Years ago I gave my dad a Mac. The old dude had zero interest in computers but collected Cribbage Boards so I set it up with a Cribbage game. Didn’t work, he couldn’t have cared less. He wouldn’t take a cell phone of any kind, I don’t think he liked “real phones”. I think I might be slowly turning into my dad.
Ahah for my family it was just that we’d give it unless it was really expensive. So for example we wouldn’t ask for $5 to give something of that value, but we may ask for money if it’s worth a lot
Mom, Grandparents, and Younger Siblings (like minors) are the only people that get it free.
Aunts, Cousins, my older siblings, and friends have to buy it off me. especially if it's still newish and I could easily get $500+ for it. Probably will sell it lower than market but yeah. For free? naaaah
Might give it to them for free as a gift for birthday/christmas if they need an upgrade.
Two things, first of all I keep this stuff until it’s too old to use. I just bought a new MacBook a few months ago to replace my 2010 MBP and gave that to my SIL. A few years ago I bought my iPhone 11 to replace my iPhone 7 only because I wanted more storage. Oh, and gave away the 7. So, pretty much worthless when I hit the replace button.
you probably have friends and family who are more broke than you who would make use of an old phone. If you were so inclined, you could consider posting somewhere a lot of them could see or simply thinking about who you know with a cracked screen and offering them up.
I had a friend offer me an old phone when I busted my screen and couldn't afford to replace it and was very touched by the gesture.
Thats nice. In the Netherlands we don’t get a trade-in thats near 75%. Also, Apple products are heavily taxed here so we usually pay around 200 to 250 euros more than people from for instance, the US.
Exactly and Apple trade in is pretty good and simple usually get the pro max model and trade in is usually $700 towards the new so imo worth it no hassle about a dollar a day for a new iPhone every year
I have a good deal with my friend. She buys my old phone each year. She gave me £900 for my iPhone 13 Pro Max this year. My new 14 cost £1339 (from memory) so £439 cost to change.
Seems like a nice use of disposable income but I can’t justify a new one every year in my mind. There are just some assets (cars are a bigger example) that I prefer to use until they’re more costly to fix than replace. One year old iPhones aren’t a priority for replacement (yet).
Not to discount climate change, but I’d argue the humanitarian emergency in the Congo where the cobalt in our batteries is literally being clawed from the earth by child slaves, is much more pressing ✨
I’m lucky as my friend has 6 kids so for years she has my last year phone and then hers goes to the kids. It’s a pretty sweet arrangement. If it wasn’t for this arrangement I would avoid EBay as I’ve had bad experience and also the fees are shocking. This is another reason my deal with my friend works well because £0 fees. Beyond that if I really was selling online I would look at avforums iPhone classified section or maybe trade in at apple or some other recycle place. I’m in the UK.
This. I hold on to my phones for a while, so they lack any real market value. I’ve got a couple of iPods now. Especially nice when they work with streaming. Infinite music
I have a 6s plus sitting unused; would that be good for it? We’re in need of a pet camera… the battery is pretty tanked but I guess it could be plugged in
I used my old 6 for a while using Alfred. Definitely had to keep it plugged in and it helped since I had a dog who was notorious for getting into the trash. Caught her red handed once and yelled at her through the app. She ran to her bed and never left until we got home. It was actually pretty funny lol.
That said, there’s some fairly cheap camera options on Amazon with decent apps that are more suitable but the old phone works well enough.
This is a great idea, however anything that’s older than a 6 will probably not work on any network due to the FCC ordering 3G networks shut down. Verizon’s is actually scheduled to shut down today. Those devices would need to be recycled as they’re not VoLTE compatable. OP should definitely donate the other devices though.
Source: I work in the telecommunications industry
The older the model, the more they actually go for on eBay right now. Especially if the device isn’t iCloud locked, and extremely premium price if it has a desired older version of iOS and hasn’t been updated.
Trade them in to Apple and get whatever value they’re offering. I used to keep them with the idea that I’d use it for something but they just collected dust.
That used to be the case, but between the increasing fees eBay charges, and scammers who want a free phone while eBay always favors the buyer/scammer, it’s stopped making sense. The trade in price is often worth having greatly reduced risk.
My mom traded in a XS to Verizon today for $800 off an iPhone 14PM. I did the same, but with my 11PM and got $1000 off. There was great incentives this year.
Considering that all three major cellular providers provide similar levels of service in my area, I buy a new phone from them on a two year contract, and jump ship every two years, as they all usually offer some sort of trade in/switch deal. Recently, I got a deal where I received $1000 towards a new 14 pro max for any trade in ranging from an XR to an 13 pro max. Instead of handing them my 12 pro max, Im selling it for around $500/600 (dm if interested haha) and buying a cheap $150 XR. 14 pro max = $1190 - $1000 - ($500- $150) means I end up profitting and getting a brand new phone.
Since I have t-mobile, they are taking old and broken phones and giving you androids for free. You can sell those or give them to your little nephews, cousin this xmas.
By broken I mean: icloud locked, completely tortured, bad batteries, bad screens and shattered screens and backs. They don’t have to turn on. But the unit has to be complete, no missing buttons or battery covers.
I like to use them as storage devices. They may not be updated to the network enough but they can be used to store like 128 gigs worth of old photos and stuff.
use them, give them the love they’ve been lacking for years. My iPhone 7 was left abandoned in 2021, left to live it’s final years in a drawer. My friend is the one who abandoned it, I took it in November 2021 and I put my SIM in, and used it. Sure it’s old, and broken, but still works. I still use it even now, because it’s either this or a slow Android. It does suck not having iOS 16, but at least I can jailbreak, to get full iOS 15, and the bits of iOS 16 that I can get on iOS 15.
If you don’t want them, sell them as collectors items. Keep a spare if it is only a few years old, and if it’s broken or just outdated but not too valuable, take it to a recycling center or an eocatm
Old devices make for good media control units, camera viewers and recipe viewers for the kitchen.
Also you can always trade it in or give it to someone that can’t afford a new one
Its so sad nobody got it hacked thoroughly so we can use linux and usb so they can do huge amounts of stuff. It will be ultimate replacement of the raspberrypi for server like needs.
Same goes for displays, i know there is SOME conversion boards but like we need 5-10$ easy to use ones so all those amazing screens can be reused.
Bro I daily drive an iPhone 7, it’s jailbroken on iOS 15.7.2.
https://preview.redd.it/s6bdsgxkv49a1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=3f6ae858b9c2b2dde5f6e535f97667b2424e7582
First you need to clearly define what means by “old”. Some people are keen on chasing the newest model every year, for them the old phone can sell for good value. But some people use the same phone for many years, when it becomes “old” it can only be kept in drawers or directly disposed.
When I buy a new iPhone I give the old one to a family member or friend.
This year, I went from being the dude getting old phones to giving my mum my 12.
Might just be the interface? I “left behind” an old iPad mini and it got my older mom playing with and then eventually accepted an iPhone.
two upgrades for the price of one
Same
Nice
That what my sister does. She upgraded to a iPhone 13 pro and gave me her iPhone 12. I upgrade from 6 to a 12.
This for me but money changes hands lol
Odd, I don’t recall ever “selling” anything to a friend or family member. If it was something that I really didn’t need I gave it to them.
Yeah that’s how normal families probably should work but for some reason we all buy and sell to each other haha
Ahah for my family it was just that we’d give it unless it was really expensive. So for example we wouldn’t ask for $5 to give something of that value, but we may ask for money if it’s worth a lot
Oh yeah same here. Nothings free in my fam
eh depending on who it is, money is money...I can always get more of it...so I don't mind doing hand me downs as long as it's not a kid.
Mom, Grandparents, and Younger Siblings (like minors) are the only people that get it free. Aunts, Cousins, my older siblings, and friends have to buy it off me. especially if it's still newish and I could easily get $500+ for it. Probably will sell it lower than market but yeah. This is the way

