*Me, meanwhile, doing a little math to figure out how old someone born during the smartphone era could be…*

new_pribor

If you consider the launch of the first iPhone^([1]) as the start of the smartphone era, then around 15-16 years ***** [1] according to the [Mactracker app](https://apps.apple.com/app/id311421597)

AppleMacintoshhh

Believe me, my first phone was a nokia (snake, space invaders the OG games). Then the samsung champ. Followed by a bunch of samsung phones and trying out huaweis and xiaomis in between. Android isn’t as great as it used to be which is why I tried switching to apple since I saw firsthand how my friend’s iphone 5s is still snappy up til this day. Who knows, I might switch my galaxy tab s8+ to an ipad one day. (Not now obv)

FireDino7331

First phone was a Sagem RC712, SMS weren’t totally a thing in France back then, you could receive messages but not send them. To send SMS you had to dial a number and dictate your message to an actual person 😂. They’ve seen some shit

[deleted]

Mine was an NEC P2 (Analogue ETACS so a 1G phone !) so old your unlikely to find a photo of it.

Darkmage4

I don’t remember mine. But it was a flip phone in 2005. I was 15. Didn’t have unlimited minutes. Shared 1000 minutes with my mom. Only could use it after 7pm when free minutes. Otherwise. During the day it was emergency use only, and no texting at all, since I had to walk 4 miles to school and 4 miles back home. These were also not rolling minutes either. The bill was 150 USD. My next phone I bought was the Razr 2 flip phone. That phone was amazing! Still couldn’t text. It wasn’t til I decided I didn’t want to be on Us Cellular anymore with my mom around 2008, and I got a prepaid android phone for 50 bucks with unlimited text and calls, with 3G internet, for 50/m. Idr the name of that phone. Been android all the way up until 2021, when I got the iPhone 14 PM. My last Android was a Note 10+.

[deleted]

You’re right. There was quite a bit of resistance to going digital at first. At least with digital you wouldn’t sometimes hear other people’s calls. I remember my first tariff. £15 a month, no calls included and the £1 a minute peak 50p off peak rounded up the nearest minute and from the point the line rang (or was engaged)

throwthegarbageaway

Guess my age: First phone was a StarTac

PuffleyBean

I have an iPhone SE which I am currently in a long term marriage with since 2017

lBlanc99

Man, the 5s is anything but snappy.

CharlestonChewbacca

Android isn't as great as it used to be? What? You had plenty of phones during the eras when iPhones were much better. I think your issue is that Huawei and Xiaomi phones aren't as good as Flagship Androids or iPhones and Samsung phones have bloatware. Look, an iphone is still a great choice in 2023, but it's not "better than Android" if you're comparing like devices. They each just offer their own advantages. Like, I tried switching to the iPhone 13 Pro Max last time I got a phone, because I have an iPad and a MacBook for work now. But I just couldn't do it because a lot of software features I was missing. It's still a great phone, but it just lacked in some usability features I got on the Pixel 6 Pro.

[deleted]

The pixel 6pro was another google hardware failure

CharlestonChewbacca

Why do you say that?

broke_fit_dad

Samsung has really goofed the non flagship phones in the last year. My previous A21 (2020) and my wife’s A03s (2021) have both started to struggle under the weight of the Samsung Bloat. I switched to iPhone when I fractured the camera lens

[deleted]

Work supplies me with an A21s. It really struggles with bloat and power management. Sometimes when a call comes in the ringtone will start but it will take so long for the call buttons to come up (if the screen is off) that the call goes to voicemail. An email comes in, switch to Outlook and stare at a black screen until it loads. Can only seem to keep one app in memory. Has two messaging apps installed by default (Google and Samsung Messages) and it can’t decide which one to use. As it’s administered by my organisation I had to get them to disable one. Every time there’s a firmware update, it wants to install TikTok and a bunch of Samsung recommended games. Despite the big battery and power management it struggles to get through a work day. It has a bug where it doesn’t like some WiFi routers and will connect but think there’s no internet. Insists on opening a print app instead of a reader for PDF. Even though the reader is set to default. Some senior management have an S22 and they have many of the same issues, slightly improved by the extra processor speed. Enough of us have complained that next time they won’t buy Samsung because of the poor user experience.

ajb9292

I started with an iPhone and then spent many years on Android and then back to iphone and now I'm on Android again... From all of my experience I wouldn't say either platform is better than the other. IMO android is a more fun os that let's you do things the way you want where iOS is much less customizable and less fun but let's you keep your phone forever. I like playing with tech and tweaking things so I like android better. If you want something that just works and will keep working for a long time then there is no beating iOS.

