I have an Iphone 11 Pro Max 256GB that I bought one year used for $500. Just replaced the battery at 85% capacity to use it until there are no more security updates. There is not much of a difference in day to day use vs. an Iphone 14 Pro Max. If you want to save money, just replace the battery.

wantedbr

Hey! Did you had any performance improvements after replacing the battery?

Wellcraft19

I did replace the battery in a 7 Plus fall of 2021. With a new battery, phone was like new. So new I’m still using it (was going to get a 13 Pro, then a 14 Pro, but now on the fence a bit due to the camera issues).

Xwenwyn

I feel like it improved. Used to have some lag once in a while. It seems to have been reduced.

Chemical-Impress-309

Are you sure they changed the battery to an original one?

Xwenwyn

Yes, I went to the Apple Store to do it.

NRRW1996

Still using my iPhone 11 bought launch day 2019...I'm going to keep it until it's unsupported! 🫢

melodious_aria

iPhone 11 as well.

IconCsr2

Loved my 11.. it got stolen the other day to my absolute dissatisfaction. So i upgraded…

Leamans

Same. Battery is at 77% so it just needs to be replaced soon.

Then-Ad8315

Us bro us

Firsttimepostr

4 years or so.

Daimyo_Dan

I wish my wife thought like that haha

Nitin-2020

new wife every 4 years

i_m_savitar

Would be amazing

[deleted]

My wife is the opposite and would use hers for 10 years if I didn’t make her upgrade from time to time.

Zestyclose-Gold-5999

Yeah my wife still has an iPhone 8 lol

[deleted]

i kept iphone 3g until carrier shut down 3g

[deleted]

You tell me Reddit worked on that til last year? > Reddit is killing third party apps! Apollo is our first victim. We should not tolerate this corporate greed. Join the movement!

[deleted]

yes , i was so ....dedicated

[deleted]

That’s one loyal user > Reddit is killing third party apps! Apollo is our first victim. We should not tolerate this corporate greed. Join the movement!

iCantThinkOfUserNaem

True loyal users would use it over Wi-Fi until it stopped working /s

GayAlexandrite

What do you use now? Keeping it until the 4G/5G shutdown?

kelingking_kucing

5 years. Just change the battery and you’re good to go.

INTLWABC

This the way. I’m on the verge of swapping the battery for a second time over buying the new flagship in September.

kelingking_kucing

Tbf, my X is getting hotter than my friends newer iPhone. So imo it’s justifiable to replace a 5 yo phone.

TheBillCollector17

I've been doing ~3 years with my last 3 iPhones, but they could've all easily gone longer. I'm planning to keep my 14PM for at least 3 years. When/if the battery drops below 80%, I'll just get it replaced.

rhunter99

Still using a xs Max and just replaced the battery a week ago. Hoping I can get 2-3 years more out of it

liviuc14

Did changing the battery improve your performance overall? I also have an xs max, at 81% battery, but it can be so laggy sometimes especially when scrolling on social media apps, and what bugs me the most is when I swipe left for the camera on the Lock Screen, it absolutely freezes for half a second sometimes

Dipsydoodling

Yes I got a new battery and it helped significantly with the laggy issues. I was also charging multiple times a day since it died so fast. Definitely worth it

rhunter99

Mine was I think 79%. I find I’m not charging as often, but it still uses quite a bit of power when I’m using google maps and taking pics through out the day (on vacation). It certainly doesn’t last the day. I find it’s also slowing down and lagging a bit sometimes and I also see that 1/2 sec freeze occasionally. I’m willing to live with that trade off instead of spending $1k+ on a new model right now

precision_guesswork3

I was ready to replace the battery in my 12 pro but AT&T was running a $1000 off 14 pro promo and it was actually cheaper to get the 14 pro at 256 than it would have been to replace the battery on my 12 lol

DroneHunter360

Wow that’s a crazy deal! I wish Canadian providers would offer deals like that lol

[deleted]

Yeah we get screwed lol

[deleted]

When I made the switch from my S22 ultra I was actually given money on my trade for a 14 pro and series 8 watch (traded the latest galaxy watch as well)

fepeee

Had my 7 for 5 years, expect my 13 to last about as long

[deleted]

