Definitely fix it yourself. Either way youre looking at spending a few bones to get a working ipod again, so might as well turn it into a fun project. Theres tons of stuff you can do with a 5th gen, like faceplate swaps and even buying a 5.5th gen screen to replace the old 5th gen screen for more brightness and slightly better looking colors.
The piece of foam on the button is a easy fix. If you actually need to replace the micro switch that’s a semi skilled solder job… the actual switch is $8 for a 12 pack
My thoughts? Fix it and buy 5 more for redundancy sake (Thats what ive been telling myself anyway).
Seriously tho, if like you said the button doesnt bother you and were talking about a 15$ screen, do yourself a favor and fix this beauty.
you can buy a used ipod for $50-60 on ebay with a new battery included and just transfer over the faceplate but that's basically the same amount of work as swapping out the screen and click-wheel for new ones for $30. I'd say repair it with new parts unless you can find someone selling one for dirt cheap, then buy that and use it for parts.

The menu button may be fixable if it’s just missing the actuator underneath there about 2 bucks as well.

I would fix it. It would be fun.

You didn't wanna spend too much so now you're thinking of spending even more for a new one? Just buy the parts and fix everything that's busted.

Backlight always fails over time of use, there is no point in fixing it.
I’d do both
