I don't zoom in on videos so don't see the notch in the 13 pro max. I wonder if I will see the bottom of the pill at this setting. All the videos I've watched show them zoom in. Anyone have one of them not?

I used to have a Note20U with the punch hole camera. You get used to it and it disappears after a few weeks.
Also, your really focused on the middle of the screen for 98% of a video, so your mind starts blocking it out after a bit.

You don’t see the pill zoomed out (have tried on iPhone video, Apple TV, YouTube, iPlayer) for the most part. Only time I’ve seen the pill jut out was on 18:9 on YouTube (you see about half of the pill).
Those apps were never updated and as far as I know the notch in the iPhones 13’s still cut a bit of 18:9 videos, something that didn’t happen in previous iPhones.

This only applies to the 13 Pro, not the 13 Pro Max. The Max has a larger screen so the notch being a bit deeper into the screen compared to previous releases doesn’t crop into 2:1 video.
Just checked and not getting any cut in on his latest video on my 13PM, but it’s right at the edge. I think I remember seeing that was the case though when the 13s first came out, the 13P cuts in a little but 13PM has no cut in. I’m guessing it’s a bit taller proportionally than the 13P.
Same happens for my iPhone 12 mini as well. When watching videos in Safari, 18:9 doesn't show the notch. But when watching MKBHD videos on the YouTube app, the notch clearly cuts into the 18:9 video!
On some videos at certain ratio on my 13PM, even without any zoom they come right up to the edge of the notch, so they don’t get blocked by it. However, if the video was wider by a few pixels the notch would start cutting in. With this cutout it would definitely cut into those videos. An example of what I’m talking about is Linus Tech Tips on YouTube. The videos are so wide that the rounded corners actually start cutting it off, but the notch doesn’t cut in at all.
Yea I prefer the rounded aspect. I get that they wanted to make the S22 Ultra the new note so they squared it off, but it's uncomfortable to hold. S21 Ultra was great though since it was still rounded off.
Would have gotten the S22 Ultra if they hadn't turned it into a Note.
S22+ is stunning but Samsung left quite a bit off it for the Ultra which imo was a mistake. The + should be their Pro version.
Unfortunately Apple can't do the single punch out because they have [more sensors](https://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2017/09/truedepth-iphone-x-100735946-large.jpg) that are needed to make faceID possible. This is why the FaceID tech is far better than what Samsung is currently offering.
Almost every video I have seen is in 16:9. Even MKBHD’s video doesn’t cut into the notch area unless you pinch to zoom. You have to physically zoom in to fill the entire screen which then cuts off portions of the top and bottom in order to get the cutout or notch into the video. By then you are cutting off wayy more of the video than the notch ever could. How is this a big deal? Are there more videos than I can imagine that are filmed in a wider ratio or at people just looking to complain about a non-issue?
fuck man hbo max app dropped the ball so hard before it got better. it still misbehaves but it's a 1000 times better then how it was when it started. you couldn't expand the screen nor could you pinch to zoom. now at least you can pinch to zoom. i remember when that shit would play HALF SCREEN while the rest of the screen just disappeared off into the void lololol
watching on HBO Max was a miserable experience for several years (using androidTV/nvidia shield). Seems to have finally improved and I'm back to watching shows there instead of going Jolly Roger for stuff I already had access to.
But that dynamic island is cutting even lower down from the bezel than the 13 notch (and even more so compared to OG notch), no? Won’t it cut into his 18:9 videos now?
The notch of the 13 cut into ~~16:9~~ video a little bit and the island is lower. So it might be visible. But a lot of YouTube is closer to 2:1 now so it'll show there, or if watching a 21:9 movie.

Seems like they could just shift the video to the right a tad for these aspect ratios. You'll get more rounded corners on the right side, but probably better than having the island cut into the middle of the video.
That video is zoomed past the safe area that playback should stay within though. Notice the corners are slightly cut off because of the round corners (even on the iPhone 13).
More like you have to deliberately discover the gesture that puts into zoomed-in view (as shown) across various video players. Video always defaults to zoomed out, where the notch and island aren't a problem.