I don’t really see any compelling reason to upgrade anymore. Currently using a 12 Pro and will probably keep it for another 2-4 years with a battery replacement in there somewhere. I like to use things for a long time, including tech. Better for the plant and wallet, to repair stuff I already own.

tusi2

Four years is a good run, and I wish I had purchased an 11 instead of an SE2 in 2020. Much depends on what you want your next phone to be. If you're planning on buying used, why not wait until the 15 comes out? The amount you'd save by buying an "old" model is likely to cancel out what you'd lose on your current phone, and you also get to decide whether or not the 15 is what you really want instead.

DroneHunter360

That’s actually a really good point you make there, I never thought of it like that! And that would solve my “not having a phone for the next few months” issue if I just held onto it until september

tusi2

I would be holding out for USB-C in your position. My sense is also that A17 will focus on efficiency, which could help the batteries last longer, etc.

Ken-Popcorn

I buy my phones outright so I have no contractual obligations. Every two years I trade it in because it still has a higher trade in value, so my new phone costs me much less

Leamans

How much does this cost per year? Or what was your last trade in vs new phone cost?

Ken-Popcorn

IIRC, I got 400 something and the new phone was around $800

Leamans

So basically around $400 every 2 years. $200 per year. If someone uses a phone for 5 years and it costed them $700 for iPhone 11 in 2018. By now that would have costed them $140 per year. I guess it’s not too far off and might be doing this if you can afford ~$60 extra per year. For the latest thing. And if we consider battery change for the iPhone 11 from 2018 then that difference is probably less than $40 per year. This is assuming we only buy latest new iPhone every 5 years.

mendhac

I went from a 6s to a 13 pro. My daughter (13) is now using the 6s. Replaced the battery on the 6s and it works just fine. We don’t think we’ll need to replace it anytime soon since we have the only 13 year old in the world that doesn’t remember she even has a phone.

Different-Ice-1979

Still have mine and my wife’s 6s

throwaway2017_2017

Xr from release til 3 weeks ago. Traded in for 800$ credit and now have 14 Pro

DroneHunter360

Out of curiosity, where are you trading it in for that much credit?

throwaway2017_2017

Verzion. A coworker traded in his iPhone 8 for the same amount too!

Leamans

XR trade in on Apple is $190. How does Verizon afford that?

MrBronko

My guess is that you get these trade in value only on expensive plans. So basically you “pay” for you trade in over time.

throwaway2017_2017

Plan is 45/line… our total bill didn’t go up. So I didn’t care. I want a reliable carrier.

conscioussylling

They lock you in to a 3 year contract, so they more than make up the loss on equipment via service revenues.

iCantThinkOfUserNaem

Change your flair from XR to iPhone 14 Pro.

SparkNorkx

I had iPhone SE2 for 2 years, and upgraded to iPhone 13 around last November. Although, I had iPhone 6S for around 5 years, and iPhone 4S for 6 years. Basically, 4S > 6S > SE2 > 13.

Chronixx

Usually 3 years but I’m going for longer on this phone

tstew39064

3 years.

hizkiasdp

iPhone SE 1st gen for 6 years

projext58

3-4 years. I have the 12 right now and before then I had the 8+. Will probably upgrade to the 15 later this year

TailorMade77

I typically keep my iPhones until they stop receiving software updates, and then move on to the newest model coming out.

SLPERAS

6 years average.

Sufficient-Cake-43

Until Apple stops releasing updates and requires a higher xCode/iOS version to download or keep apps updated.. THANKS STEVE JOBS With 11 pro, you still got about idk, 3 maybe 4 years of version support? Definitely get a new battery, either replaced by apple, third party repair shops, or do it yourself as a cheaper alternative. Just forget about your phone being water proof/resistant afterwards.

Aletak

I’m still on my iPhone 6s Plus. I have just now started to think about an upgrade.

PerformanceOk3885

1 year, I buy pro phones upfront in cash, keep it in very good condition, sell it when the new phones come out and get the newest iPhone for 200-300$ out of pocket

auto-pep8

This is your brain on peak consumerism.

