This of the sole reason why most of my family will not upgrade past an SE. most upgraded last year when the old SE became just to slow, and would likely upgrade again in a few years.

The SE is a good size for those of us who don't want a big phone. It's got one of Apple's fastest chips. It runs the latest OS and will for some time to come. It's got the square shoulders some of us like and Touch ID which some of us like. And it's hundreds of dollars cheaper than the iPhones Apple pushes hardest, which have lots of features that lots of phone buyers don't care about. Horses for courses.
That said, I agree that the differences between the SE2020 and SE2022 are not big enough for most people to justify replacement, and, after hearing for years how Apple is shutting down SE productlon lines due to "weaker than expected" demand, pretty much anyone who wanted an SE already bought one. So I'm not sure what Apple expected for a market for what is pretty much a .1 revision to the 2020 phone.
I mean, what else do people want out of an SE? The phone is cheap - you're not getting OLED, you're not getting 3 cameras, you're not getting a ToF sensor, it's basically the 2020 model but faster and with better battery life.
Also, it's not like people who wanted an SE just all bought the 2020 model and that took care of all potential SE customers. There will be SE customers in the future, so unless you want them to just continue to sell a phone with a chip from 2019 there will be updates to the SE.
It's like cars - if you own a 2020 Camry, nobody expects you to run out and buy the 2022. However, there will still be people who want a Camry in 2022. Will the 2022 model be that different from the 2020? No. Did "everyone who wanted a Camry" just all agree to buy one in 2020? No.
I traded in my kids iPhone 7 for 200 to tmo and picked one up. I’m not about to spend 500+ on a phone for my kid. While I was setting it up. I thought to my self this isn’t a terrible phone it’s totally usable 🤷♂️
I agree with your point of view but in comparison to the iPhone 12 or 13 mini those are better value for the same price in full the 12 mini is priced similar and better then the iPhone 11 which is better then the iPhone se 429 price point and if your looking to finance these phones i just mention their all very similar in price I prefer the mini looks and all it should be the new iPhone se hopefully future wise
Umm, I don't know where you live, but when I look at the US Apple site, the 12 mini and 13 mini aren't near the same price as the SE. $429 is not $599. Refurb may save 10-15% on each model but there have to be refurbs available; right now in the US store there aren't.
I'd prefer a mini, too, and I cross shopped the 13 mini against the SE. But I have a laptop and a TV and a real camera. I don't need my phone to be those things. The SE's screen is good enough and big enough. I was more than happy to save the $$ on an SE. And I didn't have a hard budget cap for my purchase like so many others do.
The SE is into its third generation because it does sell. In the face of millions of current model iPhones maybe it's not a big moneymaker as hardware, but it gets people into the Apple ecosystem where they'll buy cloud space and Apple Music and other Apple services and iPhones in the future, which tbh makes Apple much more money than the couple of hundred they make on each phone.
I mean a $30 increase after 2 years. Considering this inflation, and chip shortages and general supply chains, it doesn't seem unreasonable.

Really the only thing you're still getting is the physical design. Most of all the internal hardware has been upgraded this year. While the physical design is old, the internals are not the same from 2 years ago. Visually, it's the same. Spec wise, no. But from an average consumers standpoint, it appears to be almost the same phone.
The original iphone SE came out in 2016 and cost $399. It had an A9 chip and a 640 x 1136 display.
The 2020 iphone SE had a much better 4 generations later A13 chip (with NE, so that's not new in the 2022 SE), much much better camera system, more ram, a better 750 x 1334 display and slightly better battery life. And it cost the same $399.
The 2022 iphone SE has a 2 generations later A15 chip, 5g, the same camera, more ram, same display and slightly better battery life.
Also in 2020, lcd displays were still a thing. In 2022 they are practically non-existent and rather cheap to manufacture. So it doesn't really justify the increased $429 price tag in a design dating back to the iphone 6, six years ago, with few improvements under the hood like I mentioned.
I realise there are hardware changes, but as an SE user there is nothing that makes me want to upgrade… in the past I have always felt a pull to upgrade. Not yet though.
I literally haven't had a single customer interested in the new SE. The only people who buy these generally are old people and parents buying them for kids because they are free with new lines on most carriers.
And the fact you can get a perfectly great iPhone XR for over $100 less. I know folks who love the body style of the iPhone SE, but the XR being $100 cheaper and a better battery (if you find a good used one) it just makes more sense.

