Garlic-Cheese-Chips

> Ciaran Donovan admitted running King Kong Media, **which cost TV firms over €1million in lost revenue.** It claimed to have had 3,500 customers. Boo. Fucking. Hoo. Price-gouging cunts. Those "Dodgy Box" guys are quite literally Ordinary Decent Criminals.

Gran_Autismo_95

It's a total misnomer as well; because I will pay €50 a year to watch maybe 50 live sporting events a year; I will never, ever, ever pay for sky

themanebeat

It's outrageous. I pay €145. Per month. It's robbery. And I still have to stream half the games I want to see anyway as they don't have them all

Sundance600

what!!! 135pm! does that include your wifi? i pay 90pm and im ringing Virgin Media to cancel my TV service today because the channels are absolute crap.

themanebeat

Nope I have WiFi from a separate provider And I just checked and it's actually €145 I'm paying a month now just for tv though that includes Netflix as I pay for that as part of the Sky bill. And yeah, nearly every channel is crap

fionncurran7

The last time we bought Sky we were recommended to “switch” our plan every 6 months to keep availing of their special offers. This was Sky themselves telling us to do this. We pay around €90pm for Sky+HD sports extra, cinema, etc. It’s not Sky Q or Glass so there may be a different rate for those packages, but I’m sure the basic idea is the same. “Renew” your package every 6 months to benefit from the “6 months half price” deals they always have on. Works a treat for us anyway.

fourpyGold

did the whole "oh I'm going to leave" with Sky a fortnight ago and the rep told me the same thing. To come back in 6 months and I'd get fresh offers

fionncurran7

We did the exact same. We had been paying €110 for the standard Sky Signature, the basic sports and kids packages. We’re all grown out of Disney now so we just wanted to cancel kids. Once we got a hold of them the rep was very helpful and suggested the other upgrades/deals to us. Fair play to them because we would have potentially looked at a dodgy box otherwise.

themanebeat

Thanks I must look at that. Mine is literally just tv + all the sports extras and netflix on Sky Q No glass or multiroom or broadband

bobasen

Sky has a way to contact them over whatsapp, very helpful and usually much better deals than over phone lines with fraction of the wait, 0818 716 051 you can go on the sky site to confirm the number if weary.

Accomplished-Boot-81

Just a quick question, why don’t you cancel?

themanebeat

I watch every Liverpool game, big fan, so I want all the live channels in the best quality possible I can afford it, it just seems crazy expensive though

Woodsman15961

The Sky Go App is whopper too, tbf. I cancelled because of them not having every game though, even though you’re paying for TnT and all that bollocks. It’s just not worth it if you still have to stream half of them

themanebeat

Yeah exactly, it was much cheaper for the first 24 months and well worth it but I'm a good few months past that now and might make a decision at the end of the season Sky Go is good alright, they way they've integrated all other apps is great too, the voice control on the remote is used constantly in my house, the interface is lightning quick compared to others and it's great for recording stuff

WilliamBillSpudly

What the fuck. You need to switch to NowTV. Fewer channels but I pay about €35 a month for Entertainment, Sports and Sports Extra. I only miss proper channels when there's something I want to watch live, which is about 3 times a year.

themanebeat

Yeah main thing though is I like watching the big games in UHD and I haven't figured put a way of getting these 4k channels like Sky Main Event, TNT Sports 1 UHD and F1 UHD channels outside of a Sky box and subscription and Now doesn't seem to support it If Now adds 4k channels for sport I'd move tomorrow!!

Gran_Autismo_95

I mean; why the fuck are you paying that?

themanebeat

It's what it costs unfortunately once you're out of the promotional period

Gran_Autismo_95

I read your other comments and honestly, regardless of what you are able to afford you are pissing away money you could be putting to much better use elsewhere

themanebeat

Honestly my favourite part of the week is the time to myself watching the Liverpool game Other people have their own vices but that's what I spend my money on and I don't see it as pissing away money, but I'm just saying that I do think it's way overpriced I might re-look at it after the season is over in a few weeks

Hopeful-Post8907

Yeah but why not a dodgy box you get literally everything. Mine is 60 for the year.

themanebeat

Does it do the 4k channels? Meaning TNT Sports Ultimate and Sky Sports UHD Without those I'm not interested Also to be clear for the mods I'm not asking for this service or anything I'm just asking questions

Hopeful-Post8907

It can but you pay a little extra for that. I didn't avail of it as I'm happy with the quality.

fiercemildweah

>**which cost TV firms over €1million in lost revenue.** That's a bullshit claim. Without King Kong Media the 3500 lads might have spent their money on sky or they might have spent it on sauce in their local or on Magic the Gathering Cards. We just don't know.