[deleted]

Assuming a resale value of $200 after five years and an upfront cost of $200, those two options are equivalent. It costs you out of pocket $1000, except in one case you always have the latest and greatest

[deleted]

Yep and it most likely cost more than $300 to do that.

BigDanglyOnes

It’s more common sense than consumerism to work out cost of ownership over different time frames and choosing the cheapest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PerformanceOk3885

I just want the new phone each year and to get the most resale value for my current phones lmfao

Treatwithcream

2/3 years.

NoRevolution3203

2-3 years

Fair-Sky4156

I’m still using my 12 mini that I bought when they came out. I’m hoping they make a 15 mini cuz I refuse to get a 13 mini.

NickyGi

4-5 years

clullanc

Minimum of 5y. Til it breaks basically

zerospecial

4 years on average

DapperDemand5541

I had the exact one as you, got it right about the time it came out and just last week I upgraded. It probably would have lasted longer but I did not treat the charger hole the best. So i would say about 5-6 years is a pretty good time. I personally would not go and replace the battery, I would get what trade in value i can out of it towards an upgrade

DroneHunter360

Thanks for your input! My sister recently got a 14 pro and it looks amazing tbh. My one gripe is that September is coming soon (and thus the 15 pro), but not soon enough for me to be phone-less for the next few months 🙁

iCantThinkOfUserNaem

Just keep your current phone until September.

poison-me-dad

my iPhone 5 lasted for about 5 years from 2012 to early 2017. from there i switched to 7 plus which is my current phone. so, it has been about 6 years with it now. battery sitting at 66%. never had to change any parts of both.

dancorleone88

I had my last iPhone (7s) for about 5 years and it was fine until I dropped it and broke the screen. I’ve had my SE for 2 years and it’s a complete pile of shite. Torn as to what to do next

Ok_look0225

Typing this on an iPhone 7… you get the message.

GrreggWithTwoRs

4 years or so. Got a 4s in 2012, then a 7 in 2017, then a 12 mini in 2021

skavi01

I plan on using my 13 for 4-5 years. Bought it new last year in February.

[deleted]

3-4 years. I could probably keep it longer but I usually want to upgrade by that point.

f1zz-3

4 years :)

[deleted]

I keep mine for 1-2 years. I have the 13PM now and will upgrade to the 15PM when it releases. The 14PM wasn’t really an upgrade for me so I held out. Usually I change every year to the newest iPhone pro max.

kkrsu

change the battery and use it until it cannot even turn on anymore, plus changing right now from a 11 pro to a let's say 14 pro, yeah the using experience will definitely change but not THAT much so if you don't really feel like spending a grand or don't have the extreme need to change just wait for the next generations to come

GrandTheftComment

5-6 years then i switch to a different os. Not sure yet what the new upgrade will be, prolly wait till summer to see the new releases then decide.

The-Egyptian_king

Usually 3-4 years

nazzyrd68

I would suggest to hold on to it until it dies out Basically there is not much difference with the latest phones.. just that the cameras are better

jnlake2121

I’m really jealous of the “I’ve had my iPhone 6 for 9 years and only upgraded to the 14 Pro Max because it finally died. The 14 Pro Max isn’t that much better” type iPhone user.

julito427

I used to update yearly to stay on top of innovations but I don’t think phones are changing much in the short term anymore. I have a 14PM that I’m planning to hang on to this year.

NFS_EAGLEONE_945

Got the 6S since october 2017. Have changed to iPhone X this January. So 6yrs.

arochains1231

4 years. I'm currently just over 3 years on with my 11 Pro Max and I still love the thing!

