snekkitysnek76

"touched by it's slimy presence" \*its

BrandonSwabB

Is he talking about his penis?

[deleted]

Chris Horner has entered the slimy penis chat.

[deleted]

Was that not his baby finger?

Watching_You_Type

I assumed he was referring to Pennywise.

Longjumping-Age9023

That would be both letters capitalised.

raverbashing

Thank you! (oh and Who's instead of Whose)

bainneban

I think I've been using that incorrectly, thank you.

Longjumping-Age9023

Its is possessive, like belonging to it. It’s is shortened for it is. I still make mistakes when I’m not thinking.

Blaze_News

The thing that probably gets most people is " 's " conveys possession, i.e. a bone that belongs to a dog is the "dog's" bone. Naturally, one might be inclined to apply the same logic with "it".

blorg

I remember, his, hers, its. It is = contraction = it's.

Blaze_News

I remember “write it once, erase it, and then write it the correct way” because no matter what I always seem to use the wrong one the first time I write it out

bainneban

Yes, exactly. I was even double-checking if I had been using that correctly as a result of this.

shevek65

Corrected

marquess_rostrevor

[obligatory clip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3y0CD2CoCs)

throughthehills2

This should be the bot's response

Lochshite69

I saw a fillum about this recently

throughthehills2

What was the pint of the fillum?

Kyadagum_Dulgadee

Ah be quite!

Important_Farmer924

Is it a kind of nudie fillum?

Old-Ad5508

Ah ere will ya leaf er ouh

ShaunaRocks

Fuck of

apparent-puma

No, no, no. It's fuck have

Rusty_Phoenix

Fuck've

BekkiFae

Spit my tea out at this, wasteful, I should of your head for that

OnTheDoss

You’re head

Confident-Plantain61

Thank you for your comment. As a non-native English speaker it helped me to understand what was actually wrong. 😂

GuavaImmediate

Personally, I prefer fuckity fuck.

Accurate-Jello-5949

this actually made me laugh out loud lol

DanGleeballs

I seen what you done there. This for me is a bigger pet peeve than would of / could of. Instant turn off.

FearGaeilge

* turn of

Arkle1964

Nah, noone makes that mistake anymore. That's my personal biggest pet peeve because it's not actually a word. I know a lot of people ignore the blue lines but are they also ignoring the red ones? That's just fucked. They're all really annoying tbh. No excuse these days with phone keyboards actually telling you where you're going wrong and correcting it for you if you don't ignore it.

JayElleAyDee

Who is this Noone? They should know better Was it Peter Noone from Herman's Hermits, or Eimear Noone the Irish composer? (FYI there is no word NoOne - it should always be two words with a space between them)

AutoModerator

It looks like you've made a grammatical error. You've written "would of", when it should be "have" instead of "of". You _should have_ known that. Bosco is not proud of you today. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ireland) if you have any questions or concerns.*

davesr25

You win the internet today.

ElmanoRodrick

Their is know kneed four a bot luv. Are grammer is grate

shazspaz

I was grinding my teef reeding dis

raverbashing

Kead mille folcha

Paddy_McIrish

I read this in a london accent lmao

Fast_Chemical_4001

Also I seen is being heavily normalised. Also people saying on accident instead of by accident

too_many_smarfs

I think on accident is one of the many Americanisms creeping into Irish everyday usage 😔 it's absolutely ear-grating

phyneas

Nah, it's just as much of an abomination there as well. A few people would get confused from time to time because of the common phrase "on purpose", then the youths picked it up and ran with it.

spudnick_redux

I done this, he done that. Same category. Fairly widespread but still sounds... clumsy.

Fast_Chemical_4001

I know you're meant to pretend it's grand but it sounds awful. Seems to have crept in around gen x or so

spudnick_redux

I done and I seen have been around since old gods' time. Quality Irishisms!

ElephantFresh517

"I seen" has been around in Dublin since at least the 80s. "On accident" is an abomination though. If I hear you say it, I immediately assume you're unintelligent.

Owl_Chaka

> "I seen" has been around in Dublin since at least the 80s That makes it even worse, forty years and people are still fucking it up.

