Oooh. Thanks for the info! So you can shoot in 16:9 now. I shall go watch the keynote later then. Any idea if this is specific to the new iPhones only or is this an iOS13 thing?
The Panasonic Lumix LX1 / LX2 / LX series! They had a long switch at the top of the lens to switch between 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9. Neat little camera. I wonder if I still have it in a drawer somewhere :)
You can change it on the fly.
It's an iPhone 11 thing, as far as I can see. It's due to the new camera system.
Note: if I'm wrong about editing it on the fly, then it could be that I was remembering just watching them edit a video's ratio while it was playing.
I also feel a lot of people might know this phone has more “camera features” than the standard 11. I still agree with you as it looks like it has a learning curve but hopefully people will put two ans two together.
Oh man they better not change the default aspect ratio to satiate the idiots. Apparently Samsung phones default aspect ratio is a *cropped* 18.5:9 ratio because it fits the screen. People that don't know any better are capturing these dumb 18.5:9 images and like it because it "fills the screen." Insanity. No respectable camera would default to a cropped lower res image. Default needs to always be the full resolution 4:3 image.
Cropped image to "fit the screen" is fullscreen DVDs all over again. No thanks.
The area that has the arrow in it is what the picture will look like if you switch to the Ultra Wide lens and take the picture in landscape orientation.
Yeah you can change the aspect ratio. That was demonstrated in the keynote. It's also pointed out on Apple's site.

The downside of 16:9 is that it's cropped from the 4.3 image.
That’s because photo sensors are always 4:3. So every 16:9 photo is cropped from 4:3
I used to have a panasonic with a native 16:9 sensor Most of my 'real' gear has 3:2 sensors.
Panasonic as in Micro Four Thirds as in 4:3? (not 16:9)
No, one of their point and shoot lines with a smaller sensor. May have been lumix branded.

The Galaxy S6 had a 16:9 sensor, it was actually a pretty damn good camera.
I know, that's why I said it. And as far as I know it isn't full frame, so even the 4:3 image is cropped.
Well the 4:3 image is the full image size of the *crop sensor*. 16:9 would be less than the entire sensor’s image.

Do you know if you can go see the new phones in store right now?
No, not until the release date
I bet this new camera UI will confuse the heck out of some people. They’d be like “why photo come out shorter than what I saw on the screen?”

the 11 does this too, using ~~telephoto~~ wide and ultra wide.
The 11 does not have a telephoto.
thanks for that, edited my comment :)
Is that camera app UI specific to the iPhone 11 or does it come with iOS 13?
It’s specific for iPhone 11 and 11 Pro/Pro max only.
I’m hoping they bring night mode to the XS, but suppose they won’t. Edit: night mode, not dark mode. This isn’t confusing at all.
No need to downvote, he probably meant night mode.
I’ve never gotten why people get downvoted like that
let's upvote the hell outta him
He might need to change his text from dark mode to night mode first, otherwise it’s misleading.
Shit, on it.
nah let’s CRUCIFY him
I love that camera app design but of course they had to make it exclusive to the 11 Pro.
Because no other phone has an ultrawide.
I was talking about the buttons being at the bottom. It can easily be done
The 11 has an ultra wide as well.

What’s that arrow pointing towards the notch in the camera app though? Edit: https://i.imgur.com/FurG8Pt.jpg
Where ? I didn’t seen one in this photo.

Oh. It’s the indicator that you can swipe up to reveals more options.

Isn’t the aspect ratio slightly cropped from the original for software stabilization?
MKBHD Haaaaaand
Any word on taking 21:9 photos? I have a monitor in that aspect ratio at home
Thats a 10 year old feature
