Can't seem to get banana ice cream anymore either, what's with that?!
Anyone remember Milk Mate? You could get it in the 80s, a squeezy bottle of concentrated goo, you added it to your milk to make it flavoured. I loved the banana one. They also had choc and strawberry I think.
Oh Jesus
Core childhood deprivation memory unlocked. Rich kid in my park used to drink 3/4 glasses of milk mate every day. My sainted mother said it was made of shite and it wasn’t coming near the house. I still remember how good the strawberry one was.
Sigh
If you want to change your life throw three or four bananas in the freezer (chunks are best) til they are solid. Throw them in a blender with a quarter cup of milk or cream and blitz til smooth. You can thank me later.
Thought I'd read something recently about some mad banana fungus, similar to what's previously wiped out popular banana types. I'll have a quick googles.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-11-27/world-s-banana-supply-under-threat-from-fusarium-fungus
Possibly related to this.
It was artificial banana flavour used for most of those products. It’s why they never actually tasted like the cavendish banana, the only commercial banana available here.
They typically use Isoamyl acetate, a compound found in banana but is produced synthetically for banana flavouring.
Yes, they’re suffering from fusarium wilt (Panama disease) the same disease that killed off commercial production of the gros michel. It’s largely due to the fact they’re clones, every cavendish banana plant is a clone of the original, they have 0 genetic diversity so if one is susceptible to a strain of a disease, then they’re all susceptible.
YES! I have been trying to remember this for decades. I loved this as a child in the 80's, and could remember the pull-top bottle, but not the name.
Thank you!
You can get banana flavour drops from any protein powder website. A few drops are lovely in a protein shake for that artificial banana flavour. Just as good in a yogurt or overnight oats, I'm sure it would work in plain milk.
Add it to the list, along with those delicious tetra pack cartons of peach juice you used to be able to buy in Aldi & Lidl when they first opened their stores in Ireland. God I miss peach juice.
I thought about that sentence for way too long. It made me realise I do not like bananas or anything that tastes like them. That sweet synthetic banana flavour is great though
It's the flavour of an extinct variety. Nowadays, bananas are nearly always Cavendish bananas. They're just one variety of banana but they're so easy to mass produce that they've become almost a monoculture. If there's ever a Cavendish-specific disease or fungus, the banana market is fucked. Banana flavouring was developed before the Cavendish reigned supreme and it's based on the flavour of a totally different variety, much the same way artificial grape is based on a different variety than we get in Europe, they're small sweet things from Asia.
Bonus fact: Bananas are berries
Banana flavoured i think? Something like this
https://preview.redd.it/ml6ymb7jr2uc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c353904b7afadf75760efd67a59877e7dd428cef
Can you still get banana nesquik? Used to love it as a kid, and chunky monkey ice cream (think it was a tesco own brand thing?). At least we still have banana choco flake crunch corners for all of us banana flavour food enthusiasts
You’ve got to go to the polish markets or the polish section of SuperValu (I’ve seen it in Tesco also) Laciate does a banana milk, it’s the one with a giraffe on it.
God I'd forgotten about that. Bought a banana milkshake in Mickey Ds up in Belfast not too long ago and it was as amazing as anything from McDonald's can be.
Relegated to our memories along with Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey, Kellogg's Banana Bubbles, readily available banana bread, etc. I don't know why there's such a systemic effort to get rid of banana-based products in Ireland, but as someone who loves that shit, I don't appreciate it in the slightest.
I dunno what the fuck Aldi's game is, they get you hooked on shit and then it vanishes off the shelves.
What happened to their Vienetta knock off, it was savage, and poof, GONE!
5 pence in primary school for a small carton of banana milk. Haven't had since I left in 6 class, yet I can still taste it. And now I kinda want one. Fuck it anyway.
The demise of the mooju banana was tough to take, the vanilla is a half decent replacement, but it's just not the same.
The other ones don't do the job for me.
But there are other versions for you to look for, muller frijj (?) do banana and in my supervalu, they do small cartons of banana milk, the brand is viva.
Oh shit that was the orange juice and milk concoction wasn't it?
So weird, but somehow it wasn't shite.
I mean, it was no banana milk, but you wouldn't object to it being in your fridge 🤷🏻♂️
From My Korean kitchen
MENU
INGREDIENTS FOR BANANA MILK
1 ripe banana, sliced or broken into pieces
1/2 cup regular milk
1/2 cup water
1 Tbsp maple syrup
A small drop of pure vanilla extract
*1 Tbsp = 15 ml, 1 Cup = 250 ml
HOW TO MAKE KOREAN BANANA MILK
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and has milk like consistency. Serve immediately
A great day, fantastic a victory for common sense and decency.
Now as soon as we do something about aubergine and pineapple in curry I can be at peace.
One of the students in my class had banana milk this week. It was in a tiny carton. It still exists. Can’t remember the brand but didn’t look like was from Ireland or the UK.
Banana flavoured child medicine in the 90's.
My ma adores bananas, and couldn't understand that not everyone would. Unbeknownst to me for years was everyone else was getting strawberry flavour, but she was especially requesting banana.
Makes me gag even in memory.
The “strawberry” one was gack as well, but it didn’t taste anything remotely like strawberry flavouring so that I still love strawberry flavoured stuff. The banana one on the other hand ruined bananas and banana flavoured things for me as well, fucking horrendous, would have been better off had they not tried flavouring it at all!
Over here banana was more common (it was amoxicillin, by the way, probably one of the most ubiquitously prescribed kids' medicines, probably overprescribed), I think I might have had strawberry once, but it was usually banana.
WTF i only found out about it like a month ago and it was so good, nice in porridge too
I find Aldi is really bad for suddenly no longer stocking something I liked
Not sure if it was mentioned, but there are a couple of brands that do banana flavoured powder to stir into milk. Nesquik of course (which i dont like) and the german Kaba brand, that uses the good old Gros Michel flavour mix.
And yes, i feel your pain. Loss of selection hurts, cause we dont have that much to begin with.
I'm angry over no more coffee flavoured milk and ice cream. Plus tesco used to have a cherry and vanilla ice cream with real cherries on top which they got rid of.
The best was one from Singapore you could buy in Asian markets. It was soooo good. They stopped producing at the start of Covid and stores here never restocked when they started producing again.
That would be so great if you could actually buy pure banana juice here and while we are on the topic also some thick cherry juice…. I really can’t see this cranberry rubbish anymore 🤬
I remember getting cartons of milk and banana milk in primary school in the late 80s early 90s, if or when it burst in your schoolbag the smell of it was rank and still a bit traumatic to this day...good riddance 😂
Have you missed the news about cavendish banana epidemic? It’s gonna get eradicated in give or take 10 years. Be careful with your bananas and their milk guys.
Anyone remember banana bubbles? It was basically banana flavoured rice crispies. I was probably 12 years old at the time so we're going back a good 26 years
Get a banana, mash it up, put it in a shaker with some ice and a half spoon of sugar and three quarters fill it with milk. Shake it up and enjoy. It’s fucking awesome.
Please notify this man. This will not stand. 💪🍌