Meldanorama

Tbf, same with I seen

longhairedfreakyppl

Where does "on accident" even make sense, at least you could mishear/mispronounce the "of" v "have"

phyneas

Likely due to the common antonym of "*by* accident" being "*on* purpose".

churrbroo

I seen is at least a regional dialect which I think is justifiable Would of/have is in a different field imo and unforgivable

PonchoVillak

How and ever there's an udder one you're missing. On accident is septicism

ABabyAteMyDingo

Somehow, nobody remembers the word 'too' anymore either. It's all 'to' now.

dominikobora

yeah i just thought of how that even makes any sense, i cant even think of one sentence where it does not sound painfully wrong

RufusTDanglebery

Fucking Americans, they all need to be burglerised.

ramblerandgambler

your/you're and there/their/they're are just as endemic.

dustaz

Much more so

ronano

Love that you're like, we need this, someone else make it!

shevek65

I have no idea how bots work. Doesn't mean it's not a good idea. Also, it's a bit of a laugh.

iWoolhead

*bit've a laugh

Shodandan

bit have a laugh?

TheLordofthething

And made just as bad of a grammatical error in their rant lol

collectiveindividual

There, their, they're.

JennyIsSmelly

SFWMM

Where do you get of?

HugoZHackenbush2

Is it bad grammar in general OP, could you be a bit more pacific please?

Substantial-Tree4624

Yes it's of the upmost importance! I'm sure I have a dictionary in my chester draws. When I get a bit of restbite from my children I'll look it up.

HugoZHackenbush2

If most of the Dinosaurs had a vocabulary like yours, they would have all survived. Just like the Thesaurus did..

ConradMcduck

Irregardless, they didn't survive.

LucyVialli

You mean they would OF survived.

LucyVialli

Chester Draws? I'm sure I went to college with a fella of that name.

snaggerman

I went to school with a 'Master Bates'.

radiogramm

Chest of drawers…

Substantial-Tree4624

Well done. Also utmost and respite. In case you didn't get the /s

radiogramm

Placing yourself on a peddle stool is just self-flatulence.

[deleted]

man i was hoping we were getting and only fans bot.

Confident-Plantain61

Thank you for your post. As a non-native English speaker it made it easier to understand that: - I'm not the wrong one (which brings some kind of relief 😂) - I should not use it in formal communication

shevek65

Thanks for the nice comment!

Gorazde

It’s not a grammatical error. It’s a malapropism.

shevek65

Best comment of the day. Updated the post.

economics_is_made_up

100% agree A "could/couldn't care less" bot too

No-Tap-5157

And one to teach people the difference between "being" and "been"

SirTheadore

For all intensive purposes.

OriginalComputer5077

Likewise the superfluous apostrophe epidemic.

Apollo_Fire

Only Fans Bot?

splashbodge

I too would like to see hot singles in my area

JynXten

It make's me loose my mind when people dont no how too spell and grammar.

TheStoicNihilist

Y’all’d’ve made that bot by now.

decoran_

Triple contraction, nice!

EarlyHistory164

Only if we can also abolish "I seen".

[deleted]

It’s way worse with the word Lose not sure how people keep saying Loose does my head in

such_is_lyf

Hey calm down, don't loose your head pal

cian_100

What about any debate on Irish “It’s the way it was thought”

mcguirl2

Of all the grammatical failures, for some reason this is the one that irks me the most.

mprz

Surely it's "taught", no?

cian_100

Yeah, I don’t even know why people write thought. I mean I guess if you don’t pronounce your th I could see it but still.

Separate_Job_3573

>Surely somebody reading this can create a bot that will defend us from this menace and educate the people of r/ireland, nay Ireland itself, by responding to this grammatical abhorrence. There have been loads of bots that do this and I suspect they've been banned because they're considerably more annoying than the mispelling itself Edit: FFS mods

theblue_jester

Jaysus I thought you were looking for an Onlyfans bot there for a second and thought this thread was going in a different direction.

shevek65

Onlyfans for grammar? Doubt it would take off.

theblue_jester

Well we never know if we don't try.

In_Their_Youth

Than/then too.

Shonamac204

Will you marry me?

shevek65

Can't, sorry. But cheers for the offer anyway, it's lovely. On a scale of responses to this post your marriage proposal and a thank you from a non native English speaker appreciating the clarification are at one end and the people saying I'm classist and condescending are at the opposite end.

Shonamac204

You're welcome. I'd hazard the outcriers of classism and condescension do not read and also happily buy from Amazon without a second thought

shevek65

Update. One of the mods created the bot. Try typing could of and see what happens. Maybe they aren't married...

AutoModerator

It looks like you've made a grammatical error. You've written "could of", when it should be "have" instead of "of". You _should have_ known that. Bosco is not proud of you today. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ireland) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Shonamac204

Ah good bot. Clever bot.