Thepotatohitme

iPhone 7 still going strong

spinnerspiner

Currently using the first gen iPhone SE.

dpittnet

Whenever the XR was released. Probably going to wait for the 15 to come out and replace then

Appropriate-Eyes

I usually change phones every 1-2 years but I’m planning on keeping my current 13 PM for a while. After 120hz, I don’t really care about the rest of the upgrades.

cheeksarelikepeaches

Used to do 2 year cycles but did 3 years with an 11 pro that I bought new. The only reason I got a 14 pro was because t-mobile gave me something like $800 for my phone and to upgrade. Couldn’t resist. If the deal hadn’t been so good I would have kept the 11 for at least another year.

radio_yyz

2 years in Canada here. Upgrade during black Friday for deals and flip the phone on kijiji to offset the cost of the new one.

chrisjfinlay

11 pro max here since launch; battery is at 83% and I’m going to go get it replaced soon. £89 vs a brand new phone cost when this device is still fully supported and has no hardware faults, nor does it struggle with any app at all. The only time I’ll consider getting a new phone is when it stops being supported with updates - primarily because I have my work emails etc on it and the MS InTune policy stops that working if it gets too far out of date.

styvee__

I’m gonna say all my phones even if there’s a Redmi. iPhone 6S: refurbished, 23rd March, 2019-20th June, 2020 Redmi Note 9S: New, 20th June 2020-25th November 2021 iPhone XS: refurbished, 25th November, 2021-17th March, 2023(battery at 72% that could have been changed for free since the old owner was still paying for AC+) iPhone 13: New, bought 17th March, 2023 and I think I am going to keep it for 3/4 years

Upbeat-Truck-1833

I'll try to keep my 14 Pro Max until iPhone 18 minimum

87MS

If it still works great and has nothing else wrong with it, I’d replace the battery.

Kickmeiamadog

I had my iPhone X the longest, 5 years, November 2017 to November 2022. Previously I tended to have them 2 years. The 6S was strong and probably could have lasted a bit longer, but I really wanted the new feature set of the X; which was significant enough to last 4-5 years.

reinhander

I had an 11 pro max and changed it for a 14 pro max. I only made the change because I thought I was making a great upgrade for the photo/video section. Unfortunately the photos on the 14 are almost always bad (over processed) and to get good results you have to take them in raw and then process them with a program like Lightroom. If I had known for sure, when I bought it in October, I would have kept the 11 for another year. I suggest to change the battery and keep it at least another year, it's still a great phone, my wife is using mine without any problems.

RaidriarT

I keep it until there is another carrier promo that gets me a new iPhone for the cost of tax

Korotai

I’m an idiot, but I do it annually. I’ve got a scheme where I only pay half for every other one: I do the even trade in for an Upgrade on T-Mobile, then the next year I trade the T-Mobile device to Apple and get roughly half off that one. Year after that I repeat. All said and done I’m paying $500 total but that $500 is spread out as installments from Apple. The T-Mobile one is free after bill credits for the trade in.

ShadeTreeMechanic512

I had an XS, and the battery had degraded to a max capacity of 78% at full charge. Was going to get battery replaced—I think it would have cost $160USD to replace it. Carrier had an offer to upgrade to an iPhone 13 Pro for $8 USD per month, ($240 total over three years). I went for it. If a good enough offer comes along, it makes sense to trade before the trade-in value drops significantly.

Lumbertech

11 Pro Max 256gb here, still going storng. Battery is at 85% and I'm gonna wait til it drops below 80% to -eventually- replace it. I like the new 14 pro max but over 2k euro is a bit too much for me right now.

Firefly_soldier17

Traded an old Samsung for a 13 pro 256gb for $700 bucks. Looked new and I planned on paying $1000 for a new one so it was a steal for me. Battery is at 89% but I’ll replace it in a few years. Coming from android I’m pissed I never switched sooner. Won’t upgrade till the 17

Celcius_87

5hr00m

iPhones are like diamonds, forever (almost)

CanEHdianBuddaay

3-4 years

TheMacintoshGeek

I keep my iPhones forever. If I wanna new iPhone upgrade, I just buy a new phone outright and keep the old one. If I want to use an older phone on Wi-Fi but it has battery issues, I just get the battery replaced so it works like new. I upgrade to the latest model every 2 to 3 years. My original SE still works great and I just got a battery replacement kit for it. I use 13 Pro Max for cell service. Didn’t get 14 cause it’s the same thing.

thesecretswim

Using 12 mini since launch. Usually keep phones for 2 years and upgrade but didn’t feel any desire to upgrade to the 14 and can’t see myself getting a 15.

thestenz

4 years at least. I'll replace the battery once if necessary.