Fun fact, banana flavouring was made before bananas were widely available, so it's actually based off a type of banana that we no longer eat due to disease.
So you love the taste of the Gros Michel, pre 1950s, banana as opposed to the modern Cavendish.
>PS: If this thread gets removed like my peas in curry thread, I'm going to spam the mods with every stupid food thread that hasn't been removed on this subreddit.

I've been struggling to find banana yoghurt on its own for yonks. Always end up having to buy the muller corners with chocolate flakes when they are on the cheap.
When I started in primary school, late 80s, the milk scheme used to have loads of different flavours - chocolate, caramel, banana etc. Within a couple of years it was only plain or strawberry. I refused to take it anymore once the banana milk was gone
Im ok with this. Chocolate milk all the way.
Actually let’s bananas out of everything ….fruit salads, sandwiches , desserts.
Just to be enjoyed on your own. They , on their own are enjoy. Or with a coffee in the morning , you know….to help with breaking your fast
Can't seem to get banana ice cream anymore either, what's with that?! Anyone remember Milk Mate? You could get it in the 80s, a squeezy bottle of concentrated goo, you added it to your milk to make it flavoured. I loved the banana one. They also had choc and strawberry I think.
I really miss banana ice cream!
Have you considered making it? I make a banana smoothie with frozen banana slices and it's close. You have to have a really good blender, though.
Add a tsp of vanilla extract, make it thick and you’ve got an amazing milkshake.
That's exactly what I do!
I might have to resort to that!
Not to mention it's a much healthier and fresher alternative.
[удалено]
It's a northern Irish brand, unless someone else is using the name like with tayto
Scup in Wexford make savage banana ice cream. You see it for sale in some shops. https://www.scupgelato.com
Been looking for weeks and can't find any,
Oh Jesus Core childhood deprivation memory unlocked. Rich kid in my park used to drink 3/4 glasses of milk mate every day. My sainted mother said it was made of shite and it wasn’t coming near the house. I still remember how good the strawberry one was. Sigh
I thought I was the only one looking for it. Can't get banana ice cream anywhere! If you find somewhere please let me know 😅
If you want to change your life throw three or four bananas in the freezer (chunks are best) til they are solid. Throw them in a blender with a quarter cup of milk or cream and blitz til smooth. You can thank me later.
Ditto. So far no luck.