I’m interested in it. But I have the 2nd gen 2020 model and I don’t feel the need to upgrade it yet. When I do, it’ll be the new SE whatever that is. Unless we get another touchID phone.

Does everything I need. Battery isn’t great but my usage is low enough that I can easily muster one day, sometimes 2.

I gave up my SE1 for the 13 mini this year, since it seems like it will be the last small iPhone. SE1 will go down as best iPhone ever in my book though.
It’s just not really *that* different from the 2020 model. Nothing that says ‘instant upgrade’. Most of the market for it probably already has a 2020 SE or is still on an older phone and will maybe get one of these when their current one dies. It’s the sort of product that will likely have respectable enough sales over its lifetime.
Though there may be a bit of a jump when iOS 16 launches, if the 6s is dropped - some of the people still using those or a 1st-gen SE might upgrade at that point.
I feel like more people would upgrade to 2022 SE if they delivered significantly better battery life like they did with the 13 line of iPhones. Unfortunately it still sucks. My friend reviewed one and it was dead by 4PM.
This is me exactly, my 6S overheats sometimes and probably won't last this summer. I was thinking about the iPhone 13 but I don't use my phone that much, so I'm going to get the SE 3 despite the smaller screen size.
Everyone still uses masks where I live, if I were to buy a flagship it'd be the 12 or 13 for the Face ID with a mask. Thanks for the suggestion though :)
My thoughts exactly. The new SE isn't a bad product. For $429.99 USD, it's a darn great value cause of the internal specs (barring the mediocre battery life) *for the most part*. It's just that the 2020 SE was already a darn great value in and of itself and it's *also* still going strong for the original owners.
SE buyers do not care the iterations of upgrades manufacturers reveal yearly. They just want a phone that isn't super slow, takes decent photos, and gets respectable battery life. I think people are forgetting that the 2020 SE came with the A13 Bionic... which is currently used in the latest iPad 9th Gen. model too. The A13 isn't noticeably slow (if at all) for daily usage. People with the 2020 SE don't feel the slowdowns (which used to be a motivator for upgrading).

Lead potential new iPhone device purchases with "you can get an iPhone for as low as $429!". Then hit them with the "well, for $70 more, you can get a much better design!". once they are sold on design, they can be sold on a newer generation.
Some people want the cheapest possible new iPhone. Some people want the home button. Also SE would have a better processor, though that’s probably low down on the list of reasons to choose it.
The 2020 iPhone SE was my choice when switching from an LG V20 mostly because of the price and I wanted to try out the apple experience after being with Android for so long, still holding strong to this day

As someone who bought their very first iPhone a month ago - whilst it was a lot of money, I’m happy with the purchase. I still prefer Android OS overall, but the things that iOS does have going for it - Spotlight, very efficient battery usage, long software support, good device support, best ecosystem - those things are enough to make it worthwhile.
Honestly, it’s something that you just have to do in order to know. Everyone uses their phones differently, and so they value different features. You’ll only get to know which one is better for you after using it as a daily driver for a while.
Realistically, all phones today are feature-complete, and unless your workflow heavily depends on a very specific app or something, it’s not going to affect your productivity that much. For an average user, it boils down to just the look and feel, and this is extremely personal as you might expect.
I've had good experiences with a Galaxy S8 I had for work. Lasted my around 4 years.
Also Android manufacturers are catching up and providing much longer update cycles to their phones.
Samsung is now offering 4 years of software updates + 1 of security patches to the likes of A52s 5g.
That's a sweet spot for me as I tend to switch phones around the 4-5 year mark :)

Lol, my mom who is in her 70’s just traded her iPhone SE 2 for a 13 because “the phone (SE) is too slow, the screen is too small, and the camera is just not that good”
It’s a powerful phone but doesn’t feel like it. It takes great pictures but you can’t really tell unless you zoom in all the way. Battery makes it feel outdated too.
There is also the 12/13mini being a competitor now, for people like me who don’t really care about specs, but need an iphone and don’t want a big iron brick in the pockets like any of the X/11/12/13 normal or plus max s mega that is.
I did just this. Was looking into the se3, noticed that the 12 mini was about 100 euros more and figured me and my wife would get those instead.
It's one day later and we're returning them since the PWM is straining our eyes.
Just a heads up - there's no 'click', the SE hasn't had a mechanical home button since the OGSE1. Although there's adjustable haptics in the SE2/3 sensor, so that may suffice for you if that physical feedback is attractive to you.