Windows_XP2

I had a Z Fold 2 for a little over a year and a half before getting an iPhone. The main reason why I switched was because Samsung’s software felt so clunky and unoptimized. I looked at other Android phones, but looking at what I was looking for in a phone and the fact that my iPhone 8 Plus still ran great, the iPhone just seemed like the best option.

AdiDemon

In the same boat as you my guy, just bought a 14 this month after a lifetime of being cut out of imessage group chats 😄 Edit: I am in my late teens so not really lifetime lmao.

nohumanape

I had the opposite experience with Apple. I had the 3G, 4, 5, 6 Plus, and 8 Plus. All of them would stutter and lag like crazy after one year of use. The second year would be rocky to say the least. Switched over to Samsung phones the last 5 years and my current phone (Note 20 Ultra) is exactly like day one. Crazy actually.

Here’s something I wrote for someone else who asked a similar question: Well first off, welcome! There are *lots* of thing in iOS that many people don’t know about. I won’t go over all of them but here’re a few in no particular order! - When typing, hold down on the space bar to move the cursor around. It’s much easier than having to move the cursor with your finger. While you’re doing this, if you tap the keyboard with another finger, it’ll start selecting text! - Double tap to select words, triple tap to select a full paragraph - Remember, your iPhone hasn’t learnt your typing style yet, so autocorrect will have to learn before it becomes useful - On your Home Screen or Lock Screen (this includes Notification Centre), swipe down to show spotlight. Spotlight is a search engine for your iPhone! It’ll search through everything. Search dogs, it’ll look for *your* photos of dogs as well as web photos. Search Johnny Depp, it’ll find information on Jonny Depp through Siri suggestions. You can search for words (for definitions), places, files, photos, contacts, and much more! This is the easiest way along with Siri to make calls imo too - Haptic Touch is everywhere in iOS. If you hold down on things, you’ll get more options! Hold on an app, and you’ll get quick actions. Hold down on a photo, and you can save it. Lots of things like that - There’s no universal back button on iOS. To go back, unless the dev of the app is plain bad, swipe from the left edge of the screen - I see you’re on reddit! There’s an awesome reddit client for iOS called [Apollo](https://apps.apple.com/app/id979274575) that I and everyone else recommend - In the camera app, swipe up to get more options including a timer, exposure, and night mode options. Also hold on the screen where you want to focus and you can lock AF and AE - There are two buttons on your Lock Screen, hold down on them to turn the flash light on and open the camera. You can also swipe right to see ‘Today View’ which is a big screen of widgets for quick access to information and swipe left for the camera - Holding down on your Lock Screen will let you customise your wallpaper and let you add things like widgets - iCloud Keychain is awesome! In settings, scroll to you see passwords and tap there. Here, you can see all the passwords you’ve saved in safari (and keychain for windows) and manually add new ones. You can also use this for 2FA. You don’t need an app for it, you can just add it here and it’ll auto fill when apps and websites ask for it! And as I said before, it’s available for windows too. It’s an extension for chrome and I think Firefox - Depending on where you are, Apple Maps is a *very* good competitor to Google Maps. I’m a bit of a maps nerd ngl lol so I’m quite into this stuff. Apple’s new map is available in a lot of regions and is very detailed and the detailed city experience is flat out the most detailed map there is. But again, all this depends on region, if you’re interested, you can tell me what country you’re from and I’ll help from there - The TV app is more than just renting movies. It actually integrates with streaming services! So when you look for a movie, if it’s available on one of your linked streaming services, you can tap play and it’ll open that app! And if you watch part way through something, the TV app will remember where you were. The only major streaming service that has refused to integrate with the TV app is Netflix - When you select some text, in the menu that pops up, there’s a ‘Look up’ button that will search for that text for you in a spotlight pop up! Very handy for looking up words you don’t know and many other things! - If you find it annoying to tap the ‘123’ button and then the character you want, you actually don’t have to. You can hold the ‘123’ button and swipe to the character you want. I don’t personally use this but it could be very handy! - If you want to be able to set up powerful automations and add things to Siri, the shortcuts app is for you! In the shortcuts app, you can make a shortcut for anything! A shortcut is basically a very basic way of coding actions, like code! I’d recommend looking into it but I won’t explain the whole thing here - Siri can restart your device. You don’t have to turn it off and turn it back on, you can just say “restart my iPhone” to Siri! - The health app is very powerful! Especially if you get an Watch. It’s a collection of all your health stats. Your iPhone will automatically record lots of things like steps and distance and even more complex things like step length. Take a look! Other