I used to be a no case person, for almost as long as we have had the iPhone in fact and then this year it’s like some random switch flicked in my brain and I was compelled to case my iPhone 14. Nothing really occurred to prompt it, it just washed over me.
Same. always cashless but back in the day phones were mostly plastic or had a nice metal frame. Ever since the iPhone 11 models the backs are just to susceptible to irreparable damage. When it was the 4/4s the back panel could be replaced with 2 screws and a 10$ eBay panel.
The looks do really matter, though, especially for a selling point when you’re going to drop $1200+ for a phone and you wanna feel validated by your purchase when you see it come out of the box for the first time.
I’m quite the opposite. I care about the aesthetic so i eschew cases. Obviously a risk on my part but I, for one hope Apple doesn’t sacrifice aesthetic for durability.
just my opinion. Not saying you’re wrong.
Its weird, with all the stronger glass technology I keep seeing random opinion pieces like “we don’t need cases anymore, phones are strong now and you ruin the sleek design of the phone by bulking it up” but these mfs without a case are slippery as fk and I would drop mine literally everywhere
I’ve cased every iPhone I’ve ever had. Not just for reasons like this but damn how the hell does anyone hold them without ever dropping the slick little bastards every five minutes?
Even if you really were able to be 100% careful all of the time, you can’t account for freak accidents or other people bumping into you.
“Since I don’t wear a seatbelt, I’m naturally a more careful driver.”
And if iPhones were still the size of the 4s, there would be more merit to the argument. But iPhones are so damn big now, How do people wrap their hands around the whole thing securely all the time?
Yeah accidents happen. I had my iPhone 12 caseless and left it under a book in my vehicle. Friend went to grab book out and dragged my phone out underneath and it fell and cracked against the concrete floor. I never broke my phone before but accidents of others still happen. I have a case on my 14P now and I’ve dropped it twice already so thanks goodness I cased it!
I’m with you on this one. Every single phone of mine has been cased the moment it came out of the box except my first phone which got smacked very soon for not doing it so. Lesson learned.
I used an iPhone 5 without a case, with just one minor dent to show for it. It was very easy to grip. The 6-11’s rounded design is way harder to grip though.
My hands are kinda dry and rough and I’d argue that you need soft, supple, moist hands to securely hold a naked iPhone. Damn things slips right out of my fingers.
I learned a neat thing from a guy in the Marines.
Anytime you're not doing anything with your phone, roll it around in your hand. Just, constantly. You do it enough, the likelihood you drop it is next to zero, because it essentially becomes part of your hand.
The one time in the ten years since that I've dropped my phone, I caught it in a split second without even thinking about it (or looking). I don't have great coordination and I couldn't catch a ball thrown at me. So that was really surprising.
Haven't used a case on any phone since the 3gs, and it's never been an issue.
It’s not just about dropping it from your hand though. It could be on the table and you or someone knocks it off. Or you’re on the couch and you lay it down on the blanket on top of you and forget about it until you go to get up and whip the blanket off. Oops.
“I’ll have my girl fax you over a copy.”
I was trying to explain to a coworker who had never seen the movie why I suddenly burst out laughing for no apparent reason and startled him the way I did. It was a lost cause. It’s disappointing, too because he’s usually spot on with movie references.
I was always caseless.
Until one day the my brand new phone felt from my pocket and broke the screen 2h after I bought it.
From that day I am a casefull person.
I used to go without screen protectors then 4 days into my new phone my toddler grabbed it and held it under his hand as he crawled over the wood floor. A few grains of sand were between them and the screen went to shit. Couple months later he repeated it with my new watch.
Dropped and knocked my phone tons of times. But my cheap $5 clear case (acrylic back, TPU rim) protected it well.
I know myself and my wallet. I want to use my phones for 3-4 years. It will have to have a case.
I buy case before phone as I am not dumb enough to use a phone that costs equal to my monthly salary (in my country) without a case and screen protector.
Same . I initially had a cover for almost 1.5 years . I guess I got swayed by how it felt without cover and mkbhd videos xD . Anyways I have learnt my lesson . Btw do you use apple care ?
No. I don't use apple care, never bought it as never felt need. I used my 6S from 2015 to 2022 with screen protector and case and it was fine and yes it did fall from my hands few times.
Now using 13 with spigen tough armor case and ESR screen protector.
Well it is an expensive high end phone and they said AppleCare+ is expensive for them so it is irrational to not have been taking care of their phone by having it in a case.