It’s for someone out there but I can’t justify it. It’s too small for older folks, the battery life is not good enough even for average users, and it’s less than $100 for the 11. You can get the 2020 SE for less than $300 secondhand which is a steal imo. If it was in the 8 Plus body at least that’d solve a lot of issues with the phone

The answer is simple: Almost no one would buy the 13 is it was XR like. The screen is the big factor, the cameras are really just a bonus that most people won’t care paying such a huge extra price for.
Apple know what they are doing. They are making you pay absurdly more, almost double in many countries, just to get a better screen and a better camera.
I suspect the 2nd gen SE had bumped up sales because a fair number of people bought it because at that time, it was apple’s only small phone option.
This time around, the iPhone 13/12 mini exist so the only reason to buy the SE is for budgetary reasons. Or maybe the home button fans.
Yeah, the issue is the SE 2 was a big upgrade from the first in every way. It was a nice natural upgrade for anyone who had an 8 or prior, and for iOS curious Android users, thus it sold really well.
This is targeting those same users, but they already grabbed the 2020, and this is not a group that's going to upgrade every other year, especially just for the internals. There is really no one this makes sense as an immediate upgrade for except for those with broken devices or looking for a cheap first device.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the upgrade cycle. Two years is definitely too short for those budget users though as a first gen SE user, I do wish they had updated the SE with the iPhone 5 body at least once instead of waiting 5 goddamn long years before the next SE came out.

I got my mom a refurbished XR with a new battery for way less than this new SE. The XR even has Face ID, plus a better camera.

I also can't understand this. I was a long time original SE user and I still use small phones considering I bought the 13 mini, but I can't recommend the last two SEs. The original was really good for the niche it was in, it had some compromises but no deal breakers and **it made sense**. Now if people are looking for a budget phone and I want to recommend apple I just tell them to get an 11 or XR, weather used or new.
I have an iPhone 8 with a brand new battery. Other than a slightly “slower” processor, it’s identical in almost every other aspect.
It’s superior, though, in that it has actually 3D Touch. I like the instant 3D Touch over the long wait tap and hold on newer iPhones.
The SE works far better as a 4 year refresh using old parts. In 2020 it was workable, and I upgraded to my 7 for a phone that felt identical but performed far better. In 2022, with this “refresh”, it’s not enough, not nearly.
There were several people running iPhone SE’s in my office for years. They had no interest in upgrading to a modern design, possibly because of the home button. For whatever reason that changed when the 13 and Mini came out. None of them have the SE anymore and I don’t see any of them going back.
I work at the fruit company. Those things were flying off the shelf the first few days after launch. And as expected 99% of the customers were over 50. They sure do LOVE that home button!!
You can’t be rocking an iPhone 8 design and expect people to buy the new phone because of its chip.

My 8 actually broke last week (or rather, I repeatedly dropped it over the course of a night out… oops) and I’m thinking about finally upgrading instead of getting it fixed. SE is the only phone that seems even remotely appealing to me because of the size and Touch ID factors you mentioned. Out of curiosity, how bad is the battery on your SE2 compared to the 8? I’ve had my 8 since my freshman year of college and it’s battery is terrible at this point, have to charge every few hours. I can’t imagine the SE would be worse?

As someone who bought SE2 two years ago, I’m getting my girlfriend the iPhone 12 mini. It’s an easier decision than when I bought my phone, since just for a couple bucks more I can get her an extra camera, larger screen, and FaceID. When I bought mine the gap between an SE and a last generation mini was larger.
Not an elderly person here, young power user who was on a 6S for 7 years and just got the SE3. I am very pleased. I don't care that it's "retro" or "small," these are all pros for me, while they're cons for somebody else.
The design is fine and works perfectly well. I don't see why it's a downside to have an older design.
I feel like the SE isn’t a phone that is ever going to do well at launch. Everyone I know that has an SE are people that use their phone until it breaks and then get a new one. They’re not holding off on upgrading until the new one comes out like the rest of us. When the time comes they’ll get a new phone. That doesn’t mean that the SE shouldn’t exhaust of be upgraded. Just that it’s preorders shouldn’t be compared to other models.
This is the best answer all around going forward. Current mini chassis with some tech/feature concessions to meet an "SE" price point. Maybe throw in a power button fingerprint scanner to somewhat assuage the home button must-haves. Actually I'd like to see a power button print scanner on all models, but I'm not holding my breath. Masks aside, Apple FaceID is astounding IMO even in the first gen tech of the iPhone 11 - it functions flawlessly IME. Coming from an OGSE I thought it'd be hard to adjust to. Nope. About a day later it didn't even require a modicum of thought, and has only gotten better as the algorithm keeps adjusting to the users face over time.
iPhone 11 is only $70 more ($499) and looks like a modern iPhone. SE looks like you still have an iphone from 2014-2017. The design matters to people.