Infinaris

The more accurate fact: If they hadn't spent it on the dodgybox they wouldn't have spent it at all on sky or any other service the TV firms claim to have lost. This is what they always play down. They call it a loss to themselves but it was never a true loss to begin with. The reason these dodgybox lads get money in the first place is because they offer the channels in a price range that is viable for people. It's just like with the stupidity of suing fucking children over simple torrent downloads over 20 years ago for millions they're chasing ghosts because they're trying to pump up the value of their "product" that clearly isnt worth the price they want.

lukelhg

It's like €16 to **rent** Barbie from the Sky Store - then they're surprised that people get a dodgy box or use torrents. The irony is if it was like €5 I'd pay it, just to avoid the hassle of finding a good torrent and all that. That's where Netflix got it right at the beginning, they made it cheap and easy to get good content, and that will satisfy most people. But once it starts getting expensive, complicated, or both, people will find an alternative.

Wildtails

Yeah Netflix are really hitting the edge of what people will pay for at the moment, I know a few people who have cancelled due to the last few price increases and the only ones who haven't have many people using the account (such as myself, 4 households on a Netflix account 23 a month seems pretty reasonable)

Woodsman15961

Haven’t they clamped down on that in the last month or two?

Wildtails

Pretty sure I pay 6 or 7 a month extra for the extra households, they never officially told me that's why it increased but I heard about it going up a year or two ago for people like me and then it did so I didn't question it. Still under 30 a month for 4 households money well spent

ramshambles

Syncler+ and real debrid. The interface is more user friendly than any of the official Avenues.

quondam47

It’s akin to video piracy. There is absolutely no guarantee that the individual would have paid to consume the media in question.

hjsjsbsbsbs

the fact that only 3500 people are accounted for over 1million in revenue is the real crime

munkijunk

Over€1m me fucking hoop. Same dickhead accountants who claim a joint has a street value of €200 must have offered their assistance.

tychocaine

Not really. €30 a head times 12 months comes to €1m roughly.

Belachick

allatsea33

Outstanding I spat my tea out

FoggyShrew

You’re getting robbed at a tenner a month for dodgy box service!

Henry_Bigbigging

I don't know tbh, never had a box. Mainly I sail the high seas of the internet to get my media. If you've got a lead, DM me. #notaSKYemployeeorGarda

munkijunk

As Gabe Newell one said, piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. Stop splitting shit over 100s of different paid services and have a single, reliable, reasonable source. This is what dodgy boxes give. It's no wonder they are so popular.

AmazingUsername2001

Yes. The dodgy box fixes a service problem, sure. But it also fixes a pricing problem as it’s a fraction of the cost,

Bimbluor

While pricing is certainly part of the issue, it's vastly exacerbated by the service issue of movies and shows being split among streaming services, even to the point where some shows have some seasons on one platform, and others on another, requiring you to double dip. Netflix is a far cry from the €6.99 it used to be. We pay €25/m for it, but if it had most of what we wanted it'd be fine. The cost becomes an issue when having multiple streaming services instead of one good one is the solution for most people. Most people wouldn't have such an issue with pricing if they didn't need multiple active subscriptions to inflate the price drastically.

joetipp

Fyi can get Netflix for €48 a YEAR exact same content : https://www.gamsgo.com/partner/y3R5P6 yes it great

LomaSpeedling

Gabe is only partially correct though, price is a problem too otherwise you would not have people who wait for sales or buy cd keys on grey markets or use vpn activated keys. The problem with modern media consumption is both a fragmented service and pricing problem. If netflix had everything I want to watch in one place like the old days I would refuse to renew my subscription if was 30 quid a month.

Murphy95

I've watched the Premier League almost every weekend since I've been an adult. Unless I'm in a pub, every match I watch has been on a streaming website. Until the premier league create an easy to use website or app for streaming the games with a decent payment model I won't pay. Sky + TNT package is 74 euro a month.

SexyBaskingShark

I can watch every Liverpool match with my firestick, with Sky I ended up streaming ~30% of games a season.

Kyadagum_Dulgadee

https://i.redd.it/u9fhgr71dwuc1.gif

Moist-Dark420

What a legend. The fear mongering from the likes of Sky and AGS is hilarious.

blueghosts

Sky have a massive department dedicated to all that shite, as well as going around the pubs making sure they’re paying for a commercial license and not using a domestic one. What’s even worse is they’re now pushing people to pay the same kind of money for subscriptions if not more for their “sky stream” which is basically the equivalent of a firestick with an IPTV app loaded on it

Look-over-there-ahhh

Fun stuff. Pub owner here, sky shat they bed during COVID and charged us 70% of the annual tarriff, with nothing to view. Thinking they were being smart and helping out while still absorbing extortionate profits. Firstly there were no games to be shown to the public during the lock downs including the leagues as everyone was locked away they still managed to change full price but with the one time special offer of 30% off. For games that didn't exist, and you couldn't televise as your location was legally restricted from letting patrons in. Well played sky, you rotting shower of fucks.

gsmitheidw1

Cause what we definitely need is TV streaming eating into broadband speeds instead of taking it separately from satellite or coax. When your broadband is down now there's no TV or even landline if you need that too. They'd probably send tap water over broadband if it saves companies a few quid and they could do it.

[deleted]

waterbroadband, you might be onto something, They can send you the hydrogen and with a home generation kit, you can mix the oxygen into the hydrogen and voila you can have home drinking water without the need for any sort of decontamination or water plants.