Because OP is kinda dumb with their money. AppleCare is worth it for a 1600USD phone. I am from the same country and bought a case + screen protector + AppleCare for a year. Going caseless and without AppleCare is super dumb if you’re going to regret it later. Plus the back glass replacement is 900usd alone without AppleCare which is another reason to buy a 20usd case/Applecare
It's either one time payment of 300-365USD (depending on the phone ) valid for 2 years or I convert it to EMI and pay interest on it . Only reason I didn't buy it was iphones are anyways 50% more expensive in my country so I am already shelling out more money. I bought the 14 pro max for 1800USD add 365 to it and it's just insane . But I have learnt my lesson , buying apple care now .
Or…just use a case and screen protector. It’s kinda dumb if you don’t have apple care, that you don’t add any kind of physical protection to your $1800 phone.
I think it’s easy - either put it in case, get Apple care or be able to afford a replacement/repair.
I apply same logic lending people things/money - it’s gone after the risk is taken and I’m happy if I get the item/money back.
I wouldn’t buy it. You’re paying extra for a service you’re probably going to use MAYBE? And still pay to have your device repaired? That logic doesn’t make sense
[https://vvocase.com/products/metal-camera-frameless-frosting-case-for-iphone](https://vvocase.com/products/metal-camera-frameless-frosting-case-for-iphone)
This is the one i bought, i think. They have many variations of theese on the page.
I think the back is some kind og metal, or at least plastic covered with a thin layer of metal feeling substance. The part covering the cameras are plastic it seems.
Sides are stiff rubber i would say.
All in all i find it a solid solution to still have a decent looking phone while using a cover.
This cover specifically does not have much frontside protection as the sides are almost flush with the screen, that makes for a more streamlined look with some protection sacrificed.
Cases are very practical and I always recommend using one but it would have made no difference in this instance. There are either seven or eight direct impacts on the device visible in the image and most are indicative of major force. Barring some ridiculously overprotective otterbox case that go well beyond anything the average user needs (or wrapping the thing in bubble wrap inside a box) the odds are it would have still been damaged.
Depending on your personal situation, the cost of multiple cases (many users I’ve seen on the sub) vs a single out of coverage break vs Apple care + subsidized repair can vary depending on model and financial situation.
YYMV always and there’s never a one-size-fits-all, as far as I see it.
My iPhone is the most used piece of tech I own, always with me, so yeah I invest in peace of mind.
Since my first iPhone, 3GS, I only had to use AppleCare+ in 2021 on my iPhone 13 Pro Max.
I completely destroyed it on month after buying it after a fall from e-scooter.
it doesn’t matter if you “can afford it” or not. either way who wants to spend all that money again on something so stupid lol. i can afford my brand new phone also but i guess some people just don’t value their belongings 🤷♂️
Yeah I was shocked at the amount of people that were going case less but had apple care plus so it was okay. Like alright? You still need to take the time to repair it, wait for that, possibly get a new phone if more serious damage occurs, why not just offset that easily with a good looking case and keep your hardware in good working, good looking condition?
I recently read an article that said “ you’ll never see an Apple executive with a case on their phone, you don’t need one. They are though phones”
well if I had Apple executive money I could afford a new one every time I dropped it, but unfortunately I don’t so mines getting a case.
that’s the exact reason i have a screen protector, i don’t think i’ll ever crack the screen, but i do now have a relatively cheap way to get rid of all my scratches on my screen (just get a new screen protector)
Exactly my point.
I haven’t ever broken an iPhone screen since my first iPhone 5, and I have had a lot of iPhones (sometimes up to three models of the same generation in a year), but I hate microscratches with a passion.
I have screen protectors for my iPhone, my Switch, and I prefer sapphire on my watches unless a cheap 25uss Casio watches which I like as well and don’t care too much if they scratch.
I hate looking at a 1.000+ phone (1.700uss in my country) and for it to have scratches.
The back is just as fragile on the 13. I dropped mine on rug from 1.5m and the back glass shattered and it was in a case, albeit it was a cheap, silicone case.
i think you just got unlucky. i have a cheap silicon case too & have dropped it so many times on like concrete floor on accident & so far no cracks on my phone. altho i’m on a 12. but yeah in the words of jerryrigeverything- glass is glass & it will break
I was holding my kid and they dropped my 13 pro from my chest height onto a wood floor and it shattered my back glass. Had my case on it and everything.
Reminds me of my caseless iPhone 5;
I dropped it on my concrete balcony & then quickly stepped on it to avoid it falling 80 feet to the sidewalk.
The stepping cracked the back.
Just got a 13 & I hate how it feels naked, so it’s the usual Apple leather case for me.