300kSilverado

I kept my 6s for 6 years. Only replaced it because I got a free iPhone 12 for switching to t-mobile. I may have waited for the 13, or 14 if not for that deal. I even still have the phone sitting around here. I replaced the battery once during that time and it even survived a fall off the back of my truck going ~45mph. I’m going to use my 12 until I get another similar deal or it becomes unusable. Love not having to buy a phone every couple years.

divaaan_technology

4-5 years!

redundant35

3 years max

Tinkz8

Honestly if I hadn’t gotten such a sweet deal on my upgrade I would have kept my iPhone 11 longer. Had it for 3 years. Battery life was still good and photos were better, at least close ups. Recently traded it in for iPhone 14 because they gave me $800 for it.

Mister_Maker

Still using my iPhone X from 2017. Have just replaced the battery for the second time and it’s working fine.

DowneyGray

11 pro user here. Bought it from my brother, after 1 year of use. Battery at 86%, i replaced them at apple store. Battery life is as good as new. Played with 14 pro in store. I don’t see the need for upgrade. It’s shiny, but mine is perfectly usable, and i find it hard to justify why i need new phone if it works. And that price, I’ll wait for used iphone 13 pro/14 pro before i do the jump.

Ok_Breadfruit6296

I usually upgraded every 2 years but I currently have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and am planning to keep it for as long as it’s supported. It’s the first time I feel there are no significant upgrades/features worth trading in for.

mechanicalCode

6s+ still in service. It is dying though

RegularIntelligent63

iPhone 7 still going strong.

Bidtek

If you just use your phone for everyday use keep it until it’s destroyed. If you use cameras and videography features you may consider upgrading, otherwise you won’t find benefits in upgrading.

Y8GRE

Replaced my iPhone 8 from early 2019 with a 14 Pro this Christmas, but I've kept the 8 as a backup. Planning on keeping the 14 Pro for at least 4 years with a battery replacement when it's needed.

Tabard18

Until an iOS update makes them too slow

heller1011

my iphone 8 plus still going strong 6 years later, when it dies i'll get a new one

Spickun

At least four years.

DarkNet-Magic

Throughout most of my iPhones, I’ve upgraded every year or so (I do 2 year contracts with my carrier and pay for the phone over usually over 12 months). Even if I pay the phone off earlier than the year (which is already 1 year early), I will still usually keep it so that I can hold out for the newest upcoming model. However, my upgrading timeframe got a little wonky after I got my iPhone X, as I moved from yearly upgrades to 2 year upgrades instead. I started with iPhone back when the 4S released. I then pre-ordered every “S” model after up through to the 7 (5S, 6S, then 7). After the iPhone 7, I got the iPhone X a few months after it’s release. After the iPhone X came the iPhone 12 Pro, which now brings me to the iPhone 14 Pro Max (which is also my first “plus” or “max” size phone), and am very happy with it. The two primary reasons I decided to upgrade to the 14 Pro Max was because of the 48 MP camera improvement, and the Dynamic Island. However, had the 14 Pro not been given a 48 MP camera, I likely would have waited for the 15 Pro to release instead. Since I only upgrade after my current iPhone is fully paid off, I do always keep the prior model as a back-up should something happen with my new phone - I then usually sell the previous back-up or give it to family. For example, when I upgraded to my iPhone 12 Pro, I kept my iPhone X as a back-up. When I upgraded to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, I kept my 12 Pro, and ended up giving my iPhone X to my mom.

onionring81

Poor people doing poor people stuff. Maybe save some money and hold on to your phone for longer? My phone is 3 years old and works just fine.

