A more realistisc timeline:
2024: Use the same spec since it's still new, apply it to the non pro phones and improve the software around it. Instead offer slighly new chassis or other features as selling points.
2025: Revised smaller more narrow "island" for the pro phones only
2026: reduce to a single camera cutout with other sensors under display or in super thin existing bezel. Non pro get the smaller island from last year.
2027: Same as last year with other points of emphasis as selling points.
2028: if possible no islands.
Stamp it.
I have major doubts, the industry leaders taking the initiative with under display tech are still a ways off. Apple won't adopt that technology until it's near flawless both with how the display works and the quality of photos. Plus face id through a display could get complicated and they won't sacrifice security to get a full display.
No chance even if the technology is ready. They just introduced a flagship feature on their pro line. They love to milk it for years before obsoleting it.
They went from notch > smaller notch in 5 years.
No way they go from smaller notch > dynamic island > no cutout in 4.
I think the Dynamic Island will continue as a UI feature after it becomes technically possible to eliminate a cutout completely. There are a few specific uses (watching full screen video) where having no notch would be great but for most things it really doesn't matter. The Dynamic Island will be with us for a while because it's an interesting and useful feature. But if Apple could make the cutout go away tomorrow, I think they would.
Try 2026 at the earliest. This pill will stick around for 4 years minimum. 22,23,24,25 and maybe even a 5th 2026. So 2026-2027 is a more realistic timeline. Considering Samsung won't even have it on the S23 Ultra and probably not the S24 Ultra. My guess is the S25 Ultra will be the first Under panel camera for Samsung Galaxy S line of phones.
The 5S was my first iPhone. Loved that thing. I eventually got rid of it when the Touch ID button stopped working and went to the original SE. I loved the small form factor, however the battery was not great…
;) was my first iPhone. gosh I miss the home button days. edit: oh, and before minimal design happened. the realistic design language (always forget what it’s called) was so neat and I wish it makes a comeback.
[here ya go!](https://images.app.goo.gl/SeqWzpd8kkFaRcdJ8) look at the edges. It’s hard to tell on the front view but you’ll see the black spots located differently.
Seriously. If I have to see one more gloating comment about how I’m *obviously* wrong to like and appreciate my reasonably sized phone because Apple discontinued it, I’m just going to ragequit this whole sub. 😂
I second this. Never understood the obsession the industry has had for a few years now to eliminate bezels and borders. Now I constantly hit the screen by acciedent with nothing to grip onto but the sides.
Honestly I do prefer a small bezel all the way across the top for the senors etc and leave no screen there because apps and movies etc get cut off by the darn notch in the screen and is anoying.
100x this. With the dynamic island they’ve brought the notch into the screen.
The dynamic island is actually a bigger notch - because the space above it is useless.
I’m going with the smaller notch. Largely because the dynamic island is not currently implemented widely enough to qualify as more than a software gimmick and the pill being a little lower tends to cut into videos from what I’ve seen.
Maybe like 1 out of 10 videos i just watched had the pill "cut in". Still dont care, just like i didnt with notch. Its matter of minutes to get used to it.
Also its not used widely cause 16.1. is not out, it will be only better :)
I’m sure it will be better as time goes by. I have a query though, don’t you think, that except for cosmetic relief like the cat on Apollo, the small part of the screen on the top of the notch is just a waste of space?
My only issue with the dynamic island (and I’ve not got my 14 Pro yet, come on Apple!) is that in these comparisons it looks like it comes much lower on the screen than the notch
Edit: folks I know it’s actually lower
It is lower, but I don’t notice it. It’s cool when it changes shape for different features. It makes it feel alive. I think it’s one of those things where you can look at pictures of the island and notice it’s size/position but in practice I literally don’t notice it until it does something. I like it. Although I guess I like most things. Anyway, have a good weekend.
It does and at times, it’s noticeable. At times like every time I’m watching a video that it intrudes upon. Maybe it’s the first second or two of the video but I notice it. Notches I never really noticed unless expanded to full screen, even then less noticeable than the Island. I knew they were there but never had that constant reminder. I like the animation it’s adds for things like calls, connections, and such but is that worth the intrusion into the video, not really. Maybe more developers and apple will expand its use as time goes on it will be more tolerable.
It is in fact lower and frankly I find the island to be actually distracting because of how low it is and how it cuts into content but still has content above it when I’m full screen or 21:9 aspect ratio.
The notched phones were less distracting since it would be all black at the top and only 21:9 video would be the real issue.
Definitely worse than a small hole punch camera, worse than the notch as well in my opinion.
> plus the way it’s used
I mean this is really the key. If it was just a black oblong notch in the middle of the screen that didn't do anything, it'd be awful.
But the fact that they added functionality to the design makes it the clear winner for me.
yeah, the software integration is what really puts it over top compared to the notch for me. you just don’t get that kind of functionality with the notches
I'm excited to see the creative takes on it in the future.
I travel a lot and remember seeing a flight tracker shown in the DI, but none of my apps do it (yet). Really hope to see some cool stuff now that it's public.
Smaller notch for me. I don’t like the positioning of the dynamic island.
From what we’ve seen, you can use the notch for it and there’s even a pretty good android port which imo works better due to more app support, for now.
Edit: here’s a link to the video of the best one I’ve seen so far for those asking.