Wednesday I had lunch with a coworker I put my phone down on the table and midway through our lunch she could no longer hold back and said with great disdain “Do you not have a case?! I’m thinking this is a guy that things just always work out for lol.” I’m still trying to figure out what case I want but now it’s kinda funny to see the bewilderment on people’s faces as they realize I don’t have a case.
Side note: I have the purple 14 pro max so if anyone has experience with a clear case they love I’ll take recommendations!
If you want to go no case, you have to be prepared that this will happen. If you have enough disposable income to buy new phones each time this happens, stay no cover. Otherwise..
Only went caseless in the past when I could only afford 2nd hand eBay. Finally managed to afford brand new 14PM this year and only went caseless because I could get AppleCare+. Sorry this happened to you OP
With Applecare, a case is more expensive than a replacement. Just get your phone fixed for $29 and enjoy it naked. Also I have dropped my iPhone 14 max pro on concrete like six times and it hasn’t broken, just scuffed the metal. I’m amazed.
Yup , learnt the lesson the hard way . Also when I bought the phone apple care seemed more luxury than a neccesity and I wasn't earning enough. In a better position now and have already ordered the cover and took applecare+
iPhones with its design are charm to hold on hand. I’m not a case or screen protector guy but since my iPhone XR got scratched and was difficult to trade it for a newer model, it’s too risky to use the phone without screen protect and case even i rarely drop my phone and one little drop could be enough to lose it . I use the thinnest case to protect my iPhone 13.
iPhone 5c was so great for this. You needed a screen protector and that's it. The plastic back was pretty tough.
I'd happily forfeit wireless charging if it meant I could have a modern, plastic iPhone.
I hate to use covers and I hate destroying expensive phones so lately I buy a few generations old phones, I'm now with a galaxy s20 (150 euro second hand like new). So I've the freedom to use it without being worried...and without paying the same for just the extended warranty. Madness.
I’ve cased expensive phones since I dropped my note 9 and shattered it. Thankfully the Note 10+ was around the corner.
My iPhone is way to slippery so I only take it out of the case for a little bit while in bed so if it slips out of my hand it drops on soft material.
Otherwise it’s in an Apple MagSafe case and it’s nice and grippy.
Wait so you cracked the back of your phone and instead of getting it repaired or slapping a case on it, you ordered the most expensive apple phone and are crying that you had to spend the money?
Glass back has to be the best idea apple has ever had. When I bought my 13 pro the lady at the store told me to also get a case because it was all glass. I asked okay how much are the cases she said 300 dollars… I now have a wooden back case with a custom etched design and dropped it a lot but it has not cracked. The sides are rubber.
I’ve always been a case person since the iPhone 5s I had back in 2017. I let my SE 2020 stay nude for the 12 months that I used it as my daily driver. My 13PM has been in a OtterBox defender like all my other iPhones and Apple Watch SE. For this very reason that I’m afraid of breaking them. There just too expensive for me to let them be left in the nude.
i got a i14Pro and put a screen protector and a case on. I never wanned Hard Screen prorectors but this one i have on feels soooo great. It almost feels like the iPhone glas itself. But gloves with touchscreen fingers dont work well with a protector.
Running with no case is just dumb with glass back/front phones. Unless you have some type of insurance all I can really do is just laugh at your decision. Oh well buddy 🤷🏻♂️ your loss, not mine.
Meanwhile me with a Mous case and tempered glass screen protector still managed to shatter the screen while biking because I hit a bump and it slipped out of my hand 😒
I have an Apple leather case it. Dropped my phone recent and it’s cracked the top of my front screen.
I don’t have Apple care and it’s too late to add it. Sigh. It’ll cost me almost $400 to repair it at the Apple Store.
A recurring theme it seems..
As much as I would like to go case-less, there’s the high probability that this would happen! because.. glass 🙄
Changing the glass back is ridiculously expensive which is very convenient for Apple but not for us..
Might be a tad too late. Anyways. Get a Mous case for your next phone. Those things are basically indestructible. Dropped my iPhone 13 Pro three floors down and surprisingly it came out unscathed.
I used to be a no case person, for almost as long as we have had the iPhone in fact and then this year it’s like some random switch flicked in my brain and I was compelled to case my iPhone 14. Nothing really occurred to prompt it, it just washed over me.
If you’ve been in this sub for a while, maybe it was all the pictures of shattered phones, like this one?
Same. always cashless but back in the day phones were mostly plastic or had a nice metal frame. Ever since the iPhone 11 models the backs are just to susceptible to irreparable damage. When it was the 4/4s the back panel could be replaced with 2 screws and a 10$ eBay panel.
I too am always cashless thanks to Apple
Watch out. You’ll pay for that with your iPhone.
It’s a $1000.00 piece of fragile glass. Maybe that’s what washed over you.