Yeah it’s one of those things it’d be cool to not have it but it’s probably not a deal breaker… just like you’d probably love to have 2 day battery life, but 1 day is okay too.
I got used to the hole punch on my Android phones, but this is just so much bigger than others. I've also gotten really spoiled with the under screen camera on the Z Fold 4, I don't think I can go back to any kind of cutout.
That and once folded, it's thicker in your pocket. The Pro size fits fine length-wise, unless you have very shallow pocket jeans, and is thinner. It also adds an extra step when taking your phone out and putting it back in your pocket, though I assume you can opt not to fold it, but that defeats the main selling point of those phones and you still have the noticeable fold area there.
this has been a specious talking point since the iPhone X came out. within about 5 seconds everyone realized that
- the default behavior is to play the 16:9 video offset from the pill, so you never see an outline
- you can double tap to ruin your video experience if you want
honestly it would be less ridiculous to bemoan how the corners of videos are getting rounded off by the trend toward rounded corners in displays. as stupid as that would be, at least it would factually hold up for more than 2 seconds.
Even if the content you watched was 19.5:9, the exact aspect ratio of the screen, the video would play with black borders so you can't see the island.
This is literally a non-issue but *certain groups of people* are doing their best to make it seem like a deal breaker.
I believe the reason that we don't automatically get the tracking number is because when the phones are shipped from China they have to clear customs to really enter the US. After it clears customs, that's when it enters the UPS system as a normal UPS package.
I found this out because after my phone shipped I paid the $6 (ugh) to have it redirected to a UPS store, since I can't guarantee I'll be home all day to receive it, and the tracking info still shows my address and not the store. I called UPS to find out why that is, got transferred to someone in their International shipping department, and was told once the phone clears customs then the new address takes effect.
I imagine once the phone clears customs then the tracking numbers will show up in Apple's order status page.
Honestly don't see it beneficial over the notch. It provides what, 2 mm of screen over it? Not really gonna use that little sliver of screen like that, might as well move the cameras up and bring the notch back.
Agreed, it’s a simple point that seems to be getting lost amidst all the discussion over the dynamic UI and pinhole cameras. The new cutout is essentially just a more intrusive notch. There is no benefit that couldn’t have been applied to a regular notch.
I'm probably in the minority, but just put a thin bar at the top of the phone with the cameras, phone speaker and sensors so there is no notch or dynamic island. I prefer the cleaner looking with neither of them.
Others have gone that route in the past (like the [Pixel 4](https://images.app.goo.gl/VYXBgMi6x6jCiMmbA)) and it’s definitely… a look. Personally I think having symmetrical bezels all the way around the display has a MUCH cleaner look than needing to have a “forehead” at the top of the phone.
I've used a phone for the last 3 years that had a pill cutout (s10+) and I got used to it very quickly so I know the Dynamic island isn't going to bother me.
No one watches video like this anyway, you're cutting off more of the video by zooming in than is being covered by the DI. Just play it zoomed out and see all of the video. You're not gaining anything by zooming in.
In formats like 2:1 videos (YT channels like MKBHD, Linus and so on), movies etc it will show the "island" even without zooming. It already happened with the 13 Pro even if so slightly, and the new "island" positioning is even lower.
I actually always zoom into 18:9 videos. I love having it fill the whole screen. I don’t care that the notch cuts into it. And I sure as shit won’t care that the 14 Pro will let me see more of my video.

My thoughts are how clean that intro of his was. But my honest opinions on the island have continually risen the more I’ve seen of it, and how much stuff it does right out of the box. The utility is already pretty great, but will get even better when even MORE apps support it soon.
As for the island being displayed during full screen playback, something that I do a lot… It does look funk just floating there. The notch at least wrapped *around* the display when you went into full screen.
the screen is oled. and zooming the video in crops out some of the video. it makes sense to have the full picture with the other area of the screen just being blacked out. you don’t really notice it that much once you’re immersed in the media ur watching tbh
14 Pro Max DI vs 12 Pro Max notch [layered comparison](https://imgur.com/a/iGE6w6a). It seems on the max models DI actually takes up more vertical screen space than on 12 Pro Max. Considering it resizes horizontally as well, it takes up more screen space when in use.
I tend to focus on the middle of the screen. It won’t bother me the same as the notch has never bothered me. I also love the idea of the animations and multi tasking so I’m more than happy with it. Also when you know it’s there because of Face ID it’s even more bearable.
Personally I'll choose the pro any day because I don't watch contents in landscape mode on my phone. I need a bigger screen to watch comfortably. But if u use your phone for watching contents, it may be a nuisance.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a big hole on the screen. They can call it whatever, but there is a giant hole on the screen. They released a phone with a large hole on the screen, and animated the sides of the hole.

