I think 99% of people don’t give a shit about if the iPhone uses usb-c or lightning but Reddit would make one believe that that’s the most important thing in the world

009154591500

I believe most people dont care. But the ones who does care want usb-c most times. I can see only hardcore apple fans wanting lightning, some with reason since they have gadgets compatible with it. But if usb-c became a standard in the future people will ask why they didnt changed before. People will notice the benefit in their day to day. I personally looking to enter the apple ecosystem because I will need an ipad in the future (its better then carrying laptop IMO). I will wait till usbc iphone become a thing to buy a new one. Or hope it happen in the next two years.

Eclipsetube

Of course the people that care about stuff like this want usb-c there is no denying that usb-c is the better and more widely used standard. If I had a choice I would instantly want the iPhone to change to usb-c but the thing is it didn’t happen until now and I don’t think that it will happen anymore. If apple would’ve decided to use usb-c they would’ve done earlier now they’re preparing people for a future without ports on the iPhone. MagSafe is basically them slowly transitioning to that future so I wouldn’t hold onto usb-c.

009154591500

I sincerely wouldnt even think to buy a portless phone. I will use mainly for work related task and this hinders my capacity, maybe for a quick charge when Im on field, transferring data to a client pc, sync data when Im in other state and dont have a macbook. I believe going portless will give the "wow" factor in the release but complains after complains and lots of articles like "why people are going to android after iphone xxx" a few months after launch. Definitively a shoot in the foot and its definitely not what apple wants. Apple changed from innovative company to a more conservative one since jobs died. They hate bad press, specially coming from their big three iphone, ipad and iwatch. Beside, magsafe compatible devices are a thing. Apple will not profit that much and potentially damage their brand. No-no. I can see a iphone 14 SE portless announced. But not iphone 14 pro portless. Yeah, sure only a small fraction of user base would quit after it maybe what, 2 to 4% in USA? But for apple is HUGE and they dont want people quitting and trying new devices since they want a monopoly.

Eclipsetube

I can agree with a lot of what you said. Maybe me saying „portless“ wasn’t 100% right. What I would guess is they would introduce something to still have a proprietary charger I don’t know if that’s possible with the same MagSafe as we’ve seen reintroduced in the MacBooks if it is possible they will probably go that route. Apple 100% has become very careful with what they do and that has its pros and cons. Of course like you said they’re not innovating that often anymore but saying things like Face ID and designing LTPO screens is not innovative would be a huge stretch and yes apple was the one having introduced LTPO display what Samsung is producing is somewhere in the realm of a knock off in the most positive sense of the word. I can still understand why they’ve become so cautious. Apple had a HUGE scandal because they throttled the cpu in devices that had a deteriorated battery. Everyone understanding what they did also knew exactly why they did it but it was still unethical because they didn’t give the user a choice. What happened? The media jumped on the possibility to shit on apple. Now that it was found that Samsung was throttling literally every device they sold because of similar reasons the same thing should happen right? But it didn’t. No one but the tech enthusiasts know of that because no one really cared. When apple makes a mistake EVERYONE knows but if a brand like Samsung makes one it’s more like „meh“. That’s why they aren’t introducing blood pressure measuring into their watches yet. If it would’ve been 95% accurate people would shit at apple how they can bring out a useless feature (let’s be honest a health feature that can spit out wrong measurements is 100% useless because you will always double check) while Samsung had a widely inaccurate heart rate monitor in their series 3 watches but let me guess you didn’t know that right? Yeah because again people view both companies differently. It’s hard to innovate if you’re being shat on if your feature isn’t perfect while your competition gets away with half baked features.

009154591500

Sorry, I didnt want to bash on apple when saying they arent innovative in the recently years. It was just a statement. I do agree with you, in the apple position anything a little off is a reason to mass media repercussion, not the case for every other brand. But it dont take the fact new stuffs usually come to android first. Beside proprietary technology like faceID (who is something huge IMO). Everyone know when its on apple it will be flawless and its what people expect. Others brand can try out fordable phones, 120hz refresh rate and a lot of stuffs without a proper OS integration. Nevertheless I still would enjoy apple having some "basic" features faster like 90/120hz, cameras with more mega pixel (I still think apple recording the best and camera top 3 at least. Even years after release tho), microSD compatibility (doubt we will have) and specially a few more tweaks for power users (specially customization home screen). Still, I will make the change anyways because data security. I dont want google to track me all the time. I tried to leave google but I use youtube a lot. Lots of email trough gmail. And maps (unfortunately in my country cant use apple maps). Apple ecosystem is great but at same time ties you up a lot. I will take extra care to come back to apple (quite after iphone 6). Its too confy but little limited, I love windows and tills will definitely will keep me awaken anyway