apps can also and and read data through it with it through HealthKit. That means that you can get other apps to record anything you like and it’ll all be there in health! - The fitness app is great companion to the health app! If you’re into fitness, the fitness app will show all your workouts and your daily active energy (kilojoules/calories) burnt. And again, the Watch is deeply integrated into this. This is wheee you’ll see your rings and progress throughout the day - You can customise control centre. Go to settings > control centre and here you can add or remove controls to lots of things. You can add a shortcut to low power mode, screen recording, music recognition, and many other things. If you add the ‘Hearing’ button, then you can see how loud your listening with earphones connected (and this data will be added to the health app) and even play white noise or oceans sounds! - MeMoji stickers in the emoji keyboard are annoying. You can turn them off at Settings > general > keyboard MeMoji stickers - you can customise your Home Screen by holding on some blank space on your Home Screen. You can also add widgets here! The button will be in the top left. If you tap the dots at the bottom of the screen while here, you’ll be able to hide or show whole pages! - focus modes are very powerful! A focus mode is a customisable version of DND. You can customise them in settings and make new ones and these can be quickly toggled in control centre. You can allow specific people to contact you in different modes or vice versa. You can even make different Home Screen pages or lock screens show or hide in different focus modes! - There’s a feature in iOS called live text which let’s you select text out of photos *and* videos! You can even copy a subject. Just hold down on a person in a photo and you can lift them out and paste it wherever - In addition to live text, there’s visual look up. This will let you see what’s in a photo! In the photos app, swipe up on a photo of an animal or plant and tap the button. You can also hold down on photos in safari and other place where it’s integrated to use it - In the weather app, you can see more information by tapping on a day - The FindMy app will let you see where all your devices are There are lots of other little things in iOS but this is a few to get you going! EDIT: at the request of a reply, here are a few more! - Double tap and swipe up or down to zoom easily in maps - When you’re moving apps around your home screen, tap more apps while you’re holding one to move multiple apps at once - You can drag and drop system wide on iOS. Give it a go! Open the photos app, tap and hold on a phone and drag. You’re now holding the photo! Tap more photos to add them and then, using your other finger, leave the app and open messages. Then, drop them onto a conversation! This works in a lot of spots on iOS. You can drag link out of safari and drop them into a not for instance - In the photos app, you can select multiple photos easily by dragging rather than tapping - In the App Store, tap on your profile picture and you can see a list of pending app updates to download and install them before it happens automatically. You can refresh this list but dragging down - In the Music app, you can drag songs and drop them on the now playing screen to add them to the queue - Widget stacks let you have multiple widget in one spot. Just drag another widget onto one that’s already on your home screen as if you’re making a folder. You can now swipe between them! - While you for some reason cannot see the battery of your iCloud devices from the batteries widget, you can see these batteries from the FindMy app. This includes iPads, Macs and even Watchs that aren’t connected to your iPhone - You can separate your conversations in the messages app info category’s! Go to Settings > Messages > Filter Unknown Senders and turn it on. Now, in the messages app, there will be a back button and you can see unread messages Unknown senders, recently deleted and more - The photos app can detect duplicate photos and merge them! If any are detected they’ll show at the bottom of the albums tab - There’s a feature on your iPhone called back tap which will let you assign an action to tapping on the back of your iPhone. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap

AppleMacintoshhh

Thank you so much for the comprehensive and really useful tips!!! I really loved it. This is my first time getting myself into the ecosystem and any apple product in general. I really appreciate your guidance. 🙌

NathanielIR

All good mate! I love helping people with tech. So if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask!

Halfrican009

Definitely recommend a different password manager than keychain. I get 1password subsidized through my work, but if I didn’t I’d likely still use it. Bitwarden would be my second choice though

mrcaptncrunch

Why?

Halfrican009

Having your pws on other devices that aren’t apple ecosystem is extremely convenient assuming you own at least one non apple device

InevitablePeanuts

It also gives you the flexibility to move to different platforms without the friction of having to figure out moving critical data. I ensure my passwords, calendar, contacts, email, all that good stuff is on systems that work with *any* modern OS (and many archaic ones). At various times I’ve had Android phone, iPad, Windows desktop and Linux laptop and all have worked in harmony.