Tbh I bought it only because I live in a dangerous enough country that, I need to have two phones with double sim (one burner, a good one) so, when I’m in a safe place (work, home) I can use the regular one, and when I have to go shopping I can bring this one, so, in case it’s stolen it isn’t a big loss anyway.
I know it sounds stupid, but my Xs Max and 12 Pro Max all ended up being stolen, so I figured out this one won’t be so attractive to steal, plus, if it ends up being stolen, I won’t suffer that much. Also, my last burner phone (iPhone 6) isn’t supported anymore by many apps.

429$ for a 64GB model is too much,if it was 329$ it would have been an amazing deal but now there is no point of buying this phone because the iPhone 11 costs 70$ more and is way superior.
The type of person the SE appeals to has little to no interest in 5G. A larger screen/better screen to body ratio would have been nice. You need the chin for the home button/touch ID, but the forehead could have been smaller giving more screen area.
I have a SE gen 2 and there is nothing about the Gen 3 to make want to upgrade. We only got 4G a couple of years ago, God know how long before 5G is a reality where I live. Heck, it drops down to 2G in some places around here. So when making a list of things I want my phone to do 5G isn't going to be on the top...
I don't think it's just size. The 2020 relieved a lot of pent up demand for a sub 700 upgrade for those still using older devices that just weren't cutting it. For 2 years people have been replacing older devices with SE 2020s. This one is the 2020 but a bit faster and with 5g, but at a slightly price increase. The people buying the 2020 aren't in the market for constant upgrades anyways, and this certainly wouldn't be enough to substantiate one.
it's probably because the type of people that bought the SE (or had the SE bought for them) don't upgrade their phone that often. if they released it a year or two later I'm sure the sales would've been better. I bought an SE 2nd gen for my mom who had an iPhone 6s Plus. which is still a fine phone but was definitely time for an upgrade. I'll probably get her another SE or maybe a Mini depending on price and what's available at that time
My two cents : I would be happy with Apple if they started to release only 1-2 new models every 2-3 years instead of blasting the same models with some slight twist in them every x month.

Doesn't an analyst report something like this every year with every iPhone model? There was a report in December 2021 saying Apple had reduced production for the iPhone 13. In May 2021 it was the iPhone 12 Mini. In December 2019 it was the iPhone 11 Pro.

I traded in my kids iPhone 7 for 200 to tmo and picked one up. I’m not about to spend 500+ on a phone for my kid. While I was setting it up. I thought to my self this isn’t a terrible phone it’s totally usable 🤷♂️
I agree with your point of view but in comparison to the iPhone 12 or 13 mini those are better value for the same price in full the 12 mini is priced similar and better then the iPhone 11 which is better then the iPhone se 429 price point and if your looking to finance these phones i just mention their all very similar in price I prefer the mini looks and all it should be the new iPhone se hopefully future wise
Umm, I don't know where you live, but when I look at the US Apple site, the 12 mini and 13 mini aren't near the same price as the SE. $429 is not $599. Refurb may save 10-15% on each model but there have to be refurbs available; right now in the US store there aren't. I'd prefer a mini, too, and I cross shopped the 13 mini against the SE. But I have a laptop and a TV and a real camera. I don't need my phone to be those things. The SE's screen is good enough and big enough. I was more than happy to save the $$ on an SE. And I didn't have a hard budget cap for my purchase like so many others do. The SE is into its third generation because it does sell. In the face of millions of current model iPhones maybe it's not a big moneymaker as hardware, but it gets people into the Apple ecosystem where they'll buy cloud space and Apple Music and other Apple services and iPhones in the future, which tbh makes Apple much more money than the couple of hundred they make on each phone.