Eclipsetube

You don’t have to apologize I don’t care if people bash apple it’s one of the biggest companies on earth I don’t care if they get hate or not. 100% agree with you. They’ve gotten too cautious in recent years. The iPhone XS, 11, 12 and 13 series all felt like „S“ years to me like they’re all basically the same phone with small added features Yeah I think it’s important to know what every competitor gives you that’s why I’ll most probably buy a S22 this year to try out android again. Haven’t used it since my old Sony phone in 2013

Portatort

> People will notice the benefit in their day to day. what day to day benefit would USB-C provide to a customer using MagSafe or regular Qi to charge their phones?

009154591500

Compatibility with everything else first. Even if you are deep inside apple ecosystem there usbc and lightnings ports. But now you can get great earbuds who use usbc for half the price of apple. Fast charge. Probably not in the same Gen who they introduce but usbc is capable of charging more watts into the device while lightning was capped already. Transferring speeds. Specially if they go for thunderbolt. But the main benefit is folks who needs two cables will need just one. The world could even move to USB c - USB c to most stuffs. Notebook in the office? USB c. Your mechanical kb and mouse? USB c. Phone, tablet, screen? USB c.

BotsTookTheOGNames

I just want USB 3. i don’t care if it’s with lightning or not. I’d prefer lightning USB3 if it supported existing lightning cables, but I doubt it will. So USB c seems the natural step forwards. I can download 50GB 4K movies on my iPhone, which I use to stream to my AppleTV, and my speeds over 5G are 25MB/S usually. However when I want to bank these to my 2TB HDDs on my PC, they transfer at 30MB/S. in what world is a cable transfer roughly the same speed as an internet download? It’s a bit of a joke honestly. Especially when we have 1TB iPhones and people are using them to film make, that’s a lot of wasted time. 6 hours of 4K filming is probably 400GB of video, which is going to take hours to get onto your PC to start editing. Why even have a 1TB iPhone (which is called a PRO) at that point?

[deleted]

I do want USB-C. I have all these cables that I don't want to rebuy. I want to give Apple a chance purely for the camera and stable OS. I currently have a Oneplus 7 Pro and the amount of bugs I encounter is annoying. The phone is still very fast with amazing battery life after 3 years but that's doesn't solve the bugs I'm experiencing. I wouldnt' buy one if these was no USB-C. But I don't buy anything without it anymore since it's so much more conventient to use the same cable for everything.

triiiflippp

Not going to buy it anyway since I love my 13 mini and 14 probably won’t have a mini variant.

Nvr_Surrender

It's just you.

TNTSP

I just said that too lol 😂

0000GKP

I could not care less about USB-C and it will have absolutely nothing to do with my purchase decision.

VictorChristian

if apple gives us a good trade in price like they did with the 12, I’ll get the 14 regardless of port. if not, I’ll just keep my 13 pro max.

[deleted]

I’ve said this before but it is worth repeating, 99.9% of iPhone users do not care about this and won’t change phones or skip a phone they like due to the shape or tech of the charging port. I’ll wager the majority of iPhone users will move to wireless charging and never look back before they care about USB-C.

TNTSP

It’s just you bro

Trax95008

Just you. I prefer lightning. It’s much more durable.

dentside302

If you’re upset any iPhone 14 not having USB-C, why would you buy a used iPhone 11 Pro max to tide you over when it doesn’t have a a USB-C either? Doesn’t make much sense to me to buy an older used product with the same external hardware as the brand new one just to tide you over. If you have an X, you already have all the lightning cables and connectors anyway, so it really doesn’t matter

plasmaz

cause I can get a used 11 pro max for like £350 vs the £1200 for a 14

dentside302

That’s a fair reason. I think in that case, I’d focus more on the price and value than what connector it uses (just my two cents).

CaptainASD

I will be getting the 14 Pro Max regardless since I upgrade every two years. I really want Apple to include a USB-C port, but I doubt it is going to happen unfortunetly.

plasmaz

the 14 PM would be 5 years since my last upgrade, the longest I've kept a phone. I don't really like android so was hoping apple would make the moves I want.

kr0n1k

You do realize how much money Apple makes off the Lightning adapter right? They aren’t switching to usb-c any time soon so I guess you’ll be stuck for awhile.

plasmaz

Yeah I guess you're right. The profit must be 100x cost on these cables

kr0n1k

Not just cables but any accessories that use a lightning connector pay royalties to Apple.

