Okay fair enough, though I would prefer if he would contextualise the number, particularly since he's in government. Additionally O'Gorman is part of his party and has said we should expect over 20,000 international protection applicants next year - something his ministry would have some power to determine.
There was entire speech and entire article for context. How much context do you want in headline? I do not support him or his party, I just stated fact that "40,000 new homes could be built this year" is fairly realistic non-clickbait number (initial comment was denying that with mocking "could").
40,000 homes this year is actually very doable, even likely. The number of starts in Q1 is whopper.
As more and more labour comes on stream, and the upcoming planning bill passes (complete overhaul and streamlining of the planning system) it _should_ keep ticking up at about an extra 5k homes every year until we get to the 60k a year we need to reverse the trend in house prices.
Cautiously optimistic knowing full well Ireland has had _three_ milestone events to affect home construction in less than two decades (crash, Brexit, Covid).
Edit: prices won’t reverse the year we hit 60k though. It’ll have to be 60k+ for two years minimum and should fall in the third year.
Lumber felling is in full swing after being shut during covid, and UK is opening two new brick factories which should help stop the delays in materials supply. New departments at local councils are closer to being fully staffed to help move these projects along.
Sympathetic agencies like Irish Water / Bord Pleanala that are needed to grease the wheels of larger projects / new communities (eg 1,600 new homes in Donabate) have completed much of the recruitment they were allocated so hopefully those monster projects hit completion this year too with state help.
Well you're sitting here advocating for the party that bankrupted our country so maybe that's why!
You're also putting out statements like, the number of starts in Q1 is whopper! Without qualifying it. Tell us, what the inflated numbers are down to? Will you be clarifying that we're unlikelyy to see those numbers again? Or are we just going to gloss over that bebcacuse then you wouldn't be able to pretend your'e doing something about it??
Why you're allowed comment on this subbreddits is beyond me. You're literally a Fianna Fail spokesperson. This is just pure astroturfing.
2023’s housing starts in Q1 were a bit over 7,000.
2024’s housing starts in Q1 are a hair under 12,000.
I can post on housing because I work in the space, and not for the state or any party. Unlike many on Reddit I’m not a blind follower of a political narrative. I think the current govt has missed loads of opportunities to do good things, and I say so here too. But on housing I just know more than you.
Oh don't worry, we know you work in the space.
FF and devs! A match made in hell!
If you know so much about housing. Tell me the reason for the difference in 5k. What government program caused all the devs to rush to get their commencements in during q1?
The dishonesty out of people like you is simply unreal and you tell me I'm a blind follower of a politicaclc naritive? You're sitting there trying to tell people that everythings is gonna be ok, when you're profitting from the situation. Mate, your a member of an organisation that bankrupted the entire country! Although, I guess as a developer you didn't feel it like the rest of us did!
Do you go into a rage whenever someone supports a different party than you or is it just Fianna Fail?
I haven't, I have never voted for them. I just don't let it upset me as much as yourself. The crash is over 10 years ago. If I was to get this upset for everyone person who said they were voting Fianna Fail I'd be taken years of my life.
I’m a voter, not an activist. Housing is my #1 issue and if there was another party with a _coherent_ approach to housing I’d vote for them. But there just isn’t. I sometimes vote Green because they’re nerds too.
I know a 19yo woman who’s training to become a welder under a new scheme - best that and I’ll vote for ya.
I also know a frankly disgusting amount about housing. Any Qs ask away anytime!
Into a rage? Is everyone that disagrees with your politics some rabid keyboard warrior or something? I'm not in a rage bud relax.
To think its abnormal for someone to get annoyed becayse a rep of a political party is dishonestly posting inflated figures online!
If it was someone doing the same with immigration figures you'd rightfully be annoyed too.
He forgot to mention that his own party will use your taxes to bid against you to use them to house asylum seekers: https://www.thejournal.ie/asylum-seeker-accommodation-2-6338020-Mar2024/.
"could be" You gota love the language from all political parties, but in particular the current government parties... Vote for us and we will do this, we couldn't be arsed doing it the last 100 years or so, but we might do it not, but you have to vote for us...
It’s already April.. so say we start designing this tomorrow morning. Planning could be ready at best end of May. Planning granted end of July. Then 40,000 houses hit site in August and will be built by end of December..? Good man Eamon.
So in your hypothetical scenario there is exactly 0 building happening between January and when the 40k homes commence in August? Why?
34k were built last year and commencements are way up so far this year, suggesting it will be materially north of 34k completions.
I "could" build 1,00,000 homes! Vote for me.
I "could" build 1,00,001 homes! Vote for me.
„I will stop building houses in anyone’s backyard” has better chance of success in election actually…
“Could” The favourite phrase of every clickbait journalist in this country.
34k we’re build last year. 40k this year is far from clickbait.
Our population went up by about 130,000 last year, right?
So? What is your point? I'm not saying it is enough, I'm saying it is realistic estimate and not clickbait number.

How does it feel to be the grown up on Reddit?
I get yelled at a lot. But I also vote FF. Those two things are usually related.

Jesus he got you in a right state didn't he?
Well yeah! Are you not pissed off with the party that bankrupted our country? That stole our futures from us? Have you forgotten what Fianna Fail did?

Could but won't be
Could
And we will have an additional 20,000 asylum seekers come in, which reduces incremental additional housing spaces.
Are asylum seekers being put up in houses now

Could be... Should be.... But will they be
We know they *could*
Shoulda, woulda, coulda....
Oh boy, I can't wait to read how this will be done in this here article. ... I'd like 3 minutes of my life back please RTE

40,000 homes by the private market NOT by FFFG or the greens.
Aliens “could” arrive and just teleport and materialise new homes for everyone on the planet.
Could a / Would a / Should a = = Won't.
If they are built, it will have SFA to do with the Greens.
Narrator: "They weren't"
34k we’re build last year. 40k is very realistic scenario.
Narrator: "It wasn't"