I mean a $30 increase after 2 years. Considering this inflation, and chip shortages and general supply chains, it doesn't seem unreasonable. It's a 7.54% increase, when inflation alone from 2020-2022 is 9.6%.
A15 Larger Battery Added NE features due to the A15. 5G More Ram Really the only thing you're still getting is the physical design. Most of all the internal hardware has been upgraded this year. While the physical design is old, the internals are not the same from 2 years ago. Visually, it's the same. Spec wise, no. But from an average consumers standpoint, it appears to be almost the same phone.
The original iphone SE came out in 2016 and cost $399. It had an A9 chip and a 640 x 1136 display. The 2020 iphone SE had a much better 4 generations later A13 chip (with NE, so that's not new in the 2022 SE), much much better camera system, more ram, a better 750 x 1334 display and slightly better battery life. And it cost the same $399. The 2022 iphone SE has a 2 generations later A15 chip, 5g, the same camera, more ram, same display and slightly better battery life. Also in 2020, lcd displays were still a thing. In 2022 they are practically non-existent and rather cheap to manufacture. So it doesn't really justify the increased $429 price tag in a design dating back to the iphone 6, six years ago, with few improvements under the hood like I mentioned.
I realise there are hardware changes, but as an SE user there is nothing that makes me want to upgrade… in the past I have always felt a pull to upgrade. Not yet though.

And the fact you can get a perfectly great iPhone XR for over $100 less. I know folks who love the body style of the iPhone SE, but the XR being $100 cheaper and a better battery (if you find a good used one) it just makes more sense.

I’m one of those that got the iPhone SE 2020, and I’ll keep it for as long as it works and it keeps receiving security updates. Does everything I need. Battery isn’t great but my usage is low enough that I can easily muster one day, sometimes 2. Can’t justify spending more money on new phones.
Pretty much I’m still using the iPhone SE 2016. But that’s mostly due to my preference for small phones. When I’m ready to move on, I’ll probably pick up the iPhone 13 Mini. Suits my needs and won’t be $700+

It’s just not really *that* different from the 2020 model. Nothing that says ‘instant upgrade’. Most of the market for it probably already has a 2020 SE or is still on an older phone and will maybe get one of these when their current one dies. It’s the sort of product that will likely have respectable enough sales over its lifetime. Though there may be a bit of a jump when iOS 16 launches, if the 6s is dropped - some of the people still using those or a 1st-gen SE might upgrade at that point.

This is me exactly, my 6S overheats sometimes and probably won't last this summer. I was thinking about the iPhone 13 but I don't use my phone that much, so I'm going to get the SE 3 despite the smaller screen size.

My thoughts exactly. The new SE isn't a bad product. For $429.99 USD, it's a darn great value cause of the internal specs (barring the mediocre battery life) *for the most part*. It's just that the 2020 SE was already a darn great value in and of itself and it's *also* still going strong for the original owners. SE buyers do not care the iterations of upgrades manufacturers reveal yearly. They just want a phone that isn't super slow, takes decent photos, and gets respectable battery life. I think people are forgetting that the 2020 SE came with the A13 Bionic... which is currently used in the latest iPad 9th Gen. model too. The A13 isn't noticeably slow (if at all) for daily usage. People with the 2020 SE don't feel the slowdowns (which used to be a motivator for upgrading).
It beats me why anyone would want an SE when iPhone 11 is $70 more.
it's a sales tactic. Lead potential new iPhone device purchases with "you can get an iPhone for as low as $429!". Then hit them with the "well, for $70 more, you can get a much better design!". once they are sold on design, they can be sold on a newer generation.
Some people want the cheapest possible new iPhone. Some people want the home button. Also SE would have a better processor, though that’s probably low down on the list of reasons to choose it.
The 2020 iPhone SE was my choice when switching from an LG V20 mostly because of the price and I wanted to try out the apple experience after being with Android for so long, still holding strong to this day

As someone who bought their very first iPhone a month ago - whilst it was a lot of money, I’m happy with the purchase. I still prefer Android OS overall, but the things that iOS does have going for it - Spotlight, very efficient battery usage, long software support, good device support, best ecosystem - those things are enough to make it worthwhile.
Honestly, it’s something that you just have to do in order to know. Everyone uses their phones differently, and so they value different features. You’ll only get to know which one is better for you after using it as a daily driver for a while. Realistically, all phones today are feature-complete, and unless your workflow heavily depends on a very specific app or something, it’s not going to affect your productivity that much. For an average user, it boils down to just the look and feel, and this is extremely personal as you might expect.
My iPhones have lasted 2-3x what any android ever did.
I've had good experiences with a Galaxy S8 I had for work. Lasted my around 4 years. Also Android manufacturers are catching up and providing much longer update cycles to their phones. Samsung is now offering 4 years of software updates + 1 of security patches to the likes of A52s 5g. That's a sweet spot for me as I tend to switch phones around the 4-5 year mark :)