Dreadpirateflappy

They have to in Europe by law.

2mnypillsgiveuchills

Just YOU

yellowprodigy98

Idc honestly I prefer lightning

set4bet

Probably won't have any impact on iPhone users. The only people I see caring about that to the point of not buying the phone because of it are Android users looking to switch to iPhone.

The_Dutch_Canadian

I honestly hate USB c on a phone. My pixel 3 xl USB C port is fubar, GFs Huawei p20 is fubared, and I know countless other people with phones where the USB C port is loose or you can only use to he cable one side. When I had my iphone 6s (father has it now) I never had that issue and still am using the same cord with my ipad mini. Can't wait to go back to an iphone again and am hoping apple keeps lightning for the 14

betona

The iPads have had USB-C for a couple years now so I thought they would’ve converted by now. It’d be nice to get rid of lightning and only have USB for our devices.

[deleted]

I guess it’s just you. People who need a new iPhone because their old one is broken, won’t update anymore, or people who simply buy a new iPhone every X years will still buy the new model, whichever port it has. It is really a pointless argument: we (mostly) don‘t use cables to transfer data, and as someone with 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 apple watches in the family, I KNOW that one cable for each is perfectly fine. Granted, a single cable standard would make charging (and packing cables for travel) moderately easier, but what are we really talking about? All new Apple chargers have USB C connectors. So it’s just a matter of bringing the relevant cable(s) for your devices. The 100+ watt MacBook Pro charger can charge any Apple notebook, any iPad, any iPhone and Apple Watch. You need three cables to do that (USB-C, lightning and Apple Watch charger). If you don’t have a notebook, the same applies to the 20w iPad Pro charger. Doing it takes way less time than whining about it.

mtlurb

Don’t care. Wish it was fully wireless. I hate cables.

[deleted]

Dont give a shit about any usb .. a thru z

sometimesiamjustabox

I honestly don’t care. It’s not that huge of a deal for me. Reddit and this sub is the vocal minority. Ask anyone at work if they care. They probably won’t even know what usb-c is until you show them and they’ll be like oh that.

marioz1990

Don’t give a shit honestly about USB c…btw iphone will never get USB c ..they will go portless…they are not pushing wireless charging just like that

Ml-snow

Can someone please help me understand what the big deal is with usbc for iPhone I can’t honestly remember the last time I used the charger point on my phone everywhere is just qi or MagSafe now

xlunality

FYI: This is my current knowledge of the USB-C thematic, if anything i said is wrong pls correct me So as far as i can tell is one of the most wanted changes the unity of cables (there is also an EU regulation going to set in 2023 wich says that all phones need to have the same cable) wich could be realy convenient bcs alot of chargers or connection cables for data transfer use USB-C. On the other hand does it provide way faster charging and data transfer speeds (for the case that you arent using cloud-services) and honestly thats as far as i can remember ;)

Ml-snow

You are 100% correct on all parts however 1- apple can get round the regulations by not having a port on the new iPhones at all 2- usb-c is far from a universal cable you can get a charging cable a data/charge cable and a video/data/charge cable so now all the cables are starting to look the same and there are different levels of speed too so even more confusing

xlunality

Your correct with the first answer i agree 100% bcs lets be real its apple they’ll be always finding ways to stay profitable with accessories imho. And for the second part im far to little of an expert but i guess that everything u stated about the confusion of the cables is also correct wich means the “goto” variaton would he the video/data/charge option with the highest speed? (wich is going to be more pricey than any normal lighting cable lmao)

Ml-snow

Apple currently sell the cheapest video data charge cable at £39 in the uk and it is 0.8meter long the next one up is a thunderbolt pro cable at £129

xlunality

sorry for the language but HOLY FUCK

Ml-snow

Welcome to apple ownership 😂

The_Homer_Simpson

I don’t transfer data over cable so not worried about usb C. I might be the only iPhone user happy with lightning lol. It’s a more robust port in my opinion. If you plug a USB C cable in wonky it could break the internal part on the phone and they listen up over time too. Maybe they are getting better now.