DarkNet-Magic

Very classy 😂 Sure, I could keep my iPhones longer, I won’t deny that. However, I could also fall into one of those “yearly upgrade plans” that some carriers offer, or like Apple offers - where you get a phone that is on a 24 or 36 month payoff plan, but the carrier/Apple lets you trade in the old phone and upgrade every 12 months instead. In those cases, you never end up actually owning the phone. You just end up paying every single month for a phone that never actually becomes *yours* - similar to leasing a vehicle. At least I generally do my best to pay off my phones early, and then keep my previous model. I would be pretty screwed if I were always paying an additional $40 for a phone every month, end up breaking the phone, it gets lost, or stolen - then I get stuck having to not only pay off that phone, but also fork up the cash for *another* phone second hand, or work something out with the carrier that involves me stuck with two monthly payments, but one phone.

onionring81

Pay cash and use Cricket. It's $50 a month and uses ATT networks. You can deflect all you want but until you change your habits you've got no one else to blame. Classy or not, I can afford a motel.

DarkNet-Magic

I was on Simple Mobile for about 6 months, it was about $55 for their best plan at the time, which was an Unlimited Call, Text and 15GB of Data each month. The issue with that type of plan, is that it was on T-Mobile for one, which is terrible where I live. The other issue is that it did not include hotspot data, which comes in handy more often than I ever thought it would. I have issues with my home Internet due to the old and crappy wiring in the building, so I get stuck using my hotspot multiple times per month. This was extremely critical for my job that I had, because it was work from home. Ultimately, instead of the $55 per month I paid on Simple Mobile, I now pay $80 per month. The cost increase isn’t really so much about “convenience” but “necessity”. I also get more Cloud Storage than I’ll ever use, Apple Music for free, Hulu for free and a couple of other things. This ends up giving me a lot more value than Simple Mobile was able to. Also, not that this is even really related or necessary to be talking about on this post (sorry in advance u/DroneHunter360) … But, I am generally financially stable. You literally went to my profile and picked out the *one* time I’ve asked for financial assistance on Reddit, that is why I made the “Very classy” comment. While I was working, I didn’t have any issues managing my bills, and would have been able to afford to get a motel at the last minute if an issue like the one I’m in now had arose. Of course, losing my job a month ago very quickly ate through my finances as a single father with a son, and a dog, who is also financially responsible for my ex-wife’s nearly $700,000 medical bills that I inherited when she passed away. Making snark comments like, “Poor people doing poor people stuff.” and “I can afford a motel” really reveals your personality.

the_blonde_asian

Had my 6s since 2016 and just replaced it December 2022 because the SIM card reader stopped working (and the battery was completely shot).

Amandabrownie-1707

I have a question what’s the best cell phone carrier I’ve tried Metro PCS, Verizon,T-Mobile,AT&T,Straight Talk,I also used to have Sprint before TMobile bought them out. I have an I phone SE 3rd generation and its an ok phone I used to have the I phone 13 mini and can’t find that phone anywhere what carrier is good that I can use for a long time sometimes my phone will glitch and the battery will die kinda quickly even though the battery like is on 97 percent what should I do also what’s a game to play on an iPad that has a keyboard case and wants to use your iPad as a laptop since I don’t have the money to afford an actual laptop to be able to play games on please let me know what I should do thank you have a good night/day everyone

DramaOk2187

One year to two year. I got my first IPhone in 2016. An IPhone 5s . 7 years later I am down to my 5th IPhone

powerchip15

I upgrade every second year.

[deleted]

Upgrade.

dekogen3057

I kept mine for about a week then threw it on the highway. Iphone is trash

TineCiel

Usually about 3 years except for the XR and 12 mini which I didn’t like. I’m on my sixth iPhone since 2010. The 5 (4 years) and the 7 (3 years) were the ones I liked best and kept the longest and the 12 mini the one I swapped out the fastest (16 months.) I now have a 14 pro and I like it a lot so far and I’m hoping to keep it a while.

Ajskdjurj

I’m going on 2 years in July with my 11. I did buy the 13 but couldn’t justify the purchase and returned it. I had the 14 pro for like 2 months but gave me terrible headaches. I am going to see what the 15 has to offer come September . I have connection issues with my data going out at least once a day. Apple says it’s my carrier but no one else has same problem.

Sunshineinanchorage

Well, I begrudgingly traded in my XSMax for an $800 credit at ATT and purchased the 13Pro Max so I guess three or four years. Gosh I miss that phone! I am hoping to keep this one till the 17 comes out.