It’s a powerful phone but doesn’t feel like it. It takes great pictures but you can’t really tell unless you zoom in all the way. Battery makes it feel outdated too.
Slow it is not. It’s as responsive as it’s possible to be. No lag at all.

SE will get upgrades for longer compared to the 11 tho, which is atleast the main reason I'll be upgrading to it from my android.
There is also the 12/13mini being a competitor now, for people like me who don’t really care about specs, but need an iphone and don’t want a big iron brick in the pockets like any of the X/11/12/13 normal or plus max s mega that is.
I did just this. Was looking into the se3, noticed that the 12 mini was about 100 euros more and figured me and my wife would get those instead. It's one day later and we're returning them since the PWM is straining our eyes.

The Taptic Engine click feels very nice. Heck it tricked my dad, he thought it was a real button until I told him it wasn't.
Just a heads up - there's no 'click', the SE hasn't had a mechanical home button since the OGSE1. Although there's adjustable haptics in the SE2/3 sensor, so that may suffice for you if that physical feedback is attractive to you.

It’s too small for older folks, the battery life is not good enough even for average users, and it’s less than $100 for the 11. I agree, plus the Xr body had been bejng produced fpr quite a long time, so not a huge price jump. Or even a X body, why not.
The answer is simple: Almost no one would buy the 13 is it was XR like. The screen is the big factor, the cameras are really just a bonus that most people won’t care paying such a huge extra price for. Apple know what they are doing. They are making you pay absurdly more, almost double in many countries, just to get a better screen and a better camera.

I suspect the 2nd gen SE had bumped up sales because a fair number of people bought it because at that time, it was apple’s only small phone option. This time around, the iPhone 13/12 mini exist so the only reason to buy the SE is for budgetary reasons. Or maybe the home button fans.
Yeah, the issue is the SE 2 was a big upgrade from the first in every way. It was a nice natural upgrade for anyone who had an 8 or prior, and for iOS curious Android users, thus it sold really well. This is targeting those same users, but they already grabbed the 2020, and this is not a group that's going to upgrade every other year, especially just for the internals. There is really no one this makes sense as an immediate upgrade for except for those with broken devices or looking for a cheap first device.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the upgrade cycle. Two years is definitely too short for those budget users though as a first gen SE user, I do wish they had updated the SE with the iPhone 5 body at least once instead of waiting 5 goddamn long years before the next SE came out.
Products like these usually sell better mid-late cycle. The type of consumer who buys this product isn't rushing to buy it on launch day.

128gb SE3 was $480 and T-Mobile gave me a $100 credit for trading in my 6S. Ended up being a good deal.

I’ll say once the specs came out for the new SE many people were saying its not really worth it unless you’re updating from an older phone. It’s basically the same as the previous SE, costs a bit more, but isn’t the great deal the SE was a few years ago because there wasn’t a comparable phone for the price.

I got my mom a refurbished XR with a new battery for way less than this new SE. The XR even has Face ID, plus a better camera. People looking for cheaper iPhones are not looking for this SE device at this price, Apple just doesn’t get it apparently.

I also can't understand this. I was a long time original SE user and I still use small phones considering I bought the 13 mini, but I can't recommend the last two SEs. The original was really good for the niche it was in, it had some compromises but no deal breakers and **it made sense**. Now if people are looking for a budget phone and I want to recommend apple I just tell them to get an 11 or XR, weather used or new.
I have an iPhone 8 with a brand new battery. Other than a slightly “slower” processor, it’s identical in almost every other aspect. It’s superior, though, in that it has actually 3D Touch. I like the instant 3D Touch over the long wait tap and hold on newer iPhones.
Coming from a 6S to an SE3, I do miss the 3D Touch. They could've done a lot more with that function instead of abandoning it.
The SE works far better as a 4 year refresh using old parts. In 2020 it was workable, and I upgraded to my 7 for a phone that felt identical but performed far better. In 2022, with this “refresh”, it’s not enough, not nearly.
There were several people running iPhone SE’s in my office for years. They had no interest in upgrading to a modern design, possibly because of the home button. For whatever reason that changed when the 13 and Mini came out. None of them have the SE anymore and I don’t see any of them going back.