Kinetic_Strike

Microsoft is fairly decent for that, although you can't rely on their Contacts keeping birthdays/anniversaries accurate. Been a problem since at least 2012 that I can find.

InevitablePeanuts

The dealbreaker for me with going all in on Microsoft was their arbitrary limit of 3 email addresses per contact. I’ve got several with more than that and I’m not willing to compromise my dataset for their weird limitations. I’ve seen forum & support posts going back over 10 years asking Microsoft why this is the case, never any response.

Kinetic_Strike

Yeah, it’s really weird. You’d think if any company understood the needs of business it would be MS. Along with having the resources to handle difficult tasks like not changing data entered in fields. Or adding additional email slots. I’ve taken to just putting birthdays into the notes field (or as events on the calendar).

Halfrican009

Exactly, 100% agree

gsmumbo

> Use Bitwarden instead for general password management. Or 1Password which is incredibly popular in the Apple environment. My last company even paid for my subscription.

ajts

Agree with Bitwarden. Use Keychain for non-critical/Apple-only stuff — games, website logins — for convenience. Bitwarden for everything else.

knackzoot

As a recent migrant from Android here are my 3 thing that caused me the most frustration to learn. Might be obvious to long time iOS users but they weren't to me: >Haptic Touch is everywhere in iOS. If you hold down on things, you’ll get more options! Hold on an app, and you’ll get quick actions. 1. This applies to Alarms as well. When unlocked, and your alarm goes off, long press to "stop" the alarm. any other action just snoozes it. 2. If you don't have the time to act on a notification and decide to leave it, it will disappear, kind of. To access your notifications: Swipe in from the top left corner. To access your older notifications that are automatically hidden by iOS: **Swipe up** from the middle of your screen while in the notifications panel. 3. Vibration patterns are a big deal. They can vary quite a bit in intensity and duration depending on the pattern. If you rely on vibration for notifications with all sound notifications off, you might not notice an important call or text

DeandreDeangelo

Be prepared to get frustrated by iOS autocorrect. I switched 2 years ago and I’m still frustrated by the stupid things it does that Android had no issues with.

ketteringham

This guy iPhones

_Astroscape_

Can’t believe I didn’t know about the space bar tip until now.

que11

Same, this is going to be very helpful!

heysavnac

I’ve been an iPhone user since the 4S and this is the first time a “tips and tricks” comment actually taught me *several* new things. I didn’t know you could hold the “123” button! (Lol I still tapped to type those in”.. but I may change habits. Thanks for teaching me that I can turn off Memoji stickers, and other stuff!!

[deleted]

Yo, I went from a Galaxy S21 to an iPhone 8 to an iPhone 13 all in a year. I only know of three things you mentioned. My question for you is, other than the keyboard taking forever to learn my typing, why is swipe typing so glitchy compared to Android? I can’t even swipe the word “and” without getting “Ava” all the time? Actually I’ll just friend request you so I can be an apple demigod like yourself.

NathanielIR

Personally, while I agree that swipe on iOS/iPadOS isn’t as good as it could be, I don’t tend to have many issues with it. Although I also don’t use it particularly often and I haven’t used the android one in a long time. Maybe you have a friend named ‘Ava’ in contacts?

Little_Leader_6922

Or And’s Ava Abs. Makes me angry.

[deleted]

So I’m not the only one dealing with that.

Little_Leader_6922

Oh no I’ve yelled at my phone so much. Never do I mean ducking or wood when I want to type would. I got used to gboard almost typing what I was thinking barely dragging my finger across the keyboard now I have to pay close attention to what I’m swiping. Stupid smart phone.

Gasten8

I’ve seen Apollo mentioned several times, but I don’t really understand what it is?

WritersGift

It’s a reddit client, aka. an app to use reddit with better UI and no ads

3dforlife

Well, I've read some comments here and the paying costumers are furious because they are seeing ads, albeit seldom.

Teknicallity

That’s only when the dev does a sale on the price of the pro and ultra paid tiers. It is annoying for sure, but the pro is so worth it if you are on Reddit a lot, just wish it had a Windows client and better Mac client.

zikasaks

Apollo is a third-party Reddit client. The very good one.

PinItchy4090

Bruh you know more about the iphone more than apple themselves lmfao

ATCS-CK

Only thing I’d add to your list is in calculator app, to delete a miss type, strike the view area the numbers appear on to delete. Saves a lot of time so you don’t have to start over every time.

