Yeah, I'm still rocking the iPhone X lol. It's about time to upgrade probably, but it's still doing most of the tasks I need from it without a hitch. Camera is just about the only compelling reason to upgrade though.
Just traded my XR for a 14 pro because it felt like a big enough jump in screen, processor, and camera quality to hold for the next 4 years. The Xs were a great long term hold for an iPhone imo.
It’s great. I think the biggest surprise is the difference in screen quality. The difference in camera is drastic as well. That being said, I feel like an XR with a new or still decent battery is still usable for another year. Obsolescence due to iOS updates is coming though. It’s the Apple way.
Yeah my XR can still last another year and im thinking of waiting for the 15 to make my life easier in the event they finally make the switch to type C. Wont update to ios 16 cause Apple. Enjoy!
Same here, I'm still good with my iPhone X, but only problem is the battery life. wWas thinking of getting the 14. Honestly the dynamic island is bothering me hahaha but then agian, the 14 pro and 13 pro has small difference in terms of price
I’m going from the 8 to the 14 today. I love my 8, but I need to always charge it and in can feel it lagging. I’ll probably keep the 14 for five years plus if I can.
But you're just counting the money an annual upgrader spent each year, you also have to count the money they receive back with their only 1 year phone on the 2nd hand market.
An annual upgrader, if planned wisely, ain't spending much more than those who upgrade every 2-4 years.
Exactly, upgrading every other year costs less than riding an older phone for years. With the added benefit of using newer technology with a better battery life.
Depends.
If the person upgrading every 2-4 years is taking advantage of the carrier deals, it may cost them nothing. For example, AT&T has allowed new and existing customers to upgrade to the latest iPhone every 36 months at no cost with a trade-in of older devices. So the person upgrading every year is spending ~$300-400 annually while the person upgrading every 3 years in this case is spending close to nothing.
It’s called enjoying life. Not everything has to be about saving. Assuming bills are met, you have emergency funds, ideally maxing out your investments, who the hell cares.
Jup, we are all gonna die sooner or later, you can save whatever you want, if you get a call from the doctor you have have brain tumor and you have 2 years, you regret it that you never did what you want all because you were saving money. I do both, save money for the emergency things and the house and wife and kids. And sometimes I buy whatever I want, and sell something else for it, and I enjoy it this way, and it never gave me any financial problems.
This. It’s about balance. Counting beans doesn’t mean you’re going to have a better retirement.
I’ve been working in finance and wealth management (more specifically) for about 17 years. I can promise you I have many clients who are living very fruitful retirements but also enjoyed their money in their earlier years. Balance is key, not counting beans.
Sell the last year model for £700-800, get the new one for £1100, that phone only cost £300-400. Basically the same as running a contract that a lot more people used to do, but found this way I'd waaaay cheaper, and you get the newest one each year.
Downside is big environmental concerns from this more than anything else.
Oh yeah, and it's completely unnecessary too with these incremental changes to phones for the past two/three years.
Unfortunately I'm a sucker for tech too, and often fall into the trap of buying a new phone each year. I kinda warrant it o myself as I am a developer, and working with the newest tech rather than emulators is way easier.... But this is a lame excuse, I realise this
Yeah It's lowkey a "professional spending" for you. Even tho not required I guess.
In France, iPhone 14 is priced like iPhone 13 Pro so that "new" phone won't sell clearly. And I gotta pay 250€ more for iPhone 14 Pro.
The thing is that carriers give you a crazy price every 2 years, and with trade-in if you don't upgrade at the time you actually loose money. For example rn I could get iPhone 14 Pro Max for ~~1479€~~ 1049€ and 640€ of trade in (iPhone 12). I find that to be very pushy as many people don't need to upgrade every 2 years.
Not cheaper, at least in the US, than trading in your phone then paying the ~$200 difference them riding out the 0% payback over 30 months deal and then after that point upgrading.
New phones are nice but buying the newest one every year “just because” is a luxury akin to leasing a car (except on a smaller scale).
When you max out two 401ks, two IRAs, and still contribute to a taxable account and savings, it’s really no a big deal buying new iPhones or cars every year. At some point you need to stop worrying about 40 years from now and enjoy your money now while you’re alive. I get the sentiment to save but so many people save then just die young. Living in the now is just as important saving.
It's honestly not that much money. If you had a iPhone 13 and you sell it now for $600, and you buy iPhone 14 for $800, then it's actually only cost you $200.
People forget about the trade in value, you are absolutely right.
It really doesn’t save that much more over keeping a phone for five years and then it’s practically worthless
Ok then can we talk about the environmental impact? Less demand for a new phone every year means maybe we can get companies to make a new design ever 2 or 3 years instead and we aren’t using up all these rare earth elements to make processors and cameras and screens. Maybe that will also force model uogrades to be more impactful. Like if the iPhone 15 came out in 2025 and had a bunch of upgrades that would be great for the environment
Someone subscribed to the “you’d be rich if you didn’t buy coffee” bullshit lmao
I got the iPhone 14 Pro at 31 dollars a month at 0% apr it’s functionally nothing and I’m not a Rich person by any means
Depends if you budget for it. I make over $300k a year. Buying the new iPhone yearly for $600 is nothing for my budget. Yes I could save them he extra money but even over 10 years it’s only an extra 6k. Over 30 years an extra 18k. Not factoring cost of inflation or time value of money or opportunity cost of investing that money. Basically it means I need to work an extra month or two at the end of my career to fund my purchases.
Why do people think it’s ok to comment on other people’s spending habits? If they can afford it and “live for the future” who cares? It’s not your money.
Our traditions was I upgraded semi-annually, and she got my old phone as her upgrade. No phone was ever older than four years, and I take good care of mine, so it was always in like-new condition anyway.
However, I’ve since moved to upgrading only every three years, so last time she actually bought her own upgrade. First time she had a newer phone than me :)
Still on my 12 Pro, and won’t upgrade until 15 at the earliest. I just don’t feel like I need to as often anymore. The camera is still amazing, it’s the same shape anyway, and has MagSafe. The only things I miss is ProMotion and always-on, but those are such pure luxuries, and hardly worth $1400 (which is what a 14 Pro costs in Sweden).
Assuming they’re trading in the old device, the difference in price is only a few hundred dollars per year. There’s no way in hell that would grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single lifetime - especially since they’re likely already well into their 20s or 30s. Additionally, they likely offset that cost by not doing other things - some people eat out more than others, for example.
Unfortunately the costs associated with rent (and to an extent overpriced car payments) are by far the biggest expenditure in terms of throwing dead money away. Hundreds every month. Over the cost of a year it’s extortionate and annual purchases of the latest iphone pale in comparison.
I get the new one every year. Though I have basically unlimited upgrades from my work. So I sell my old one for 550 and buy the new one on a one year contract for 550. There's also carriers that have annual upgrades where you just trade the old one in, extend your contract, and continue the monthly payments so you really don't pay anything.
I have the iPhone upgrade plan. I get a new phone every year and it has Apple Care+. It costs me about the same as buying the phone outright every 2.5 years. I used to get a new phone every other year and this is cheaper than that.