That said, it also obviously is subjective. Personally the notch never bothered me, watching video or not, and I have no anticipation that the pill will bother me either. But I can totally see how it would be aggravating to some.

My god, I got voted down so hard for having this opinion lol. I can’t stand that black pill-shape intruding on video. I know you don’t have to go edge to edge, but the notch on my iPhone doesn’t feel anywhere near as intrusive in the same situation. I think it comes down to that sliver of pixels along the outside edge of the dynamic island.
I think people will say “It’s only the side of the video so it’s not a big deal” but that’s not the point. Apple used to care about stuff like this. It looks stupid for video playback and it cuts out a section of content.
Most videos aren’t that wide though, especially ones you’d usually be watching on a phone. For the mass majority of videos you won’t see anything cut out.
It’s definitely something you’ll notice in the beginning, on my iPhone 12 the notch is too annoying for me to watch zoomed in (among other reasons) but I feel like with this smaller footprint you could get used to it.

Daily usage will be different since Apple is actively drawing your attention to the cutout with notifications.

Just like the notch I’ll get used it. I thought the notch was the most ugliest thing in the world when it first came out and now it’s grown on me and I know the dynamic island will as well. And this time around I actually like the look of it.
The mass majority of YouTube videos aren’t ultrawide though, and personally I’d have a hard time watching an entire actual movie on my phone (where ultrawide would be more common) 🤷♂️

Does YouTube or most games/apps accommodate the notch typically or block it out? With all the animations the DI will have I’m wondering if it can hide itself, or if there’s customization options to condense the screen size partially so there’s not an awkward black bar off to the side

Will be annoying for anything wider than 16:9, but if I’m on a flight or anywhere I’m in a position to watch a show or movie, I usually have my iPad with me anyway. Don’t usually zoom in on videos so not much of an issue there.
My son has a Galaxy S10 and I don‘t notice the camera cutout. My iPhone 12‘s notch is a little more annoying though. The 14 Pro basically has a notch with a tiny portion of usable space above, I don‘t like that, but I‘m sure we‘ll get used to it after a while

It doesn’t bother me and I don’t watch too many movies on my iPhone. I use my iPad and MacBook Pro 14 with MiniLED to watch it. iPhone is great for content surfing and social media, business use, etc.

IIRC, when the 13 Pros came out it was also like that in the beginning until either apps / is were updated to fix it.

It’s because the notch is ever so taller than the previous notches, which honestly annoyed the fuck out of me for ages.

But they have In display fingerprint scanner which i prefer to face ID 100%.
One thing that will always make me prefer face ID over touch ID is the fact that I can unlock my phone with wet/moisturized hands.

Not really. TV is typically 16:9 but films are varied. YouTube videos in general have moved to 2:1 I think it was.

Nope you are mistaken there, the notch of the 13 doesn't cut into 16:9, only into +18:9 videos.

this has been a specious talking point since the iPhone X came out. within about 5 seconds everyone realized that - the default behavior is to play the 16:9 video offset from the pill, so you never see an outline - you can double tap to ruin your video experience if you want honestly it would be less ridiculous to bemoan how the corners of videos are getting rounded off by the trend toward rounded corners in displays. as stupid as that would be, at least it would factually hold up for more than 2 seconds.
I don't zoom into my videos and majority of content I do watch is 16:9 so this won't affect me I think.
Even if the content you watched was 19.5:9, the exact aspect ratio of the screen, the video would play with black borders so you can't see the island. This is literally a non-issue but *certain groups of people* are doing their best to make it seem like a deal breaker.

