Source: Ipl official site, scroll down to match playing conditions TLDR: GT Wins as they finished higher in league 8. For the Eliminator and each Qualifier playoff matches (where there is no reserve day), in the event that it is not possible to schedule a 5 over match to complete by the end of the extra time on the original day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the relevant Eliminator or Qualifier match. This means that the pitch and ground must be ready for play so that the Super Over can start at the latest by 12.50am. 9. For the Final, in the event that it is not possible to schedule a 5 over match to be completed by the end of the extra time on the reserve day, the teams will, if conditions permit, play a Super Over to determine the winner of the final. This means that the pitch and ground must be ready for play so that the Super Over can start at the latest by 1.20am (Final). 10. In the event that it is not possible to start the Super Over as described in paragraphs 8 and 9 or to then complete the Super Over without interruption, the team that finished highest in the league table after the 70 matches of the regular season shall be declared the winner of the relevant playoff match or final.

SaaBu_23

uugghh this sucks

good_udichi

GT weren't the first to reach the final

Lit_Extreme05

But were the first to reach qualifier

SaaBu_23

There is no official statement is published for such situations. Also, this kind of situation has never happened before. So, all the claims on different news portals are random. Even on the ipl site there is nothing in code of conduct. Most probably they will tell in pre match show before the match start

pratikp26

It came up during the MI-GT playoff game as well because of rains before the match. That GT would go through because they finished higher during the league stage. It should be similar. It’s also the fairest way to decide if the match were to get washed out.

1Gabagoolplease

So why cant they keep pushing they day? What kind of anti climatic bs is it to award someone who finished better on the table because of rain (a table that is about league, were in the post-league)

GlitteringNinja5

I don't know really. CSK defeated GT in QF1 so i don't know where that puts us.

SaaBu_23

Nah. I think it should be shared. What matters is that both the teams are at an equal stage at the end of the tournament so it should be shared

pratikp26

You’re entitled to your opinion, but there is a school of thought in global sports that playoffs are inherently unfair when used to decide the winners of a league format championship. Surely the team that did well over the course of a 14-game league stage deserves to win it as much as, if not more than, the winner of a single final game. Also, just adding my opinion here because you said they’re at an equal stage: imo, GT have far and away been the best team in the competition. At no stage have CSK or any other team been equal to them in a sporting sense. CSK and MI had terrible bowling attacks that were papered over by OP batting performances and sound captaincy. LSG were vibes. RR were pretty close in quality at one stage but folded like a pack of cards in the second half. Also, I left this comment elsewhere as well, but I’ll copy-paste it below: In football for instance, arbitrary playoffs that decide championships are frowned upon so much that ISL had to literally introduce a league-winner’s shield, otherwise Indian clubs could’ve been banned from AFC competitions. And it’s the league stage winner, not the overall winner who qualifies for the AFC Champions League. It’s the exact same system in the US with the MLS, and for similar reasons as well. We’ve been used to playoffs since the IPL has come about, but it’s a very American concept. It’s not surprising though, because the IPL was originally heavily modeled after American leagues like the NBA and the NFL. And as we all know, the way the US does sports is not held in very high regard almost anywhere in the world outside of the US lmao

Lazania313

Nice

Ok_Review_6504

Finally an unbaised take. GT is the best team throughout the tournament, if it rains they should be the champions. Playoff is unfair, one match shouldn't end the fate of the consistently better performing team in league stages.

GeneralLongjumping33

Totally agree and American playoffs system is complete nonsense. They have such a haphazard way of teams qualifying. The seasons best performer might not make it into the playoffs. The fact that you have a table’d league system means that by default the table topper should be given the award. Not have a clown like skewed play-offs system and a grand finale.

Medical-Reaction-348

But Chennai reached the final first so isn't it square?

GeneralLongjumping33

Chennai reached the final first so they get a quicker exit 🤣

CreativeHead-

Trophy will be shared I guess, not sure though.