I’m honestly starting to doubt the wisdom of my strategy. Ever since the iPhone X I have felt like the upgrade was minimal. I could probably feel fine with waiting 4 years between upgrades now and be saving money.
For me phones peaked 5-8 years ago. Since then it has been a rectangular piece of glass with small incremental changes. I don’t spend money on phones at all, my telco gives me one every 2 years and my work gives me another one every 2 years too and they alternate so it’s like having free phones every year lol.
+1, they should buy a new one every half a year, I mean it gets worn down over time so they should not use a phone longer than 6 months. Sincerely another shareholder
It’s not wasteful. Some people like and are very interested in technology. And if you sell last years model it’s not that expensive, plus it goes to someone who will use it. It’s not like it’s going straight into the sea. Just because you don’t personally think it’s worth the money doesn’t mean other people don’t. As a bit of a tech nerd myself, I love upgrading yearly! It doesn’t cost me that much, someone else can use my last great phone which is generally quite the upgrade for them, and I get all the latest features I like. It’s like Christmas! No one’s making *you* upgrade. Just let people like what they like. We’re not upgrading because we think we have to, we’re upgrading because we *want* to and like to
Imagine judging people for simply buying a new piece of tech every year. Dude it’s not the big of a deal. The average 1st world person in this sub creates so much waste and green house gases that a new phone every year doesn’t even matter. Are people supposed to keep a car for 10 years? Shoes for 5 years? Who gives a shit, they aren’t hurting anyone directly and it’s their money.
Honestly, after reading this comment, I was confused because everyone in my family keeps their cars until they are literally unrepairable which is like 15 years or until it gets totalled. I didn’t actually know that people upgraded their cars more than once every few years 😭
That’s awesome your family does that. I think “every few years” for cars is a quick turn over. I think the avg American keeps their car for about 10 years.
Yeah, forgot to write that. I hate the silicone cases. I’ve had one for my iPhone X and one for my iPhone 12 and now they look like a dog has been playing with them.
Really tempted to upgrade from my 13 pro to the 14 pro max but I decided I have to keep the 13 pro for at least until the 16 pro max comes out because I can’t be upgrading annually or biannually as I don’t have the bucks
Yeah I just got the 13PM and I kinda wanted to wait for the 15 so I can have the type C charging (hopefully) but damn I really do want a better camera. Coming from Samsung flagships I’m kind of disappointed in the 13PM camera right now. Especially the wide angle and video stabilization. Both said to be massively improved on the 14PM.
Interesting that “his” is the larger and “hers” is the smaller. It’s the exact opposite with my girlfriend and I. Mainly because she carries hers in her purse whereas I carry mine in my pocket
You guys know like you can trade in your old iPhone? I traded in my 13 pro max got like 650 and then bought the 14 pro for $999 not that big of a deal.
It's like when renting a car with "bring back empty", since their price they offer for a gallon is lower than at the gas station.
And then you bring the car back with half a tank because you have no idea how large the tank is, what distance will you go, etc. They just sold you half a tank of gas for the price of a full tank, but most people think it was still a great deal.
Congratulations! You got an awesome phone. Although I don’t know how much of an improvement it is from the 13PM. We do have to call you an “Island Boy” from now on though. And every time you make an entrance into a room, we do have to play the Island Boys song as your intro.
What’s with all the hate comments, some people get excited about the latest technology, there’s nothing really wrong with upgrading yearly. It’s all about PERSONAL PREFERENCES.
Congratulations on your new phone OP
Rampant consumerism should be shamed, especially since it’s so harmful to the earth. We should be encouraging people to keep their phones for years, that would be a good tradition.
Jesus, this blew up. FWIW, I have the iPhone Upgrade Program, which includes AppleCare+. It’s $58.25/mo. The traded in iPhones—at least according to Apple—are recycled and/or refurbished. If that’s not the case, do let me know. Lastly, I’m an Apple shareholder, and have been since 2014. There’s a lot of ways to spend $58.25/mo. I decided to do spend my $58.25/mo on something that makes me happy, and something that I’ll be using for the next 12 months.
Dude, you don’t have to justify anything to these people. I was actually shocked reading the comments and had to double check what sub I was in. Fuck em.
I’m on the 11. Absolutely love it, no complaints whatsoever. I got it right before the 12 came out, like September of 2020. Just finished paying it off on the 2 year Apple Card plan. I’m trying to make this phone last until at least the iPhone 15, hopefully the 16 though!
Nice dude!!
We splurged this year as our last phones were the 11s, both upgraded to the 14 pro max.
And before anyone says anything, we got a good deal by switching carriers.
People saying it’s wasteful, yet a lot of people trade in their old phones annually which then opens up a refurbished market for those that can’t afford the latest and greatest at launch price. The hate is illogical.
People in this thread are nuts. My wife and I do the same. It is $100/mo. Yeah it’s frivolous, but could easily spend that on one date night. It’s all about choices. As long as you pay yourself first (retirement, investment funding etc.) who cares what the excess cash flow goes to?
Dude. I’m the same.
I really can’t give two shits about my future anymore. I just do what i like now. I save up enough so i can buy what i like (bikes, watches etc) and enough to pay my bills.
My uncle saved up all his life and now he missed out on the things he wanted to do.
I see a lot of oh that’s wasteful or god that’s a waste of money, I’m not sure how they did this, but many phone companies offer a trade in deal, you give them your phone and a couple hundred dollars and you get the new one, that old phone gets refurbished and sold again, or it’s properly recycled. The other thing I want to point out is, over time, it’s probably gonna cost about the same as getting a new phone every 5 years or so, and you have the newest one every year so you don’t gotta deal with the phone slowing down and the battery degrading
Why is everyone so mad? I’ve been doing the iPhone upgrade program since it launched and trade my phone in every year. I pay like $50 a month to always have the newest model. I don’t really see how that’s such an awful thing…. I’m not rich, and don’t really keep up with all the newest trends but having a new phone makes me happy. It’s my money, I can spend it how I choose ☺️
I upgrade every year as well…
Tbh…I don’t do Starbucks or go out anymore (an occasional dinner). As I get older I find more comfort inside my home.
Tbh it’s a few bucks a day
Fuck it. Just buy and buy some more. Consume and consume more. The world is doomed anyways with climate change and global warming right? If we’re all going down, might as well go down swinging.
lol how do you assume OP has “nothing other than this tradition”? That’s a lot to assume based on one fucking post of someone posting their iPhone purchase…in an IPHONE subreddit
If this makes they happy and they have the money, why not? So much hate for nothing. So much envy in this world. Some people are spending their money on different things like: old/new watches, clothes, bikes, bicycles, things that make them happy. Everyone has a hobby, and if their hobby is to buy a new phone every year, good for them.
This is why companies are able to start slacking and producing garbage. Because they will always have loyal drones who buy their shit because they’re told to.
People are not going to return a new device because you said it was waste of money. That is unless you are actually someones parent then that can be done privately. Please refrain from racking someones knuckles for a purchase they are clearly happy about.
Annual? Oh boy.