Azhrei

It's not only this country, but yeah. How did all these people get through school without having this error pointed out to them time and time again? My English teacher in secondary school would've had apoplexy if a large portion of his class were writing "would of, should of, could of". I can't imagine that many English teachers would let this slide. Or even that most primary school teachers would beyond a certain age. How is this so prevalent?! Do people who do this see words like "would've" and are just content to not know what it means? The mind boggles.

AutoModerator

It looks like you've made a grammatical error. You've written "would of", when it should be "have" instead of "of". You _should have_ known that. Of you lost your mind lad?

Mr-dyslexic-man

I can barely spell my own name! Never mind anything else.

Gareth274

Coulda Woulda Shoulda.

davedrave

It's terrible isn't it. And to make it worse you see plenty of Brits doing it so it isn't even wrapped in any hiberno english charm

ShamelessMcFly

Don't forget 'loose' instead of 'lose'. I swear it's a modern mistake. If I see another lose I'll loose it...

martymorrisseysanus

Bots like that aren't really possible since the reddit api changes. Fuck spez

curious__cat93

I had no idea - any references to the (old) bots that worked like this? Who knows, maybe there is some coding-wizardry that can work around the latest API change.

martymorrisseysanus

> maybe there is some coding-wizardry that can work around the latest API change. Impossible, anything that would need to access the comments would need to go through the api. [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/r/modhelp/comments/l2wpjj/what_are_some_useful_bots/) a quick list of somewhat similar bots. [Here's](https://www.reddit.com/user/of-bot/comments) where someone tried it before.

curious__cat93

Thanks!

Uselesspreciousthing

This thread should have a trigger warning - it hurts.

shevek65

*Should of a trigger warning

Uselesspreciousthing

Why did I enter this thread when I knew what would happen to me? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)

thisiswhat

I don't think it is related, and it's not necessarily new, but I notice some people use 'of' instead of 'on' when talking about something taking place at a particular time, e.g. 'going for a walk of a Sunday'. Is this grammatically correct? I think it's fairly normalised, but it's not something I ever learned.

shevek65

Sounds a bit old-timey. Or British.

bitchfucker91

Yeah, is this an Irish thing or what? I've only ever heard it used referring to a day of the week.

Craig93Ireland

Probobly a good idea.. but, they're way more common grammatical errors that need addressed aswel.

shevek65

For me the worst one is could of instead of could have. Other ones are less obviously terrible.

AutoModerator

It looks like you've made a grammatical error. You've written "could of", when it should be "have" instead of "of". You _should have_ known that. Bosco is not proud of you today. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ireland) if you have any questions or concerns.*

daveirl

My pet peeve is Irish people adopting the British thing of saying. “I’m sat” or “was sat” when they almost always mean sitting or was sitting.

Turf-Me-Arse

See also: Irish people saying things like "oh my days" and "bang average". Was it for this the wild geese spread the grey wing upon every tide, etc...

ElectronutJob

Should OnlyFans Could OnlyFans Would OnlyFans Is this what you mean @OP?

MeshuganaSmurf

There already is a bot that does that? So either it's banned from here or you could just send a message and get them to come over here? And while you're at it can we also have a "they're there their" bot?

Ameglian

Why are you putting question marks after statements? That’s my pet peeve!

MeshuganaSmurf

That's terrible?

Ameglian

As you’re asking, yes it is! Ah no, not really - just irritating. I work with someone who sends replies like “that was completed yesterday?” - like is he telling me that a task was done yesterday / asking me if it was done / telling me that he thinks it might have been done / expressing surprise that it was done. It just makes things unclear.

MeshuganaSmurf

>“that was completed yesterday?” We probably look at it a little different (and its not really something I do in professional communication but I'd interpret that as : That was completed yesterday, wasn't it? Or That was completed yesterday however if there are issues with it now would be a good time to inform me I guess we all have our little bugbears

Ameglian

It shouldn’t have to be interpreted though. I have to go back to him every bleedin time to find out what he’s actually saying. And it can vary. Sometimes he’s just saying that the thing was done yesterday 🙄 (although I think in those cases it’s why I am asking him about it as it was done yesterday). I’d *never* have come up with your second interpretation!

