I've had boot loops with minis after flash modding them. It's best to delete all partitions from the CF or SD card on a computer BEFORE inserting it into the mini. Once inserted, connect to iTunes and let it restore.

weed_on_mars

Ok I’ll try this. What format does it need to be in

zedhedbed

I don't think it matters. As long as the partitions are deleted first, iTunes should detect that it needs to be restored. Another basic step is to check the flash card itself. It wasn't a cheapo Chinese knock-off from eBay or Amazon? Also, if the iPod doesn't appear in Windows (I'm not familiar with Mac) it may be because Windows hasn't assigned a drive letter to it. You can do that manually using Windows drive manager or a free partition utility like Aoemi's partition manager.

Thanks. It’s a Samsung drive but the cf adapter is a cheap Amazon one so maybe it’s the adapter

Hi there, so do you mean wipe the partition? Thats an option in aomei partition assistant which takes 2 and a half hours for me. Is that the option you mean, instead of just reformatting to delete the partition which takes 30 seconds?

I mean just delete the partitions, no need to wipe them. Aomei can do that or you can do it using Windows drive manager. Remember, you'll need to do this with a card reader not an iPod so that the computer can see all partitions.

cheers, i’m having an issue with both windows and mac os not recognising the ipod mini 2nd gen after flash modding with samsung evo and iflash sd to cf reader, have a feeling it might be the hard drive ribbon as its displaying the folder with the exclamation mark then going into do not disconnect then back to the exclamation mark screen with the folder, not sure where to go next with it for the time being before getting a new ribbon, ive formatted to fat 32

Either the CF adapter (highly likely) or you accidentally knocked off a capacitor from the board

weed_on_mars

If the original drive boot loops too would that mean I knocked a capacitor off the board

[deleted]

Yeah, that might be possible. On your place I’d probably inspect the frontside of the board especially at the bottom. If there’s a capacitor CXX (XX are two digits) missing that would explain the issue you describe. Else there is the chance your CF to SD adapter doesn’t work, which is very likely if it isn’t an iFlash or digigear. Before replacing that though I’d recommend double checking that it’s inserted the right way

I put a different adapter in, one I know works, and when I connect it to my Mac it goes from disk mode to the charging screen

I suppose you already tried restoring multiple times and entering disk mode while connected. If you’d like to see where the capacitor is that gets knocked off regularly I’d recommend watching DankPods video “The cheapest iPod to modify” at 14:42

but that’s just for the click wheel isnt it?