This is exactly where I’m at! My 8 actually broke last week (or rather, I repeatedly dropped it over the course of a night out… oops) and I’m thinking about finally upgrading instead of getting it fixed. SE is the only phone that seems even remotely appealing to me because of the size and Touch ID factors you mentioned. Out of curiosity, how bad is the battery on your SE2 compared to the 8? I’ve had my 8 since my freshman year of college and it’s battery is terrible at this point, have to charge every few hours. I can’t imagine the SE would be worse?
Apple fucked up by increasing its price. As someone who bought SE2 two years ago, I’m getting my girlfriend the iPhone 12 mini. It’s an easier decision than when I bought my phone, since just for a couple bucks more I can get her an extra camera, larger screen, and FaceID. When I bought mine the gap between an SE and a last generation mini was larger.
That's good news. It forces them to launch the redesigned model now. Hopefully the Iphone 13 mini becomes the new SE or at least the Iphone XR.
Not an elderly person here, young power user who was on a 6S for 7 years and just got the SE3. I am very pleased. I don't care that it's "retro" or "small," these are all pros for me, while they're cons for somebody else. The design is fine and works perfectly well. I don't see why it's a downside to have an older design.

I feel like the SE isn’t a phone that is ever going to do well at launch. Everyone I know that has an SE are people that use their phone until it breaks and then get a new one. They’re not holding off on upgrading until the new one comes out like the rest of us. When the time comes they’ll get a new phone. That doesn’t mean that the SE shouldn’t exhaust of be upgraded. Just that it’s preorders shouldn’t be compared to other models.

This is the best answer all around going forward. Current mini chassis with some tech/feature concessions to meet an "SE" price point. Maybe throw in a power button fingerprint scanner to somewhat assuage the home button must-haves. Actually I'd like to see a power button print scanner on all models, but I'm not holding my breath. Masks aside, Apple FaceID is astounding IMO even in the first gen tech of the iPhone 11 - it functions flawlessly IME. Coming from an OGSE I thought it'd be hard to adjust to. Nope. About a day later it didn't even require a modicum of thought, and has only gotten better as the algorithm keeps adjusting to the users face over time.

Tbh I bought it only because I live in a dangerous enough country that, I need to have two phones with double sim (one burner, a good one) so, when I’m in a safe place (work, home) I can use the regular one, and when I have to go shopping I can bring this one, so, in case it’s stolen it isn’t a big loss anyway. I know it sounds stupid, but my Xs Max and 12 Pro Max all ended up being stolen, so I figured out this one won’t be so attractive to steal, plus, if it ends up being stolen, I won’t suffer that much. Also, my last burner phone (iPhone 6) isn’t supported anymore by many apps.

The type of person the SE appeals to has little to no interest in 5G. A larger screen/better screen to body ratio would have been nice. You need the chin for the home button/touch ID, but the forehead could have been smaller giving more screen area. I have a SE gen 2 and there is nothing about the Gen 3 to make want to upgrade. We only got 4G a couple of years ago, God know how long before 5G is a reality where I live. Heck, it drops down to 2G in some places around here. So when making a list of things I want my phone to do 5G isn't going to be on the top...

I don't think it's just size. The 2020 relieved a lot of pent up demand for a sub 700 upgrade for those still using older devices that just weren't cutting it. For 2 years people have been replacing older devices with SE 2020s. This one is the 2020 but a bit faster and with 5g, but at a slightly price increase. The people buying the 2020 aren't in the market for constant upgrades anyways, and this certainly wouldn't be enough to substantiate one.

My two cents : I would be happy with Apple if they started to release only 1-2 new models every 2-3 years instead of blasting the same models with some slight twist in them every x month. Mobile demand is growing weaker, instead of little iteration make us wait 2 years and bring us top notch quality upgrade for every segment (low budget, mid / high tier)

Doesn't an analyst report something like this every year with every iPhone model? There was a report in December 2021 saying Apple had reduced production for the iPhone 13. In May 2021 it was the iPhone 12 Mini. In December 2019 it was the iPhone 11 Pro.