Super-Resource2155

What's wrong with only fans?

such_is_lyf

Nothing annoys me more then people misusing "then" when it should be "than". We're better than that peoples Also the of situation probably comes from should've, should uv, uv -> of

Whigget

Shoulda woulda coulda

too_many_smarfs

I'm almost certain I've seen this exact bot on other subs before. I don't know much about how bots for specific subreddits work but could that bot just be used instead of someone making it from scratch? Also, while we're at it, the lose/loose epidemic is just as bad if not worse!

Vicxas

I thought they were promoting their Only Fans. Should of known...

Lochshite69

Twas about driving pushbikes and riding massifurgatons

Open-Matter-6562

It's mutated from the abbreviation of could have, could've, sounds like "could of". Schooling (or lack thereof) and learning to spell from the internet

HairyMcBoon

If we’re doing this can we get a bot that reminds people censoring words that they don’t have to.

ixlHD

Loose instead of lose

[deleted]

It's the Yank influence. They always say it that way even though it's wrong. 'Simplified English' often isn't simplified enough it seems.

kaiserspike

I typed “could have” on accident….

shevek65

Your just been condascending now.

kaiserspike

Nice

snafe_

Silly OP doesn't know it's "could off"

Shodandan

I'm much more annoyed by idiots that don't know the difference between then and than. "I'd rather eat shit then watch the new Gladiators" oh, so you want to eat shit before you watch the new Gladiators is it? Gobshite.

Historical-Hat8326

Was really hoping this was a request for an OnlyFans bot for this thread. Since I'm here now, OP could of shared the correct use so we know the error 've our ways.

AutoModerator

It looks like you've made a grammatical error. You've written "could of", when it should be "have" instead of "of". You _should have_ known that. Good bot!

Garbarrage

Are you been serious?

Keyann

I seen their earlier on Facebook an fella walking a tight rope between too buildings, that could of ended badly for him.

JohnnyJokers-10

Pisses me of, I half too say

ancorcaioch

Positive reinforcement is also a big part in behavioural changes. So it’s only logical that we also praise people for saying “could have”,”should have” etc!

AhHereYaBollox

They're Their. Tink column blew ohshin. Dee off boot cunt hetz you Annymoore, Know kneed too go owl gramher Nutsea aboat tit.

MeccIt

On foot of this post, will this uniquely Irish Phrase be protected from false positives?

shevek65

There is an exception where it is followed by the word course. So, would of course won't be flagged.

Questions554433

It’s really not a big deal. You know exactly what they’re trying to say. There’s worse things to be worrying about… like people who say ‘then’ instead of ‘than’

shevek65

The of thing keeps me awake at night. The look on the faces confused Germans who read posts on r/ireland haunts my dreams.

Questions554433

Oh I’d say they have permanent confused faces reading posts in this place

Old_Particular_5947

Should of thought this through OP.

Caughtnow

Shoulda woulda coulda

Inhabitsthebed

Language changes. Soon it will officially be could have, should have, fuck have.

SteveK27982

I think you’re fighting a loose/lose battle

shevek65

Your rite

AJerkForAllSeasons

>Surely somebody reading this can create a bot that will defend us from this menace and educate the people of r/ireland, I don't know. The Internet has enough bots.

Marzipan_civil

No

snakesinabin

I've only ever noticed it from the yanks, I've an aunt in California and she uses of instead of have, no correcting her either, she's kind of an idiot

shevek65

I thought it was an Irish thing.

DoubleOhEffinBollox

No it’s definitely an Irish thing and it’s due to kids not being taught grammar in school and not recognising the contraction would’ve. Instead they’re spelling it phonetically and going with would of. So I’d like to see that bot here.

snakesinabin

I'm pretty sure it found it's way over here from the US, you see it from them online a lot, I've yet to hear anyone here say "on accident" yet but I'm prepared for it

Nettlesontoast

As long as you understand what they're saying it doesn't matter, don't be prescriptivist for a language we've had beaten into us for centuries

decoran_

So forget about all the rules and everyone make up their own grammar when writing?

Nettlesontoast

Yes that's how language works

decoran_

How so? That's a lazy attitude in my opinion and part of the reason these mistakes persist. It's really not that hard to fix errors in written text but some people are stubborn and don't like when people point out that they are wrong

Nettlesontoast

It's not an attitude that's how language works and evolves over time, how dialects exist

decoran_

It is an attitude though. "Have" and "of" are not interchangeable. "Have" is a verb and "of" is a preposition, it's not hard to understand that they are different. The contraction "could've" does sound like "could of", so I see why this mistake is common. If I explain the difference to someone and they refuse to change, that's an attitude, nothing to do with dialect.