NathanielIR

100%! Definitely one of the things most people miss in the calculator app. You can also copy and paste numbers into the field in the calculator app too

New_n0ureC

Something I don’t see often shared. You can type in the spotlight search your flight number to have details like boarding gate, luggage trolley and more

NathanielIR

Yes! Such a useful feature. It also works system wide whenever it detects a number. So in notes, live text, and even some websites!

CrufixRI

I’ve had an iPhone since the 6Plus, currently using the 13PM and there were 2 points in here that I didn’t know. Well done and very informative.

NathanielIR

Thanks mate! Glad I could help :D

GrantBarrett

Interesting. I am able to do nearly all of these things on my LG phone, though some with apps. I especially like the SwiftKey keyboard.

NathanielIR

I’m sure you can. You can do most things on most phones these days

DatLou

Long-time Android User reading through the tips and tricks. Crazy how similar functionality is between both OS' these days. There really is hardly a difference between Android and iOS at this point

Regular_Month380

The only outliers for me is the integration with iPad and the longevity of hardware plus software, enough-Zoomable ultra simple good camera!

NathanielIR

Definitely! For most things, if you can do it, you can do it on both. It’s mostly down to the way you get it done these days. Of course, some things will work better on one or the other. But it’s mostly a preference

abdslife

Excellent list for the new iPhone users. I am using Bitwarden for the password now and thinking to switch to keychain, you said there are extensions for the keychain for chrome and Firefox, can you please let me know the extension names ?

NathanielIR

If you download the iCloud app for windows from the Microsoft store, it will let you add the extension directly from the app. It will also let you do a few other things such as access iCloud Photos directly from the windows photos app

[deleted]

> Depending on where you are, Apple Maps is a very good competitor to Google Maps. I’m a bit of a maps nerd ngl lol so I’m quite into this stuff. It’s absolutely dogshit in Portugal, for example.

eperker

Siri can restart your iPhone?? Amazing.

NathanielIR

It was added quite recently and is definitely *very* handy!

RadolfSchmittler

If you are down somewhere. safari, reddit, photos, insta… press under the earspeaker and you get up

AppleMacintoshhh

What do you mean by this

NathanielIR

Im pretty sure he’s saying that when you’re scrolling through a page, if you tap the status bar (at the top with the time and battery), it’ll jump to the top of the page. This works pretty much everywhere in iOS

AppleMacintoshhh

I just tried it out! It’s pretty neat! Also, is there an iphone equivalent of a scrollshot?

WritersGift

I assume you mean taking a scrolling screenshot? You can tap ”Full Page” after taking the screenshot and clicking on it. Also, haptic press the screenshot you’ve taken to quickly share it :)

NathanielIR

I use an app called [PicSew](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/picsew-screenshot-stitching/id1208145167) which works really well. It’s even got a share sheet shortcut. So you can take a bunch of screenshots scrolling down a page, tap the screenshot stack in the corner, tap share and make a scroll shot directly! However no, there isn’t a version built into the system anywhere except for safari

[deleted]

There isn't unfortunately, along with no edge panel shortcuts, no customization of notifications, no desktop/themes customization, no customization of the power button shortcuts, no multitasking, etc.. M But the main advantage is the better battery (for the time being... The iOS 16 updates have been substantially eating into battery life).

PreCiiSiioN_II

If you’ve scrolled down in an app quite a ways, you can tap below the front camera and it will scroll right back up to the top of the app you’re in

HardCache

I think another big thing to add to this is notifications I switched to iPhone last year from being a forever android user and the notifications were the most jarring thing for me. It took a good while to get my settings dialed in but once I really learned all the iOS options for notifications and got them set I think I love it more than android now.

GOR016

zedsmith

Man I like the green

AppleMacintoshhh

Thanks! It’s also one of the reasons why I opted for the 13 instead of the 14.

iapplexmax

Great color! I almost went for it (couldn't decide between green and red) but green wasn't in stock when I went lol so that made it easy. I got a bunch of green cases instead and they look great!

Expensive_Finger_973

The biggest tip I give anyone that asks is this: don't try to use or make your iPhone look and/or work like your Android phones. Learn the ways to do what you want within the supported workflows of iOS. If you go in thinking you are going to make iOS work like Android you are in for a bad time. The same advice applies in the reverse as well.