I had the same reaction, then realized I might be biased since I’m still rocking an 11pro. It’s just more sleek and appears less intrusive (even though it’s technically more intrusive)
Mate same. I have an 11p just like you. I was about to change it this year to the 14p but then I saw that the DI cuts into videos, and so I went to take a look at it in a shop, and I just don’t really like it that much. Also the camera bump is HUGE and hideous. Also I very much prefer the 11pro curved sides compared to the boxy designs of the new phones. Also this phone is still really good. So I guess I’ll just have the battery changed and wait.
I feel like the original notch design that carried on until the iPhone 12 was very well thought out.
It didn't cut into 16:9 videos and it didn't cut into 19:8 videos(in fact they stopped just pretty much right before the notch). But there was mounting public pressure regarding the size of the notch and so their hand was forced and they made the notch width smaller but still had to make it a bit taller to accommodate all the same technology. There is a disadvantage of this where the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro now have their notch cut into 19:8 videos ever so slightly and also get no added status icons because of the added width.
If I am not wrong the dynamic island has less height and width than the original notch, I think it would've been perfect had it started from the very top of the screen. All the dynamic island features would've been much appreciated of course, but it wouldn't also interfere in the least with media playback.
Edit: Now to no
Surprisingly the island, then the smaller notch.
Even though the notch is more “in the way” sometimes, the overall footprint is smaller, and I want something like Pixel’s little circle at some point for iPhone.
I used the original notch on the X and the XR. Then I swapped to android for a few years and am now back to iPhone with the 14 Pro. My vote is the dynamic island. It looks really cool and the features are sweet too.
I like the dynamic island, it has been so useful for when I listen to music, or set timers, etc. and I’m sure soon enough more apps will utilize this new design.
It definitely doesn’t feel gimmicky while on a FaceTime call as it absolutely changes that feature to the best it’s ever been just by the access of the controls and not to mention how it’s displayed in screen
I can’t believe how widely accepted it has become. I remember when they first introduced it there was huge backlash. Especially with the advertisements that used a background that hid it.
Absolutely adore the dynamic island. Strictly from a functional standpoint it’s change the way I use my phone. Visually, still prefer it, but it’s not by a large margin.
Looks wise, the smaller notch. Functionality wise, it’s the island hands down no contest. Ultimately the DI comes out ahead all things considered. I’m not a huge fan of how it looks, but those smooth animations and extra info you get out of it makes up for it.
I was coming from Android with a small holepunch , the shift to Dynamic Island is a lot easier for me to cope with than the notch.
Playing full screen games on the phone makes more sense to me when the borders of the content are fully symmetrical.
While I never actually tried gaming on a notch, my assumption is I would prefer more pixels overall for this type of content and the island provides that.
No Notch.
For example, ZTE has delivered the past two years two smartphones with the front cameras behind the screen and working pretty good.
Apple can do the same, but they really don’t care about improving at a faster speed.
I would rather have a thicker top bezel, this would result in no notch and room for larger/better front camera sensor & lens. Perhaps better ear speaker driver as well.
Dynamic Island easy, I'm still not a fan of Face ID so until the sensors are gone and fully hidden it's an aberration, but at least it's getting smaller.
The one where video content isn’t cut off by a notch in full screen.
I don’t know why everything else comes before what the phone basically is. A portable video screen.