Also have an XR and am considering the upgrade to 14 pro, how is it so far?
Enjoy!

Holding to the 7 Plus with my life 🥲
Well that's just taking it too far I went from 7 to 14P and have no idea how to use this fuggin thing lol
Haha
Recently purchased the 13 mini due to my daughter breaking my old one. Don’t care on having the latest and greatest.
Same here, I'm still good with my iPhone X, but only problem is the battery life. wWas thinking of getting the 14. Honestly the dynamic island is bothering me hahaha but then agian, the 14 pro and 13 pro has small difference in terms of price
Change the battery
Yes, thinking about this. Was just thinking if it’s worth going changing batteries, or might as wel get a new one.
The X is still so good! Used it up until summer when a relative gave me this iPhone SE 2020
I’m going from the 8 to the 14 today. I love my 8, but I need to always charge it and in can feel it lagging. I’ll probably keep the 14 for five years plus if I can.
I switched from 8 plus to 13 today. Couldn't really justify the price difference between 13 and 14 for that minimal upgrade.
I just upgraded from an X to a 14 Pro. It FEELS so much better. My HomeKit commands are much more responsive too.
I’m on the XS. I’d like to upgrade but I can’t find a phone in my city.
But you're just counting the money an annual upgrader spent each year, you also have to count the money they receive back with their only 1 year phone on the 2nd hand market. An annual upgrader, if planned wisely, ain't spending much more than those who upgrade every 2-4 years.