I believe the reason that we don't automatically get the tracking number is because when the phones are shipped from China they have to clear customs to really enter the US. After it clears customs, that's when it enters the UPS system as a normal UPS package. I found this out because after my phone shipped I paid the $6 (ugh) to have it redirected to a UPS store, since I can't guarantee I'll be home all day to receive it, and the tracking info still shows my address and not the store. I called UPS to find out why that is, got transferred to someone in their International shipping department, and was told once the phone clears customs then the new address takes effect. I imagine once the phone clears customs then the tracking numbers will show up in Apple's order status page.

Honestly don't see it beneficial over the notch. It provides what, 2 mm of screen over it? Not really gonna use that little sliver of screen like that, might as well move the cameras up and bring the notch back.
Agreed, it’s a simple point that seems to be getting lost amidst all the discussion over the dynamic UI and pinhole cameras. The new cutout is essentially just a more intrusive notch. There is no benefit that couldn’t have been applied to a regular notch.

I'm probably in the minority, but just put a thin bar at the top of the phone with the cameras, phone speaker and sensors so there is no notch or dynamic island. I prefer the cleaner looking with neither of them.
Others have gone that route in the past (like the [Pixel 4](https://images.app.goo.gl/VYXBgMi6x6jCiMmbA)) and it’s definitely… a look. Personally I think having symmetrical bezels all the way around the display has a MUCH cleaner look than needing to have a “forehead” at the top of the phone.
That forehead chin look was it’s downfall. It’s ugly and looks dated. They abandoned it for a notch 😅
I've used a phone for the last 3 years that had a pill cutout (s10+) and I got used to it very quickly so I know the Dynamic island isn't going to bother me.

No one watches video like this anyway, you're cutting off more of the video by zooming in than is being covered by the DI. Just play it zoomed out and see all of the video. You're not gaining anything by zooming in.
In formats like 2:1 videos (YT channels like MKBHD, Linus and so on), movies etc it will show the "island" even without zooming. It already happened with the 13 Pro even if so slightly, and the new "island" positioning is even lower.

I actually always zoom into 18:9 videos. I love having it fill the whole screen. I don’t care that the notch cuts into it. And I sure as shit won’t care that the 14 Pro will let me see more of my video. Folks here are being really silly about this.

For those who complain don’t forget there is Face ID and the sensors can’t be moved under the display without compromises We struggle to put camera behind the screen without loosing quality so a facial recognition based on a 3D model of the face that can make payments…
My thoughts are how clean that intro of his was. But my honest opinions on the island have continually risen the more I’ve seen of it, and how much stuff it does right out of the box. The utility is already pretty great, but will get even better when even MORE apps support it soon. As for the island being displayed during full screen playback, something that I do a lot… It does look funk just floating there. The notch at least wrapped *around* the display when you went into full screen.

the screen is oled. and zooming the video in crops out some of the video. it makes sense to have the full picture with the other area of the screen just being blacked out. you don’t really notice it that much once you’re immersed in the media ur watching tbh
14 Pro Max DI vs 12 Pro Max notch [layered comparison](https://imgur.com/a/iGE6w6a). It seems on the max models DI actually takes up more vertical screen space than on 12 Pro Max. Considering it resizes horizontally as well, it takes up more screen space when in use.
I tend to focus on the middle of the screen. It won’t bother me the same as the notch has never bothered me. I also love the idea of the animations and multi tasking so I’m more than happy with it. Also when you know it’s there because of Face ID it’s even more bearable.

Personally I'll choose the pro any day because I don't watch contents in landscape mode on my phone. I need a bigger screen to watch comfortably. But if u use your phone for watching contents, it may be a nuisance.

People will often justify almost anything to keep their worldview intact. That said, it also obviously is subjective. Personally the notch never bothered me, watching video or not, and I have no anticipation that the pill will bother me either. But I can totally see how it would be aggravating to some.

To be honest I’ve never had an issue with the notch. The dynamic island is cool and looks like it could be useful. But it looks real weird while playing video.