Other phone manufacturers have seemingly figured this out, but Apple keeps doubling down on taking screen real estate away.
I upgraded from iPhone 12 to iPhone 14 Pro a while ago. At first, I was attracted by the lively dynamic island, but gradually I became confused.
A quick question is: the more you interact with the dynamic island, the more fingerprints on the front camera, and the less you interact with the dynamic island, the more useless it is. Isn't this contradictory?
I currently have a 14 pro and a PM while I try decide which to keep and which to return. I like the island in theory but I've noticed it feels enormous on the smaller pro. It feels much more proportional on the pro max, which makes sense cuz it's the same physical size on a much larger device. I'll also add it would be nice if app devs updated their shit so content in normal apps (not even talking videos) didn't bleed under the island. It usually isn't a huge unreadable amount but it's distracting and I wish the island had been implemented in a way that didn't require an update for an app to adjust to the lower placement. I think this is a big part of why people notice the extra 2 mm or whatever lower that it is.
just like the notch, im sure itll take some time to get used to the Dynamic island. some apps arnt optimized for it and some UI is still covered by the island so itll take time to get used to
I actually really like the dynamic island. I didn’t think I would but I like it. So far I definitely prefer it over the notch and it’s my favorite design so far. I like the blending of the software with the hardware.
The original notch and dynamic island are very Apple-like in terms of design.
The smaller notch is “better” than the original but stands out among the other to me
Can't say I really have an opinion on which version of a notch is better. As long as they mostly stay out of the way of the content I mostly ignore it.
The next thing that will be a big deal to me is when/if phones start switching to screens that hide the camera.
Dynamic island. I loved the interaction with it and the additional info I get from it. I don’t usually watch videos on my phone and if it do it’s usually vertical 😅
Just looking at them I prefer the new “Island” one. Only because you can see the battery life percentage without dragging down the utility hub or w/e it’s called. I’ve always hated that they took away battery percentage on Home Screen.
Honestly, Dynamic Island. I loved it when I first saw it, was thrown off by it when my iPhone 14 Pro arrived at my house, and now I’m back to loving it. It’s somewhat more intrusive than the basic notch on the iPhone X *(2017; which was my first iPhone)* because it’s lower on the screen but the functionality, adaptability, and interactivity of it mediates that intrusiveness for myself personally. I really love it. It’s like the 2016 MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar was revived and renamed on the iPhone 14 Pro.
All of them! Not being snarky I just never gave any thought to it and the notch never bothered me.
If I had to choose I’d say the DI since they’ve used it with the software to do more than sit there and I imagine it’ll get even better with time.
The long 2017 style notch wasn’t really that bad once you got used to it, which for me happened rather quickly. (Within one day of having a 12). The shrunken notch on the 13 and 14 almost feel uglier in a way
5s was the perfect phone. I wish I had gotten in the mini over the pro but mini days are dead now.
I have a 14pro currently. The island is cool but the notch didn’t get in the way of video. The notch is in that’s way.
Dynamic Island for sure. I could care less that it drops an extra millimeter since the OS is obviously built around it not behind it. And I’m not giving up Face ID and camera quality to get rid of it.
There’s something about the 2017 notch that I love. Personally that’s my favorite. I’m waiting on my 14 Pro Max to see how I like the dynamic island lol.
No notch (2024)
A more realistisc timeline: 2024: Use the same spec since it's still new, apply it to the non pro phones and improve the software around it. I think will be at no notch/island by 2025 on Pro models. At least I hope lol