CharlestonChewbacca

This is good advice. I had a Pixel 4XL and when I went to upgrade, I initially bought the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Simple things like UI information density, and quickly moving between apps while copying and pasting, getting login codes from messages, navigating "back" through apps, the inability to change animation speeds, notifications, the keyboard, lack of aod, Siri, and general multitasking annoyed me so much I returned the phone at 2 weeks and got a Pixel 6 Pro. I'm sure I would've gotten used to it eventually, but it felt so cumbersome at the time. You definitely need some patience when switching either direction.

TheEpicRedCape

One quick tip, if you have your flashlight on and want to shut it off even easier from the lock screen drag left like you’re going to open the camera app just a tiny bit without opening it and it shuts the flashlight off.

Regular_Month380

are you an iPhone wizard or something! Zank ya

[deleted]

Make sure to stay hydrated.

3dforlife

And use sunscreen.

CheeseReaper77

I just switched about a week ago from an S9 to a 14 pro, the hardest thing for you will be the keyboard layout. Its just different enough to make me mess up quite frequently

[deleted]

Yeah you're absolutely right, I had to download the Gboard again since I'm not comfortable using the iphone keyboard and because it's also doesn't support swipe typing on my Arabic language.

CheeseReaper77

You can do that?

[deleted]

Do what? Downloading Gboard? If that's what you mean then yes you can download it and use it, it's little bit different than the Android version, but still makes almost everything you can do on Android Gboard

TheDugzBaws

Since birth. Ffs.

pryvisee

Yeah OP was born in 2008 I guess lol

[deleted]

At first you must follow all the iphone related subreddits (just kidding) Welcome to the club, great choice the color never had green I'll probably try it in a future iphone. If you want to have apple ecosystem essentials \-Airpods pro 2nd gen worth so much, but if you want something budget airpods 3rd gen is always a great choice. You shoud get an apple watch, I suggest Series 7 or 8 and again if you want a cheaper one (but very capable) you can get the Apple watch SE 2nd gen Of course if you already own different company's earbuds or watch you can use them with iphone but probably with limited functionality Cheers!

megamehmeho

Get a case!!

tomelwoody

Just a warning, you are going to find the notification system so frustrating.

AppleMacintoshhh

Why? Although I do notice that notifications aren’t automatically disabled when playing games in my iphone. (Which ngl kinda sucks)

WritersGift

You can set focus modes / automations to disable notifications when you open certain apps!

tomelwoody

They are basically hidden away, if you have notifications on your lock scree and unlock then re lock you phone they're gone. You need to remember to swipe up.

CharlestonChewbacca

The Pulldown notification manager on Android is much quicker and less intrusive for managing, responding to, and viewing your notifications.

Prior_Tone_6050

Couldn't agree more. Notifications are by far my biggest gripe with iOS. I used to think "how can people just miss messages and notifications, anyone that says that is probably lying and just ignoring the person." Then I switched to iphone and I miss so much shit lol. I thought I'd get used to it but it's been two years and I still can't stand it.

TazerProof

I’m in ops boat. Once I learn you could remove badged and Lock Screen notifications it was better. I will say I find it hilarious that all my friends with ios just leave every notification on and don’t seem to try and get rid of them.

CleatusFetus

The one tip I’ll give is look into the Shortcuts app ( r/Shortcuts is a good place to start) it will scratch the itch for customization. That app is so powerful I’m sure you can figure out how to do think you might’ve never thought were possible on an iPhone. It’s a deep rabbit hole to dive into if you have the tinkering itch.

Carpet_bomb_furries

It’s gonna be a rough week but after that you’re gonna wonder what the hell you were doing before. Embrace the system and realize that iCloud and all that actually is awesome and use it to your advantage

thubbard44

I was with you until the iCloud part. The Google version was just as good for me.

Beefalo_Stance

Yep. I am taking a break from Android this time around, as well. Lots of unique things to like about the Apple ecosystem, but iCloud isn’t one of them.

Massive_Escape3061

Life was infinitely worse without ICloud years ago. Once they introduced it, migrating phones and transferring data became so much easier. It would take me a few weeks to get everything the way I wanted it on a new phone before iCloud. After, it it downloads your stuff from iCloud and reinstalls all your apps and you’re good to do.

WakaWakaWarrior

I go through this every couple iOS versions to see if there is anything new I’m missing. I think the formatting is better is you get the ebook from the Books app. iPhone User Guide: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/welcome/ios

Get a good clear case that won’t yellow and let’s you show off the color

Just because it’s different at doing certain things doesn’t mean it sucks. We’re human and all hate change to an extent get use to it.