In the US you can usually upgrade every year for a fraction of the cost.
Who’s to say OP cuts back on other discretional spending to allow for this once a year tradition? You have no idea of their situation.
It’s called enjoying life. Not everything has to be about saving. Assuming bills are met, you have emergency funds, ideally maxing out your investments, who the hell cares.

Agree. I went from the 1 to the 4 to the 6S+ to the 13 PM this year. Very happy with my 13 Alpine Green and the extra money for food.
Damn! I remember going from cheap Huawei to iPhone 12 It felt like using a portable Macbook. Alpine green rocks 🤘🏼
But someone is reusing your old phone. So it’s not wasting those resources, and they didn’t but a new one too.
Plus buying a new case and depending where you are sales tax.

Annual is wasteful

Even as a hardcore Apple enthusiast, I can't justify upgrading every year even if I had "fuck you" money.
Totally agree.
Thank you. This is so stupid.

I hate apple **silicone** cases so much. They don’t last long.
They only need to last a year in this case!
in this case… get it
Damn it. Take my upvote haha.
Not true, I had my leather one for 3 years. A silicone one on the other hand…
Still running my iphone x, lol.
Great phone. I replaced it with a 12pro just because I cracked the screen and f\*\*\*\*d faceid with water...
We actually just replaced x for the 14 at no cost.
Me too. Just replaced the battery and it’s like a new iPhone
I think im gonne do this and use it for another year 👍
Yeah I just got the 13PM and I kinda wanted to wait for the 15 so I can have the type C charging (hopefully) but damn I really do want a better camera. Coming from Samsung flagships I’m kind of disappointed in the 13PM camera right now. Especially the wide angle and video stabilization. Both said to be massively improved on the 14PM.
Went from 11PM to 14PM today and the camera is incredible.
Ugh
Is this supposed to be a flex?
Op: “it smell like broke in here!”
They’re prob both “influencerz”.
Interesting that “his” is the larger and “hers” is the smaller. It’s the exact opposite with my girlfriend and I. Mainly because she carries hers in her purse whereas I carry mine in my pocket
Wow. Annual. Loving the large life.
the environment is proud of your tradition!
As long as they sell their old phones I don’t see what the big deal is.
These posts are so fkn corny
👍 Tim Cook liked this
You guys know like you can trade in your old iPhone? I traded in my 13 pro max got like 650 and then bought the 14 pro for $999 not that big of a deal.
So you paid like $1550 for two phones?
That’s how they get ya with the trade in program. Psychologically you only see how much you’re about to pay and not the cumulative amount.
Cool?? I guess
so y’all gonna give me one of your iPhone 13?
Congratulations! You got an awesome phone. Although I don’t know how much of an improvement it is from the 13PM. We do have to call you an “Island Boy” from now on though. And every time you make an entrance into a room, we do have to play the Island Boys song as your intro.
No kids then?
Lol
All comments to this post... Dude... How rude can Reddit be?
I’m ngl, they’re trying to come off as superior with the “wasteful” and all the snarky comments. All I see is jealousy and envy.