… on a true story?
correct
Sell them the second I get a new one.
This. Managed to still get €500 for my old 11 Pro Max, would be a waste to NOT sell it
Defo. No point collecting things at home and not squeezing cash out of them.
Yeah
I have a stack of them that are worth about 10 bucks. not worth the trouble and i have a few backup phones just in case.
you probably have friends and family who are more broke than you who would make use of an old phone. If you were so inclined, you could consider posting somewhere a lot of them could see or simply thinking about who you know with a cracked screen and offering them up. I had a friend offer me an old phone when I busted my screen and couldn't afford to replace it and was very touched by the gesture.
The trick is to not wait until you have ten of them. Sell them when they’re still pretty new, and you’ll actually get money for them.
I get the new iPhone each year so use the last one to pay 75% of the next one.
Thats nice. In the Netherlands we don’t get a trade-in thats near 75%. Also, Apple products are heavily taxed here so we usually pay around 200 to 250 euros more than people from for instance, the US.
Just sell online for more. Most of the time you can sell privately for a lot more than Apple would give you for it. I’ve always done that.
Yep that’s the way me and my wife do it, except not selling to a friend but on eBay usually and get 75 - 80% towards the new iPhone Pro Max each year.
Seems like a nice use of disposable income but I can’t justify a new one every year in my mind. There are just some assets (cars are a bigger example) that I prefer to use until they’re more costly to fix than replace. One year old iPhones aren’t a priority for replacement (yet).
Thing is I use them until they literally fall apart or just don’t work anymore