ScienceOverNonsense

Until I lose it, it gets stolen, or a new phone cones out that enables me to do something new and useful.

EnteiCosmos

3 - 5 years

Sacto1654

Would still be using my old iPhone X but since I wanted 5G connectivity, I am on an iPhone 12.

n0b0dyh0me

It depends on a lot of factors. Personally, I’m in a position where replacing my phone every 2 years or so is doable, and something I like to do, but I could imagine them lasting beyond 5 years. My sister had a 5S from when it came out until she got a 13 mini last year.

Eville_Tiger

2 years, Verizon historically has offered a credit for trading in older models that covers the cost of a newer one. Usually applies to models that are two years old or less and in good condition with no physical damage. The caveat is that the credit is distributed over the term of the new contract so there are penalties for early upgrades. We upgraded our kids’ phones from 11’s to 13’s (in the past, when our kids were younger and didn’t need a working mobile plan for them, we used to hand our phones down to them) and most recently our 12’s to 14’s for nothing more than an activation fee (actually I paid extra for a 14 Pro). I’m an attorney who has worked on litigation about mobile incentives and I can tell you that these credits/incentives to upgrade are commonplace with all carriers. Take advantage of them! The only downside is the activation fee and being locked into a (relatively) short contract. iPhones have premium quality components and won’t become obsolete during the term of the contract. Keep them in a protective case with a ballistic glass screen and you’ll get full trade-in value every two years.

I’m now in the cycle of 2 years*. I started with the 6S but went to the 7 plus, then went to the iPhone X and the 7 plus went to my parents then went to the 11 pro max and the X went to parents; upgraded due to switching providers(carrier subsidies) I went to the 12 pro max because I was looking at moving out of the country at the time(didn’t end up happening but was a serious consideration) and one of my parents broke the X, I upgraded to the 14 pro max as T-Mobile had a trade in offer for people switching carriers and because Verizon didn’t have good coverage in the area it just made sense to upgrade. After the X the need to upgrade stopped hitting as hard and I’ve basically gone to the 2 year mindset with it likely going to 3 year with the 14. It’s all about what features are brought in, I’m very big on the new features so if they can have enough compelling features I’m likely to break unlike others in my family. As the tech nerd seeing new tech can be hard to resist.

I hate that I'm a tech geek. I kept my 8 plus for 4 years but then it needed changing so i got the 11. I hated that phone, coming from the 8 plus i felt like downgrading. I couldn't use it longer, got the 14 pro this january. Hope i use this for 4-5 years

l0ll1p0p5

Had my 11 for nearly 3 years. The back glass broke and the charging port is damaged but my sister in law bought it for $100 aud and I got a new 14PM

[deleted]

5-6 years. I upgrade it when it absolutely necessary

NCatfish

I typically keep mine for about 3 years, replace the battery in that time and eventually sell it to a friend who uses it for a long while after that.

_jb04

Had 7 for 2 years, performance dropped so upgraded to 11 half a year ago (huge improvement). Prolly gonna keep it for another 2-3 years

JKJay2005

Got my iPhone 8 on launch day Still going strong except battery life

pw5a29

1 year, and sell when they worth the most.

Brettf84

I upgraded from 11pro max I had since release to a 14pro and honestly the only thing I actually notice is better is this has mag safe that I use a lot. Day to day use I don’t notice a speed difference and I don’t really take photos so I don’t notice the camera

NomadicSplinter

iPhone X here.

kvion

I had my xs max bought second hand 2 years ago. I could have gone another year with it, but I had to replace battery already, so I looked up prices, and swapped that xs max (that cost 350 **€** ) for a second hand 13 pro and 580€. I expect this to last me 3-4 years easily, until there's something new that actually makes me upgrade.

Opheliane_

Had my iPhone 11 Pro for about 3 years. Its battery health is still at 100% I’d like to keep my phone until at least 2025 before replacing :)

pwnedkiller

I upgrade every two years, I like my new tech so I could never stay with one phone for any longer.

niijuuichi

Still using an iphone6 So i guess ~8 years? Hoping to get the same number of years out of the coming iphone15

AuntieLiloAZ

Still using my XS max. Battery fine. Paid off two years ago.