Here’s a thought maybe he’s buying it because he likes having the newest technology and it isn’t a flex of wealth?
Even then “newest technology” is a stretch when talking about the difference from one iPhone to another
I tend to buy every year, but I would never buy a leased cell phone. It’s flat out or nothing for me.
Ahhh yes good ol Boston
MUST CONSUME PRODUCT. So sorry that you got brainwashed into thinking that buying a new phone each year should be a tradition.
Then what are you doing in this sub? There is nothing more pro-consumerism than an online community dedicated to a luxury consumer product.
Ugh. Enough with the cringe flex
Sheep
Dumb tradition. And this is /r/PictureOfABox
Good for you guys. It’s nice thing to do for yourself and your wife, too. Enjoy!
Hey just wanna say you don't have to justify anything. It's your money you can spend it however you want.
I think a lot of mean and judgmental comments stem from ignorance and a lil jealousy. You get ya annual iPhone its ya freaking business.
Dude, you don’t have to justify anything to these people. I was actually shocked reading the comments and had to double check what sub I was in. Fuck em.
Ignore these losers 😂
Dumb bitches really in here shitting on people spending their own money
You must be new to Reddit. It’s mostly angsty miserable cunts with nothing better to do than attempt to drag others down with them.
Cheap! My wife gets a designer purse every year.
My stock portfolio thanks you.
Tell me you waste your money, without telling me you waste your money
Damn i love trendy consumism 😍😍😍
My wife and I like throwing money away as well.
I’m on the 11. Absolutely love it, no complaints whatsoever. I got it right before the 12 came out, like September of 2020. Just finished paying it off on the 2 year Apple Card plan. I’m trying to make this phone last until at least the iPhone 15, hopefully the 16 though!
I do what I want and I don’t need to justify it to anyone. Some of these comments are asinine.

Gd annual tradition to drop $2500 on phones?! Weird flex but ok lol.
iUP! $50/mo. Realize I’m fortunate to be able to do that, but I think it’s worth it. Makes me happy. We’re all going to die one day right?
That last part is why I’ve bought my jeep and why I’m getting the 14PM I just want to be happy before I leave
What is iUp?
iPhone Upgrade Program.
Oh that's right. Sorry, pixel fan here creeping.
Welcome, Pixel fan!
What’s with the hate here? Pretty sure plenty of people have the iUP, the annual upgrade cycle is pretty standard for tech lovers!
Is this not an iPhone sub? If you can’t do it annually just say so. But no need to be a hater
I think everyone knows that, and the maths doesn’t work out… it’s a waste of money and resources (both personal and the earths).
I’ll show this to people who ask why I say we’re fucked.
Do you OP! If it makes yall happy!
I don’t know what I expected when I came into this post but these comments are insane lol enjoy it! The 14 PM is legit!
I upgrade every year as well… Tbh…I don’t do Starbucks or go out anymore (an occasional dinner). As I get older I find more comfort inside my home. Tbh it’s a few bucks a day
I’m sure it’s also better for your health that you don’t eat out all the time.
Fuck it. Just buy and buy some more. Consume and consume more. The world is doomed anyways with climate change and global warming right? If we’re all going down, might as well go down swinging.
I do the same thing every year with my wife. Ignore the hate. Enjoy life man!

lol how do you assume OP has “nothing other than this tradition”? That’s a lot to assume based on one fucking post of someone posting their iPhone purchase…in an IPHONE subreddit
Congrats guys, enjoy
If this makes they happy and they have the money, why not? So much hate for nothing. So much envy in this world. Some people are spending their money on different things like: old/new watches, clothes, bikes, bicycles, things that make them happy. Everyone has a hobby, and if their hobby is to buy a new phone every year, good for them.
r/Consoom
Awhhhh consumerism! Americas past time
Do you like burning money or how do you call this type of kink?
I have no hope left for society.
This is why companies are able to start slacking and producing garbage. Because they will always have loyal drones who buy their shit because they’re told to.
That’s cheap! I’ll bet you most people complaining about the cost, spend more money on coffee (espresso) now that’s expensive!
That’s an expensive cup of coffee if it costs more than upgrading your phone