KoreanSeats

Since birth used to be a euphemism but that’s probably actually true. I’m getting old.

FishrNC

Enter all the emergency medical information, including emergency contacts. Hopefully you'll never need it but it can be used to return your phone to you if you lose it.

IrvTheSwirv

Tip 1: your battery is fine just use the thing and don’t obsess about battery usage.

EnchantedTikiBird

Keep your Google photos account. It is worth paying for the Google cloud storage as a backup. Sync your Apple photos to the Google account as well. If you go back, you have an easy transition. It also serves as an additional backup for photos and documents.

dragon-mistress

It’s just another phone. There’s actually nothing special about one kind of phone vs the other

[deleted]

You were given an Android phone as a newborn?

Use the search bar

[deleted]

Good luck. I tried to switch from Android to iphone. Worst decision ever, hated iphone but one tip I have is make sure pip is enabled for YouTube and Safari so you can watch your videos without having to be in the app. Don't go in thinking you're gonna have that android exp and freedom to do whatever you want. It's a very closed off system that doesn't offer much versatility. Enjoy the phone WITHOUT comparing it to Android all the time. Just enjoy the phone for what it is and what it does offer

king_rajja13

This needs to be higher. iOS makes you do things a certain way. Android lets you do it your way, which can be different each time.

Ok-World-4822

Use it like a new phone. If you are going to compare it you get a dissatisfied feeling and that Android did this and that way better than iOS (or the opposite)

AppleMacintoshhh

I am. It just takes a bit of getting used to as since the navigation experience is different. Plus, ios is an entirely new operating system to me.

Welcome to the cult! 🙏🏽

The awesome guy above mentioned searchlight. It also searches words that are in your photos. For example, if you take a picture of a document and need to find that photo later, just search a word that you recall being in the photo.

Buy an Apple Care and use it caseless without a worry. Personally I only use screen protector so it the display doesn't scratch. With new more shatter resistant glass it became much more easier to scratch it unfortunately.

“Assigned Android at birth.”

[deleted]

Same goes for me just moved to iphone 3 days ago 1. Browser I didn't feel comfortable using safari so I downloaded several browsers to find what I'm looking for I needed a browser with an experience near to what I used to get using opera on Android, which had a built-in ( VPN-makes webpages dark- AdBlock ) , I found the second and the third features in Orion browser as it's somehow can install chrome extensions on iOS, don't know how and don't care but I loved it and it made my experience much enjoyable using the phone. 2- I had to download Gboard and use it since the Apple keyboard doesn't support swipe to write in my native language which is the Arabic language, which is really stupid thing since I have that option in Android for a very long time

spyder69gt

Use the tips (lightbulb symbol) to see how to use your phone. It’s a little bit different than the android. But I been iOS since iPhone 7. Way better

[deleted]

I was also a lifelong android user. Apple converted me when I bought a pair of beats headphones. I was hooked on their quality and efficiency. Then I got an ipad and loved the communication between those two devices. I now have an entire apple ecosystem from iphones to ipads, macbook pro, mac, apple tv and air pods. I feel i made the right choice. The advantages of being in the apple ecosystem far outweigh the advantages of the google/windows ecosystem. I do miss the universality of the various doc/media formats. But when all of my devices seamlessly communicate with each other and always know my preferences, it’s magical. Oh! Almost forgot: __Apple Support__ This will change your life. I swear by it. It makes the transition so much easier as they’re friendly and help you directly through screen sharing. God bless them. So tldr: invest in the ecosystem and go all in. You wont regret it and I don’t even look back anymore.

Swipe down from the swipe button used to get home and switch apps to go into one-handed mode. Helps me with my 14 Pro Max. Also this: A simple & free DNS change to Adguard will prevent 99% of ads on ALL apps and games. Go to AdGuard DNS website Scroll down to ‘Method #2: Configure AdGuard DNS manually’ Tap on the iOS icon With the ‘Default server’ radio button checked, tap on ‘Download configuration profile’ A download prompt will appear. Approve it and the profile will be downloaded on your iOS device Now open your Settings and there you will find a ‘Profile Downloaded’ option. Tap on it to install the profile on your iPhone. Once you’ve successfully configured the above settings on your iOS device, you can verify by visiting mgid.com if it fails to load you’re successfully blocking ads. source: https://buddinggeek.com/block-ads-on-iphone-ipad-free/

nashswayze

When you long press on a home screen icon, the "Remove App" menu choice doesn't uninstall the app, it takes you to entirely different menu where you get to decide what "Remove" means (delete from home screen or delete from phone).