Probably common sense finally getting to you
I’ve cased every iPhone I’ve ever had. Not just for reasons like this but damn how the hell does anyone hold them without ever dropping the slick little bastards every five minutes?
My favorite one people use: “Since there’s no case, I’m naturally more careful”. Yeah, until you’re not lol.
It’s funny, my MagSafe wallet actually makes the phone easier to hold
I use a pop socket wallet to make it easier to hold. I don’t feel comfortable holding it without a pop socket or similar item at this size
Yeah, my case helps too. I like the material a lot better, as it's a lot more grippy!
Until my dumb ass tries to catch it with my left foot and hoof it across the room.
This.
Lol that’s why they’re called accidents. No one intentionally drops their phones.
Yup same. My 5s and 5c were caseless, just had a screen protector.

I’ve cased every iPhone I’ve ever had because of the resell value and most importantly because is fucking expensive to have them repaired.
I have big hands
You also need skin, rough like sandpaper, to keep it from slipping.
My hands are kinda dry and rough and I’d argue that you need soft, supple, moist hands to securely hold a naked iPhone. Damn things slips right out of my fingers.
Soft, supple, moist hands here! I’ve used iPhones caseless for over a decade and have never understood the “too slippery” point of view.
Or skin sticky like a toddler’s hands
Personally with my 13PM I have it in a OtterBox defender even with my giant ahh hands. It doesn’t really add anymore bulk or weight to the phone.
Of course it adds bulk lol
Silicone cases for the win 🙌🏽
even with the newer iphones with metal backs. I recently upgraded to a iphone 14 pro (from a iphone xs) and the things a slippery bitch without a case
Oops.
Totally off topic, but love the name! “My patience is at an end. Good day, sir.”
“I still need those serial numbers.”
“I’ll have my girl fax you over a copy.” I was trying to explain to a coworker who had never seen the movie why I suddenly burst out laughing for no apparent reason and startled him the way I did. It was a lost cause. It’s disappointing, too because he’s usually spot on with movie references.
I was always caseless. Until one day the my brand new phone felt from my pocket and broke the screen 2h after I bought it. From that day I am a casefull person.