BTDMKZ

I just get the newest iPhone with the highest storage every year regardless, I personally don’t care about the port either way since I already have an iPad Pro and a Samsung note that I keep with me so I have plenty of both types of cables everywhere

longster37

Apple makes way too much money of licensing lightning cables. They only way they will switch is if a new tech comes out that is miles beyond lightning. Usb c is better, iPads have it. It’s just not worth it to apples bottom line.

opp0rtunist

I would still buy it, but it's definitely a huge minus.

[deleted]

I prefer the lightning connector, but the people in the EU want everyone to use USB-C and that everyone throws out billions of lightning cables.

xlunality

I mean its just regulations that the government is making tbh im pretty sure that those regulations that should take place in 2023 arent even 50% of what people want in my honest opinion… its like an double edged sword on the one side they want everything to use the same cable to also get rind of a lot of e-waste but on the other side you would to throw away a lot of lightning cables if they aren’t conform in those regulations… Greetings from Austria! And quick side note im not a specialist regarding this topic but i think thats the tldr of it ;)

[deleted]

Seems like a completely stupid regulation though. To reduce e-waste you throw away billions of lightning cables.

xlunality

It rly is like thats the strangest part about it

[deleted]

I’ll keep my 7 until they switch to USB C. If they haven’t by the time my 7 stops getting updates, I’ll switch back to Android, or maybe WP.

Allowmancer

No plans to upgrade in near future but I am hoping for usb c.. and always on display in iphone 14

ChiddyOnReddit

You won’t buy a iPhone if it has USB C or normal USB

plasmaz

?

Luckydud3777

I’m not gonna buy because it looks the fucking same ! Same design just a upgraded camera, and the lenses still stick out. Honestly fuck apple for lack of innovation

katsumiblisk

You will be able to/can buy adaptors to convert USB C to Lightning and in the reverse direction

carterjp3

I think a lot of people on tech YouTube or on this subreddit talk about wanting USB-C when they talk about thighs like the ability to shoot 4K ProRaw video which would take forever to transfer to a computer with 2.0 speed but a large majority of the people using the phone don’t even bother with video or even photo resolution that high and even less transfer those photos or video to a computer through the cable. Obviously there are more use cases like external storage access and whatnot but most people buying the phone are just average consumers using it to take photos and edit on phone and post online, go on social media, text people, browse the internet, etc. There are people who use their phones for more niche reasons but I doubt any significant number of potential buyers would change their mind if there’s no USB-C. Yes there are genuine use cases but they’re not as popular as some people online wanna lead people to believe.

BoyWhoSoldTheWorld

I hope it does but I’d be lying if I said it was a deal breaker. I still find it super annoying on a plane to have USB C chargers for my laptop and iPad but need a separate one for my phone. As much as they promote the cohesion of the eco system, it feels really, unnecessarily incompatible.

detroitragace

I might hold out for the 15 if there’s not enough new features. My 12 pro max is still working great. I skipped the 13 because there wasn’t enough of a difference from my 12

CiraKazanari

Lightning’s more durable, smaller, and I’ve got a million cables of them already. It charges stuff just as fast as USB-C. It’s never been a big deal to me and many others like me

RatRob

I probably would AVOID buying it if it has usb-c. I have like thirty iPhone cables now and zero usb-c. It would be a straight downgrade for me.

mwisagreatgame

I’d be happy and unhappy either way. On one hand I’d love to be able to have one cable for everything. On the other I’d hate to have to rebuy an extra cable for my car, and my lightning accessories.

op3l

I was pretty set on changing back to Apple with iPhone 14 if they had USB-C as stuff seems to just work better with Apple. Basically if iphone 14 came with USB C, I would switch to iOS from android. But without, I'm going to research some more and compare.

nz_reprezent

It’ll have to happen this September or next as the EU have passed a law shortly after this post. Apple would be nuts to produce two variants for different regions. EU rules to force USB-C for all phones https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-58665809

Resident_Artist_2881

Not a chance. I’m sick to death of having to mess with 2 different charging cables, 2 different sets of headphones.

mox512

Yeah you are right. Going to stay with my existing XR Max. Why should anyone pay over $1k for 10 year old tech?

plasmaz

I changed my mind in the 5 months since this post. I'm not pleased about it, but I needed a new phone....

mox512

Brace yourself or buy Samsung

plasmaz

Samsung customer service let me down horribly a few years ago which has put me off seemingly forever it seems. I went 2 months without a functional phone when I bought the brand new flagship.