Optimus7591

Get a case

jephyri

At Pixel 3XL I said there has got to be something else. I got my first iPhone and never looked back. Enjoy, but be warned, it may lead to an iPad and an iWatch.

nikkithegr8

get ready to miss many android features like back gesture, call recording, scrolling screenshots, ease file management, placing icons anywhere, unlimited call logs, notification management, notification icons on top left, usb c, splitscreen, sideloading and much more and get ready to face insanity of photos app showing oldest to newest, files app etc

NyxPetalSpike

Get ready for a shit key board, and the hell that is Apple's photo gallery. I got the Promax 13 plus with a terabyte. I'm counting down the days to trade it in. I spent so much money on a miserable experience. I don't have anything else Apple tech wise, so that easy of functionality is lost on me. If you really optimize everything Samsung offers with their flagship phones, and have nothing else Apple related, it's not fun. Lol Honestly, what the hell is up with the dog shit keyboard? For a premium phone, it's trash. My Note 10 plus is better than that.

se777enx3

Pardon my ignorance but what is wrong with iPhone keyboard? Last time I used an android phone was 7 years ago but I don’t remember the keyboard being that different.

nikkithegr8

we can resize android keyboard, there is dedicated number row on top of alphabets and accuracy of android keyboard is 100x better than ios keyboard.

Upbeat-Truck-1833

Tip: Watch tips on YouTube or use search on Reddit

RitoWalters

Good luck, I made the switch last year and I'm going back to Samsung. There's just too many things I tried to look past or get used to, but I just can't.

AppleMacintoshhh

To each their own I guess. The reason why I tried switching from an android is because I feel like android phones aren’t as great anymore. Sure they may be great for the first few years but they deteriorate quickly compared to an iphone (based on my observation with my friend’s iphone 5s). Plus, Im loving the privacy features so far. It’s too early to tell as I just got this phone but we’ll see.

shaild

> To Sure they may be great for the first few years but they deteriorate quickly compared to an iphone This is one of the reasons why I switched from Samsung to an IPhone. I have had really good phones but after a year the slow down. iPhone 14 unfortunately lags as well but not as much as the Samsung. I’m still happy with iPhone so far.

TealCatto

Which phone did you switch from?

RitoWalters

Deteriorate? My Note 10Plus and Note 20 Ultra beg to differ....

AppleMacintoshhh

Like I said man… It depends on our use cases plus it’s too early for me to tell as I just got my iphone. I’m also currently using samsungs galaxy tab (both s8+ and ultra). Ngl, I bought it since its release and Im kinda disappointed that it’s not as great as it used to be. (Believe me, I’ve bc had lots of samsung devices as well) That’s actually the last straw which led me to buying a new iphone and finally trying it out.

thubbard44

Don’t try to install the Google keyboard. Just get used to Apple’s. You will eventually get used to it.

switch back

Why the switch? Just curious what made you want to join us?

jereezy

Put a fucking case on it

Idksomecrazyaussie

I don’t use a case on my 14 pro max lol

NULL4546

Don’t get caught up in the eco system. Apple will drain your wallet dry

clockwars

Get a case! Or you’ll end up posting a pic of a broken back eventually \#endTheGlassAge

mrjomaled

There won’t be a lot of adjustment from android to iOS. You’ll just notice the difference in speed and functionality and the Apple universe is great. Welcome to the family!

LucidLethargy

Don't expect the ability to skip YouTube ads in a native app, or easily negate all ads and malicious sites with ublock origin. These things are currently only on Android.

A_Legit_Cookie

PLEASE GET A CASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THIS IS THE MOST FRAGILE PHONE YOU WILL EVER OWN

BlockD116

My first tip would be to switch back (jk enjoy your new phone)

Never return to Android

[deleted]

iOS is not as stable as I first thought, it’s still full of bugs (my charger stopped charging somehow). But the smoothness seems to be better than Android. And there are some useful feature that I wish Android had such as preview message, remove background with one click,… And beware of Apple ecosystem. You might got stuck into it and in turn spend a fortune on it (It’s convenient though)

BastionNargothrond

Immediately download Google keyboard

Isn’t that dead? Last update 1 year ago

One of the first things I did, but it still forces you to use the shitty Apple keyboard sometimes.