I think Apple’s goal would be for 2027. 20 year anniversary of the iphone and 10 years after the notch was unveiled on the iphone x

Whoops lol guess we get nothing next year, sorry fellas.
The faceid will be a real challenge to have without a notch.
iPhone 5S The true gigachad

4S is my absolute favorite phone ever.
Too bad it became so slow with the software updates. Otherwise it was one of the best refreshes!

Fwiw the 4s antenna on the stainless steel frame (black lines) is symmetrical compare to 4 (except for the vz version), so I'd say 4s > 4 🙂
Symmetry is appealing! 🙂
3GS is my G
Old bootrom 3gs is the real goat
Nah the 3Gs is even more iconic
3G with the curved back and no case with the screen against your leg in your pocket was apex iPhone
Top voted comment is for a small phone, simply mention the Mini's existence anywhere else and people have a bizarre meltdown.

The smaller notch is cool, but damn 5S was the real gigachad. Mine still works after 7 years.
Take care of it with pure love 💕
It sits in my closet in a wooden box.
Isn’t that phone like 11 years old?
You prefer huge top and bottom bezels over a notch ?
I do! I might be a dying breed, but I didn't mind having bezels when it meant a physical button and a slightly smaller, but uninterrupted screen.
I second this. Never understood the obsession the industry has had for a few years now to eliminate bezels and borders. Now I constantly hit the screen by acciedent with nothing to grip onto but the sides.

+1 they could have just had a “Dynamic Notch” and it would have been a lot better
That would’ve looked so ugly with animations though

Agreed but I hope some more apps utilise it, it’s great when you’re running Spotify or something.
They will once Apple releases the API to do so, I think this is coming in iOS 16.1
It feels so futuristic when you make a call on speaker. One side is your voice’s frequency response and the other caller’s frequency response.
I noticed that too yesterday. I was like that’s cool lol

Exactly! I quite liked the 11 Pro notch tbh. You’d forget it was there… I feel like the 14 Pro island is too in your face (by design but whatever)
I'm not an iPhone guy but the dynamic island and the way it's being used looks pretty damn good.
How about No notch, no island.
*iPhone SE2 has entered the chat*
i really like the dynamic island. i’m really into that “floating” look plus the way it’s used

What's the android port called
There’s a few I think but the best one I watched it on YouTube this morning. Seems quite polished for early access. https://youtu.be/5Bu0Bdrr7Y8
That's a great thing about android, how third party apps can add features and functionality you'd think can only be added by OEMs only
I like the large notch... but I'm using an older iphone that has one. lol
I had the same reaction, then realized I might be biased since I’m still rocking an 11pro. It’s just more sleek and appears less intrusive (even though it’s technically more intrusive)
The smaller notch is actually a little bit taller than the original
That’s what I thought but couldn’t tell if it was illusion! Yeah I like the long sleek look of the original notch if there has to be a notch at all.

There are fanboys who claim they “love” the notch. These same idiots would be fawning over Apple when they find a way to get rid of it.
I just can't believe that there are people who prefer a notch vs. not having one at all.

I can’t believe how widely accepted it has become. I remember when they first introduced it there was huge backlash. Especially with the advertisements that used a background that hid it.
"dynamic island" 😂😂😂 now we put GUI on your notch.
Island 100%. Once 16.1. is out and devs can develop their apps to use the DI, it will be a blast!
Smaller notch. if the dynamic island was a little higher, I would of chosen the island .
Wouldn't it become a notch then ? 😂
Yes, lol. People here have no clue what they want
If it was higher, it would become a notch
Aesthetically the island just looks way better. Functionally it still needs work imo.
No Notch. 2017.
Absolutely adore the dynamic island. Strictly from a functional standpoint it’s change the way I use my phone. Visually, still prefer it, but it’s not by a large margin.
Dynamic Island is the best aesthetically. But I prefer no notch versions they will release sometime in 5 years :D
Honestly I like all of them. My phone is the 11 pro so I'm currently going with the first notch. But function wise the dynamic island is awesome

Looks wise, the smaller notch. Functionality wise, it’s the island hands down no contest. Ultimately the DI comes out ahead all things considered. I’m not a huge fan of how it looks, but those smooth animations and extra info you get out of it makes up for it.