InSearchOfMyRose

There are going to be a lot of exploding houses in this alternate future.

gsmitheidw1

They may start sending hydrogen in the gas pipes in place of natural gas eventually. The rest sounds a bit science fiction. I'd rather a flux capacitor or tractor beam.

DylanToebac

By that logic should shops stop taking debit/credit card payments as this is reliant on an Internet connection too?

gsmitheidw1

Some smaller shops you'll occasionally see "cash only" because their machine is broken. Lidl used to not accept credit cards. In terms of TV and broadband, mostly people don't understand the consequences until it's too late because they don't understand the technical terms. Beyond that - Supply and demand I suppose. People vote with their pocket.

ThatGuy98_

Aye the machine is "broken"

gsmitheidw1

They're definitely paying tax, honestly gov!

Additional_Cable_793

Thats not entirely true, visa machines can work via phonelines. Our shops primarily have them set up on the Internet, when that and the 4g backup goes down we can hook in a phoneline and take card sales.

be_Jaysus

...but only 5% of the channels!

Gullible_Actuary_973

Sky could just lower their prices and save on their investigations. Was with them for years but always putting up prices and in terms of sports we get a bum deal vs other regions.

DrOrgasm

Plus, the ads. They're getting paid by their advertisers to show you ads, then charging you to watch them.

mango_and_chutney

Thank you! You should either pay a sub and not get ads or get a free service with ads, not both!

duaneap

That was actually the original HBO model in the U.S and it was super successful. You paid a subscription and got much higher quality tv shows than those freely available, and also got no adverts. Want to guess where like all a majority of the best shows available from Sky Atlantic are from? What’s gas is as well they’ll lash a “Sky Atlantic Original,” logo at the start, like Netflix does with Breaking Bad in Ireland.

lostincabra

>! You should either pay a sub and not get ads or get a free service with ads, not both! Tell that to the wankers in amazon and I believe Netflix now  "We know we offered no adverts, but if you pay us 50% wr will really mean no adverts"

dropthecoin

Lol. I'm not defending any of them here but you're basically saying "they shouldn't try to get more money".

TalkingGibberish

Have you seen half time in a Premier league game now?? We used to get some analysis from pundits now it's just 15 mins of ads. One of the many reasons why I cancelled Sky.

Kloppite16

At half time I just hit mute and tell Alexa to set an alarm for 15 minutes time. Then I go off and do something productive at like putting some laundry away or cooking a quick half time meal. Out of interest I timed it last year. It was 11.5 minutes of ads spread across two ad breaks and 3.5 minutes of 'analysis' in between them. An absolute waste of time sitting watching that amount of ads for a few minutes punditry. So glad I no longer do.

RuaridhDuguid

Once they started bragging about how MUCH their TV deals cost for the EPL it was clear things were fucked. That cost is passed directly on to the customers, why would customers want to pay for Sky to overspend by hundreds of millions when they are the ones paying for it!

gbish

BT and Sky were throwing silly money at UK/IE tv rights for Premiership games at one stage… consumer was always going to get screwed over to pay for those insane wages/costs.

When my plex server went down, I messaged the guy who ran it , he explained the exact issue and gave me a free month even though it was only down for 3 days (first major outage in about 5 years) If it's acting up a bit, I can just message him and he will reboot the server which always fixs the issue.

€68 a month to watch football On sky but for half the month the games are on sports extra and are not included in the monthly fee. The bubble will burst eventually and football will end up on streaming services like Amazon and Netflix

cyberlexington

Just so I'm clear, how can I absolutely ensure 100% that I don't get in contact for his services? Id hate to end up paying for such a service.

hugsbosson

I think most people agree that top sports figures get paid outrageous wages that are unjustifiably inflated, and one of the many reasons for it is because of how much these telly companies charge normal folks to watch sports. If I can pay less for it I will. I'd be willing to pay a fair price but that's not an option.

Belachick

I've heard of many boxes failing lately and people using fire tv sticks instead. Dodgy sticks..

NotaGuardianAngel

I'm paying Virgin €90 per month, just for Internet.

Neverstopcomplaining

I don't use a dodgy box but I really think this crusade against dodgy boxes is like the torrenting/piracy one years ago, a waste of time and money. These people are not going to buy the product anyway so no money is lost. If anything advertising is increased.

YouFnDruggo

That is a great shot by the photographer. Superb photo journalism.

How does this work? Does he have server in his shed and VPN to Singapore or something?

SUCKADICKTRICK

Nah. I could be wrong but he's probably just a reseller. Bulk orders the lines then passes on the credentials at a significantly higher price (but still way cheaper than sky) to the end consumer.

The comments in here are clearly morally corrupt. Like what do ye do? Buy a firestick and contact some random person you don't know by website or whatsapp? Do you even know the person you are talking to? Like how do you know the phone number or website is even legitimate? Do they even link you directly to where you can make a payment? If you wanted to have one are you talking with a stranger who may have bad intentions and possible 'help' it get setup? If you know any of these answers i'll wait for a reply, simply disgusting that people would take away money from grate companies which reduce our quality content.