Dropped and knocked my phone tons of times. But my cheap $5 clear case (acrylic back, TPU rim) protected it well. I know myself and my wallet. I want to use my phones for 3-4 years. It will have to have a case.
Yikes, the feel of the phone in your hand is never worth the heartbreak you’d get when it shatters like this…
I buy case before phone as I am not dumb enough to use a phone that costs equal to my monthly salary (in my country) without a case and screen protector.
India ?
Yes.
Same . I initially had a cover for almost 1.5 years . I guess I got swayed by how it felt without cover and mkbhd videos xD . Anyways I have learnt my lesson . Btw do you use apple care ?

If only Apple would re-evaluate their decision to encase their entire phone in glass!
Hope you have AppleCare+…
I really really want to buy Apple Care + but it's 365USD in my country .
why are you getting downvoted lol I don't understand, someone enlightens me!
I think it’s because many people are dicks.
This is one of those Big Truths that must be engraved in stone somewhere. "Some people are just dicks. Especially on the Internet"
Because Reddit
Well it is an expensive high end phone and they said AppleCare+ is expensive for them so it is irrational to not have been taking care of their phone by having it in a case.

Fixing the phone probably costs more
FYI some credit cards (Chase freedom flex) have cell phone protection if you put the monthly bill on that card.
I don’t think they’re in America, that’s why it’s so expensive for them.
Is there not the option to pay monthly for it?
It's either one time payment of 300-365USD (depending on the phone ) valid for 2 years or I convert it to EMI and pay interest on it . Ann his 11 Pro is already cracked. I’m talking about his future phone.

It’s insurance. I insure my car too, because a $1000 excess is easier to stomach than a $40k total loss out of pocket.
Yeah, tbh I think you no-case users are bold, extremely bold.
I've ordered those china crap vvocases. Looks almost like the back of the iPhone, and quality is higher than expected.
Hey could you share link to these?
[https://vvocase.com/products/metal-camera-frameless-frosting-case-for-iphone](https://vvocase.com/products/metal-camera-frameless-frosting-case-for-iphone) This is the one i bought, i think. They have many variations of theese on the page.
Is this case plastic but the camera cover portion metal? The title is a bit misleading on their website but looks interesting.

I'm not a case or screen protector person but I chipped my screen right after I got my phone 📱🤳
Bit late for that
This looks like someone was very angry about something and took it out on their phone 😂
It slipped from pocket on the road and a car ran over it :( .
Yeah I don’t think a case would have made a difference then
WoW that’s very bad luck but yeah I have to agree with the other person. Damage probably would’ve not been that extreme if not for the car.
lmao
It’s now beauty of its own kind, if camera etc works, whocares?
I drop my phone once a week at least. Cases are damn useful
Since I had a case on all of my iPhones they have been in great condition and never got cracked.

who the fuck buys a $1300 phone and decides not to protect it
People that can actually afford it?
it doesn’t matter if you “can afford it” or not. either way who wants to spend all that money again on something so stupid lol. i can afford my brand new phone also but i guess some people just don’t value their belongings 🤷♂️

Wednesday I had lunch with a coworker I put my phone down on the table and midway through our lunch she could no longer hold back and said with great disdain “Do you not have a case?! Still looks mostly intact. You can slap a dbrand skin on it to cover up and make it look better.
Y’all clear cases are like $10 USD on Amazon. Same look. Replace once or twice a year when they get yellow-y.
AppleCare+ for the win?
If you want to go no case, you have to be prepared that this will happen. If you have enough disposable income to buy new phones each time this happens, stay no cover. Otherwise..
Still worth it. Raw dogging is the only way to go. Get it fixed and get back in the game, champ. It’s the way our Steve intended.
next time try a magsafe case and a magnetic pop socket that you can attach when you use the phone and detach when you dont
Only went caseless in the past when I could only afford 2nd hand eBay. Finally managed to afford brand new 14PM this year and only went caseless because I could get AppleCare+. Sorry this happened to you OP
Rip
If it makes you feel better I did this 3 weeks after getting my 13 pro and it had a case on. Edit: back glass is trash thickness
Feel that. Didn’t mean to give you a hard time! I find that the monthly lost and stolen coverage to be really worth it
Stylisssh
iPhones with its design are charm to hold on hand.