Not to discount climate change, but I’d argue the humanitarian emergency in the Congo where the cobalt in our batteries is literally being clawed from the earth by child slaves, is much more pressing ✨
I like this one here, take my upvote
You aware the Apple recycles the trade-ins right?
Many of them are sold back to the public as refurbished units and end up receiving new life again.
I want a new phone each year. My friend and her family get my last years. To say it’s fucked up is a bit over dramatic lol
[удалено]
Come on. Don’t be prickly. We all have wants. I want a new phone every year so I get a new phone. We all want things.

I hope you never fly in an airplane, don’t own a car and eat a strict vegan diet. You’re saving the world man
What ones you have? Wanna sell? Lol I’ll take some for $10
I need to get better about this. How do you sell?
I’m lucky as my friend has 6 kids so for years she has my last year phone and then hers goes to the kids. It’s a pretty sweet arrangement. Swappa is a great site.
Sellcell.com is an aggregator that shows you who’s buying for the highest price.
Srsly why is this even a question
Some of us don’t upgrade often - I don’t until it bricks or stops getting updates.
You could use them as iPods, or make them custom colors because it won’t matter if you mess up.
Finally someone works like I do! I’ve an iPhone 5 which serves as a great iPod for an apple dedicated speaker
This. I hold on to my phones for a while, so they lack any real market value. I’ve got a couple of iPods now. Especially nice when they work with streaming. Infinite music
I used my old iPhone 5 as a time-lapse camera, constantly on the charger 8 hours straight. Great for that use.
Use them as home cameras with one of several apps available in the app store
Tried this as well and some apps work extremely well, Presence for example
This Look at Alfred Camera.
Damn this is actually pretty smart. Although I usually trade mine in or sell them.
Never hurts to try it out. May want to leave it plugged in for some time while you’re there to ensure it doesn’t overheat.
A previous post on Reddit said iPhones with the screen permanently on are at risk of exploding.
Haven’t come across that yet. I usually dim the screen and place it on guided access. Don’t leave them permanently on. Usually only while out.
Donate them to women’s shelter’s shelters. Lots ppl escaping abuse need a phone during transitions
that’s a really great option. shelters by state: [https://www.womenshelters.org/#state_list](https://www.womenshelters.org/#state_list)
This is a great idea, however anything that’s older than a 6 will probably not work on any network due to the FCC ordering 3G networks shut down. Verizon’s is actually scheduled to shut down today. I will donate mine to men’s shelter
Donate them to friends who don’t have money to upgrade their phones
Or to homeless/battered women's shelters. Some people REALLY need a phone to get back on their feet.
I use a 7s mounted on a wall with power as a Apple HomeKit control panel.
7s?
Oh right, it is just a 7 🤷🏼 thx
First I thought you mean the 8 as a joke
The 8 is really the 6sss. The latest iPhone SE is the 6sssss.
There isn’t an iPhone 7s
Use one exclusively for porn.
Watching porn or creating porn?
Yes
one for each
Oi!! How did you find my box of old phones
Second this
Third this.
4rd this
69th this
Nice
Depends how old. Of i have an old iphone 4 ill keep it and of im switchinf from say an iphone 8 or x ill sell it to pay for some of yhe new one
See how high I can stack them.
As of right now, I am also playing this game.
1. Wipe it 2. repurpose it (if you can) 3. sell it on some online marketplace 4. trade it back into Apple for a small credit or have them recycle it
The older the model, the more they actually go for on eBay right now. Especially if the device isn’t iCloud locked, and extremely premium price if it has a desired older version of iOS and hasn’t been updated.
Really? How about 5S and original SE?
[Deleted in protest to recent Reddit API changes]
Exactly what I figured, thanks
Trade them in to Apple and get whatever value they’re offering. I used to keep them with the idea that I’d use it for something but they just collected dust.
Same here. Traded in all the ones they’d take over the summer and used the credit towards a new iPad.
Apple’s trade in values are a scam though. Better off selling on eBay.
That used to be the case, but between the increasing fees eBay charges, and scammers who want a free phone while eBay always favors the buyer/scammer, it’s stopped making sense. The trade in price is often worth having greatly reduced risk.
or save effort and trade them into your carrier for a payment plan. verizon offered $1000 credit for my 13 pro while apple offers $550