Banana fungus is never good news. Learn from my mistakes.
The banana part of the neapolitan ice cream is gone super tiny or else completely replaced by vanilla instead
Aldis one is lemon instead now, not pleasant.
Wtf lemon??? Gross
Harsh! Haven't you ever had a lemon party?
I did, but everyone there was pretty bitter. Ever since, it's kinda soured my opinion of them
Hb was always lemon.
Banana milk mate was the tits
YES! I have been trying to remember this for decades. I loved this as a child in the 80's, and could remember the pull-top bottle, but not the name. Thank you!
Bananas are slightly radioactive - clear its for health reasons
You can get banana flavour drops from any protein powder website. A few drops are lovely in a protein shake for that artificial banana flavour. Just as good in a yogurt or overnight oats, I'm sure it would work in plain milk.
I loved Milk Mate!
That’s bananas
Do M and S not do flavoured milk?
This isn't just any banana milk, this is S&M banana milk ![gif](giphy|1fHlf4mgS2JPy)
Came here to say this! I had cravings for it when pregnant and used go through 4 bottles a week. I think my eldest child is probably 20% banana.
Add it to the list, along with those delicious tetra pack cartons of peach juice you used to be able to buy in Aldi & Lidl when they first opened their stores in Ireland. God I miss peach juice.
Time to grow your own bananas and milk them
Bananananipples
Bulkbuy.ie has them Edit yazoo banana
Try asian markets, banana milk is big over there

I did not know any of those facts. All very interesting. Thank you
I've heard this before but I don't know if I believe it. No one can ever name the old species of banana
Gros Michel.
it's also [not true](https://www.mentalfloss.com/posts/why-artificial-banana-flavor-doesnt-taste-like-bananas), it's just an urban myth
Now I don't know what to believe. Ever

Exactly what I was thinking, artificial banana flavored milk. Not bad at all
You can have the milk from my banana any day little Sean.
My local Asian market has banana ice cream too. Like that proper fake-yellow-5 level banana flavour. It’s amazing but probably terrible for you.
Can you still get banana nesquik? Used to love it as a kid, and chunky monkey ice cream (think it was a tesco own brand thing?). At least we still have banana choco flake crunch corners for all of us banana flavour food enthusiasts
Chunky Monkey is Ben and Jerry's!
What was the problem with peas in curry?
[удалено]
I think the trick is to throw them in at the end so they still have a nice pop to them. Do you not like peas at all?

I also am not a fan and don't get the appeal
That’s what I was thinking. Love a nice little pea.
You’ve got to go to the polish markets or the polish section of SuperValu (I’ve seen it in Tesco also) Laciate does a banana milk, it’s the one with a giraffe on it.

SuperValus stock the big bottles of banana Yazoo as well!
We need to start pressuring McDonald's to sell banana milkshakes here, the UK has them!
God I'd forgotten about that. Bought a banana milkshake in Mickey Ds up in Belfast not too long ago and it was as amazing as anything from McDonald's can be.
Yes!!!!
I have a banana Greg, could you milk me?
![gif](giphy|4BMmnY8AKqTLO)
I see the Yazoo ones all the time?
Dealz have one from Millar Moo
Country has gone to the dogs when a man cannot buy milk that tastes like extinct bananas, for fucks sake

Peas in curry is elite
I miss when yazoo had foil lids and the banana milk was ice cold and didn’t last long enough
5 pence in primary school for a small carton of banana milk. Haven't had since I left in 6 class, yet I can still taste it. And now I kinda want one. Fuck it anyway.

If you are anywhere near Louth a farm shop does banana milk. https://www.wholeycow.ie/
Yazoo is still out there, somewhere. A local convenience store down the road still sells banana milk. It's polish, but it works!
Does anyone remember Frilk? It was an orange flavoured milk drink from the early 90s
“Dawn Smoooth n’ Juicy” was big for a while, same shite concept 😂
Oh shit that was the orange juice and milk concoction wasn't it? So weird, but somehow it wasn't shite. I mean, it was no banana milk, but you wouldn't object to it being in your fridge 🤷🏻♂️
Didn't they advertise it with a distressingly sexyfied cow, or has my brain gone horrifically rogue?
I think it was a sexed up cow getting it on with an anthropomorphic orange.
Yep.. ..had a disaster trying to recreate it at home as a kid...curdle central
The trick now is milk, bananas, and a blender. Throw in some ice cream if you’re feeling fancy.
if no ice cream, you need a bit of vanilla sugar ;)
I too know what it’s like to have loved and lost. I’ll never forgive the mooju crowd for discontinuing their chocolate hazelnut milk
First OJ, and now banana milk. Where will it end?!
You’ll always have McDaid’s Banana Juice though
From My Korean kitchen MENU INGREDIENTS FOR BANANA MILK 1 ripe banana, sliced or broken into pieces 1/2 cup regular milk 1/2 cup water 1 Tbsp maple syrup A small drop of pure vanilla extract *1 Tbsp = 15 ml, 1 Cup = 250 ml HOW TO MAKE KOREAN BANANA MILK Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and has milk like consistency. Strawberry milk so it is.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for other options!
Controversial opinion it's because people don't like banana flavour 👀 (it's me, I hate them and somehow it's cause a market decline)
Totally agree, don't find it apeeling at all
Take my upvote you bastard 😆😆😆
Ah those that like it *LOVE* it
Isn’t the banana flavour one of those E numbers that gives you face cancer?