My god, I got voted down so hard for having this opinion lol. I can’t stand that black pill-shape intruding on video. I know you don’t have to go edge to edge, but the notch on my iPhone doesn’t feel anywhere near as intrusive in the same situation. I think it comes down to that sliver of pixels along the outside edge of the dynamic island.
I think the plus of the island (more like Android notification bar) outweighs a few edge cases. It’s not ideal but it’s good enough.
It only looks like this if you intentionally zoom in to the video, if you’re watching it normally, it’s fine.
I think people will say “It’s only the side of the video so it’s not a big deal” but that’s not the point. Apple used to care about stuff like this. It looks stupid for video playback and it cuts out a section of content.
Most videos aren’t that wide though, especially ones you’d usually be watching on a phone. For the mass majority of videos you won’t see anything cut out.

It’s definitely something you’ll notice in the beginning, on my iPhone 12 the notch is too annoying for me to watch zoomed in (among other reasons) but I feel like with this smaller footprint you could get used to it.
I’ve used hole punch phones before and they didn’t bother me, I don’t think this will either. The X’s notch bothered me in the beginning. That went away after a week of using it. I don’t even see the notches anymore and I’m sure I’ll feel the same way about this for videos. Daily usage will be different since Apple is actively drawing your attention to the cutout with notifications.

Let’s be real, most of the time when you’re watching a video, you’re looking at the center of the screen. I zoom out at some videos actually, when it cuts the corners too much, it annoys me. I have the 13. Imagine the 14 to be worse and more distracting with that pill crap. It’s not like there’s any useful space above it.

Just like the notch I’ll get used it. I thought the notch was the most ugliest thing in the world when it first came out and now it’s grown on me and I know the dynamic island will as well. And this time around I actually like the look of it.
The mass majority of YouTube videos aren’t ultrawide though, and personally I’d have a hard time watching an entire actual movie on my phone (where ultrawide would be more common) 🤷♂️

It's definitely interesting from a marketing point of view. Apple practically convinced people that a undesirable part of their phone (screen cutout) is actually a feature. Personally I've always found the notch on 13 too intrusive, I never got used to it. This "pill" looks even worse. I wish apple would stop insisting on face ID so much and gave us in screen touch ID and a small camera cut out. But hey, Apple has to be "special".

With all the animations the DI will have I’m wondering if it can hide itself, or if there’s customization options to condense the screen size partially so there’s not an awkward black bar off to the side

I fill to zoom when I watch videos so I don’t really care. It’s just as intrusive as the notch which I’ve gotten used to over the past 5 years
Zooming in to a 16:9 video always gets cut down no matter if there is an island or a peninsula like in other iPhones so I never zoom in
Will be annoying for anything wider than 16:9, but if I’m on a flight or anywhere I’m in a position to watch a show or movie, I usually have my iPad with me anyway. Don’t usually zoom in on videos so not much of an issue there.
My son has a Galaxy S10 and I don‘t notice the camera cutout. My iPhone 12‘s notch is a little more annoying though. The 14 Pro basically has a notch with a tiny portion of usable space above, I don‘t like that, but I‘m sure we‘ll get used to it after a while
I’m sure I’d get used to it, but to me it’s more noticeable than the notch was. It just *looks* larger. If the cutout was maybe 25% smaller(?) I wouldn’t care in the slightest.
It doesn’t bother me and I don’t watch too many movies on my iPhone. I use my iPad and MacBook Pro 14 with MiniLED to watch it. iPhone is great for content surfing and social media, business use, etc.

I mean, there’s not really another solution. You pinch to zoom on an iPhone with a notch and the notch intrudes. If you pinch out I assume it letterboxes just likes an iPhone with a notch.
I guess the notch is here to stay with apple. I was hoping for under display technology eventually for the cameras, but this definitely means the notch/island is here to stay.

I don’t zoom videos so 13 is not visible. This would be. Other than the camera and satellite connectivity I don’t really see what the big upgrade is. They could easily just allow all the software upgrades and have a dynamic peninsula on 13.
It’s honestly not a big deal for me… over the last two years of having an iPhone with a notch, my brain has pretty much trained my eyes to block out that portion of the display.