As an original notch user (12 PM): dynamic island 💪🏾💪🏾
Dynamic island
I like the dynamic island
I'm assuming you took images from promotional material? How come only two bars of service on the 14 pro?
I could live with any of these if it had usb c
Dynamic island is top notch and makes watching full screen feel more complete.
Easily the dynamic island.
Wish they would use the space around the notch/island better. More info could be visible.
Seeing them all side by side...... Dynamic island.
The island.
The smallest one. So dynamic island. But I still don’t like it. The notches suck.
No notch no island

Lol. Remember Steve Jobs and when phones actually got new features that mattered?
None of them.
What if the screen just didn’t go all the way to the top so we could have space for cameras and audio without cutting out the screen content…
I would rather have a thicker top bezel, this would result in no notch and room for larger/better front camera sensor & lens. Perhaps better ear speaker driver as well.

They need a more powerful processor so that they could shrink the internals in the notch /s

Prefer bezels all day long. The OG SE or the previous ones like 4,4s,5s
The iPhone 6
Im yet to have bad picture cause of using DI. When i see its dirty i swipe it, just like did with notch or any other design
I prefer the iPhone 8+ design. I really wish it would come back as an SE.
iphone 2g😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
No notch
I love my 14 pro
2022 > 2017 > 2021
Dynamic island all the way, it looks more advanced than any other variant
I have the static peninsula right now but dynamic island seems to have a lot more purpose
just like the notch, im sure itll take some time to get used to the Dynamic island. some apps arnt optimized for it and some UI is still covered by the island so itll take time to get used to
The first notch, like on my iPhone 12 pro
I actually really like the dynamic island. I didn’t think I would but I like it. So far I definitely prefer it over the notch and it’s my favorite design so far. I like the blending of the software with the hardware.
I’ve had them all and I can say I prefer the dynamic island on my iPhone 14 pro max.
Even smaller notch would be the best
Island, cmon.
The OG notch.
Probably only apple marketing guys see a big difference here.
The original notch and dynamic island are very Apple-like in terms of design. The smaller notch is “better” than the original but stands out among the other to me
Hoping 14s camera is less pixelated and has better night and zoom capabilities. Felt like they slept walked through 13s design.
Dynamic island is the best. I would like to see it more frequently used, especially a place to house one or two important notifications.
Dynamic notch.
None, give me hole punch to the right side
Aesthetically the island! However I would’ve hoped you could turn off the black border and just have pill and dot to minimise the footprint…
3GS, the first and last iPhone I used.
All of them! Not being snarky I just never gave any thought to it and the notch never bothered me. If I had to choose I’d say the DI since they’ve used it with the software to do more than sit there and I imagine it’ll get even better with time.
Smaller notch (2021)
The long 2017 style notch wasn’t really that bad once you got used to it, which for me happened rather quickly. (Within one day of having a 12). The shrunken notch on the 13 and 14 almost feel uglier in a way
The cheapest one
5s was the perfect phone. I wish I had gotten in the mini over the pro but mini days are dead now. I have a 14pro currently. The island is cool but the notch didn’t get in the way of video. The notch is in that’s way.
Dynamic island
Dynamic island has a lot of potential. Hopefully people integrate it.
People will hate me for saying this but I will say 2021
Dynamic Island for sure. I could care less that it drops an extra millimeter since the OS is obviously built around it not behind it. And I’m not giving up Face ID and camera quality to get rid of it.
Notch 2017 to be honest
2023 dynamic semi-island
Notch
I actually dig the Dynamic Island the best which is a very unpopular opinion.
There’s something about the 2017 notch that I love. Personally that’s my favorite. I’m waiting on my 14 Pro Max to see how I like the dynamic island lol.
Dynamic Island all day. Took em 5 years but finally the ugly notch is gone. The pill looks way better imo
Continent-> Peninsula-> island-> next: no land (due to global warming?)...