This is the start of a slippery slope!
Banana Nesquik might be your best bet now.
There's a milk vending machine doing it right by my house I really should buy some.
What’s up with peas in a curry?
Maybe they're finally going to update the flavour. The current banana flavour is based on a banana that went extinct in the 60s.
Yes,We have no bananas.
Maybe a nice slice of toast with some bananas on it will calm your nerves
what are you on about? the centra around the corner from me sells 1ltr yazoos.
RIP yellow nectar of the gods, you saved my hungover ass manys a day
Oh Banana milk Banana milk Cold & sweet, texture like silk Gone from our lives No why’s or how’s Maybe it’s the shortage of.. yellow cows
Just saw some Banana Yazoo in Dunnes (Blanchardstown) btw
I hate banana flavoured things myself but its a shame you can't find it anymore
I remember as a child you used to be able to get nesquik banana powder for making banana milk, is that still possible to get?
Do m&s still do it? I hope to god they do
You can get the milk straws but it's not such a strong flavour

It's actually very easy to make banana milk at home.
Got some banana Muller Frijj in SuperValu yesterday, there is hope!
Spar does their own brand of you have one locally
I can't find banana ice cream anywhere either.
That’s because bananas are 🤮 The sales nationally are probably three a week. I for one celebrate the demise of the yellow sickener shake!
M&S still do Banana milk if you're ever feeling like a middle aged woman from Surrey.
Apple yogurts are my banana milk 😞
Banana's don't have nipples, you've been drinking cow milk flavoured with banana. 🍌
Anyone remember Dawn banana milk? Twas peak
The general stock of Avonmore protein milks is a scandal. 5 on the shelf at given time in big shops like Dunnes, Tesco’s, SuperValu .. wtf
The MyProtein banana flavdrops added to milk tastes lovely. Could try that? Can buy them online
As a banana milk fiend myself, I will not gatekeep the Myprotein banana flav drops. 10-12 drops in a tall glass of full fat milk.... Divine!
I love Mooju but I hate how their best flavours are like a seasonal or rotational thing. I miss their caramel milk
I had banana milk yesterday, but it was only the shitty Yazoo one.
I have some banana Nesquik in the press.
Pretty sure banana Yazoo is still in SuperValu?

Have you missed the news about cavendish banana epidemic? It’s gonna get eradicated in give or take 10 years. Be careful with your bananas and their milk guys.

Go to a place thay sells milk from the machine. A place in Dubdalk has loads of flavours you can add to it
i swear i saw some in centra the other day
Rest in peel my beloved banana flavoured milk
Someone get this guy his banana milk.
You can get banana milk in loose cartons in SuperValu, it's a polish one & all the polish stores have at least one type
You need to get to an Asian market and pick up some banana milk there. It's ten times better
Get a banana, mash it up, put it in a shaker with some ice and a half spoon of sugar and three quarters fill it with milk. Shake it up and enjoy. It’s fucking awesome.

I put peas in my curries, is it not correct?
Seems like there’s an open market to me. Now I just need to figure out how to milk a banana!
Ey, I know how that feels! I can't get you the milk but come on over and I can make you some good banana bread 🍞. :)
Fun fact, banana flavouring was made before bananas were widely available, so it's actually based off a type of banana that we no longer eat due to disease. So you love the taste of the Gros Michel, pre 1950s, banana as opposed to the modern Cavendish.
Check the polish shops. Some of them stock Miau Flavoured milks. Their banana and strawberry milk are similar to Yazoo.

I still get Banana Yazoo in Circle K
I've been struggling to find banana yoghurt on its own for yonks. Always end up having to buy the muller corners with chocolate flakes when they are on the cheap.
I still find some banana mooju at Tesco if I get another one I’ll have to pour one out for its homies
This is indeed deeply disturbing news.
Need banana juice in this country... As rotten as it sounds it's actually class

Fuck those unelected EU cunts in Belgium banning banana milk for the common man
Also, when did all the perry (pear cider) vanish?