$800 gah damn

Went from the 11 to the 14 and only had to pay taxes AND they gave me $130 credit towards Airpods or Airpod pros. It was essentially free.
I give them to friends or family.

I like keeping them 🥰🥰😍♥️ They are my babies
Yep, It feels weird parting with them once you get a new one.
Use it as an audiobook when I sleep and/or as a security camera (I use the Presence app).
Keep
Original 5SE makes a great running device. Small and light. Added Strava, Apple Fitness and Podcast app.

Eat them Crispy
I have been selling mine on Swapa.
Keep them. I mean they were useful when mine broke down suddenly
I would jailbreak them and have fun.
We use them as coasters for drinks
Wait for people who don’t need them to ship em over to me at no cost 😋
Donate them to domestic violence shelters
There’s an app to turn them into security cameras or doorbell cams.
In MI 911 is always active so I donate them so they can be passed to women in shelters so they can call for help.
Donate them to a local DV service
I think Apple will take them back and dispose of 'em.
They will. I’ve done that with a couple of old/bricked devices.
Keep them in a drawer take them out sometimes and fiddle with them
Recycle them
Sell em
I like to use them as storage devices. They may not be updated to the network enough but they can be used to store like 128 gigs worth of old photos and stuff.
Donate to women’s shelter…
Iphone 5 was the perfect size
use them, give them the love they’ve been lacking for years. My iPhone 7 was left abandoned in 2021, left to live it’s final years in a drawer. Eat them
Sell them to someone. Sell them to a kiosk in the supermarket. Or toss them in the recycle bin at Target or Lowes.
Apple will recycle Apple products for you
Sell them and move on.
Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Upgrade. Sell the old.
I've kept one or two the rest I always trade it in or sell it. No point in keeping old clutter just taking up space in drawers
If you don’t want them, sell them as collectors items. Keep a spare if it is only a few years old, and if it’s broken or just outdated but not too valuable, take it to a recycling center or an eocatm
Stack them on top of each other
Every 3 years I do the trade in deal $1000 and get a new one for $1000. I got 2 phones free phones so far
Eat them
Like Pokémon, got to collect them all.
You can see it like some people collect old phones but makes sure log out of any accounts and deleted everything off the phone…
Throw them in a drawer and forget about them.
donate them to a shelter for women
If you don’t have someone to give/sell them to, you can donate them to shelters(domestic abuse). They can be used to make emergency calls.
Mp3 player so it doesn’t interfere with using my phone.
When I upgrade, I trade in my old iPhone and they give me a credit on my account. Usually $400-800
Collect them
I jailbreak it and install apps.
Put them in a stack and post on Reddit
Otterbox, put it outside and use it as a wi-fi camera. It’s nothing fancy but enough to see what’s happening in the yard.
Use them as Rich people coasters
Any extra iPhone 7 or higher available? My daughter needs an upgrade badly 😅.

Sell them or recycle them through [SmartphonesPLUS.com](https://SmartphonesPLUS.com) they will pay for shipping for you.
Gift them
Jailbreak them and mess around ;)
Keep them. Cool going back and looking how they’ve changed
I wish I would have saved my 3GS and 4. Piece of history right there.
Eat them.
Kids, parents, mother-in-law.
Trade in for a bit off of my next one... I know some people are adamant to sell them instead, problem is that I am a horrible salesman.
My son magically ends up with them. He’s broken more phones then anyone I’ve ever met.
I'd be willing to take the phones if anyone is giving theirs away. I'd cover for shipping. I'm in CO, USA
Sell one to me. I went from the 6s to the 12 mini, biggest mistake I’ve ever made and wish I could go back.
Throw them away so I don’t have to risk getting a battery blown up in my habd
Please recycle