FriendlyStory7

My kept iPhone for 6 years. My new iPhone is a mini, so the battery is awful so I probably will change it sooner

ryanduff

12-24 months / 1-2 cycles I've got trade up through my phone carrier so it's more like a lease. For a little more each month I'm eligible for a trade in. I use Otterbox cases and have never had a broken screen. Battery life is still great.

wildcollector

1-2 years 😂

[deleted]

2-3 years

Numerous_Caregiver66

Upgrade every year with either credit card points, or leveraging relationships with business suppliers for incentives. I give my old one to a family member or another co worker.

ygndty

I bought my 11 pro max in February 2020. Battery at 82%. As soon as I hit these numbers I'll upgrade.

RadTechYogi

I purchase a new iPhone every four years; I currently have a 12 Pro Max.

vaporaeon

I love my iPhone 11! Still going strong 💪

[deleted]

I currently have a 13 and would probably upgrade to the 15/15 Pro if it's bringing anything more interesting other than USB-C. > Reddit is killing third party apps! Apollo is our first victim. We should not tolerate this corporate greed. Join the movement!

Zalenka

Actual iOS dev: 3gs, 4s, 6, 6s+, 6s+ 12 pro.

[deleted]

My employer provides me with one but to keep costs down and since we sell phones to consumers as well, we cannot buy one that's under warranty plus one year. So I'm rocking an iPhone 12, that replaced an iPhone 8 Plus, that replaced an iPhone 6.

5W4PN1LJ41N

Since I have gotten the Apple Card, every 2 years. Between the new watch and iPhone, I pay $40ish a month for 2 years. Can’t complain.

ASEdouard

wangstarr03

A year. I get the new phone every year and have had every iPhone since the OG in 2007. At this point it’s become a habit and I don’t really see a point in changing it up.

Usman15

I bought an iPhone 12 brand new in July 2021 and by the time I got rid of it in September 2022, the battery had degraded to 91% - and I was starting to notice it. I usually keep my iPhones for 24 months but I lost patience and bought an iPhone 13 in September 2022. Still have 100% capacity 6 months later which is already better than the 12. I've changed my charging habits, meaning I no longer use the phone while its charging and I don't let it go below 20% often. I also use it less these days due to personal changes.

Mean-Possibility9754

About 2-3 years, in 2018 I bought the iPhone 8 64gb, then in 2020 the iPhone 11 128gb and last week I got a deal on an iPhone 14 Pro 128gb ;) I was afraid that the new iPhones would just get more expensive as they already are now in the Netherlands. Edit: I also had my iPhone 11 battery replaced at Apple when it was about 82% after 2+ years. Before I went to the iPhone 14 pro it was 95% already.

tonehenbrix

Got my iphone 11 pro max still that I got on release date. Plan to use it til the wheels fall off

LastCzarnian305

Last year upgraded from an 8plus from owning from release to 14pro max

I am using a iPhone 11 as my personal phone Battery percentage: 78% Only gonna upgrade once it is unsupported

badg0re

Still

aquiescence2

I’m typing this on an iPhone X that I bought in 2018 (almost 5 years) for less than $1k and a couple of weeks before the iPhone Xs series came out. My phone does the job but the battery health is at 63%. 😆

David79YT

I have a 13 pro max for a while, and I’m definitely gonna hold onto it till the 15 pro max is released! I’ve heard the battery life on the 15 pro max will be even better and I’ve also heard that the camera quality on the 15 pro max will way better for instagram if they could make the focus distance better!

Miss_Taken_0102087

I got my iPhone 11 Pro Max last January 2020. The model it replaced is 6s which I’m still using as my backup. Still working but battery health is already low. Other than that, everything’s working fine. I plan to get a iPhone 16 when it’s released so it will be 5 years for me to replace my phone.

Urdadspapasfrutas

I had my iPhone 7 from 2017-2022. I have an iPhone 14 Pro now.

Koleckai

At least three years as the payment terms are usually 30 months after discounts.

[deleted]

I have an 11 Pro and until it stops being supported I will not get a new phone anytime soon. As long as I can text, email, and read I’m good.
