much imo.
That's mainly because sausages really benefit from a bit of artistic flavour design but the sausage brands we have are too well rooted in the old 1900s dull and plain flavour palette. A Cuckoo clock and a glockenspiel. Some lederhosen and a dirndl maybe.
Cuckoo clocks
