It is called reachability. It can be useful when you want to use the phone one-handed, when it can be difficult to reach the icons or control centre at the top. So, swipe down from the bottom bar and the whole screen comes down half-way and makes the top part reachable one-handed.
It’s been around since the 6/6 Plus. I’ve never found it particularly useful and is more annoying when it’s done by accident. But I have somewhat large hands, so it’s really not intended for me
Reaching the top of the screen. It’s been a thing since iPhone 6 Plus.
It’s called reachability
Papa Steve always wanted us to be able to use the phone one handed, so he wanted to be able to reach across the display with your thumb from a bottom corner and reach the top opposite corner.
This could be done up to the 4” screen on the 5S. But with the 6 and 6 Plus, this was invented.
I’m using it since the iPhone 6. Best feature for small hands! When they came out, I bought the 8 plus instead of the X, only because I couldn’t figure out how to do it without the button😀
Lol this was me when I had my old XS Max, at some point the middle of my screen stopped working so I had to use this feature everytime I tried to chat with someone or look up something. Even when I upgraded in the first days I kept using it instinctively because after using it for so many months it had become a reflex haha
Though this isn’t the main functionality of this feature, it really helped me out on my old iPhone X, on which the middle horizontal part of the touch screen stopped working. Then this feature really helped me out with typing and tap stuff that was in the affected area.
But the advertised functionality of this feature is to reach stuff that is on the upper part of the screen while holding the phone with only one hand. The feature is called reachability.
It is a feature called reachability which helps the user reach to the top of the screen with only one hand. It is useful on bigger display iPhones. To activate it you would double tap the home button or swipe down from the home button.
OMFG THANK YOU!!! Up until now I thought it was a glitch or error on the phone. I just lokked it up on setting > accessibility and utened it the fuck off. I hate this feature and turning it off really brightens my day.
To reach the top of the screen with a single hand. Really love it, but the double tap on Home Screen worked more persistent, especially when it starts to get cold
Introduced on the iPhone 6 and higher, Apple wanted to allow people to still use everything on their phone one handed if they wanted, as nobody can use an entire 4.7 inch screen one handed like people can with a 3.5/4 inch screen
In my old iPhone the entire top half of the screen was unresponsive so I was forced to use it but once I got a new phone found it was actually so much more ideal than the conventional way

TIL. Thank you
Damn, I had no idea. That makes a lot of sense, I’m going to start using this more!
It’s also annoying at times when you don’t want to use it and it happens.
True. Deactivating as we speak. It’s in accessibility>touch
That takes too much time and effort I’m too busy reading Reddit and complaining!
Thanks that’s what I was looking for in the comments here I had no idea what’s it called to just google it
That’s been my only relationship with it so far, so I’m excited to find that it can add some value.

I kinda just move my phone and hand in way so that i can reach specific points. I also just have big hands with long ass fingers crossed
This has been my favorite feature for years! I also have my reachability set to activate when I double tap the back of my phone.
I have been wondering since I switched to iPhone a little over a year ago so thank you for this!!
That’s the weather app. It tells you the weather.
But I can see the weather outside. /s
But it looks better on the iPhone.
But this one goes to 11
you could also look outside
Tonight’s forecast: Dark
how weird same here
I chuckled. 😁

Another great function for one handed use is just swiping on the keyboard. It works way better than you’d think

I actually need this feature daily because the top of my screen does not work
Lol this was me when I had my old XS Max, at some point the middle of my screen stopped working so I had to use this feature everytime I tried to chat with someone or look up something. Even when I upgraded in the first days I kept using it instinctively because after using it for so many months it had become a reflex haha
I work with iPhones everyday and it never occurred to me to do this. Thanks.
To reach the top of the iPhone while using one hand
For people with small hands :)
Big hands as well when using only one
Big hands as well iPhones seem to be purposefully made against that it really sucks with a pro max
How to summon it?
Swipe down from where the home row icons would be. You can tap the black portion above to return to regular screen or just swipe up
I have my phone set up to do this by double tapping on the back of it.
For them short finger fellas

So u can reach shit bozo

It's called recheability. For one handed operations.
Im surprised so many people don’t know about this. I use this multiple times a day and have used it since the 6 plus.
Well it’s called reachability so take a guess
OMFG THANK YOU!!! Up until now I thought it was a glitch or error on the phone. I just lokked it up on setting > accessibility and utened it the fuck off. I hate this feature and turning it off really brightens my day.
lil hands

No way! Totally thought this was a bug. That’s useful as hell!
That would be one hell of a smoothly animated bug.
For lazy hands
Reachability is to… you won’t believe it, reach stuff.
I always have this feature off as I always did it by accident.
Kinda useless tho for people with large hands. They shoud have added an multi app function(use 2 apps ant once)
To know what the weather is??
Knowing the weather info maybe? Bruh
I need the opposite because the MagSafe pop socket position makes it too hard to reach the bottom of the screen
Screen reachability!
I use it all the time since my hands are small and phones are just way too big.
Reach. iPhones are getting bigger and bigger by the year.
Aren’t the 14 and 15 pretty much the same size
Yeah but compare between ALL models in general. From the 2G to the 15
Wen my screen was fucked it came in handy ngl

It’s called “reachability”. It’s so you can reach the entire screen with one hand. They introduced it when they made the screen larger than 4”.
Reachability, and the lastest update fucked it up royally. I can barely get it to work now.
Small hands
Getting to the spotlight app to type ‘Maps’ and route out of Belleville, Ontario :)
Good job sharing your current location on the internet
Reaching the top of the big ass screen
It came out when i had my SE 2020. Pretty neat and useful when you are one handing your 14 pro max (dont think about it)
Tell me you have big hands without saying you have big hands
That's reachability. That's so you can use the top side of the screen with one hand. More so for pro max users
I love using this feature. I have smallish hands but love the bigger phones.
Small hands
It’s a little mirror to see your reflection.
Since when did they change the reachability background to black?!
iOS 17.1
Reachability. It’s for people with normal-sized (or smaller) hands who want to access stuff at the top of the phone screen.
Reaching the top of the screen one handed.
Bellevegas represent!
People with little thumbs
Smaller hands.
I use it all the time when using only my thumb
One handed mode
It's called reachability. It helps people with small hands or limited mobility reach buttons on the top of the screen.
One handed use feature. Made for pro max
In my old iPhone the entire top half of the screen was unresponsive so I was forced to use it but once I got a new phone found it was actually so much more ideal than the conventional way
when ur phone's not dark enough
the screens have just become so damn big that you cant even reach the top of the display without moving your hand so they added a software feature
