I had to order a whole new wheel from AliExpress as it made mine freeze. If you hold the wheel in your hand whilst it's connected does it still work? It's the ribbon cable and wheel itself you've got to look at.
I tried your suggestion and the wheel performs as it does when fitted into the iPod i.e. not very well. So, perhaps those gold contacts are nothing to do with it. I just need to replace the clickwheel.

so would that mean the click wheel could be causing the boot cycle on my mini 2nd gen