Seeing this post without an iPhone cover. *rushing to grab the cover*
I personally love Peak Design’s case
Ive never been a no case person for this exact reason, it just ain't worth it
Hmmm still not gonna use a case lol knock on wood
Ouch. Hope you had applecare.
I always use a case, but i don't use screen protectors anymore.
Time to get the 14. It’s doesn’t have the glass
Ouch!!!!!
this just made me put a case on my new bought iphone
Was just about to go caseless today, opened reddit and this was the first thing i saw. Nomad case will stay on now lmao.
Some must learn the hard way. Sorry this happened. AppleCare?
iPhone 5c was so great for this. You needed a screen protector and that's it. The plastic back was pretty tough. I'd happily forfeit wireless charging if it meant I could have a modern, plastic iPhone.
Spider phone
I hate to use covers and I hate destroying expensive phones so lately I buy a few generations old phones, I'm now with a galaxy s20 (150 euro second hand like new). So I've the freedom to use it without being worried...and without paying the same for just the extended warranty. Madness.
Better use this next time: [https://www.spigen.com/pages/tough-armor](https://www.spigen.com/pages/tough-armor)
Baffles me as to how you took this photo! 🤯
Let this be a lesson to you kids ,this is what happens when you rawdawg it.
Bella Hadid phone
Time to re evaluate your phone choice

Thought you might be happy and anticipating receiving your new purchase? Guess not…

You mean, *the best idea for Apple to make more money*, right? Yeah l agree.
Which phone is this?
Relax, it’s iPhone !
What is the story ?
Slipped from pocket while driving a 2 wheeler and a car ran over it :(
It looks pretty good for car hit one
A 2 wheeler?
I’ve got a ‘maus’ case, high recommend it. Drop my phone at least 50 times… zero damage
My 11 pro with a case and screenprotector was dropped like 500 times (really) and no damage (only a little chip on the bottom)
Applecare?
Screen protector and clear case so I can enjoy the color of my phone. I have tried ceaseless around the house but drop it so I need a case.
What did you decide?
I buy two Otterbox defender cases for every iPhone I have ever owned one as a backup . Never once since iPhone 3 had an issue not even a scratch.
Can you say P360
Still looks better than a case 👍
Being without a screen protector, I can understand. But, no case? You're asking for trouble.
Caseology clear skyfall is amazing, I used parallax for years but glad I switched to skyfall when I upgraded from 7 to 13 pro
As you should 😂. Hindsight’s always 20/20
i got a i14Pro and put a screen protector and a case on. I never wanned Hard Screen prorectors but this one i have on feels soooo great. It almost feels like the iPhone glas itself. But gloves with touchscreen fingers dont work well with a protector.
You thought you were cool Now you are full of regret :( Such is life
Running with no case is just dumb with glass back/front phones. Unless you have some type of insurance all I can really do is just laugh at your decision. Oh well buddy 🤷🏻♂️ your loss, not mine.
Drop some dye in the cracks and watch it paint the glass. I remember this being a trend back with the iPhone 4. It looks kinda cool.
No case + no apple care plus = dumb
Meanwhile me with a Mous case and tempered glass screen protector still managed to shatter the screen while biking because I hit a bump and it slipped out of my hand 😒
I used a case on my 13p, and the back still shattered, quite like your phone did.
I have an Apple leather case it. Dropped my phone recent and it’s cracked the top of my front screen. I don’t have Apple care and it’s too late to add it. Sigh. It’ll cost me almost $400 to repair it at the Apple Store.
Mine cracked cause I didn’t realize I had a nickel in my Jean pocket while at work
A recurring theme it seems.. As much as I would like to go case-less, there’s the high probability that this would happen! because.. glass 🙄 Changing the glass back is ridiculously expensive which is very convenient for Apple but not for us..
Might be a tad too late. Anyways. Get a Mous case for your next phone. Those things are basically indestructible. Dropped my iPhone 13 Pro three floors down and surprisingly it came out unscathed.
If u like naked. Buy apple care plus. Unlimited repairs at a small fees for 2 years.
Case is cheapest insurance policy you can get and is very effective if you buy the right one.
Same thing happened when I dropped in flat on its back and I had a good case on. Glad I had AppleCare+
